A Brown, in a discolsure

PhiGold Ltd., a holding

Cayman Islands which in turn
controls 40% of the voting
shares in PhiGold Metallic
Ore, Inc., the gold miner
behind operations in Surigao

purchase cost will be paid
immediately from available
funds, while the remaining

funds within the next two
years, the disclosure stated.

hi dayana.i am no expert on plants....but i will try to answer ur questions.

for sure, these are palm plants...... in butuan and neighboring areas, the two most common and abundant of these are the nipa palm (Nipa fruticans Wurmb.) and sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb., local name is Lumbia).

both the 2 plants are important economic crops in butuan especially in early times....main use of both are for thatching (e.g. roof for house) and basketry.

in Butuan however, nipa is popular as source material for "laksoy" nipa wine. nipa wine distillery is practiced even today. the sago palm or lumbia on the other hand is important as raw plant material for making "palagsing", a local delicacy. From wikipedia:

Palagsing” is a local delicacy popularly made in Banza, one of the old poblacion of Butuan City. The popularity of making “Palagsing” in Banza is attributed to the abundance of Lumbiya (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) where “Unaw”(lumbiya starch) is harvested from the Palm Tree. Another popular ingredient is young coconut meat taken from coconut trees. The mixture of “unaw”, young coconut, and brown sugar make “palagsing” moist and chewy. They are delicately wrapped by banana leaves and are boiled for 30 minutes to create the soft consistency of “palagsing.”

i think the one in the picture is nipa....but am not sure because the 2 look quite similar especially when they are young...

DOH turns over new P10-million peso hospital to PNP

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 4 (PIA) - Ten months and twenty-two days after its cornerstone was laid on January 10, 2011, the Caraga Center of Health and Development, Department of Health Regional Office (CHD-DOH) turned over the new P 10-million peso hospital to the management of the Philippine National Police, Friday morning.

The new Police Regional Office 13 Hospital, a ten-bed capacity facility with a floor area of 810 square meters is located within the 1,800 square meters lot area owned by the Philippine National Police, at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez Compound, Brgy. Libertad this City.

The hospital has an emergency room, a conference room, an administrative section, business office, dental room, laboratory section, out-patient department, storage area, nurses station, male and female ward, isolation room, delivery room, utility room and a kitchen, which will function as an emergency obstetric and a newborn care or birthing facility.

PNP chief Gen. Nicanor Bartolome did the honors of receiving the keys of the new health facility. With General Bartolome were also top officials from Camp Crame led by PDir. Victorino Panganiban, Jr., chief of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Eastern Mindanao. Top police regional officials were also present led by Caraga PNP chief PCSupt. Reynaldo S. Rafal.

In his welcome message, CSupt. Rafal said that the new PNP Hospital “is a realization of a dream.” He said that the new health facility will provide better access to quality hospital facilities and health care to police personnel and their dependents, as well as, the community.

PNP Chief Bartolome during his acceptance message thanked the Department of Health for including the police among the beneficiaries of the Aquino Health Agenda through the health department’s program of “DOH Kalusugang Pangkalahatan.”

He added a five-storey hospital is also under construction at Camp Crame also with the help of the DOH. This will be completed in six months, he said.

Butuanons join the Million Volunteer Run

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 4 (PIA) -- The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Agusan del Norte-Butuan City Chapter spearheaded today’s Million Volunteer Run with the theme “Run for Humanity.” Students, government employees and partner stakeholders assembled at the Agusan del Norte Covered Court around 5:30 a.m. for a short program.

Some 350 participants from different sectors joined in the Million Volunteer Run. The route followed during the run was Agusan del Norte Covered Court-City Hall-Ochoa Avenue-Guingona Street-Capitol Covered Court.

Participants received certificates of appreciation.

PRC Agusan del Norte-Butuan City Chapter Administrator Mr. Teddy Cairo said that the formula to alleviate human suffering in the buffet of disasters is the mobilization of millions of Red cross volunteers supported by robust technological capabilities.

Students plant trees for environmental protection

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 4 (PIA) -- High school ad college students here have shown support to environmental protection through a tree planting activity held Saturday at Brgy. Anticala. The activity was aimed at rehabilitating critical watershed and key biodiversity areas of Caraga Region.

