i just checked landco's website. mga resorts og leisure parks man diay ni ilang mga projects. among their famous projects are playa calatagan and hacienda escudero.

ganahan kog ingon ani ang ilang ibutang instead of mall but if they can put up both, why not? they're very welcome to do so, hehehe.

regarding vista land, i hope they would push through with their starmall.

so confirmed na gyud ni ang A. Brown? di ba sapatos man ang W. Brown?

LANDCO is the one that manages the Mall unit of Filinvest - its Festival Mall in Filinvest Corporate City in Alabang....

Butuan City gov’t steps up security measures this Holy Week
by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Apr. 19 (PIA) -- Local authorities here intensified its campaign for the safe and security of the public during the observance of the Holy Week.

In an interview over a local radio station here this morning, Butuan City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima said city Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. has directed city police office PSSupt. Jose Carillo to step up measures to ensure the security of the public during the weeklong activity.

Culima said police officers must be visible in public places as the observance of Lent draws thousands of parishioners particularly to churches.

The Butuan City Police Office in a press statement said it will intensify its foot and mobile security patrols, traffic control and direction along national highways, thoroughfares leading to and from, churches and other establishments connected to the different Holy Week activities.

This also includes the fielding of uniformed policemen for visibility purposes to deter/preempt the hostile plans/activities of terrorists and other criminal elements.

BCPO will also establish Motorist Assistance Center by undertaking public information drive thru print and broadcast media on safety tips based on the current situation that is prevailing in their area of responsibility. (PIA-Caraga)

14,000 jobs open in May 1 Labor Day mega fairs
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
April 19, 2011, 6:11pm

BUTUAN CITY – Close to 14,000 jobs, both foreign and domestic, await job applicants as mega job fairs will open in various localities during the Labor Day celebration on May 1, the government’s labor agencies announced yesterday.

The mega job fairs will be opened in various regional offices of the Department of Labor and Employment, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Butuan City and Cagayan de Oro City.

All accredited recruitment agencies of the government will participate. In Butuan City alone, government agencies are opening 8,000 jobs while Cagayan de Oro will also open more than 5,000 jobs for employment abroad and locally, officials said.

Along with the local government units, the DoLE, the POEA and the OWWA are joining hand-in-hand to address the unemployment problem in the two regions in Mindanao, in line with the job generation program of the Aquino Administration, said Region XIII DoLE Regional Director Ofelia B. Domingo.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is also joining the job fairs.

Currently, the POEA is searching for a skills registry to match the job skills to be brought here during the job fairs.

OWWA Caraga has also opened a training hall that will serve as a venue for OFWs to be trained with different livelihood opportunities, especially those who were displaced due to calamities and political crises abroad.

Region XIII OWWA Regional Director Dr. Marietta A. Lumawag said dependents of OFWs may also participate in the trainings.

“Through this, we will be training the displaced OFWs as well as their dependents to venture in livelihood opportunities. By joining the trainings they may find a way to engage in business in the future,” Lumawag said.

The region’s OWWA chief said this week, business opportunity seminars will be conducted “so that as soon as the OFWs will have their business plans, they will immediately be given livelihood funds.”

Lumawag said funding of livelihood opportunities will be sourced from the National Reintegration Center for OFWs. “The fund of this center comes from the General Appropriations Act,” she said.

"Butuan is booming these days as seen from new property projects. New structures are rising at the city proper and upscale residential subdivisions have mushroomed along the highway outside the city limits." ---BusinessWorld Online (Posted on April 19, 2011 11:26:06 PM)

Caraga rising from return of logging

Caraga is among the poorest regions in the country despite its rich natural resources. The region was known as the logging capital for decades until the Cory administration dropped the timber license agreement (TLA) system in early ’90s.

Nowadays, the region’s leaders call Caraga the mining capital given several low-key projects of local and foreign groups. These range from small- to large-scale ventures mostly in the eastern part of the region.

The region appears to have recovered from the doldrums brought about by the government’s selective logging ban policy. Non-renewal and cancellation of TLAs, by the way, did not stop legal commercial-scale tree-cutting nationwide. The policy simply shifted the activity to plantation-type timber business. The prescribed planting materials back then were fast-growing tree species that could mature in about a decade.

Thus, the 10-year lag time to harvest trees from when the policy was imposed. There were only a few logging trucks that passed through Caraga’s highways during the interval.

Travelling to the Northern Mindanao city of Butuan from this city early morning last week, once can’t help but notice that the big, slow moving trucks hauling timber have returned. These come from tree plantations that supply licensed sawmills in Mindanao. It is unlikely that all of the timber were cut legally, however, since some were small in diameter. The timber was definitely not harvested as props for Davao’s banana plantations, which, by the way, also require permits.

