I think that Flyover project (if it materializes) is a proactive move by the city for the potential traffic concerns in the near future. Butuan is a growing city not to mention a Regional Center. So it is just fitting that they have the proper infrastructures to meet the growing demands of it's residents, investors, visitors etc..

Electrification program for remote communities
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
January 15, 2012, 3:02pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – More households in far-flung communities are expected to benefit under the government’s Sitio Electrification Project (SEP) this year.

In the remote villages of Agusan del Norte and Butuan City alone, at least 1,466 household beneficiaries are being targeted to benefit under the SEP program in 2012.

The identified 36 sitios and puroks as household (connection) beneficiaries in Agusan del Norte and Butuan City as part of the P589.32 million SEP projects that will be part of the 833 sitios and puroks nationwide this year.

“We have already submitted these identified sitio and puroks to the National Electrification and Administration (NEA) for approval and implementation for the year 2012 up to 2015,” said Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative (Aneco) general manager Archetic Horacio T. Santos.

It was learned that the government had set aside P1.108 billion to hasten the implementation of two major electrification programs – the SEP and Barangay Line Enhancement Program (BLEP).

Alayon niini duna nay ilang nakab-ot nga master plan sa tibook lalawigan ug dakbayan sa Butuan.

“…I would like to assure the people, di man ta mag-ampo nga mahitabo na diri sa ato (we’re not praying that this will happen to us), but I would like to assure our people that if ever nga mahitabo na, I think we are much better prepared now,” ang pamahayag ni Gov. Erlpe John M. Amante. (PGO Agusan del Norte-PIO/PIA-Agusan del Norte)

 agree!:)

DOST Grants Php1.2M to Butuan City

(January 9, 2012) - The start of 2012 proved to be bountiful for the Butuan City Government after receiving Php1.2 Million from the Department of Science and Technology. Said amount is intended for one (1) bioreactor unit which will be used to convert biodegradable waste into fertilizer, in support of the city’s Clean Ground, Zero Waste Program (CGZW).

DOST Caraga Regional Director Mr. Lyndo G. Villacorta personally handed over the check to City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. and CGZW Program Coordinator Ruth Jugao last January 6, 2012.

A bioreactor is a machine that grinds and converts biodegradable solid waste into compost, a good fertilizer for vegetable crops. Biodegradable waste includes spoiled/wilted vegetables, fruit peels, meat/fruit/vegetable trimmings, food leftovers, fish entrails/trimmings, leaves/twigs, and seeds, among others.

The Langihan Public Market Public is one of the major sources of biodegradable waste daily, as stated by Ms. Jugao. At present, biodegradable waste from the market are distributed to Barangays Ampayon and Bit-os for the vermiculture project.

Dr. Villacorta further said that he was glad that DOST was tapped to take part in strengthening the campaign on Solid Waste Management as part of the convergence efforts between the City Government and Regional Line Agencies for a more efficient public service to the people of Butuan City. - CMO-PIO

by IronPrince Do we have a traffic problem in butuan? I don't think so. Overpass are big fat cows for those politicians. Oh come on, as if you were born yesterday, there is always the SOP's and kickbacks.

Yes, the intersection is the busiest part in butuan since that is the center or heart of Butuan. Don't tell me it's Gaisano or City Hall cause it's not. That area will definitely die off. Try to go under the flyover on other cities, so that you'll have an idea.

This project i warn you. Will just ruin the looks of your beloved city.

I think you should also go to other 1st world cities so that you'll be exposed how their cities work. Go!!!

I think you don't have to go far to First World Cities...by just taking a look at this multiple fly-over complex in Ortigas area....which became more alive after it was eased out of traffic bottlenecks after these fly-overs were built. Do you think Robinsonsland became bankrupt with their Ortigas developments just because a complex of fly-overs stand near it??.....or do you think Mama Mary's image shed blood just because a complex of fly-over made the place an eye-sore???

http://www.philippine-travel-guide.com/image-files/corner-of-edsa-and-ortigas-avenue.jpg

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd350/RonnieR_2008/DSC04924-1.jpg

you mean Die Out???.... you lack reason and logic....what you have are just pure bias and negativism

take a look at Ortigas area where a complex of fly-over stand....Eton Properties just developed the area near Corinthian..... If the area remained a choke point.....do you think big property developers will find it still enticing to invest??

http://www.eton.com.ph/images/news/2008082104.jpg

by IronPrince Now that i know of this project. I will have this investigated.

