Agusan Norte named finalist in 2009 Philippine Web Awards
By Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (February 10) -- The Provincial Government of Agusan del Norte was named one of the three finalists of the Philippine Web Awards (PWA) for this year.

In an email sent to Agusan del Norte provincial government, the PWA is cordially inviting the local officials to the awarding ceremonies where the winner will be finally revealed. The event will be held at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, 4th floor Podium RCBC Plaza in Makati City on February 27, 2009 at 7:00 in the evening.

The competition is composed of three elimination rounds evaluating the best website for each category. From the original seven entries in the past elimination rounds, three made it to the finals in the E-LGUs-Province category: The Official Website of the Provincial Government of Bataan, Provincial Government of Agusan del Norte – Official Website, and the Province of Cebu Website.

In a written statement sent to PIA, Agusan del Norte Governor Erlpe John Amante said that the scores from the previous rounds will be disregarded and scoring will start from scratch. "The PWA Committee has selected new panel of judges from the industry to evaluate the nominated site", he said.

Moreover, Gov. Amante said the official PWA Finalists' Badge is now posted on their website at www.agusandelnorte.gov.ph to promote the site in the People's Choice Awards and for the judges' identification purposes.

The judges will rate the entries based on four criteria: Content, Design, Usability and Functionality. The awards organizers, after close consultations with Web Designers, Developers and Internet professionals, affirm that these four criteria are important in judging Web site excellence. Depending on the category, various weights for each criterion will be applied.

A flashy site has no real value if it has no content to offer. And by content, PWA don't mean the texts or articles alone; it can be images, multimedia elements, or even a collection of tools, data or links. In considering content, judges are asked to determine if the content matches the goals and nature of the Web site. They are also tasked to look at the tone of writing, the frequency of updates, and the depth of information. Content should be informative, engaging, persuasive, useful and/or entertaining depending on the nature of the site. The articles should be well written, and with correct grammar and spelling.

Design refers to appearance. It includes the use of graphical elements, such as images, color, white space and typography. Visual design is important in grabbing visitors' attention but it should not be at the expense of overall user experience. A flashy site may take too long to load fully that it defeats its purpose. The design can be restrained, even minimalist, and still be considered good if the nature of the site calls for it. Like with other media, consistency and appropriateness play a part in determining what good Web design is.

Usability means proper organization, layout and navigation. As in building a house, a great site's blueprint sets the foundation. A well thought out information architecture – how content is organized and linked – enhances user experience, making it easy for visitors to navigate the site and find the needed information quickly and easily. A well-designed, uncluttered page layout leads users to the information they need.

Functionality enhances how a visitor uses the site. It includes optimized code, working scripts, and use of the interactivity. It means fast loading of pages, live links, working forms, relevant search results, and seamless transaction processing. It also pertains to the proper use of plug-ins and multi-media. Interactive features engage the user to participate, which can be in the form of forums, chat rooms, polls, games, and quizzes. Outstanding functionality is relevant and adds value; it is necessary that everything in the site works.

Aside from the judges' ratings, testing and voting on-line are part of the critera. Casting of votes can be made at www.philippinewebawards.com or by texting WEBBYSVOTE55 and send to 2955 for Smart and Talk and Text. For Globe and Touch Mobile subscribers however, just send to 2973.

Other categories featured this year are Arts and Portfolio; Blogs; Celebrities and Personalities; Community and Portal; Corporate; E-Commerce; E-Government; E-LGUs-City, Province and Municipality; E-services; Entertainment; Lifestyle and Leisure; Magazines and Zines; Organizations; Personal; Schools; and SMEs.

The Philippine Web Awards (PWA) is an award-giving body that annually recognizes the best Filipino-created web sites and honors the individuals and teams behind them.

PWA continues to attract participants here and abroad and gain support from main industry players. Over the years, the PWA remains true to its mission of honoring outstanding Filipino talent in the field of web design and development.

The finalists and winners not only garner appreciation from their peers, but also career growth and bigger business opportunities. (PIA)

Another Mindanao-wide Business and Investment Confab slated in Butuan ^^

Invest gab outside Davao region pushed
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 [ sunstar.com.ph ]

WITH the successful conduct of the first Mindanao Investment Conference (Min-iCon), which was held in Davao City late last year, regional investment forums in the different regions in Mindanao will also be pushed through to further develop investments and opportunities.

