I don't think the writer wrote negatively against the mayor's health. I scan the article and its fine. In fairness to the writer, I think he was just writing his experiences as he witnessed. There's no point we should take it negatively. Our views here should be balanced. Good and bad should be discussed. If there is too much for either, its no longer facts. Its propaganda. regjeex February 22nd, 2009, 07:21 AM Maajo pa ang Cabadbaran naa nay statue ang BXU kaya kelan? sabagay meron naman balangay marker pero dapat unta statue of Mayor Calo-father of BXU or si Magellan or kaya ang malking statue of Princess Golden Tara... Mindanao Bee February 22nd, 2009, 07:21 AM Asa ni dapit na area @mindanaobee? is it in the Plaza? nice one there.... But those articles for me IMO is that something behind political issues from the Administration. AFAIK, I am not pro administration nor opposition as long as our city will be progressive it's all GOOD for me. Why we should make any issues on health and the economy? why we shouldnt make issues on progress? If in case our mayor has health problem then, we have to move on... we're not the only one facing the econimic crisis even the most powerful country in the world...:cheers: Not unless the mayor has something issues on having an affair of such and such kay murag lahi ra. Let's put everything in its proper perspective shall we  BOB-bXu February 22nd, 2009, 08:24 AM a few food reviews:cheers: Dining in Butuan Let us now jump to my favorite topic: food. Filipinos love to eat. That is a fact. When visiting Butuan, expect to be offered food everytime you step inside a Butuanon's house. The best dining experience would be at your host's house. You are lucky if your host knows how to cook. If not, a hired cook may prepare the usual visitor's fare. In our home, visiting relatives are usually offered steamed prawns and crabs, grilled fish, kinilaw and lechon with leche flan or cake for dessert. If available, they may be lucky enough to sample local delicacies such as palagsing, tumpi, buntaa and inisab. If you prefer dining out, here are a few restaurants to try: Manay Maling's, Almont Inland Resort - This is Butuan's default go-to place for tourists. Nothing beats eating with a view of the pool and man-made waterfall. It offers mainly Filipino dishes. Daily lunch buffet costs P200+/person. Don't forget to try the halo-halo. Almont City Cafe - Located at the heart of the city, City Cafe is a good date place. It has fewer selections compared to its sister resto, Manay Maling's, but everything on the menu is a must try. A pianist plays on scheduled hours. Embassy Cafe & Restaurant - If you want major artery constriction, head to Embassy. Its bestsellers include kare-kare, filet mignon and crispy pata. For the health conscious, try the equally popular steamed lapu-lapu. Luciana Restaurant - If you don't mind climbing 2 flights of stairs, then Luciana it is. My personal favorites are the chicken pillows, buttered chicken and pansit canton. Enjoy the hefty servings! Narra Restaurant - Which Butuanon hasn't eaten at Narra? This is probably the oldest restaurant in the city. Narra has been relocated to two locations - one at Ochoa Ave. and another along J. C. Aquino Ave. in Libertad. Try their garlic chicken, lumpia shanghai and toasted bihon to taste what Butuanons have been eating at Narra all these years. Margie's Kitchen - Margie's is the newest kid on the block and, presently, the most popular, specially among the younger ones. The place is packed each dinnertime. Margie's is more known for its desserts, but they also have regular meals on the menu. My favorite? Pandan-wrapped chicken. For merienda, my top choice would be the Black Olive and Tuyo Pasta. True Brew - As the name suggests, True Brew is more known for its coffee and gourmet sandwiches. On top of the crop are Clubhouse Sandwich, Pastrami Melt and Cuban Grill. They also have Mexican Tacos. For thirst-quenchers, try the Mango Fizz or Soursop Spritz. Minty Passion - Probably the most overlooked on the list, Minty Passion is located right beside True Brew. The Taco Salad and Chicken Cordon Bleu are worth a try. Aling Cora's - Chicken barbecue at its best! A well-traveled Manila-based friend once commented, "This is the best chicken barbecue I have ever tasted!" Other must-trys: kinilaw and crispy crablets. Did I say very affordable prices? Weegol's - Before there was Aling Cora's, there was Weegol's. After their top rival opened, Weegol's has been losing steam. Loyal fans go back for their buko halo and buko pie. You can expect the stream of government employees from nearby City Hall at lunchtime. Mering's Barbecue - Butuan's best kept secret. It takes a real Butuanon foodie to locate