It also appears that authorities have loosened up on regulating the transport of logs since there was only one or two inspection teams and checkpoints that are supervised by the Environment department along the 300-kilometer highway.

Timber and other wood products, old and newly cut, have been strewn on the side of the highway in some towns. Floating logs have returned to the river approaching Butuan unlike in the past when old rotting wood were seen near the shore.

It looks like brisk wood trading has returned the country’s timber corridor. Butuan is booming these days as seen from new property projects. New structures are rising at the city proper and upscale residential subdivisions have mushroomed along the highway outside the city limits.

hesitant gyud na sila at first. naa siguro fear nga dili mo-click. ingon ana pod ang starbucks sa una sa cebu. madak-an daw gasto sa freight then basin dili mokagat ang mga cebuanos and they were shocked at what happened kay ang ilang 1st branch outside luzon was the highest in sales way back 2003-2004. tan-awa karon, 9 branches na yata sila in metro cebu.

caraga was never a kingdom ....not even considered ancient...

caraga was coined duirng the spanish times when the 2 Agusans and Surigaos were merge into one district .....known as the District of Caraga.....

when you say ancient kingdom...it should be referred to Butuan.....being heavily documented and mentioned in the annals of history even in the Soong Shi chinese historical records

I will give DepEd a lousy 60 grade for this

DTI to Award Outstanding Entrepreneurs
Tuesday, April 5,2011

http://www.freedom4ipc.org/main8/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=36&Itemid=83

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said outstanding small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be given citations as part of the 2011 SME Star program, which aims to strengthen and support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME).The program is an important component in the MSME development and promotion as it recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who have shown remarkable achievements in growing their businesses to become globally competitive enterprises.Three award levels are included in the program corresponding to stages in enterprise growth, the DTI said. For enterprises in the start-up and capability-building stage, the SME Rising Star award willl be conferred to outstanding MSMEs at the provincial level, with one winner each for the micro, small and medium enterprise categories.Local MSME were encouraged to vie for this award by submitting the required nomination forms and other documents to the Provincial MSME Development Council via the DTI provincial offices. The council determines the winners based on judging criteria with around 264 SME Rising Star award winners expected to receive the DTI citation.Enterprise at the domestic market penetration and export awareness stage are eligible for nomination to the SME Star Elite award, which is conferred at the regional level. Provincial MSMED Councils may endorse one nominee for each of the micro, small and medium enterprise categories. The regional MSMED Council or an equivalent body screens and will award a total of 51 outstanding enterprises from 17 regions. For highly successful enterprises that have reached the export and expansion stage, the highest recognition is given through the SME Star Presidential award. Chosen from the pool of current SME Star Elite awardees, the national MSMED Council executive committee determines the qualifying finalists who are then submitted to a board of judges. There will be one winner for the 2011 SME Star Presidential award who will receive a presidential trophy during the awarding ceremonies to be held as part of the SME Week celebrations in July 2011.DTI said MSMEs represent 99.6 percent of all registered businesses in the country and can thus be considered as the backbone of the Philippine economy.

shame on DEPED erecting this welcome banner!

they better review history books.....what a lousy DepED heads we have

caraga was never a kingdom ....not even considered ancient...

caraga was coined duirng the spanish times when the 2 Agusans and Surigaos were merge into one district .....known as the District of Caraga.....

when you say ancient kingdom...it should be referred to Butuan.....being heavily documented and mentioned in the annals of history even in the Soong Shi chinese historical records

I will give DepEd a lousy 60 grade for this

Indeed you know your HISTORY stuff Bob...
It should be Butuan not the distrito de Caraga... MISNOMER blues..

Caraga health research consortium preps for 3rd anniversary
by Robert E. Roperos

http://piacaraga.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-04-21T04%3A35%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=1

BUTUAN CITY, Apr. 20 (PIA) -- To promote a dynamic health research community for the attainment of proper health in Caraga Region, officials of the Caraga Health Research and Development Consortium (CHRDC) spearheaded by the Regional Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is on its final stage of preparation on its third anniversary celebration in the region.

According to Gladys Cubal of DOST - Caraga, the two-day celebration on May 12 and 13 will feature Essay Writing Contest on the first day to be participated by students in the secondary level in both private and public schools.

Also, a forum on aligning research to local health needs will be conducted as part of the agenda setting for the consortium, as well as a workshop for the validation on health research in Caraga.

Meanwhile, Cubal said the second day which marks the third anniversary celebration will be featuring a forum or seminar on health research application. Highlighting the forum is a telemedicine where participants will be given instructions on how and what medicine to apply for the kinds of diseases or illnesses.

Cubal further said an ovicidal trap for dengue will be featured in the forum. DOST through its research center recently discovered a way in trapping mosquito through the ovicidal/larvicidal (OL) trap, the newly finished research study for application were launched in Tacloban City. It is a system used to control the population of the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito.

