Butuan City’s drainage project funded through LGSF
Source: http://www.dilg.gov.ph

Butuan City can now say goodbye to its decades-old flood problem as a multi-million drainage project is underway in the heart of the city. which is being funded mainly out of its share in the national government’s Local Government Support Fund (LGSF).

Butuan City received the biggest chunk of the LGSF – a total of P60-million -- among other local government units (LGUs) in Caraga for being a recipient of the Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH). One of the criteria for the distribution of the LGSF is that the LGU should be an SGH recipient from the DILG.

The Seal of Good Housekeeping is being conferred to local governments that adhere to the tenets of good governance by complying with the Full Disclosure Policy and for having no adverse Commission on Audit (COA) report.

DILG XIII OIC-Regional Director Lilibeth Famacion said that the drainage project will also be supported by the city government under the leadership of Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. who pledged to chip in around P37.7-M from the city government funds.

“Being the catch basin of the flow of water in the region, the city is prone to flooding, which causes destruction to properties and displacement of residents. The flooding of the city is aggravated as the city has no proper drainage system,” said Famacion.

When completed, the drainage system will contain about 50 % floodwaters in the city, according to the city government’s engineering division which is responsible for the project’s supervision and ground works.

The lady director expressed hope that the project will not only improve the competitiveness of the city in terms of its tourism industry, but more importantly, its benefits will redound to all the Butuanons.

The Drainage Project, which includes the rehabilitation and de-clogging of the creeks in the target areas, will be implemented along T. Sanchez St. – Montilla Blvd. – Villa Kananga Creek and JCT. T. Calo – Villa Kananga Creek in the city. --- Florian Faith Jr. P. Bayawa

a city of "firsts"^^:cheers:MANILA, Philippines - The last week of June was a week of firsts for Butuan City as two institutions announced their Infoboard-driven partnership with wireless leader Smart Communications Inc.

http://imageshack.us/a/img401/3967/smartinfoboardsci7.jpg

The Butuan City government and the Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) have tapped Smart’s Infoboard, a Web-based solution offering SMS or text facility that enables communities to disseminate information to the mobile phones of subscribed members.

Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando Vea said, “We use this technology mainly for disaster mitigation and prevention, but the Infoboard has several other applications. Groups can take advantage of the Infoboard to broadcast timely, relevant, and accurate information such as advisories, reports and news.”

Smart community solutions consultant Dave Alaan said it was the first time for the Infoboard service to be used by a local government unit in Mindanao.

Butuan City Mayor Jun Amante recognized Smart for bringing the technology to their city.

“I believe that technology, such as the Infoboard service provided by Smart to the city of Butuan, is a great equalizer because the richest and the poorest alike, can access the same information at the shortest possible time,” Amante said.

It was also the first time in the entire Philippines that a school’s Radio Frequency (RF) ID system was linked to the Smart Infoboard service. With this, parents will no longer have to worry if their children are already inside the school’s premises or wonder what time they have left the campus.

http://imageshack.us/a/img100/5342/smartinfoboardsci7b250.jpg

Fr. John Young, FSUU president, said, “With our efforts to always improve services, in this case to improve security for students, we set up the RFID system in partnership with the Hive AVLS, which provides multimedia and business solutions. The timing was just right for this partnership with Smart, as we were then able to link the RFID system with the Infoboard, which I think is a wonderful idea.”

Now, parents will get SMS notifications when the students tap their IDs as they go in and out of the campus.

http://imageshack.us/a/img802/1450/smartinfoboardsci7c280.jpg

As they tested the new system during the launch, Francis Lim Sr., whose son is enrolled at FSUU, was amazed at how fast he received the notification.

“A few seconds was all it took,” Lim said. “I have only seen this technology being used abroad and it’s remarkable that it is now here in Butuan.”

656 kids join in the biggest football clinic in Butuan

By Eldie N. David

BUTUAN CITY, July 3 (PIA) -- Six hundred fifty-six children ages 6-12 years old participated in the biggest football clinic in Butuan City, dubbed the Kasibulan Football Grassroots Development Festival, which was organized by the Butuan-Agusan del Norte Football Association (BANFA) and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), Sunday.

The clinic, which is patterned after the successful German grassroots development program to introduce the game of football to children as young as six years old, was on its second leg of implementation. Its ultimate goal is producing high-caliber football players who will represent the country in international competitions under the Team Azkals, which has been bagging wins in tournaments. Azkals member Midfielder Chieffy Caligdong was a product of this program back in the early 1990s and is a living testimony to the success of the clinic.

Sixty-two coaches also underwent basic coaching course in football on June 29-30 as part of the clinic.