Huwat ug traffic? overpass is only a short term remedy dude... There is always flaring of streets and use of mass transportation like a city bus with proper loading and unloading bay perhaps elevated bays para dili pataka ug naog, maybe for now a coaster would do.

But still a waste of resources and an eyesore to the city.

investigate on what issue?.... or maybe you will be the one to be investigated for making libelous statements on this.....

SOIL TESTING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF FLYOVER NGA BA??? :sly:

(Photo taken this afternoon January 17,2012)

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4681/31301491.jpg

:

As to how I see it this is soil sampling kay naa pa man sa field but ang testing adto na sa laboratory. Through the bearing capacity maka design ang structural engineer kun unsa kalapara ug unsa kalawom ang foundation nga himoon for an expected traffic and loading.

An advance party consisting a group of Filipino & chinese visitors are expected to arrive I think January 27 or 28?

My humble opinion lang.

I think you don't have to go far to First World Cities...by just taking a look at this multiple fly-over complex in Ortigas area....which became more alive after it was eased out of traffic bottlenecks after these fly-overs were built. Do you think Robinsonsland became bankrupt with their Ortigas developments just because a complex of fly-overs stand near it??.....or do you think Mama Mary's image shed blood just because a complex of fly-over made the place an eye-sore???

you mean Die Out???.... you lack reason and logic....what you have are just pure bias and negativism

take a look at Ortigas area where a complex of fly-over stand....Eton Properties just developed the area near Corinthian..... If the area remained a choke point.....do you think big property developers will find it still enticing to invest??

investigate on what issue?.... or maybe you will be the one to be investigated for making libelous statements on this.....

I agree bob. I'm now living in a first world city which has more complicated flyovers than manila. all the establishments surrounding those flyovers are very much alive and kicking. :-)

the flyover will not be only to fasten the transportation from the different directions mate, it could also prevent accidents because of some people who wouldn't follow the protocols, specially when some accident occurred last december, so when the flyover is made people would no longer take an intersection thus making the flow of the traffic in a straight direction

iron prince is right. the proposed flyover(if ever this is true) will make that portion of the city look ugly! they should consider putting up a ROTUNDA instead. those who support this flyover thing are not learning their lessons from manila and other places.

ROTUNDAS are proven to be more effective and less costly too.

the money that will be used to construct this flyover should intead be used to build more school houses, more clean and modern TOILETS in the public schools and public hospitals. the money could also be used to build more rotundas in areas where there is heavy traffic(especially in langihan).

A rotunda is already being constructed near the airport FYI.

I have to disagree with your paragraph highlighted in bold. Sorry, but the city is overly focused on health care, public schools and all where only the least would be benefited. If this flyover won't be materialized, then they should turn their attention and divert funds to ugly roads, poor drainage, poor traffic lights and other poor infrastructure that can highly benefit the majority.

As what I have said, whether we like it or not, there is nothing we can do about this. Whether this project will push through or not, it's fine for us okay? You both (IronPrince and BeaverQube) cannot demolish or bring down this flyover all by yourselves nor kill the people behind this project. So quit whining and watch what will happen sometime soon. If you can't control your temper and want to be heard, then gather a people and hold a protest or do a "1,000,000 signatures campaign to protest the construction of the flyover". That's the best and appropriate thing to do so you'll be making headlines on TV and in print.

The purpose of the rotunda is to connect the main highway (Butuan-CDO-Iligan) with the diversion road and not just ease the traffic flow and for tourism purposes.

Yes, you are contributing your idea but do you think it will be heard by the proper authorities (DPWH, City Government)? If you want to recommend or advise the authorities to abort this flyover project then why not shout out and let your voice be heard in the airwaves? This forum is for the exchange of ideas but all you did was complain and complain and complain and yes, you have VALID reasons so why not let it be heard by the authorities? Hold a rally or send a formal letter stating your intention and reasons or something? There's nothing you can do unless you take action.