The OL trap is made of pellets diluted in tap water inside a black plastic cup with an ice drop lawanit stick for mixing the substance.

The establishment of the CHRDC started last October 16, 2007. Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, Executive Director of the Philippine HRDC presented to the participants from academe, health institutions and line agencies involved in the implementation of health services the situation of the health status of the Filipino people and conducted a briefing on the Philippine National Health Research System and the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA) and the need to establish the Regional Health Research System in the region.

Meanwhile, DOST Asst. Regional Director Dominga Mallonga, in an interview said the consortium for 2010 has conducted fora and strategic planning particularly on seminar on Health Research, Climate Change and its impact on Health, training of HERDIN Ne-ON System, Writeshop on R & D Program and Incidence of Dengue in Caraga Region, as well as the Incidence of Pneumonia in the region.

These projects has created an impact to the community specifically in mitigating climate change, health researches, and solid waste management system.

Dir. Mallonga also said CHRDC selected members were able to attend planning-workshop of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) in time with the 28th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD).

“With this, the members were able to obtain additional inputs as to how a research project will be enhanced and thus, obtaining a reliable output that serves as input for the interventions of concerned agencies especially on mitigating the impact for climate change,” Mallonga said.

Mallonga further said CHRDC was able to send Dr. Fernando Herrrera, project leader of the research project entitled “Level of Information Education Campaign on Solid Waste Management and Household Practices on Solid Waste Disposal in Butuan City” to an orientation and hands-on training on software for Processing Qualitative Data.
Mallonga said, the research is already successful and result of the study will be given to the local government unit of the city of Butuan for proper action.

DOST-Caraga is the lead agency of CHRDC. (PIA-Caraga)

PRO-13 thanked Cong. Aquino for new firearms donation

BUTUAN CITY, Apr. 22 – PCSupt. Reynaldo Rafal, Police Regional Office (PRO) Caraga Regional Director expressed his heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Agusan del Norte 1st District Congressman Jose “Joboy” Aquino II for his donation of new firearms to Butuan City Police Office (BCPO) in a turn-over ceremony held recently at PRO 13 Conference Room, Libertad, this city.

Cong. Aquino visited PRO 13 and was welcomed by a Side Honor with the 13th Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) personnel to formally and personally turned-over some 14 M16 (M4) rifles to the PNP chief of the region.

Dir. Rafal personally received the firearms from Cong. Aquino and handed it over to PSupt. Francisco Dungo, BCPO’s Deputy City Director for Operations after signing the Deed of Donation.

Rafal in his speech said the donated long firearms are of great help in PRO 13’s personnel enhancement in terms of operational and capability in confronting criminality in the city following the creation of the PNP BCPO’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team months ago.

Cong. Aquino on the other hand vowed to continue his assistance to PRO 13 and Butuan City Police Office saying that this is one of his priorities being the forefront in crime busting.

In his speech, Aquino also vowed to donate six multicabs for BCPO’s field cops within the year to help the city in crime deterrence thru police visibility.

It can be recalled that Cong. Aquino has also donated multicabs to all the 86 barangays in Butuan City as well as in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte which is part of the 1st Congressional District of Agusan del Norte.

Witnessing the turn-over ceremony are members of the PRO 13’s Command Group, top PNP officials of the region and personnel, together with BCPO’s PNP SWAT Team. (BCPO/PIA-Caraga)

(PIA-Caraga)

Yellow corn plantations up in Agusan
April 21, 2011, 3:09pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – The agriculture sector in the province of Agusan del Norte is expected to get a big boost after new Korean investors are set to start develop a large yellow corn plantation in the area.

The New Philcorn Corporation led by its chairman Cheong Sun Young and president Frances Ramirez Alcaraz had already signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) as co-management developer with the provincial government of Agusan del Norte under Gov. Erlpe John M. Amante in various agricultural lands in the municipalities of Las Nieves, Buenavista, Nasipit, and Carmen.

Under the MoA, the New Philcorn Corporation has targeted 8,000 hectares of land for yellow corn plantation – the first yellow corn plantation in Northeastern and Northern Mindanao regions.

The Korean company is also set to construct a yellow corn processing plant in the said areas.

In was learned that the effectivity of the MoA will be for a period of 25 years beginning this year, and could be extended for another 25 years upon the mutual agreement of both parties. The provincial board of Agusan del Norte unanimously approved the MoA. (Mike U. Crismundo)

(Mike U. Crismundo)

PIA-Caraga’s SMS strategy works

by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Apr. 24 (PIA) -- “Because the public has the right to know and the right to access information in a timely, accurate, and

relevant manner,” was the answer of Abner Caga, Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Caraga OIC when asked by local mediamen here on the significance of the short messaging system (SMS) better known to the public as texting and its use as the information dissemination strategy of the PIA.