During the opening ceremony, Libertad Punong Barangay Vicente Rizal Rosario lauded the BANFA through the leadership of its president, Vice Mayor Lawrence “Law” Fortun, for promoting the sport in Butuan City and Agusan del Norte. It is now attracting a large number of enthusiasts. Councilor Erwin L. Dano also echoed the sentiment of Rosario in his message - calling Fortun his “mentor” in the Sangguniang Panlungsod, Dano noted the efforts of Fortun, who was able to ignite the interest of many children in the sport.

As part of the program, the coaches also became recipients of soccer balls from the PFF, which they can use in their continuing training of the children in their respective schools.

Subsequent legs of this program will take place on July 29, which, for the first time will take place at Brgy. Maguinda, Butuan City and on August 27 back at the Butuan City Sports Complex. (RER/NCLM/BC-VMO/PIA-Caraga)

Prov’l gov’t sets disaster protocol

BUTUAN CITY, July 6 (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Agusan del Norte recently convened different stakeholders from government and private sectors to present the council's Operation Center Protocol.

The meeting aimed to develop partnership between different agencies to respond to the community in times of calamities by means of developing an alert and verification protocol, protocol and issuance code alert and activation memorandum, and response protocol.

The code alert system is as follows:

Code White corresponds to low pressure area/tropical depression or public storm signal #1;

Code Blue for public storm signal #2 with five or more casualties/mass injuries/fire; and

Code Red for public storm signal #3 with 100 or more casualties/mass injuries.

According to Governor Erlpe John Amante, the provincial government has already purchased emergency and rescue equipment worth P8.4 million.

He added this will be used especially in coastal municipalities prone to flash floods and landslides.

Amante also emphasized that the best way to face calamities is to be prepared. He further said one way of doing it is to better equip the local government units in different municipalities to be able to respond to emergency situations.

Meanwhile, PDRRMC also proposed an infra-project to be funded under the 5 percent local disaster risk reduction and management fund to be used in four aspects namely, preparedness, prevention and mitigation, response and rehabilitation.

With these developments, Amante reiterated the importance of the member agencies in facilitating the community in their preparation for calamities, especially during the actual situation. (RER/DSM-PIA 13 Caraga)

this is not based on 'swerti'

the iPad and iPod awards is nothing compared to the honor the award has given to this boy and to the country and community he belongs.

a big inspiration to our youth who just sulk themselves in the comforts of mediocrity

other young people should emulate this young boy's example....though not necessarily in the field of academic pursuits ....but to any positive endeavor they wish to excel....with exemplary excellence

Budget Set For Airport Development
July 7, 2012, 5:56pm

BUTUAN CITY – The national government is set to expand and rehabilitate the National Airport Development Program in this city, one of the centers of commerce in Mindanao.

During the 71st Full Council Meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in this city, officials announced the R45.5-million budget of the Butuan City Airport Development Program (BADP). The budget was already approved by Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas and will be subjected for public bidding next month.

Some of the ground works for the project have already started.

“The expansion and upgrading of BADP was materialized because of the growing passengers and cargo-handling operations,” said RDC Chairperson Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas.

Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Benigno S. Aquino III for his concern in attending to the BADP program. (Mike U. Crismundo)

Butuan City to host 21st Mindanao Business Conference

BUTUAN CITY, July 11 (PIA) -- This city is hosting the annual Mindanao Business Conference, which will run from August 2 to 4 at the Almont Hotel's Inland Resort.

Now in its 21st year of staging, the “MinBizCon” is the main multisectoral platform for fostering competitiveness and accelerating growth in the region and for showcasing investment destinations, particularly in its host city and surrounding provinces.

The Mindanao Business Conference is organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Butuan Chamber of Commerce, with support from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through its Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program.

The MinBizCon is also supported by local governments of Butuan City and Agusan del Norte province, DTI, Department of Tourism, Department of Agriculture and other partners.

“We’re looking forward to hosting this event and drawing attention to opportunities here,” said City Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr., who cited several ongoing business developments, including the construction of a mall and a 150-room hotel by a nationwide chain, as well as a golf course.

“This is a good time for public-private investment. We’re finalizing BOT schemes for upgrading the ports in Nasipit and Masao, and have worked with the DENR, other government agencies and the local private sector to open up upwards of ten thousand hectares of land for development,” Amante said.

Regional Director Brielgo Pagaran of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said that in addition to its tourism and mining industries, the Caraga Region around Butuan City has strong competitive advantages in agriculture.

“Among the newer agri-businesses, we have a herbal processing plant for the export market that uses local raw materials, and ventures in sago flour and nipa sap sugar production, to name just a few,” Pagaran said.

Amante and Pagaran pointed out that Caraga has significant hydropower potential. One plenary at the MinBizCon will highlight current public-private initiatives in the energy sector in Caraga, with partners from Japan and China.

“The Asiga and Taguibo rivers have a 23-megawatt and 8-megawatt capacity, respectively,” said Amante.

Another MinBizCon session will focus on improved economic integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, through the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), which includes Mindanao and Palawan.

