Ako Sir Regj.. :) Yes, It's true. The exact name is "Kolehiyo de Liga ng mga Barangay". I think they are offering two degree programs for now. One is Real Estate Management. I'm not familiar with the other one. The last I heard, the construction of the dormitory is ongoing. Will take pictures once I'll have the chance.

Isn't this the Butuan-China Friendship Park-cum-museum project? Will they still build the Balanghai Shrine and Chinese Monument inside the rotunda? If I remember right, the perspective for this Rotunda and Shrine was posted in this thread many months ago.

I'm not sure sir hah, pero I think ang walay bayad are those under the scholarship program of the barangay captains lang. I heard, each barangay captain of our city has at most 5 scholars attending in this school. Ang problema lang the scholars don't undergo exams, so naa gihapon politics ani nahitabo upon admission. I hope this won't affect the goal of this project which is to produce quality graduates.

Yes, layu jud siya, but soon enough they will surely come up with means to solve this problem especially that naay mga abusado nga drivers diha. Maybe a school bus would be enough. Bisan from crossing tiniwisan lang.

Outreach Program Aids Butuan Folk

BUTUAN CITY – At least 2,054 residents here benefited from the “Programang Pangkatawhan, Gasa Pasasalamat” (Program for the People, Gift of Thanks), a program of the city’s Legislative Body, and supported by various line agencies of the government, private sector groups, and non-government organizations (NGOs).

This week, the program provided medical services, including eye, dental, and blood pressure check-ups, blood tests, including legal services, and free haircut among others.

For the past five years, the program already served thousands of residents here, especially the poor, said City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. and Vice Mayor Lawrence Fortun.

The outreach program also benefited public school pupils, and high school students for their school needs.

“This humanitarian project is a continuing program of the members of the Legislative and the city government of Butuan,” added Fortun.

The program is also fully supported by the Butuan-Agusan del Norte Football Association, and the Philippine Football Federation.

It was learned that the association conducted a football clinic dubbed “Kasibulan Football Grassroots Festival” where 3,000 children coming from the city’s villages recently received football training in Barangay Maguinda here.

In another development, the city government here expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the success of the 10th National Vegetable Congress that was held here recently, where farmers were introduced to the latest technology of agriculture, in an effort to improve their farm production.

The recently concluded convention with the theme “Strengthen and Sustain Safe and Quality Vegetable Production for Market Competitiveness Amidst Climate Change” also provided ideas to the country’s farming leaders to enhance the already introduced organic farming method.

No less than Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala gave several inspirational ideas on farming.

Yesterday, as planned for a long time, we were finally able to go high above Papa P's Malalag Coffee Plantation in Bonbon by way of hiking since we don't have a 4x4 or 4WD pickup. The hill was very steep, in fact, I had the fear of falling every minute and I get excruciating pain every step I take. As we were ascending, I began to thirst and the experience was gruesome yet the picturesque view of Butuan bay and Butuan's skyline was starting to come up.

Upon reaching the top, the view of the third biggest city in Mindanao was tremendous! From afar, I saw a scarlet Mitsubishi Strada parked just ahead of a cabin and a group of men. My friend approached a certain guard to identify himself as close friend of Papa P's son Jan2x, but the guard referred us to another man. The man sitting on the wooden bench: it was Papa P. Now I have an idea where does this man relax during weekends. He was hospitable, and he offered us mountain fruits such as bananas and buko. While taking pictures of the area, I have observed that he has an armed group of bodyguards. I saw one brininging an assault rifle. At around 5pm, his extended family arrived for a family picnic. I'm glad they offered us a drink to quench our thirst.

One of Papa P's aides approached us and told us that Papa P will be running for Vice Mayor in 2013. He also told us about Pascual's plan to develop the area also in the year 2013 by concreting the access roads, putting up an adventure park with zipline rides, a hotel and convention center with amenities such as a swimming pool. As the sun went down, we were starting to see lights from the urban jungle but unfortunately we went downhill at 6pm because we don't have a vehicle and there are no lights along the way.

sooner,...... travelers could travel to the capital of Surigao Sur without passing Bad-as,etc.....this new road will cut travel time by half (from 4-5 hours to 2-3 hours) ^^

this will lower cost in transporting products to and fro Butuan and Surigao Sur and provides convenience to travelers and businessmen^^

^^Butuan to Tandag via Pianing! Super like^^. Pero I hope the NPAs and bandits will keep their hands off the travellers/viajedor and farmers transporting goods . When finished, i think the Pianing - San Miguel span will be a "no man's land" from 5pm to 6am. Currently, Ka Maria Malaya of the NPA considers that part of the region her turf.