In an interview at the Villa Margarita Hotel, Ednar Dayanghirang, former executive director of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), project manager of the Sustainable Responsible Investments (SRI) in Mindanao -- a special project of the MinBC -- said he will be going around Mindanao to arrange the event with the leaders of the different regions in the island.

"Butuan has already committed, but the conference will be conducted in the same area by the second quarter. We are also targeting Zamboanga Sibugay," Dayanghirang said, adding that he still has to meet the leaders in Zamboanga Sibugay to have some arrangements regarding the event.

Dayanghirang said the conduct of the regional investment forums is MinBC's undertaking under its SRI economic stream. It is a strategy to create more opportunities in the different industries and can generate livelihood among the people.

He said earlier that each region will be the one to identify the products it wants to promote.

Last year, MinBC, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Davao, highlighted and featured the opportunities and prospects for Pangasius, for the rubber industry, honeybee production, banana industry, coffee, and others.

Dayanghirang said if there will be enough time to implement the same event in the whole Mindanao Region, MinBC wishes to have at least one investment forum to be held in each region in Mindanao. (JGRS)

Naming a business establishment is a critically important task for entrepreneurs. It's a first impression to consumers, it identifies your business, and it can envelop the entire environment and style of your business.

Obviously, these qualities in a name can drive customers' opinions toward any business sky high, or your business name can drive them away before they even pass through the doors of your place

So I agree to change the name of this Hotel and Restaurant.

correct....but NOT generally true, especially among traditrional Chinese businesmen who may have found their fortune on the initial/first business they are once into.

Goat 2Geder was once Doongan's and Langihan's favorite kambingan....it used to be located along Masao Port road in Lower Doongan...Its karenderya style dishes makes it a click to motorists and the local croud within its vicinity.

The success founded by the owner ~ a Chinese businesman from Dipolog City made him venture further into restaurant and Hotel business....still carrying the lucky name Goat 2Geder....though whimsical the name may sound...but its the name that brought fortune to the business..

Take for instance Shoemart of Henry Sy...once found his initial fortune from repairing old shoes and selling them to his clients....soon enough he was buying supplies from Marikina and further expanded his shoe retail....from this...who would have thought that the name Shoemart ....(a name quickly leads one to think to a shoe store)......is now a conglomerate of businesses ranging from malls to banks to real estate.....(all starting from a humble shoe) :)

Butuan Lion Dance

Red Lion enters the Red Apple to bring fortune
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm152/freida201/IMG_7410.jpg

LION DANCE TROUPE TAKES TO BUTUAN STREETS
Fil-Chinese Chamber Newsletter January 2009

After its very impressive performance at the Timber City Academy on New Year’s Eve, the Chamber decided to undertake a fundraising activity for its many charitable projects. So a Circular Letter was sent out to members and stores about the availability of the Lion Dance Troupe to perform at their stores to bring luck and good fortune to their businesses.
The first establishment that we visited on New Year’s Day was the RALAV, Inc., managed by our good friend, Leonardo Yu. We arrived early and soon we were ready to perform. All employees stopped work and lined up on the sidewalks of San Jose St. which was temporarily closed. The two lions took up positions on opposite sides and as the drum, the gong and the cymbals sounded, they pranced and leapt. All the time, they opened their mouths and winked their eyes. The ladies were amused and took pictures from several angles.
Next we went to the Life Auto Supply, and as we cleared the sidewalk, they asked us to wait a while for Mama Concepcion to come to the store to have a vantage view. The second lion positioned itself at the door of Dysekco Enterprises and as the instruments sounded they danced and converged at the foot of the Grand Old Lady. Again, people were attracted and gathered around. They marveled at the agility and coordination of the dancers which months of practice had improved.
Then from one store to the next, the lions performed along P. Burgos St. until it was time to go to Gaisano Mall. Ms Gina Go was waiting for us. She had the ‘ang pao’ ready. As the two lions pranced, the customers gathered around, amused at the sight and sound they witnessed and heard. As we performed, invitations were texted to us to request that we include their stores.