According to Fr. Chito “Kits” Butardo, school administration of different higher education institutions and from the high school signified their support to save the Taguibo Watershed, which is the only source of potable water in Butuan and some portions of Agusan del Norte.

“The activity is also part of the advocacy campaign of the Save Taguibo Watershed Network (STWN) to inform the general public of their role as concerned citizens living in Butuan City,” Butardo said.

“Light Up Butuan” ceremonial switch-on held

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 3 (PIA) -- The city government here has conducted the “Light Up Butuan” ceremonial switch-on Friday night.

In his speech, Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. said the activity is just a kick-off to the world’s longest Christmas celebration. He added the longest Christmas celebration is in the Philippines.

“We have experienced trials in our lives… and may these trials will turn into challenges, hope and inspiration as we jointly celebrate the birth of our Savior,” Mayor Amante said.

The local chief executive pointed out that in the spirit of Christmas, we should not lose hope because there is always a star that brightens the darkest night.

Amante further calls on every Butuanon to take part and join with the government in an effort to achieve progress and development in the city.

Meanwhile, Sangguniang Panlungsod members led by Vice Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun led the flying of sky lanterns...

Caraga DRRMC, warns public to take caution in celebrating Yuletide Season

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 3 (PIA) -- The chairperson of the Caraga Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) called its partners and members to take pre-emptive actions to avert any potential disaster during the celebration of this year’s yuletide season.

RDRRMC chairperson and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) regional director Dr. Blanche T. Gobenciong warned the public to take caution on the use of Christmas lights and buying of toys with toxic chemicals.

She cited the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) issuance of notice to the public to purchase and use only products especially sets of Christmas lights that bear the import commodity clearance (ICC) mark for proper performance of the product and safe celebration of the season.

hi dayana.i am no expert on plants....but i will try to answer ur questions.

for sure, these are palm plants...... in butuan and neighboring areas, the two most common and abundant of these are the nipa palm (Nipa fruticans Wurmb.) and sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb., local name is Lumbia).

both the 2 plants are important economic crops in butuan especially in early times....main use of both are for thatching (e.g. roof for house) and basketry.

in Butuan however, nipa is popular as source material for "laksoy" nipa wine. nipa wine distillery is practiced even today. the sago palm or lumbia on the other hand is important as raw plant material for making "palagsing", a local delicacy. From wikipedia:

Palagsing” is a local delicacy popularly made in Banza, one of the old poblacion of Butuan City. The popularity of making “Palagsing” in Banza is attributed to the abundance of Lumbiya (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) where “Unaw”(lumbiya starch) is harvested from the Palm Tree. Another popular ingredient is young coconut meat taken from coconut trees. The mixture of “unaw”, young coconut, and brown sugar make “palagsing” moist and chewy. They are delicately wrapped by banana leaves and are boiled for 30 minutes to create the soft consistency of “palagsing.”

i think the one in the picture is nipa....but am not sure because the 2 look quite similar especially when they are young...

BUTUAN CITY, Dis. 5 (PIA) -- Nagkatigum ang mga magtutudlo sa tibuok nasud gikan sa mga tulunghaan sa sekundarya alang sa gipahigayong ika – 22 nga Pambansang Komperensya sa Kasaysayan at Kalinangan, nga gipahigayon sa Red Palm Convention Hall ni’ng dakbayan bag-ohay pa lamang.

Tumong niini nga mapaabot ang pakigtambayayung sa mga magtutudlo ngadto sa lokal nga panggamhanan alang sa mga proyekto nga maoy makahatag sa kalambuan sa dakbayan.

R&D Veep Shares Biodiversity Conservation Experience in China

Dr. Rowena P. Varela, VP for Research and Extension, traveled to Guangzhou, China on November 6-26, 2011 to take part in the Workshop on Biodiversity Conservation and Management organized by the South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) with the sponsorship of the China Academy of Sciences (CAS) Bureau of International Cooperation.

She was chosen among the 20 participants awarded with a fellowship to join this international training program. The main objective of the workshop is for exchange of biodiversity conservation experiences among scientists in the China Academy of Sciences and the participants, and gain better understanding of Biodiversity Conservation and Management in China.