Butuan City to Tandag City
Butuan City to Bayugan/Tagum/Davao City
Butuan City to Malaybalay/Valencia City

:) Yes, It's true. The exact name is "Kolehiyo de Liga ng mga Barangay". I think they are offering two degree programs for now. One is Real Estate Management. I'm not familiar with the other one. The last I heard, the construction of the dormitory is ongoing. Will take pictures once I'll have the chance.

Log ban costing jobs -- business

BUTUAN -- More than a hundred thousand people have lost their jobs a year and half since Executive Order No. 23, which slapped a logging ban covering natural forests, took effect, a business leader said here recently.

"EO 23 favors illegal loggers," Leonardo D. Angeles, executive director of the Philippine Wood Producers Association, argued at the sidelines of the 21st Mindanao Business Conference held here last week.

Mr. Angeles claimed that out of the estimated 650,000 workers employed in wood-based establishments before the order was issued, 130,000 had lost their jobs since then.

Joseph Omar O. Andaya, president of the Butuan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc., said about 4,000 families in the Caraga Region alone have been adversely affected by restrictions imposed on the wood industry.

Marlo D. Mendoza, assistant secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, acknowledged the plight of those who have lost their jobs and hinted of a system being worked out that may lead to the lifting of the ban. "We will soon create a timber-tracking system to make sure that all logs are legally cut," he said in an interview.

Pabor ako dito.. they should LIFT THE BAN but make STRICT RULES on ILLEGAL CUTS.. wag nila idamay yung mga owners ng mga logs lalo na kung dumaan sa tamang proseso ang pagputol through the advice of DENR.. dapat may mga return service din.. kung puputol ka, eh mag tanim ka ng bago.. dapat each cut tree must plant 10 new seedlings of trees..

picture, picture, picture:lol:

It is that tall mountain that is part of the Diwata Mountain Ranges that stretches from Surigao Norte-Agusan Norte boundary in the north down to the Surigao Sur-Agusan Sur boundary in the south

it is a natural boundary that separates the 2 Surigao and 2 Agusan.

its height provide a natural barrier that fends off fierce Pacific storms....a natural shield for typhoons

together with the Mayapay Range in the west.....Diwata Mountain range borders the vast Upper and Lower Agusan Valley...

we must help preserve Mt. Hilong Hilong...

I agree with you Bob-bxu. We should do our part bisan gamay. Many people in the city just take this mountain for granted. They don't even know its name and not ever aware of it's importance to our local climate, water supply, agriculture and biodiversity. Rare plant species were discovered in this mountain not so long ago. I was even commissioned by DENR-13 in 1999 to undertake an inventory of the snake/reptile (identity, density, etc.) population of the place. Kalooy sa Dios...Wala na dayon. Gi tukob ang funding sa bakunawa.:ohno::ohno::ohno:

netpal this is awesome. I like this summary of endeavors geared towards loving back nature. When a community begins to renew it's bond with mother earth in any way, the rewards that the earth gives back is amazing and priceless. What's really good about all these heightened awareness is that we may enjoy all the trekking, boating, cleaning-ups, planting and other outdoor activities TODAY, but who will really benefit are those who will come after us. I'm sure netpal, the next generation will be thankful.

..... we have a myriad of mountaineering groups/academic institutions/scientific societies who also call for the preservation of Mt. Mayapay and it's environs.....

..... BDC, FSUU, ACI, LGU-Butuan created/paraded colorful dragon boats for example to increase people's awareness/active participation to protect the mighty Agusan River....they are just the few first entrants...... but i am optimistic more institutions and even individuals will also join the fantastic 4 in the not so distant future.....

^^

....We also have the Mt. Hilong Hilong Protectors

...we also have an administration who focus on Clean ground Zero Waste program

....we also have belgian's enfinity to create an environmental friendly solar farm (greener future indeed)

This is good! I just hope City Hall knows how to maintain these expensive panels. A common misconception is that solar energy is an "install-and-forget" affair. I has no moving parts, silent, renewable, but hey it's exposed to the elements and rugby boys it's bound to konk out later or soon. Are those made in China? Then the sooner it fails.

Policy agenda for Mindanao’s development

Manila, Philippines – A POLICY agenda seeking to strengthen Mindanao’s agriculture, energy, mining, tourism, transport, and small and medium enterprises, and address issues on business and investments in the region was presented to President Benigno S. Aquino III at the 21st Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizCon) in Butuan City on August 2-4, 2012. It was part of the overall recommendations of the Philippine Business Conference which was held this year.