The MinBizCon is also an opportunity different stakeholders to speak on the region’s most pressing economic policy concerns. The highlight of the conference is the presentation of the annual Mindanao Business Policy Agenda to the Office of the President of the Philippines.

The formulation of policy recommendations contained in the agenda was initiated through broad-based regional consultations held earlier this year by PCCI in the cities of Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro and General Santos, in collaboration with MinDA and USAID/GEM.

At a series of roundtables held in Manila in early July, Cabinet officials and private sector representatives met to fine-tune these recommendations aimed at improving key business sectors and to draft appropriate government responses.

The MinBizCon is expected to draw more than 300 participants, including senior business leaders, members of chambers of commerce, government policymakers, investors and foreign trading partners.

Butuan City, which now has five weekly round-trip commercial flights to Manila and three to Cebu, has become known in recent years as a Mindanao convention destination, with accommodations for more than 2,800 guests.

Conference participants will be brought on a tour of the city’s main attractions, which include the Butuan National Museum housing ancient Asian artifacts and the Balangay Shrine. They will also have a chance to visit the ongoing archaeological excavation of another centuries-old balangay boat used in Southeast Asian trade routes. (MinBizCon/GEM/PIA-Caraga)

Guys, I am not aware we have a TRAVELLER'S INN here in the city. How come we've missed this one? or recent lang ni?

If it's not of the construction beside it (or is that their extension?), I wouldn't have known the existence of TRAVELLER'S INN.

But anyways, this is a nice addition to the Lodgings & Inns in the city.

for me ampayon is no longer part of bxu, it's like another municipality. layo na man gud, hehehe.

its because of Butuan's big land area....Ampayon has an advantage over Libertad IMO because it straddles the transections of highways like maharlika highway from Surigao...and davao....just like the barangay in puerto in CDO....straddling the higways from CDO to Butuan and Bukidnon

Nag dry run na ang McDo crew ganina, sila ray nagkaon kaon hehehe ^^ Also, the 5th batch of supplies have arrived but this time, it's placed in a smaller container van.

Naa pod McDonald's Desserts nga takeout/outdoor nga counter/station (which I initially thought as a guard house). Hapit na ang opening, mga finishing touches nalang sila. Plastado naman ang mga chairs ug decorated na ang interiors.

the mcdo mgt is wise....it chooses the term "downtown" not centro because the later changes.....history tells Pinamanculan, Banza, Agao (not in order) became Butuan's centros once upon a time.....with the rapid economic growth, it is highly possible that today's centro will no longer be the city's center in the next 5 years and so on

The official name is McDonalds Downtown. Di na ta mag-buot2x no matter how we'd like to call it, hehehe. That was confirmed by somebody who's either the franchisee or the contractor, i forgot the name of the person basta ni-comment siya sa FB page correcting the name "Centro" to "downtown".:)

^^Budget Set For Airport Development

(Mike U. Crismundo)

i hope this results to influx of more inventors and upgrading of transpo/social infrastructures....Butuan City to host 21st Mindanao Business Conference

Where's the equipment?

Anyway, I think the end of the pile driving stage/phase would fall on the last quarter of this year, thus, they have more or less than a year to construct the mall building.

Nasa kabilang side ang pile driver & backhoes Franz. I just focused my cam on the area (Uraya side) where the new piles are stacked.

hats off with this netpal ^^

the mcdo mgt is wise....it chooses the term "downtown" not centro because the later changes.....history tells Pinamanculan, Banza, Agao (not in order) became Butuan's centros once upon a time.....with the rapid economic growth, it is highly possible that today's centro will no longer be the city's center in the next 5 years and so on

BOB-bXu
July 15th, 2012, 10:20 AM
and to keep that lead permanent....in its commitment for eco and green initiatives.....LGU of Butuan shall roll out soon an initial first batch of 1,000 Solar Lamps which will illuminate initially the distant barangays :)

wow....butuan pioneers again in implementing state of the arts traffic facilities......we lead in LED....i hope other LGUs in Caraga will also implement the same

Oh my goodness, how many more piles do they need for the foundation of a 5 storey Rob Mall?
It has been 5 months already since they started pile driving.

::

Robinson Place Butuan's foundation uses an entirely deep piling of pre stressed concrete poles technique.....like this sample building wherein its entire foot print rests on a mat of piles driven deep into the ground

There used to be a 3-storey wooden building standing here (built in the late 60's) owned by the late Tranquilino Calo, ex-Mayor of Carmen, Agusan del Norte. I wonder if the family stills owns the property. The empty lot beside it once stood another 3-storey wooden structure (rebuilt in the 70's) used to be owned by Roberto Calo Jaen who has since sold the property years ago.

It's about time yaoy new building in that area, ang pinaka patsada diha is Rudy Tiu bldg no. 1, built more or less 15 years ago!