In a roundtable discussion marking the office’s launching of the “share-an-info” campaign held recently at PIA-Caraga, Caga emphasized that texting is a big boost in the updating of situations in real time and its significance in the quick response of concerned government agencies.

Caga pointed out that the SMS is one of the fastest means of transmitting and receiving information. It is also inexpensive. Unbeknownst to many, texting could save lives through the dissemination of critical information. It can pinpoint situations that print could not. It is also fast, reliable, and accurate, for as long as the recipient and receivers are members of a communication group ready to send and receive relevant information anytime, anywhere.

As a matter of fact, said Caga, PIA-Caraga recipients also gave the mobile numbers of their friends and relatives to PIA and requested to include them as recipients of critical information.

Furthermore, information officers of other government agencies and the local government units are among the recipients of PIA information dissemination. They voluntarily share any information from their workplaces that will serve as SMS input to be sent to all the PIA recipients.

During the spate of floodings in Caraga early this year, PIA-Caraga’s SMS recipients also played

important roles in disseminating information on the status of the road networks in the region.

The monitoring of the water level in Agusan River through the LGUs were also texted by local chief executives to PIA for airing in the region. “Information was immediately aired by broadcasters who were on-board during the time they received the SMS,” Caga explained.

Further, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s (RDRRMC) Disaster Update, including the PAGASA update, and even the

status of the flight and ship schedules, through the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Philippine Ports Authority

(PPA) were also texted to PIA for dissemination.

“Through this strategy, we were able to create networks of SMS recipients and through these relevant information, we were able to

help the community especially during a disaster,” Caga explained.

In a separate interview, Fr. John Christian Young, president of Father Saturnino Urios University here said that through PIA’s SMS, it seems that the recipients readily tuned-in their radios, television sets, and were so involved as to read the newspapers every hour, every minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As of March 31, PIA-Caraga was able to have 603 SMS recipients to include religious organizations, non-government organizations,

student leaders, academe, AFP and PNP officials and personnel, regional line agencies, LGUs, local and national media correspondents in Caraga, and government information officers in the region, among others. (RER-PIA 13, Caraga)

Female students shine
April 24, 2011, 3:06pm

Agusan del Norte, Philippines – Female campus sports journalists outclassed their male counterparts in the secondary English and Filipino individual sports writing competition during the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) staged here recently by the Department of Education (DepEd).

This was learned from the DepEd’s Bureau of Secondary Education officials who announced the winning sports scribes during the culminating program of the week-long NSPC that was hosted by the Caraga Region using the Father Urios University (high school) as contest venues.

Education Undersecretary for Programs and Projects Yolanda S.Quijano, closing rites speaker, said the NSPC, which was participated in by leading school penpushers from l17 regions, is the mental counterpart of the Palarong Pambnsa – the country’s premier schools sports competition.

The annual event is a major DepEd program that seeks to upgrade the journalistic skills of basic education students, and to promote a balance between freedom of expression and responsible journalism.

A Central Visayas (CV) sports journalist who belongs to the weaker sex, Sheila Jane Ylagan, topped the high school English writing competition where a Northern Mindanao female sports writer, Rizza Jalit, placed overall third.

Male school sports scribes took the other top ranks with Joy Mark Jabby of Caraga garnering the No. 2 post, John Kevin Amador of Southern Mindanao placed No. 4, Mark Joseph Ebasco also of Northern Mindanao ranked No. 5, and Kristoff Mosalito of Caraga is No. 6.

In the Filipino high school sports writing category, five of seven top winners were followers of Eve.

They were Pamela Gozon who placed overall first, Angeline Muriel Escutron – third, Marilyn R. Torres – fifth, Genevieve Quimal of Ilocos – sixth, and Abegail Manuel who placed seventh. (Tony Pe. Rimando)

Butuan City now considered new investment destination in Mindanao
February 12, 2011, 1:36am

http://www.mb.com.ph/node/303858/butuan-city-now-con

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) -- With an educated workforce, reasonable labor cost and strategic business location, some local and foreign investors are now taking a second look at Butuan City as the new investment destination in Mindanao, Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. said on Friday.

Because of its strategic geographical location, Butuan City is ideal for offices and investments especially in the transport of people, products, and services to different or points in Mindanao.

With the ongoing Butuan City-Bukidnon road up for completion, the movement of agricultural products between Bukidnon, Visayas and Luzon will be easier at a lower cost.

An international seaport in Barangay Masao will soon be established which would complement the busy Nasipit International Wharf here. Atty. Gemma Reserva, Butuan City general services head, added that a P1-billion shipyard facility will also be soon established in the city.

In a recent meeting with his close advisers and staff, Amante said good governance and transparency have attracted many local and foreign investors who have signified interest to invest in Butuan City, the capital of the Caraga Region.