The policy agenda was the result of year-long region-wide consultations in Mindanao, a collaboration of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), and United States Agency for International Development, through its Growth with Equity in Mindanao. It called for key and strategic interventions to propel the region’s socio-economic growth.

Among them, a comprehensive energy plan to address the power situation and ensure energy security in Mindanao, an environment that will sustain the growth of mining and ensure responsible minerals development, access to agricultural credit facilities, maximizing coconut production, more export markets for bananas, computerization and promotion of organic fertilizer; bigger port with adequate facilities for transportation and logistics, educational programs to enhance the competitiveness of Mindanao’s workforce in meeting global demand; a National Intermodal Transportation Master plan to lay out the location of major and minor air and sea ports, and implementation of a Tourism Master Plan for Mindanao.

The 21st MinBizCom, with the theme “Invest in Mindanao: Towards a More Inclusive, Progressive, and Greener Future” brought together local government units in Caraga region as well as the Butuan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, business chambers in Mindanao and PCCI leaders from Manila, the Aquino Administration’s economic team, the chairpersons of Regional Councils in Mindanao, and officials of MinDA. Foreign investors spoke on business opportunities in power generation, agriculture, tourism, and environment.

We greet the Officials of the Philippine Government, headed by President Benigno S. Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by its Chairman Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. and President Atty. Miguel B. Varela, and the Mindanao Development Authority, led by Chairperson Luwalhati R. Antonino, on the holding of the 21st Mindanao Business Conference in Butuan City. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Mindanao biz group urged to ‘give back’ for the environment

BUTUAN CITY, Aug 13 (PIA) -- Delegates to the recently-concluded largest annual gathering of business leaders from across Mindanao were urged to take active stance in helping save the island-region’s environment from further degradation.

At the closing of the 21st Mindanao Business Conference held here recently, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chair Secretary Luwalhati Antonino sought the active participation of the business sector in setting industry standards for green technology.

Antonino also asked Mindanao's key business players to sustain efforts for environmental initiatives through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, during her speech at the concluding day of the conference,

“Mindanao is host to eight of the major river basins in the country,” said Antonino, adding that major industries in Mindanao rely on these bodies of water for commercial and other purposes.

She said that Mindanao’s environment is now facing serious challenges over decades of wanton logging, unregulated mining activities, illegal fishing practices, and unsustainable manufacturing activities by extractive industries.

“Damage brought on Mindanao’s rich natural environment range from moderate to severe, some of which are irreparable,” said Antonino, citing data from the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan (Mindanao 2020), Mindanao’s long-term peace and development roadmap formulated by MinDA in partnership with key line government agencies, private sector, and civil society groups across the island-region.

Furthermore, Antonino said that Mindanao suffers from rotating brownouts owing to the critical condition of watersheds in Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon where the Agus and Pulangi hydro power plants are located.

With only 23% forest cover left as of 2003, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) disclosed earlier that Mindanao has already lost two thirds of its total forest cover over the years.

This problem has long been neglected, according to Antonino, pushing MinDA to put together the MindaNOW Nurturing Our Waters (MindaNOW) Program that seeks to integrate and harmonize a ridge-to-reef approach in managing and developing the island-region’s watersheds and river basins.

“The MindaNOW Program provides platforms for public-private convergence and this is where multi-national companies and local business players can come in,” said Antonino.

Antonino added that MindaNOW stakeholders all over Mindanao have started to plant trees in support to the National Greening Program of President Benigno S. Aquino III being led by DENR.

The program aims to plant 1.5-billion trees covering about 1.5-million hectares nationwide by 2016.

“Here in Mindanao we don’t just plant the trees; we make sure they grow,” she said, citing tree-growing and adoption of watershed or mangrove areas as some of the activities that the Mindanao business sector can support.

Antonino said that the environment is everybody’s concern, calling also local government units (LGUs) and civil society organizations to get involved.

“There’s a need for shared responsibility and accountability to protect and rehabilitate Mindanao’s heavily degraded environment. We need to do something now before it’s too late,” she said.

In 2011, approximately forty-one percent (41%) of Mindanao’s land area was devoted to agriculture and one-third or close to thirty-five percent (35%) of its labor force is employed in agro-industry, fishery, and forestry sectors in 2010.

The island-region contributes more than one-third to the national food requirements, producing many of the country’s top export commodities such as coconut, banana, pineapple, tuna, and other marine, aquaculture, and inland fish products.