Public CR diay nang Ong Yiu Elementary School nga para mana sa mga studyante. Naa ba diay muadto diha para lang malibang or mangihi despite the fact nga lood gyud sa sulod? We have private CRs, we have CRs at home or at the office, we even have restaurants, ngano sa Ong Yiu pa man ka malibang? What I want for this administration is that dili sila mag pinataka ug gasto nga kanang wala nahibalo ang mga tao tapos dili kaayo magamit sa mga tao.

You want an example? Oh dia ra: let's say the city government spent 10,000,000 pesos for a certain road nga walay nanglabay tapos walay namuyo. Diba sayang? Unsaon man ang drainage, aspalto/kongkreto ug LED lights for a road project kung walay tao manglabay or kung naa, mga kabaw lang ug mang-uuma ang molabay. Then, nibundak ang ulan tapos after a few minutes, nagbaha na dayon ang usa ka portion sa boulevard kay walay drainage.

Diba sayang? Giuna nalang tana na ang drainage problem sa boulevard kesa sa mag allocate ug funds sa bisag unsa nga project nga wala magamit just like the example, kay Boulevard is a thoroughfare sa mga bus, private vehicles, multicabs, trikes etc. and considering nga daghay mga establishments side by side especially schools, hospitals, restaurants and banks.

Oh karon, musugot ka nga baha kaayo ang siyudad, daghay nanglutaw nga basura, dugmok na kaayo ang mga kalsada for as long as hinlo ang CR sa Ong Yiu Elementary School?

Tan-awa karon, nadayon ba ang MDG river park project? Ang south supermarket? Gipaundang man to ni Amante diba then 1 year na siya kapin sa pagka Mayor tapos sa iyang pagka Mayor, naa man gyud nay mga budget appropriations ang Philippine Government. Pati ang local government maka-earn man gani ug kwarta diba?

My two cents. I hope you get my point.

You want an example? Oh dia ra: let's say the city government spent 10,000,000 pesos for a certain road nga walay nanglabay tapos walay namuyo. Diba sayang? Unsaon man ang drainage, aspalto/kongkreto ug LED lights for a road project kung walay tao manglabay or kung naa, mga kabaw lang ug mang-uuma ang molabay. Then, nibundak ang ulan tapos after a few minutes, nagbaha na dayon ang usa ka portion sa boulevard kay walay drainage.

Diba sayang? Giuna nalang tana na ang drainage problem sa boulevard kesa sa mag allocate ug funds sa bisag unsa nga project nga wala magamit just like the example, kay Boulevard is a thoroughfare sa mga bus, private vehicles, multicabs, trikes etc. and considering nga daghay mga establishments side by side especially schools, hospitals, restaurants and banks.

Oh karon, musugot ka nga baha kaayo ang siyudad, daghay nanglutaw nga basura, dugmok na kaayo ang mga kalsada for as long as hinlo ang CR sa Ong Yiu Elementary School?

Tan-awa karon, nadayon ba ang MDG river park project? Ang south supermarket? Gipaundang man to ni Amante diba then 1 year na siya kapin sa pagka Mayor tapos sa iyang pagka Mayor, naa man gyud nay mga budget appropriations ang Philippine Government. Pati ang local government maka-earn man gani ug kwarta diba?

My two cents. I hope you get my point.

Flyovers are needed in this country,
whereas;
to coup our leaders squatter mentality...
establish constricted national road...
a fun on widening setup...
adherence to relocating than planning ahead

There is no problem if road constructed in a far flung places with less population but in a long run the future is there... that's how first world countries plan...

iron prince is right. the proposed flyover(if ever this is true) will make that portion of the city look ugly! they should consider putting up a ROTUNDA instead. those who support this flyover thing are not learning their lessons from manila and other places.

That was a quote from you. My message is clearly applies to you both. Look who's not reading now. Read my post over and over again, apply the principle of redundancy if possible, until you ascertain who am I talking to okay? :)

Ka klaro anang taga butuan ko, nganu gud mapadpad ko diri if dil.. hahahah
Im just telling it would make the city ugly, and i don't want that to happen

what could be more DIRTIER than the kind of dirt that exist on a person's mind?

curiously, why do you think many rapidly growing cities the world over are building over-passes and under passes if by these structures alone can plunge the globe back to the age of dinosaurs?

why do livable cities continuously become more livable by investing in improvements in access and ease of transport??

if development for you is just measured in terms of the number of banana trees or patch of green sagbot ..... then you must leave the city of Butuan and try to live a green living on top of the mayapay.....there you can see nature at its raw glory

My humble opinion lang.