At present, almost all regional offices of different national government agencies, development foundations and institutions, local and international non-government organizations (NGOs) and branch offices of many local and international businesses are located in Butuan City.

Business process outsourcing giants Convergy’s, i-Telecare and other call centers have also expressed and already sent proposals to the mayor to establish their branch offices in the city.

Many local and foreign investors mostly big players in the tourism industry have also expressed intense desire to develop eco-tourism, adventure and historical and culture tourism projects in Butuan City.

Several plantation-type agriculture, livestock and aqua-marine-based investors have also expressed keen interest to invest in Butuan City including planted wood species based businesses are keen to establish wood processing plants here in Butuan.

Amante vowed to further improve other infrastructure needs of the investors, saying Butuan City needs to have better comprehensive land use and master development plan including cheaper electricity and water rates to be competitive with other cities and entice more business investment opportunities whether it be local or international.

Amante also challenged the academe sector to produce a world-class workforce that would cater to local and foreign investments. (PNA)

Wui, Metroworld is not tiange baya ha. In fact, they have BENCH inside their store.

Yup nag close na ang Metroworld not because ka nalugi sila (Metroworld is Manila based) BUT due to some issues, etc..etc.. when the owners (the Ty's) finally decided to sell the building, dili man pud makaya sa Metroworld ang price, so they have to go.

The building is now under new ownership & is being renovated. Let's just hope it will not be a another korean store :ohno:

let me tell you, i was dissapointed to the fil ams who don't believe in the phil, coz i think they think they have made it here in the US, but i needed 2 mill peso or three to start a biz, and it looked like i could not raise it, i show the reasons why its good to invest in the phil, but really reputation precedes itself, they were worried about scams, rebels, corruptions, etc, i had an uphill battle, the only reason they believed me eventually, i mean my good friend is because we are friends for 20 years and i have never screwed him, it was really my character, now he believes also about butuan, and now i can pictures what i will do step by step, once i got our money lined up.

I did some google and I learned something new today:

A midden, also known as a kitchen midden, or a shell heap (when they contain a large number of shellfish remains),[1] is a dump for domestic waste. The word is of Scandinavian via Middle English derivation, but is used by archaeologists worldwide to describe any kind of feature containing waste products relating to day-to-day human life. They may be convenient, single-use pits created by nomadic groups or long-term, designated dumps used by sedentary communities that accumulate over several generations.-Wikipedia

"Butuan: Memories of My Beloved Hometown"
By Roging Rosales (Former Vice Governor of Agusan del Norte)

Butuan then and now is comprised of many barrios that were the breadbasket of the community. Known to me at the time, on the east side, are Ampayon, Taguibo, Tiniwisan, Baan, Mahay and Tagabaca. On the west were Bancasi (where there was a detachment of the Philippine Scouts, bombed by Jap planes on the second day right after the attack on Pearl Harbor ), Pinamanculan, Bonbon, Ambago and Libertad.

Down south were San Vicente, Bit-os, Bitan-agan, Bugabus, San Mateo, Tungao, Dankias and Mandamo. Up north were Agusan Pequeno, Bading, Babag, Maug, Bansa and Magallanes (both former sites of the poblacion until moved because of the yearly floods to Agao, the present site). Lumbucan and Masao were sitios of Magallanes. Magallanes provided fresh fish like the banak, pigok, etc. crabs and the seasonal hipon (shrimp) and uyap (shrimp fry).

My grandpa used to take me on a baroto ride on the small rivers in the Bansa, Masao, Libertad rivers to buy nipa for roofing. I was then familiar with laksoy production. These barrios were the outer perimeters that surrounded the "poblacion". These provided the community with agricultural products such as coconut that provide kopras, lana (oil), husks, silhig (broom) and others; rice (the ilon-ilon, raminad, San Pablo varieties) - produced in the basakan for 6 months, and the upland rice (the aromatic "kurikit"); corn, tubers, vegetables, fowls, animals, fruit trees; a hundred more crops.

The poblacion then was limited to El Filibusterismo St. (radio station DXJM area) in the home of Tio Pilo and Tia Pion Montilla, the river bend at the end of Silongan and Mabini Streets, to the south the post office (present) area to the north, the Catholic cemetery to the west and the Agusan River to the east. Montilla Boulevard at that time was mostly mudflats. In the 50's and early 60's, the kids used to walk to the "guimba" southwest of the cemetery to get the "bagon" (vine) they used as missiles for their sling shots in the traditional turf war between the Agao and La-od boys using Guingona Park (today known as Rizal Park) as the battle ground.

The area north of the current post office up to Bading was called Poyohon. Road infrastructures were then connected by gravel roads to San Vicente, Agusan Pequeno and towards the towns of Buenavista, Nasipit, Carmen; I think all the way to Misamis Oriental (I had not gone to the latter areas then). And to the east up to Surigao was gravel road starting from Baan. Some of the streets in the poblacion were constructed from corals or "pagang". When it rained the streets were not flooded - unlike today - because of good drainage and the “pagang” easily absorbed the waters.