this place. It is the cheapest and most delicious dining option in the city. Hint: Drive to the police station and follow the smell and the smoke. Good news to all barbecue lovers: Mering's will open a not-so-secret branch near Gaisano Mall very soon! CRISMUNDO BUTUAN CITY – The Regional 13 office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH 13) in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga Region) is set to open initial 1,424 job openings today, it was learned yesterday. The job fair will be opened at the DPWH regional office here at 8 a.m. today and those applicants that will pass the criteria will be deployed in Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands, it was also learned. The DPWH 13 needs civil engineers, foremen, laboratory technicians, heavy equipment operators, masons, steelmen, welders, drivers, auto electricians, carpenters, surveyors and construction workers, it was gathered. In the initial recruitment, at least 898 job openings are available for Agusan del Norte; 341 in Butuan City; 47 in Surigao del Sur and 138 in Dinagat Islands. The next batch of job openings will be announced by the DPWH regional office soon. The DPWH is fast-tracking this month the bidding of P60 billion worth of projects set for implementation during the first half of this year to accommodate more job openings, it was also learned. To give more strength to the Arroyo administration’s job and employment generation program, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was inked between the DPWH, National Constructors Association of the Philippines (NACAP), Philippine Contractors Association (PCA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE). The objective of the MoA is to provide skilled and non-skilled workers a chance to secure positions with the contractors, given the need for increased manpower to accomplish the government-awarded contracts. Workers hired during initial job fair today will work with various construction firms for the duration of their contracts, it was also learned. Hired workers and personnel will receive at least the minimum wage in their respective areas of designation or possibly more depending on the firms that they will fork for, it was further learned. The DPWH is set to hire more than 500,000 skilled and non-skilled workers nationwide this year, it was also learned. Source: Manila Bulletin , Feb. 23 '09 power647 February 23rd, 2009, 12:38 AM Aboitiz Power to bid for plants in Agusan, Compostela Valley Aboitiz Power Corp. will bid for a 100-megawatt power barge in Mindanao, a top ranking official of the company said last week. In an interview, Aboitiz Power Senior Vice-President for Power Generation Group Luis Miguel O. Aboitiz said they were eyeing the power barge being auctioned off by the government in Agusan del Norte. Power Barge 117 located in the village of Sta. Ana, Nasipit in Agusan del Norte was first auctioned off in October, but the bidding was declared a failure after only one bidder submitted the required documents. The second round of bidding for the power asset is on April 15. Aboitiz Power has also expressed an interest in the 100-megawatt Power Barge 118 in the village of San Roque, Maco in Compostela Valley. The facility was supposed to be auctioned off on Feb. 25 but the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) declared the bidding a failure since only Aboitiz Power had shown up for the pre-bid conference, PSALM Spokesman Conrad S. Tolentino said. Mr. Aboitiz noted that although Mindanao is not an attractive site for a power facility since it has the lowest power rate among the three islands, the facilities are in good condition. "Our interest in [the power barges] are not connected . Mindanao is not an attractive market because power prices there are the lowest in the country," Mr. Aboitiz said in a text message. "The plants are in good condition. Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) is a first class operator," he added. The power barges are operated and maintained by BWSC, an international turnkey contractor and operator of medium and large diesel engine-based power systems. BWSC is also involved in projects for selected renewable and waste-to-energy technologies. The company handles plant design and rehabilitation, operation, maintenance and financing. Two investors, including Aboitiz Power, have expressed interest in the Agusan del Norte power barge. In an earlier statement, the PSALM said potential bidders were conducting due diligence on the power asset, which started on Feb. 3 and will end on March 27. The sale of the power barges in Mindanao will help pay for state-owned National Power Corp.’s debts, which at the end of 2008 stood at $6 billion, excluding $2 billion in interest. — Ava Kashima K. The Off Shore Patrol During the Philippine Commonwealth under President Manuel L Quezon, the Filipino Navy existed as adjunct to the United States Armed Forces. Filipinos served the US military service. With the creation of a separate Philippine armed force, a naval organization was formed as a seagoing arm of the Philippine Army. On 09 February 1939, the Off Shore Patrol (OSP) was organized with headquarters located at Muelle Del Codo, Port Area, and Manila. It was headed by 1LT JOSE V ANDRADA, a graduate of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Initially, the OSP was assigned with three US Navy Motor Torpedo Boats and christened as follows: 1. Luzon (Q-111) 83-footer 2. Abra (Q-112) - 65-footer 3. Agusan (Q-113) - 65-footer http://www.netc-navy.edu.ph/images/history9.jpg On 09 January 1941, the OSP Training School was organized with CAPT MARCELO S CASTELO OSP PA as its first Commandant. It offered courses in torpedoes, depth charges, communications, seamanship, engineering and operations of gasoline engines in consonance with the characteristics and capabilities of the Q-Boats. During World War II, however, Japanese planes bombed the OSP Headquarters on 23 December 1941. The Base Commander burned the base before Japanese troops entered Manila. The Philippine Naval Patrol The Off Shore Patrol was reactivated on 01 October 1945, just after World War II. The OSP Training School was transferred to Cavite Naval Shipyard and renamed OSP Training Center; The OSP was further expanded and became a major unit of the Philippine Armed Forces. On 04 October 1947, the OSP was renamed Philippine Naval Patrol (PNP) during the time of President Manuel Roxas. On 05 January 1951, the PNP was further designated as the Philippine Navy. __________________ BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 05:11 AM http://www.birdingphilippines.com/bird-tours/IMG-5135-copy.jpg http://www.agusanmarshfocas.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/scientific-conference-cover1.jpg http://www.wowphilippines.com.ph/images/Explore/province/104.jpg http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/2667309.jpg the author of this scientific study, a Butuanon, Ms Jurgenne Primavera was cited in the article in Time Magazine last year for her work ^^ BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 05:13 AM wow, netPal....you got a huge collection of data there I suppose....keep it up :) netpal February 23rd, 2009, 05:13 AM skylab :) have you tried riding on this ibex? netpal February 23rd, 2009, 05:14 AM wow, netPal....you got a huge collection of data there I suppose....keep it up :) netfind bob:) BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 05:16 AM traditional music using indigenous wind pipe instruments in the ongoing CALAGAN Fest 2009 http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q179/lalai91/DSCF1823.jpg BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 05:21 AM from click link for Amazing Butuan (http://amazingbutuan.blogspot.com/2009/02/1st-calagan-festival.html) Caraga Celebrates 1st Calagan Festival Headed by the Department of Tourism, the people of Caraga was amazed to see different Festivals in the provinces as it celebrates the 1st Calagan Festival on February 18-23. As I perused the market's offerings thoughts like 'Mmmm, red snapper, chuck it on the grill' and, 'Ooooh, octopus, Italian tomato stew with spinach,' danced through my head. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/26/giant_squid_7_6.jpg Who doesn't love grilled squid? The problem, if you're preparing this at home, is that there's such a fine line between 'done' and 'rubber' that the risk of turning squid into something with a texture akin to a Superball is exceedingly high. With these babies, sheer volume lifts the getting-it-just-right pressure http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/26/giant_squid_5.jpg After severing (but not discarding) head and tentacles our host stuffed the skin-on bodies with a mixture of chopped onions and tomatoes and laid it all over low coals. We had a long wait for lunch but the wonderfully tender squid rings sporting a good bit of smoky char on the outside were well worth it. Bigger squid means, of course, more tentacles and Dave, an afficianado, especially appreciated the bounty.. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/26/giant_squid_3_2.jpg netpal February 23rd, 2009, 06:01 AM http://www.rfcemine.com/images/residential2.jpg netpal February 23rd, 2009, 06:03 AM http://www.rfcemine.com/images/RFC13.jpg BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 06:03 AM my gulay..look at that Golden Tara....seems its in a state of Levitation !!!! ^^ net PAl..post those nice renderings of mansions at the Butuan Architectural Thread...:) netpal February 23rd, 2009, 06:04 AM http://www.rfcemine.com/images/Samper.jpg netpal February 23rd, 2009, 06:06 AM my gulay..look at that Golden Tara....seems its in a state of Levitation !!!! ^^ net PAl..post those nice renderings of mansions at the Butuan Architectural Thread...:) oks bob:) Ibex February 23rd, 2009, 06:08 AM http://www.rfcemine.com/images/Samper.jpg Nako kaila samper sa bayugan BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 06:12 AM rising souvenir market for a booming tourism industry http://deuts.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/the-butuan-trip.jpg regjeex February 23rd, 2009, 06:17 AM ah tua man gani ahong dakong nawong sa samahan thread... maajo ng ibutang nalang aron tibway...:hahaha: my offer is anonymous...dili ipanghanyag.... it is just a friendly offer.:cheers: something to offer? hmmmmmm.... unsa kaha na reg  a ok ra ayaw lang e frame nang imo avatar  regjeex February 23rd, 2009, 06:18 AM yeah they are.... Yes i meet her kadali lang, last Christmas Party nila kay nag small party man pod mi sa among frienship house then Don2x was there with his wife and kids. Here's something gathered from De La Salle University. __________________ BOB-bXu February 23rd, 2009, 06:23 AM http://www.tagaytayeconoinn.com/pandepugon/images/sub/sub_pandepugon_r2_c1.jpg Mega Manila ~ Baguio ~ Cebu ~ Butuan ~ CDO ~ Davao regjeex February 23rd, 2009, 06:26 AM Speaking of conventions, we badly needed this astrodome... dili kasya sa mga hotel convention center pag regional events like this... Nipa (Nypa fruticans) - and other palm varieties, including coconut and aren - are tapped to produce suka (vinegar), a Filipino kitchen staple, mildly alcoholic tuba, and more alcoholic laksoy. Elsewhere in Southeast Asia this same sap is boiled to make sugar. Such may also have been the case in the Philippines before the Spanish introduced cane sugar cultivation. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n6787.jpg You'll often hear it said that coconut, aren, and nipa vinegar (and gula Melaka) are made from the sap of palm trees. That isn't quite the case - what's tapped are not the trunks of these trees but the stalks of the trees' flowers. Among the three varieties the nipa palm is unusual in that its stalk is cut and the sap harvested only after the flower has bloomed. Nipa palms grow in muddy areas near brackish water. Unlike coconut palms, they're low-to-the-ground; their trunks actually grow horizontally beneath the surface of the earth, with branches jutting up in clumps. This makes harvesting the tuba (sap) relatively easy as the tapper doesn't have to scale a ladder to ready the flower stalk and collect sap. Above, a resident of Barangay Banza in Mindanao's Butuan City prepares a flower stalk for tapping, by bending it down and away from the trunk of the palm, rubbing it with mud, and massaging it. The idea is to loosen the fibers inside the stalk enough to get the sap flowing without pulverizing them; this he'll do a couple times a day for a couple of weeks. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7606.jpg To determine whether or not the stalk is ready to be cut, he hacks away a bit of the flower to get at one of the white crispy nuggets hiding inside each 'petal'. These 'nuts', by the way, are also harvested and eaten as is or candied to make a nata de coco-like treat sometimes called 'palm seeds' and sold in jars of sugar syrup. They show up in halo-halo, and, in Vietnam, in a similar ice treat called che. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7617.jpg The stalk is ready for cutting when the flower's nuts are sweet (they also taste a little coconuty). The flower is taken off about six inches from where it attaches to the stalk and, once again, mud is rubbed along its length to draw the sap out (this is the last time the stalk will be mud-rubbed). http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/nipa_5_2.jpg If the tapper has accurately gauged the readiness of the stalk then sap should start flowing right away. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7596.jpg It's captured in a bamboo tube that's attached to the end of the stalk. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7554.jpg The tuba is collected twice a day. Its sweet stickiness gums up the end of the stalk, so after each collection the tapper slices off about a half centimter or so to keep the sap flowing. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7572.jpg One stalk will produce tuba for about thirty days, by which time it will have been sliced, bit by bit, almost to the trunk. Tuba begins to ferment almost as soon as it drops into the bamboo tube (sugar makers employ a variety of means to hinder fermentation). After it's collected it's added to a big wooden barrel. If left for three days it becomes bahal, the lightly sour, ever-so-slightly alcoholic beyond-tuba-but-not-quite-vinegar that Butuan City Market's kinilaw master Leo uses to dress his fresh fish. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7663.jpg After thirty days the tuba becomes suka. Our host in Butuan City adds extra flavor to his suka in the form of fresh chilies, onion, garlic, ginger, and lots of black pepper. This elixir we greedily spooned over everything from rice to grilled fish to fresh seaweed. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/vinegar_mix.jpg Or, fermented tuba can be made into laksoy, a clear alcoholic beverage. This still, set by the river and shaded by nipa thatch (yet another use for the palm - roofing and walling), is fueled by wood and turns twenty gallons of tuba into about one gallon of laksoy. The stills here in Banza are made of lawaan wood or stainless steel. Wood makes for a much more fragrant laksoy, we're told. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7632_2.jpg Inside the still, the tuba is heated to boiling. The steam that rises condenses on the still's concave metal cap and then drips through a tube, out and into a waiting jug. http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/355n7635.jpg The first round results in a lightly cloudy beverage. Laksoy isn't crystal clear - and doesn't earn the designation 'first-class' - until it's been distilled a second time. We found first-class laksoy to be more palatable than expected, with a wee bit of a floral scent - definately not rot-gut 'white lightning'. Some locals let raisins and/or ripe jackfruit macerate in the laksoy before cracking the bottle. If we had a jug of laksoy we'd treat it as we sometimes do rum: add mango, pineapple, lime rind, and a bit of vanilla bean and stow it away to flavor for thirty days. In the barangay stills are a communal asset, supporting on average twenty families each. One lapad (flat, 'pocket-sized' 375 ml bottle) of laksoy fetches 10 pesos (about 25 US cents). It may not be the tree of life, but the nipa palm is integral to the livelihood of this barangay, at least. The captain tells us that seventy percent of Banza's population is involved in the production of tuba, suka, and/or laksoy, as well as the harvesting of nipa 'nuts'. regjeex February 23rd, 2009, 10:03 AM Usuable jud kaayo ang nipa... gud thing we have a lot of nipa.... netpal February 23rd, 2009, 10:23 AM http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_3.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_1.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_2.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_7.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_9.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_12.jpg http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/12/18/bantilan_lechon_18.jpg netpal February 23rd, 2009, 10:44 AM quoted from eatingasia.typepad.com: http://eatingasia.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/02/19/sansrival_2.jpg That nugget of wisdom popped into my head a couple of weeks ago in Butuan City, as I sat patting my mid-section after all but licking the plate on which had sat, just a minute ago, a slice of sans rival. Granted, it had been a week of non-stop eating (details to come). But it was really the sans rival that led me to the edge of the cliff and pushed me over. Our host, you see, lives next to his sister-in-law Margie's bakery. Nearly every meal closed with a parade, literally from the bakery's door to his, of wickedly delicious cakes, cookies, pastries. Sans rival, 'without rival' - a Philippine confection that demonstrates the usefulness of hyperbole. Made of layers of meringue sandwiching chopped nuts and buttercream, and frosted with more buttercream, sans rival is deceptively (and dangerously) light and airy. Margie's version incorporates lots of toasted cashews (I've also had sans rival with pistachios) and buttercream that's little more than butter and plain sugar - so buttery, in fact, that it melts if the cake is left out too long. It's as much nuts as meringue and shows a brilliant balance of saltiness to sweet. Our companion, who took to eating leftovers for breakfast, wished for more buttercream between the layers. My hips thank god for this version's 'leanness', if that's the way to describe a cake sporting an inch of dairy fat frosting. Margie is an inspired baker. Everything her workshop turns out is stupendous. But it was the sans rival that lured me back for seconds. Every single meal.