Experts from SCBG, Kunming Institute of Botany, Xishuangbanna Botanical Garden, South China Agricultural University and Institute of Microbiology, all under the umbrella of CAS are among the lecturers on Biodiversity Conservation & Management. The lectures are aimed at providing the participants with a better understanding on the underlying science and practices of biodiversity conservation. The topics include phylogeography and its role in biodiversity conservation & management, establishing and managing ecosystem research stations, effects of plant roots on soil microbial activity, conservation biology of rare and endangered species and implications for population restoration, invasiveness and ecological effects of alien species, information on Chinese biodiversity monitoring network, ethnobiology and its contribution to biodiversity conservation, molecular biology and bioinformatics, and field expedition to the typical research stations in China, among others. Teaching and discussion combined with field work were used in the training course. Furthermore, the participants were toured to SCBG Gardens, Dinghushan Nature Reserve, Nansha Wetlands and Hainan Tropical Rainforests namely: Bawangling, Jienfengling and Yalong Bay Nature Reserve at Sanya for better understanding of the biodiversity conservation and management.

The participants of the workshop are biodiversity and conservation researchers, museum curators and other biodiversity-related workers from Peru, Colombia, Madagascar, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Almost all participants are from countries regarded as megadiversity countries but also listed as ‘hotspots’ due to the critical status of the biodiversity as a consequence of the rapidly expanding human population.

On her presentation of biodiversity experiences, Dr. Varela shared her researches and activities on biodiversity conservation in Agusan Marsh. She highlighted her research activities on aquatic insect diversity in the area of landscape ecology and on the development of agricultural and tree plantation in the buffer zones of Agusan Marsh. She likewise shared the role that the Caraga State University played in the conservation and management of Agusan Marsh and other critical ecosystems in Caraga Region by talking about the Research and Development Agenda (RDE Agenda) of the university.

Through this international workshop, Dr. Varela has discussed areas of collaboration with SCBG and with the China Academy of Forestry (CAF). The specific areas are on Carbon Flux monitoring, ecological studies in relation to forest restoration after natural and human-induced disturbances, and on water yield monitoring of forests. She started establishing collaboration with the China Academy of Sciences - Bureau of International Collaboration to send more faculty-researchers for training, both in the degree and non-degree programs.

CSU champs 5th NorMinFAS contests

Caraga State University joined the 5th Northern Mindanao Federation of Agriculture Students (NorMinFAS) last 23-25 November 2011 at Central Mindanao University with the theme: “Enhancing Agroforestry: A Response to Climate Change”.

The 5th NorMinFAS comprised competitions in which CSU won 2nd place in Flower Arrangement; 3rd place in Insect Identification; and 2nd place in Battle of the Brains, accordingly.

It was the very first time for CSU to participate the event, as per invitation, thus entitled with “observer status”. Nevertheless, the university bagged some of the NorMinFAS contests.

Indeed, CSU had manifested that she has the sense of quality and excellence.

It is definitely expected that the university's performance in the next NorMinFAS will be more competitive.

BUTUAN CITY, Dis. 5 (PIA) -- Nagkatigum ang mga magtutudlo sa tibuok nasud gikan sa mga tulunghaan sa sekundarya alang sa gipahigayong ika – 22 nga Pambansang Komperensya sa Kasaysayan at Kalinangan, nga gipahigayon sa Red Palm Convention Hall ni’ng dakbayan bag-ohay pa lamang.

Tumong niini nga mapaabot ang pakigtambayayung sa mga magtutudlo ngadto sa lokal nga panggamhanan alang sa mga proyekto nga maoy makahatag sa kalambuan sa dakbayan.