Why do you have to get a house there kaduol ra man anang CBR Franz, 30 minutes drive lang, di ba? more or less the same distance ng Nasipit.

My sister nga who is temporarily assigned in Bayugan, commutes everyday, she leaves the house at 7:00 in the morning & come home 8:30 pm or sometimes 9pm. It depends on how long she'll have to wait for the Bus.

Caraga could be the next Cagayan and Iligan, environment group says

By Erwin Mascariñas | Friday| January 20, 2012 | Filed under: Top Stories

BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/19 January) — Environmental groups warn that Caraga region could be the next environmental disaster area after Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities if the local government units and government agencies do not take action soon.

“As the capital of extractive activities in the Philippines and the number one region in climate change hot spot, no doubt, Caraga will suffer/experience same fate as that of Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City,” said Carl Cesar Rebuta, project development officer of the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center-Kasama sa Kalikasan (LRC-KsK).

In an online interview, the Cagayan de Oro-based environmental campaigner noted that Caraga hosts the most number of mining permits in the country, covering almost half of the total land area of 1.8 million hectares of the region. He said it is also the timber corridor of the Philippines and hosts most number of Industrial Forest Management Agreements (IFMA) permits.
“The remaining and fragile watershed of Caraga is threatened by these extractive activities,” said Rebuta.

He cited as example the case of Mt. Hilung-hilung in Cantilan-Carrascal, which is covered by an active mining operations, the case of Bukid dako and Bukid gamay of Placer. MRL Gold (Mindoro Resources Limited ) has an active exploration permit in the Lake Mainit areas. Mainit, Placer, and Tubod watershed areas are also at risk since it is now covered by mining operations of Philex. And several more in Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and even the Taguibo watershed issue in Butuan City are all plagued with mining and illegal logging operations, said Rebuta.

a sendong-like or worser disaster is possible to happen here in our region and anywhere in the Philippines....although we in Caraga like the rest of the country are not prepared enough for these eventualities i believe there are already on-going actions (by our leaders/gov't and even private sector) to reduce the risks;

we hear/read press releases/observe with our eyes;
-that the AgNorte gov't will be purchasing rescue boats....that they will look for means to improve waterways and drainage
-Butuan gov't is implementing the on-going dredging of canals/rehab of roads......is composing a new search and rescue team
-we hear LGUs in Caraga particularly Butuan and AgNorte are determined to create plan to relocate families living near river banks and make these areas free from inhabitants
-we see increasing movements to protect watershed (Taguibo and Mt. Hilong2x)
-we even see volunteer organization (Taga Butuan Kaw Kung....etc) who committed/mobilized themselves as watch group to monitor the rise of Agusan River/flood

and many many more.....

these are'nt enough and much must still be done, but we are going there....

wa sad tay mahimo ana sir kay i push through man jud na nila. naay mga negative or possitive ana nga projects but then, very thankful kay gi consider nila ang butuan na mabutangan og flyover which other city dont have. pero kung mao nay imong reaction we'll respect to that... usa ko sa mga mo support sa mga infra project sa butuan kay dako kaayo nang impact sa mga investors...

The project is a good addition to Butuan but i think nga dili ideal nga ipa-agi siya sa intersection. From what I know, there is a flyover in Cagayan de Oro that doesn't pass by an intersection and that should be the same thing done in Butuan para dili ma-daot ang view sa atong downtown. Maybe they could start from the Police Station down to FSUU gym or something since duol man diri ang mga police and it would be easier for them to be mobilized to ensure nga walay mahitabo nga crime under the flyover.

But since the government already decided where to place the flyover, let's just respect them and wish all the best for them and for our city.

More than 6,000 families to be relocated from Butuan's river banks
20-Jan-12, 3:12 PM | Erwin Mascarinas, InterAksyon.com
[Share This]

BUTUAN CITY – The city government recently signed an executive order to create a task force to handle the pre-emptive evacuation and relocation of more than 6,000 families living outside the flood walls of the Agusan River.