Beside Jose Basa (now Lagnada) St. was a huge canal or "embornal” stretching from the present office of the Superintendent of Schools, passing underneath Juan Luna, Magallanes, Silongan and Mabini Streets towards the river bank. We used to fish in that canal that was then covered sometime in late 50's or early 60's. Juan Luna St. was adorned on the west side with big acacia trees that gave way to street expansion and concreting. Acacia trees can still be found at Buhangin, Mahay, San Vicente.

Transportation in the poblacion was the calesa or tartanilla drawn by horses, bicycles or "cadilakad" (jocular contraction of Cadillac and lakad). Carabao-drawn carts called balsahan were used in going to the barrio. There were only a few trucks. The first car that I know of was the one owned by Tio Mateo Tupaz who was the manager of the Butuan Sawmill, owned by Rafael Consing. It was a black Ford sedan, l930's model, with step board on each side; to start the engine, one had to crank it.

We used to ride on weekends to Agusan Pequeño and San Vicente. Barotos (wooden dug-out boats) plied the Agusan River and its tributaries. To go to Baan (no bridge yet) one had to take a baroto. Or some enterprising individuals (males mostly) would go to a secluded place, undressed, held up his folded clothes with one hand, swam across the river and go with the current towards the other side.

Motor launches ("lantsa") were available. Insek Vicente DySeko, a well-respected Chinese businessman and probably the wealthiest, who spoke fluent Spanish with my grandma, operated the “Silvestre” that brought merchandise to the towns up river for sale or barter with forest products like oway (round rattan poles) and balaba (split rattan) and agricultural produce back to Butuan. The other river launch was the “Hele”, I think it was owned by the Ong Yiu's, shipped lumber to upriver towns for sale or in exchange for farm and forest products.

Most of the houses had backyards planted to different fruit trees and vegetables; the front yards to flowers of several varieties. Some yards were fenced with hardwood, bamboos or bahi (ironwood) to keep the pigs or dogs from straying. A few had the US standard toilet with flushing water; others just a toilet bowl where one had to pour a pail of water. Several hundred more used the antipolo-type toilet attached on small structures joined with a "taytayan" or wooden bridge several feet from the ground, and for one-storey houses anybody just walked a few feet away to the C.R. All the houses had galvanized water tanks to save rain water for drinking. Some had deep wells for laundry and cleaning.

Several artesian wells were located in several public places of the town. What year they were installed, I have no idea, but the water passed through 4-to 5-inch diameter water pipes embedded down the ground for several feet and flowed continuously non-stop throughout the years as I can remember until it dried up sometime in the late 50's. The residents, including myself, used to take a bath in the nearby communal well ("poso") while the women washed the clothes. That was where town gossip spread fast, not yet in today's beauty rumor parlors. The artesian wells were enclosed in concrete structures divided into 4 to six compartments.

One "poso" was located near the hospital, another in front of Mano Miguel Bokingo's residence at Mabini Street just a walking distance from our house. The third I can remember was that well at the corner of Zamora and Juan Luna Streets on the property of Mana Oding Low. There were also some up north whose exact location I can no longer remember. Across the river, in Baan, near the house of Mano Sanong and Mana Anang Piencenaves, parents of Flora Albarracin, our former Assistant Provincial Treasurer during our time at the provincial capitol, was a flowing artesian well, when lit, caused it to emit flames. There were two concrete water reservoir tanks, one installed at the back of the present police department - the old provincial capitol which in later years became the city hall - and the second just east a few feet from the present Puericulture Center.

The latter sunk halfway due to the strong earthquake sometime in the 20's or 30's that caused some streets to crack wide open. My grandpa would tell us that he was one of those who rescued a woman who fell into one of the fissures.

The same earthquake caused the old Catholic church in Bansa, at the entrance of the Bansa River, to sink, showing only part of the belfry now almost totally engulfed by a balete tree. On top of the church was the Del Rosario sawmill. We inspected this area with Mano Etoy Flores sometime in the 80's and found some burnt candles. It was reported that hundreds of years earlier Muslim pirates burned that church. An antique crucifix was earlier discovered and given to Mano Pioy del Rosario.

Life was simple for the ordinary folks. They dressed simply in camisa de chino, camesadentro, t-shirts, short sleeves polo barong with khaki or maong pants. For the well-to-do, particularly government officials, they wore mostly white shark skin suits with bow ties, white or black and white leather shoes, a Panama hat. Buri hats were worn by the ordinary individuals. For the officials, the baston (cane) carved with intricate designs indicated authority. But the ordinary folks had the same passion as the affluent - siesta time - reportedly a Spanish influence, a daily routine on their rattan hammocks ("duyan"), or on bamboo or bahi beds in their backyards.