The whole troupe was very game even as they sweated, refreshed by cold mineral water and fortified by energy drinks. Ms Lydia Condino was our finance officer while Engr. Jun Bonpin was our coordinator. Mr. Ronald Ucab, our trainor, joined us on his motorcycle. We decided to let one team rest while the other performed to conserve their energy; for it was really a spirited and physically draining undertaking, particularly for the headman and tailman. Even the drummer, just beating the drum required effort which resulted in his palms getting bruised. The cure proposed was the gloves donated by Robert Ty of Butuan Champion Hardware.

We visited the Butuan Express Hard-ware, Pan de Cogon and Pagcor upon their request, the latter of which provided us with refreshments, then we returned to the downtown area. We could see that after some more performances, the teams were tired and famished so we retired to the Mansion Chikaan where the boys relished the Chow fan and lomi fare. After an hour and a half, they were raring to continue the gruelling routine. They danced until it was getting dark, punctuated only with refreshing or energy drinks and merienda

The next day, we started at the Cardinal Farm Supply of Engr. Bonpin, then Ronwood Construction of TCA president Peter C. Dy. A few more stores at Langihan area enjoyed the exhibition before we proceeded to City Hall, at the request of OIC Mayor Dino Claudio Sanchez. The atrium was a perfect arena for the Lions. As the team performed, a P100 bill floated down from the third floor followed by many P20 bills and P10, P5 and P1 coins. It was almost literally raining money which prodded the lions to exert more effort. By then OIC Mayor Dino and Councillor Benjie Calo were seated on a bench for a clearer view. Pictures were taken of the city officials with the Lion team, as other people also requested photo ops with the other lion.

The coins and bills were collected and handed over to us. We left for our next destination as we were pressed for time. Next stop – Razon’s. This was the second stop requested thru the RCBC and we were glad to oblige. After the performance, the personnel including the chef, asked to be photographed with the team, and gave us several lunch boxes full of ‘palabok’. We brought them along with us and along the way, the young men devoured them. They surely enjoyed the snacks.

At one stopover, we arrived just in time before Terence Yu, the big boss at Golden Key (Bustan) left to fetch his children. He instructed the helpers to position his Grandma where she could see the performance. Then we hastily went to the Mister Donut outlet where Jay Barroquillo was also waiting for us. It was nearing noon and after a few more performances, we stopped for lunch. This time, Mr. Ucab choose Roldan’s Buffet. Since it was buffet type and ‘eat all you can’ mode, this suited our young men who had their fill. And while some were resting, the others helped to sort our the coins which surprisingly totaled the amount of P1,180.00. Not bad for a public place, and to think some say we are in crisis? This will serve as additional ‘ang pao’ for the nine troupers.

another National Sports Meet slated na fud sa BXU^^

NSBC sa Butuan City
Updated January 26, 2009 12:00 AM

Timan-i nga dili sayon ang pag-gradwar kun dili kamo maningkamot.

Augusto W. Go, ang presidente sa UC --- another one is coming 'Torney.

In 2004 we held our IEcEP Annual National convention and ICT congress in CDO. By then CDO becomes one of the BPO hub in Mindanao next to Davao. Hopefully, Butuan will follow the steps of CDO and Dvo after this congress in BXU.

Woman Who Discovered Huge Petroleum Deposits in Butuan Passed Away
June 15, 2008 by Ben