Among the island-region’s top export destinations are the United States, Netherlands, Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore.

USAid exec urges Mindanao to improve ports’ efficiency

BUTUAN CITY—A US aid agency urged government and business leaders to improve efficiency in the ports of Mindanao, making a pitch for “greater competition” and facilitating access to credit.

Reed J. Aeschliman, acting mission director of the US Agency for International Development (USAid) Philippines, said that “inefficiencies [in the ports] contribute to the high cost of shipping, with negative implications for competitiveness and growth.”

Aeschliman spoke before the August 2-5 Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon) 2012 held here. He said that the “efficiency of Philippine ports” was one of the “key economic issues that policy-makers and business chambers working together can help champion.”

He said the country has almost doubled its port capacities in recent years “but several ports are underutilized.” He cited the port of Zamboanga City, which he described as having an “impressive” container yard “yet its products are largely still exported to neighboring Malaysia through Manila.”

“Mindanao’s ports should serve as economic drivers, linking this region to the international trade system via maritime transport,” he said.

Minbizcon 2012 opened old woes that hamper the development of Mindanao, despite being thrust in 1994 as the Philippine link to the sub-Asean regional cooperation called Brunei Darusallam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga).

One of the problems emphasized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry anew was the high shipping costs that discourage Metro Manila traders from tapping the agriculture products of Mindanao, preferring to import them from neighboring Asian countries, which is cheaper.

Aeschliman noted, though, that the “rapid expansion of your Roll On, Roll Off ports has provided an efficient stimulus.”

“Still the productivity and quality of your ports remain an issue for government and business to address,” he said, suggesting discussions to be done on “what incentives do private cargo handlers have to invest in equipment and improve productivity.”

He said the country should encourage competition and promised that his country’s assistance would be aligned “to focus on reforms that improve the business environment and competitiveness of the Philippines, including the creation of an investment climate that attracts investors, both foreign and domestic.”

“Competition confers benefits to the ports and shipping sector as well as other sectors, and it is through competition that the Philippines will join the ranks of high-performing emerging economies,” he said, adding that the country “is on its way to becoming a future economic tiger, with credit ratings up and investor confidence surging.”

On the contrary, we are viewed to be the safest in Asia and one of the most stable economies in the world. We have a low trade exposure to both the US and Europe and low budget deficit.

At times like this, it would be better if we remain to be cautiously optimistic. True enough, we are still far behind Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore - which by the way have been enjoying high levels of growth for the past two decades - however, we shouldn't discount the fact that we are moving towards the right direction.

Hopefully though, the dirtiness of politics this coming elections won't rear its ugly head. Only when we select the right people will this momentous growth continue. P-Noy can't live the "daang matuwid" alone. He has to be accompanied by righteous people at the local government level.

Pinoy companies are doing well in the local Stock Market labi na gyud ang mga Multinational Companies (MNCs) notably in the mining and real estate industries.

Fastest growing lang in SEA but it doesn't translate into economic stability :-( Layo ra gihapon ta sa thailand, malaysia and singapore.

in Asia man cguro ang nakabotang... pero we're catching up together w/ Malaysia and thailand..

Codification of Butuan’s ordinances underway; TWG created

BUTUAN CITY, Aug. 14 (PIA) -- The Sangguniang Panlungsod has created a technical working group (TWG) that will craft the codification of existing ordinances through SP Resolution No. 500-2012 authored by Vice Mayor Lawrence “Law” Fortun in the regular session held recently.

The TWG is intended mainly for the review, revision, supplementation and consolidation of existing ordinances into the Code of General Ordinances of Butuan City.

The nine-man TWG is directed to put together a draft of the said Code, which will be reviewed by the Codification Committee through a public consultation and then subjected to the final approval of the Sanggunian. Once approved, a comprehensive, convenient, and updated code of general ordinances will be easily accessible to the people of Butuan.

The public is now empowered to have access and information on all existing ordinances of this city.

Once completed, this will put the Butuan SP at the forefront as one of the few local legislatures that have adopted codified ordinances.

Fortun said this will also complete the SP as a total local legislature as mandated in the local government code which he has done only in his first term of office as vice mayor. The codification process will be completed within the year.

New Caraga police director says drive vs illegal logging, mining a priority

BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/14 August) – The newly appointed police regional director for Caraga said the campaign against illegal logging and mining are among his top priorities.

Chief Superintendent Carmelo E. Valmoria made the statement during the turnover of command ceremony at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez in Barangay Libertad, Butuan City Monday morning.