Homes of the affluent were constructed of the best materials, like tugas, bayong, narra with iron zinc roofings, windows made of capiz shells framed by narra wood. For the average family, the houses were made of low class lumber; many had nipa walls, or bamboo splits, sometimes the floorings were split bamboos or bahi (palm tree). Many of these houses were burned by the guerillas in 1942 to prevent usage by the Japanese.

On the industrial side, there were the Butuan Sawmill, the Ong Yiu Sawmill, the sawmill operated by Mr. Kellog who also owned the Gomoco Mining Company in Rosario, Gibung, and the Butuan Electric plant.

I still remember some names then well-known in town such as Governor Jose Rosales, his wife, Apo Pascual, the brother of my grandma, Diego Rosales, Mano Eli Rosales, Tia Elisa Ochoa, a Dr. Pedro Calo, Dr. Manuel Santos, a Dr. Padua, a certain Aruj of Arab descent, Mano Pedro Torralba, Quirino Torralba, Francisco Rosales, Miguel Bokingo, Insek Vicente DySeko, Silvestre Dy, a Jose Azote, Ramon Burdeos, Telong Montalban, Ester Luna, Rafael Consing, Atty. Andaya and others too many to mention. There were several foreigners who worked in the Kellog sawmill and the mining camp in Gomoco. Andres Spandonis of Greek ancestry was a familiar face in town.

There was a certain tall individual, a Khilomeir (spelling unsure), I think a German, who the kids were afraid of. Grandparents used to tell the kids to stay away from him because he was out to kidnap children, kill them and their blood to be splattered in the mines so gold nuggets will come out. The old folks used to warn kids to come home before six in the evening so they could join the Angelus prayers, now sadly no longer a common practice.

I was then in Grade One in 1941 and I can still vividly recall all those I mentioned in the previous paragraph. History tells us that the Philippines was bombed by the Japanese a day after Pearl Harbor. That would be the Feast of the Immaculate Concepcion. We grade schoolers were in our classes that clear afternoon when we heard a sudden loud explosion in Bancasi. We learned that the Japanese planes had bombed the military installation there. Everyone was ordered to go home.

My cousin, Nonoy Tupaz, myself and other children ran towards Silongan Street where the Tupaz residence was located. We hurried on our feet along the "embornal" (culvert pipe) through side pathways. Nonoy would shout "Hoy, Roging, lagoy pagdali" (Hey, Roging, you better run fast.) Days after, my grandparents, who cared for me early in my younger days, brought me to Mandamo and I never saw Butuan until almost four years later. My family all those years evacuated not only in Mandamo but to other places like Esperanza where my mom, Gracia R. Go, had a 3-storey house just up on a promontory of the town at the corner of Wawa RIver and Agusan River. The first floor was a store where we employed a Muslim worker.

We also stayed in Santa Fe where a farm house was built. There, we experienced food shortage because of locusts infestation and had to buy rice from Tagabaca where it took days to travel back and forth.

The buildings and structures in 1940-41 that I still could remember were: the provincial hospital located at south end of Silongan and Mabini Streets near the river bend where strong currents occur during flood time. In that river bend there was a legend that under the "lilo^" (whirlpool) a huge underground cave existed up to Vinapor, Carmen. Kids were afraid to go near because of the "kugtong” (sea monster) which swallowed kids. The hospital was bombed by US planes during the liberation. The ground area was then used by the AHS - in the 50's as garden where students prepared the plots on a Saturday and by next Monday vegetable plants were already ready to harvest, thanks to the smart boys in our class.

The Provincial Jail was then located in the AHS area where the Jose C. Aquino-donated school building was built in the 60's. It was also bombed. The jail housed the Japanese prisoners after the war. The PC barracks used to be in the area, at the rear section, now occupied by the Agusan National High School. Further north, was the elementary school building and Gabaldon-type school building which was used as a temporary provincial hospital in 1945 right after the end of World War II. The Agusan Capitol building is the present police station. This was turned over by the provincial government to the city in later years. Another concrete building was located across at Juan Luna Street and del Pilar Street.

The Guingona Park had a kiosko, fountain and planted with royal palm trees (banga). At fiesta time this was full of people, bands or rondalla playing music; the estocada was performed by many Butuanons. And there were giant mannequins, popularly called "mga higante ni Tome" after the owner, Mano Tome Sanchez, roaming the park to the amusement of the residents who came out after Holy Mass from the Catholic church across the street.