BUTUAN CITY- The woman who saw the first burst of black, muddy flammable liquid believed to be huge petroleum deposits underneath the family’s more than a hectare lot at Barangay Pagatpatan here in Butuan City passed away at the age of seventy nine last May 27.
Survived with husband Ireneo now 80 years old and eight children now fully grown up and have their own families, Antonia Bolongaita who was then 53 years old when she saw the first bursting of black, muddy flammable liquid at her backyard never saw development of that discovery.
Worst, the area is now left unattended with tall grasses growing everywhere as the aging couple could no longer physically maintained in cutting cogon grasses and clean the swampy portion near mouth of Agusan River and Butuan Bay.
Early morning on Holy Thursday in 1982, surviving husband now 80 years old Ireneo Bolongaita recalled to this writer it was his wife, Antonia who woke him up after she noticed the first burst of black, muddy flammable liquid in the water well they dug for days as they search for water supply in the area.
Until now, the spewing natural gas was providing family members with free liquefied petroleum gas for years that came naturally flowing from the well.
In the lot where the water well is located, the free flowing methane gas is also providing free gasul for cooking to other Bolongaita family member whose is just situated few meters away.
“This is the only consolation we’ve got” eighty years old Ireneo Bolongaita fondly as Manong Ireneo said when this writer visited him this morning after interviewing him in April 24, 2006.
The methane gas is a colorless, odorless gas and its discovery was in relation to petroleum oil found underneath earth’s crust.
The Canadian engineers in 1985 confided to the couple that the crude oil discovery is only part of the huge fossil fuel deposit found in Mindanao as it also admitted the presence of “Deuterium Gas” at the Philippine Deep found in Surigao.
Foreign engineers and geologists who visited the area and made studies confided to them that the *petroleum* found on their land is only part of a huge fossil fuel deposit in *Mindanao* that extends as far south as the Cotabato provinces.
Bolonggaita recounted how Canadian *petroleum* engineers illustrated in 1985 the extent of fuel *deposits* underneath their land, adding that the Canadian engineering team said they believe the *Mindanao* oil deposit is the source of all the *petroleum* *deposits* in the world.
The Canadians shared with the Bolonggaitas their theory that the *Mindanao* fossil fuel deposit is the mother lode from which other oil producing countries’ crude oil emanates.
Bolonggaita said the Canadian engineers likened the *Mindanao* *petroleum* deposit to a river that serves as the water source of its tributaries.
However, Bolonggaita admitted he did not understand the scientific explanations for this given by the Canadian engineers.
“They were amazed with the discovery and even chuckled when they found out (using) their instruments the extent of oil *deposits* underneath my land,” Ireneo said.
“But when local officials and even some national officials came and talked to these Canadians, we never saw nor heard of (the Canadians) again,” Ireneo added.
Ireneo said the Canadians left them calling cards but added that the Canadians’ enthusiasm over the *petroleum* died a natural death over the 26 years since the engineers’ visit.
The Bolonggaitas also lost the team’s calling cards bearing the logo of the Canadian National Oil Company.
He said many foreigners, including some Japanese and Americans, had arrived on their land ahead of the Canadians claiming to be *petroleum* engineers and geologists but, like the Canadians, they never returned after speaking with government officials.
These foreign engineers and geologists flocked to the Bolonggaita residence after their house was flooded in 1982 “with black, muddy liquid.”
That substance was *petroleum* that had percolated up through the swampy ground and with it came free-flowing methane gas “that emits from the water well we dug,” Ireneo said.
He recalled that their property was featured on the television show “Travel Time” and said their land has become a regular stop for field trips by students from different parts of *Mindanao* .
Bolongaita said foreign petroleum engineers who visited them have pinched in instrument that reach 2,000 feet deep underneath his lot and found the huge petroleum deposits that will reached to as wide as 500 kilometers square wide that will reached to as far as Liguasan Marsh in Cotabato.
True enough of what the foreign engineers were telling Bolongaita years had past, in April 2005, huge deposits of oil and natural gas have been identified in at least three areas in Mindanao , according to the Department of Energy (DOE).
The Energy Department said these big potential sites in Mindanao include the Davao to Agusan basin particularly in Butuan City now being explored by the mainland Chinese company Seng Hong Exploration Corporation.
The Cotabato basin which covers over one million hectares in Liguasan marsh; and the area straddling Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
But for unknown reasons the project never reached the Bolongaita premises.

the report was just too trivial...

that was NOT petrol deposit that was discovered...but TAR deposits from underground...a form of black sludgy material from decomposed plants covered by soil... the report too was sensationalized, it lost merit even for further scientific study

maybe this is the reason bob why the further exploration did not progress. but i think the community deserves to know the truth. one thing is sure though, at least a number of families in the the community are benefiting from this "discovery" even until today

yup...there was a series of geomorphological studies that were done after the discovery.....it was found out that Pagatpatan used to be part of Butuan Bay...in other words it was just once part of the sea....when centuries of siltation from Agusan River elevated the marshes to become what is now known as Pagatpatan, Masao, Suatan and Lumbocan areas...the geomorphological study was also able to conclude that Pinamangculan was before an island separated from Bancasi and the ancient shoreline was more upland in Bonbon...