Executive Order No.53 signed last week created Task Force Likas to undertake the operation. “We have learned our lesson from what Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City suffered after Sendong.

A budget of 40 million is allocated for the operation of the task force,” said Butuan City Mayor Jun Amante who also heads the created task force. He cited a big threat to Butuan City, being the catch basin of the Davao-Compostaella Valley range through the Agusan River.

He said Compostella Valley already suffers from the impact of poor weather conditions coupled with a degraded forest environment.

Amante said the Agusan River has had a history of swelling every now and then in the past 20 years, flooding the city. In recent years it has become a more annual occurrence. The City's Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC) focal person Gracia Burdeos-Espere, said the group is now in the implementation stage of a five-year project targeted at risk reduction.

“From January 24 to 26, we will meet with the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to review on the commitments on the planning and implementation together with the Office of Civil Defense. The city can only do so little since the river covers most of Caraga Region; we need the commitment of other concerned government agencies,” Espere said.

Feature: Butuan Search and Rescue Team: Saving lives as a way of life

by Christopher E. Simogan and Desiree Tandayag

It was a fine day on October 15, 2011 when 37 individuals gathered at Luna Compound, Barangay Bading, Butuan City to undergo the 10-day Modified Medical & Technical Rescue Operation Course offered by the City Government of Butuan. The training was conducted by the country’s premiere rescue doctor, Dr. Ted Esguerra, and his team of Emergency Medical Service volunteers.

Most of the participants came from the different Local Government Offices who were recommended by their respective Department Heads. The trainees bravely faced the challenge of going through the rigid training of the next generation’s rescue unit, unmindful of the impending hardships they would have to endure in the course of the training.

For the next 10 days, the trainees learned Water Search and Rescue, Mountain Search and Rescue, Rope Technique, Basic Trauma Life Support, Basic Life Support, Water Survival and Boat Handling. Their daily routine included morning walks, breath-holding exercises and calisthenics. Perhaps their greatest hurdle was when they had to individually rappel down the Magsaysay Bridge towards the mighty Agusan River and swim approximately 1.5 kilometers back to the base camp in Bgy. Bading.

All 37 trainees completed the course and became the pioneer members of the new Butuan Search and Rescue Team (BUSART).

However, BUSART’s commitment is not only limited to search and rescue, the rescuers also participated in charitable works such as the Gasa Hong Pasko, a yearly gift-giving activity of the City Government to reach out to less fortunate constituents of the 86 barangays during the Christmas season. The team also joined Mayor Amante in distributing relief goods to the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

This year, BUSART is planning to train barangay rescue volunteers to empower barangay folks and make them capable of quickly responding to emergencies in their community, like how they did in Cayagayn de Oro city.

When Tropical Storm Sendong devastated Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City, leaving thousands of displaced families and casualties in its path, a 14-man team from the newly-formed BUSART was immediately deployed by Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. to help in the retrieval operations in Cagayan de Oro City.

For 5 days, the team worked with the CDO Central Fire Department and engaged in water and land retrieval operations in Barangay Balulang, Isla de Oro, Macasandig, and other hard-hit areas. BUSART members endured the scorching heat of the sun in what seemed to be an endless search for victims, hoping to find survivors underneath every pile of collapsed structures. The operation exposed the team to the actual rigors of search and retrieval works. They also had to act as big brothers and sisters to the many surviving children they met along the way.

The experience instilled in the young rescuers that their job is not easy. One must always be ready for humans are helpless against nature’s wrath. This sad and eye-opening experience changed the lives of every member and gave them strengthened faith that Butuan City was spared from such tragedy.

Since its creation in October 2011, BUSART has responded to numerous emergency cases in Butuan City including water search and rescue and vehicular accidents. The team is also actively involved in Butuan City’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management efforts. Team members are assigned in shifts to monitor the water level at the Agusan River Base 24 hours a day.

Life is indeed precious and every BUSART member values every person’s life as their own. Rescue has become their way of life. The next calamity may happen tonight or tomorrow, but Butuan residents can sleep a little more soundly knowing that there is a group of young and energetic individuals who stand ready to respond when disaster strikes.