Assn. of Brgy Captains to construct embalming bldg. in Butuan

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 6 (PIA) -- The Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) here is planning to construct an embalming building for indigent Butuanons.
This is the announcement made by ABC president and Banza Brgy. Capt. Nestor Amora in an interview with a local radio station here recently.
The official said this is part of the organization’s programs for 2012 in an effort to assist indigent Butuanons for the embalming of their cadavers.
To date, Amora said the league has only allocated budget for burial assistance to indigent residents in the city. He added the burial assistance does not include embalming fees.
Amora said the building will be constructed in Barangay San Vicente, this city. He added instead of the usual Php1,200 embalming fee, indigent people will only have to pay P300.
Amora, however, said the barangay captain will shoulder the Php300 embalming fee should the embalming building will already be constructed. “Thus, this lessens the burden of the bereaved family,” Amora said.
The ABC president of the city stressed the program was already approved by the city government and fund will be sourced out from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

BUTUAN CITY PIONEERS LAUNCHING OF E-BLOTTER IN MINDANAO



(December 2, 2011) – The prime Crime Incident Reporting System in Mindanao was officially launched at the Butuan City Police Office today in the presence of PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome.

To augment peace and order measures and prevent proliferation of crime incidents in the city, the E-blotter system of the Philippine National Police was created to allow fast and accurate reporting of crime incidents and prevent tampering of police records. Also, through this new system, the local police could easily track and monitor the efficiency its personnel from different stations in responding to various crime situations. Information from the PNP substations will be sent to the headquarters and then entered into the database. This project is jointly developed by the Information Technology Management System (ITMS) and Directorate for Investigation in Detective Management (DIDM).

BUTUAN CITY PIONEERS LAUNCHING OF E-BLOTTER IN MINDANAO



(December 2, 2011) – The prime Crime Incident Reporting System in Mindanao was officially launched at the Butuan City Police Office today in the presence of PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome.

To augment peace and order measures and prevent proliferation of crime incidents in the city, the E-blotter system of the Philippine National Police was created to allow fast and accurate reporting of crime incidents and prevent tampering of police records. Also, through this new system, the local police could easily track and monitor the efficiency its personnel from different stations in responding to various crime situations. Information from the PNP substations will be sent to the headquarters and then entered into the database. This project is jointly developed by the Information Technology Management System (ITMS) and Directorate for Investigation in Detective Management (DIDM).

Liga College may operate next school year

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 7 (PIA) -- Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) president and Banza punong barangay Nestor Amora expressed hope that the Liga College will be operational in June, 2011 in time for the opening of classes.

The Liga College is one of the priority projects of the ABC here in support to the Social Development Agenda on Education, as embodied in the Regional Development Plan of Caraga Region.

In an interview with a local radio station here recently, Brgy. Capt. Amora said the said college will offer scholarship to more than 600 students in the province.

“We will only be offering one course as recommended by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Assistant Regional Director Dr. Anastacio Martinez and that is on business and entrepreneurship,” Amora added.

Amora explained this aimed to teach the students to be businessmen and entrepreneurs in the future, and not just mere employees or workers.

Amora further said CHED Officials are set to check the building and facilities by April 2012. He said he was optimistic that barring problems during the inspection, the CHED will issue the school's permit to operate. (PIA-Caraga)

“Renew business permits earlier,” businessmen in Butuan told

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 7 (PIA) -- Businessmen and entrepreneurs here were urged to renew their permits early in January next year to avoid penalties.

This was the call made by Mr. Paul Cabrera, chief of the licensing and permit division of the city government here, in an interview with a local radio here.

Cabrera said the deadline for the permit renewal is on January 20, 2011.

Aside from the businessmen and entrepreneurs, Cabrera also called the attention of tricycle operators to do the same.

“In this way, we can be sure that there will be smooth flow of operations in the application and renewal of business permits and license,” Cabrera said. (PIA-Caraga)

PNP-Caraga chief to police force: “Don’t fire guns on Christmas, New Year’s Eve”

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 7 (PIA) -- Philippine National Police (PNP) Caraga Regional Director, General Reynaldo Rafal warned police officers not to fire their guns on Christmas and New Year’s eve.

Gen. Rafal explained the order came from the higher authorities in Camp Crame and all police officers in the country must follow the order.

Firearms issued to police officers should be sealed-off before December 24, 2011 to ensure public safety. The practice has been done in previous years. “In this way, the people will celebrate happily and peacefully,” the official said.

The official said whoever violates the order will be dealt with accordingly.(PIA-Caraga)