“We are not the lead agency on this matter but we will look into it that we would be there to provide support when needed. We have a comprehensive approach when it comes to apprehensions since several stakeholders are involved in the campaign, like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local government units,” he said.

In the command conference that followed after the ceremony, Valmoria summoned his unit commanders to assess what needed to be done including a possible revamp and stepping up security measures.

He stressed he would not tolerate wrongdoings by his subordinates.

“We are the people’s police, and they are our masters, that we have to provide them quality service and ensure protection from all kinds of dangers.

We will continue as mandated to enforce the law to prevent and control crimes to maintain peace and order to ensure public safety and provide security with the active support of the community, our local officials and stake holders,” he said.

But Valmoria refused to comment on whether the relief of his predecessor, Chief Superintendent Reynaldo Rafal, was due to issues related to illegal logging.

He said it would be unfair to comment on the issue since he was just new in his position.

Butuan hogged the headlines two months ago after the seizure of thousands of illegal timber reportedly coming from Agusan del Sur by the local government unit.

The incident led to the sacking of several DENR officials in the regional office and in Agusan del Sur.

FYI Dr. Mahathir was instrumental in the transformation of malaysia from a backwater tin mining malayan country to one of the most progressive nation in the world today

lawyers ( as the usual political leader Pinoys usually put to power) - tend to argue a lot....or love to talk a lot....or twist a lot...they make a fine law makers though BUT not as good as Docs... :)

Engineers....like Docs....tend to be more precise and objective by basing mostly on measurable tangible, evidenced based data and numbers and calculations....but lacks the critical decision-action making docs usually do in almost in a day to day basis (as life and death-survival for their patients). Docs usually go for the cause....and not just treat the symptoms

Economists....hmmmm.....we just had a Georgetown University grad of an economist like Gloria Arroyo....but sad to say her being an economist works well inside the classroom as an academician. But not so well in real time actual micro economics. On the ground economists though can be a good leader.

Butuan holds dog sport training
By Erwin Mascariñas | Monday| August 13, 2012 |

BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/13 August) — A Thailand-based IPO dog sport program trainer conducted a specialized sport training program at the La Vesa Kennels in Barangay Ampayon on August 9 and 10, focusing on developing and evaluating potential capability in obedience and protection for working dogs.
The IPO which stands for Internationale Prüfungs-Ordnung in German means International auditing rules or International Exam Rules for dog protection sports. IPO is a derived word from Schutzhund, which originated in Germany in the 1800’s, referring to German police dog or K9 units.

Originally a native of Cebu, Richard Bermejo, now a full time dog trainer at the Siam Crown Kennel in Bangkok, Thailand was invited during the two day activity to share his knowledge on the working dog sports.

“I started back in August 2007 in Thailand and even with my knowledge and background I would still consider myself a student since I would still love to learn more on dog training. The things that I’ve shared to the participants would be useful in creating better bond better dog owners and their pets,” said Bermejo.
Bermejo, a certified IPO and Royal Dutch Police Dog Trainer or Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (KNPV) shared during the first day the obedience training then tackled on the second day protection and tracking.
Titus Vesagas of La Vesa Kennels. Lead organizer, pointed out the difference of the activity from all the other dog events.

“We bring this kind of activity here in Butuan to open up to dog owners that there is more to just dog shows. We have other activities that would enrich our dog’s traits and potentials. The IPO sog sport program has been around for a while but this would be the first time it is brought here in Butuan,” said Vesagas.

Vesagas who is also a dog breeder, said the program would be a good tool to assess the dogs and maintain breed standards.
“Here we set the bar. This training program is not for all dogs. Working dogs are of any breed, even mixes, but the most common breeds are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Boxers, Rottweiler’s, Dobermans, Cane Corso, Giant Schnauzers, Bouvier des Flandres, Dutch Shepherd Dogs, Beaucerons, American Bulldogs, Black Russian Terriers, Airedale Terriers, Australian Cattle Dogs,” he said.

Kung makit-an nino ang uban locations sa hiring sa Watsons aside from BXU, naay mga sumpay like example SAVEMORE, SM, etc. ang BXU kay wala so most probably this will be standalone. ^^:cheers:Dili kaha ni located tapad sa may Rosarios atbang DV building? Or mag rent ni sila sa Samping Palmera? And I see, the Hiring is URGENT as if they wanted to open the store before year end.

SM is slowly penetrating the BXU market. Dili sila pinakalit kundi anam anam so dapat mag watch out ang Rob ug Gmall kay mangamang ra ni sila.