In l968, the park was remodeled during the time of Mano Moling Sanchez with his wife Helen spearheading a fund drive with the Bayanihan Dance Troupe performing to the delight of patrons at the city gym. The old church constructed with first class lumber, like the tugas, magkono, stood in that area now where the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue is presently located. Across Zamora St. was the nuns' convent, now the kindergarten school. Further north, at the junction where Washington, Magallanes and Mabini Streets merged, just west of the present Philippine Ports Authority building was the public market, just across Life Bakery.

A few hundred meters from the PPA building was the old wharf where the Corregidor ship used to dock. This vessel which served the Manila-Butuan-Surigao trade route was hit by a Japanese mine in late 1941 at the Manila Bay, killing hundreds of passengers including some from Butuan such as the sister of Mano Moling, the wife of Mano Yoyong Garcia.

Of course, there were commercial buildings, sari-sari stores. Since they were our neighbors, I can't forget the store of Don Vicente DySeko, who I said earlier spoke fluent Spanish with my grandma. Inside that building were Chinese women whose feet were small, hardened or callous; walked like newly hatched chicks. I learned that at a certain age below seven to ten the women were required to wear iron shoes until adulthood to prevent them from committing adultery.

One such store was the Japanese-operated Butuan Bazaar where we used to buy toys. Once the Philippines surrendered in 1942 the Japanese employees were the first to take the reins of Butuan government.

After the war, we went back to the Butuan poblacion, built a house with a store downstairs at Silongan Street and I resumed my schooling.

After graduating from Agusan High School in 1953, I enrolled at the University of the East and finished Bachelor in Business Administration four years after. My first job was a bookkeeper for Angel Cembrano; then Mano Moling Sanchez asked me to handle his political HQ at the Ochoa Building in front of Life Bakery in his first reelection bid for Congress. This was where I met Emy, my wife, who was one of the clerks with Paying Sanchez and Elsa Radaza (maybe I will be spiritually guided or inspired to write about our love affair). From there on I was asked to manage the political headquarters whenever there was an election. This gave me experiences and insights about politics.

After the 1957 election - where Mano Moling won his first reelection as Congressman of the lone district of Agusan against Tito Guingona, who in later years became Vice President of the Philippines, Atty. Francisco Ro. Cupin and Fernando Gancayco, owner-operator of MASTRANCO bus company and rice mill - I joined the Butuan Rural Bank owned by the family of Mano Moling Sanchez. I started as Assistant Bookkeeper, was promoted to several supervisory positions until I was appointed Manager in l970.

(An interesting sidelight to the reelection bid of Mano Moling: This was a four-cornered congressional fight with Tito Guingona running as independent Nacionalista, Mano Moling Sanchez as official NP candidate, Mano Ingkoy Cupin as the official Liberal Party bet, and Fernando Gancayco as an independent. Gancayco was a native of Catanauan, Quezon; a town mate of Mr. Cipriano Luna, husband of Mana Ester Atega. Mr. Luna’s niece Mana Viring was married to Mano Diyong Villanueva.)

At the rural bank, I had the opportunity to revisit all those places mentioned in previous paragraphs. While still in the bank in 1979, I was surprised to be nominated, in my absence and without my knowledge of the process done in Malacañan, as Vice Governor of Agusan del Norte. Elected overwhelmingly in l980 over my two rivals, both lawyers, my term lasted for six years (our term limit then) until the Edsa Revolution. I served on under President Cory for a fews weeks until my replacement took over in that revolutionary government.

I had the privilege of serving either as president or as chairman of the board of several organizations like the Agusan Council Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Farmers and Bankers Club, Butuan Museum Foundation, Philippine Mental Health Association and the Puericulture Center to mention a few. While politicians enticed me to go back to politics, I opted to bring my wife Emy and four of our qualified children to California. I worked with Bank of America from which job I have already retired.

N.B. Encouraged by two of my good friends, Vic de Jesus and Jody Navarra, I write this piece about the good old Butuan, with more to come.

May billboard din po niyan dito sa ZC and when a ZC forumer did a bit of research, he found out na those tarps / billboards / announcements can be found in many other countries around the world. Quite disturbing pero I doubt it would happen. :)

Right you are stern ^^:okay:

You wont get lost in Butuan stern it's not as big as Zambo city.

Just make sure you take the correct jeepney Route or if in doubt, better tell the jeepney driver where you're heading or you'll end up going round & round the city hhehe..

:)

I think it would be fun getting lost in some city from time to time. You'd never know what you'd discover in that out-of-the-itinerary adventure! I think there's a bigger possibility of people getting lost in Butuan than they would here. You see, the mass public transport here all lead or go to one place - the city's central business district. Once there, you can basically just go around the central business district.. by foot (well, that is if you've got great stamina)! Yes, Zamboanga City is geographically vast but it's CBD isn't really a gigantic maze. You can find most of the major establishments here in an approx 1 to 2km radius zone. Pretty compact isn't it? It's just in the recent decade/s that big establishments have begun sprouting outside the CBD.
