Net25 myAccess Caravan
Butuan connects with NET 25 myAccess
http://www.net-25.com/images/caravan/butuan.jpg
Welcome to the Timber City of the South! NET 25 MyAccess Caravan was showcased in one of the busiest business districts of Mindanao – Butuan. Nestled between mountains, a valley and a river, the city was a perfect location for the caravan.
If the past MyAccess Caravans were successful, it was the same in Butuan, as our kababayans welcomed the Globe and NET 25 MyAccess teams warmly.
Part of the ongoing livelihood projects of Globe, sub-distribution and retailing were also a huge hit among the Butuanons. Becoming a Sub-D or a Retailer is one of the easiest ways to earn an extra income, that was the reason why most Butuanons signed up! Many of our kababayans have already testified and shared their inspiring stories ever since they have become Autoload Max sub-dealers and retailers.
After the Livelihood Seminar, Day 2 started with a different twist: a motorcade that went around the entire Butuan downtown area – from the provincial capitol up to the different barangays in the area, after which, the motorcade proceeded to Luciana Hall where the event was held.
Sub-D’s and retailers loaded up the new would-be MyAccess subscribers. Registration was abuzz with all the activations going on. But more importantly, it was not only the activation of the SIM cards that was important in this caravan. What was crucial was that our kababayans understood the benefits of using their new MyAccess SIM.
Globe Telecoms International Service Head, Mr. Nikko Acosta explained the unique value-added services of the My Access Sim. These made the Butuanons ready to have access to greater opportunities such as jobs, the marketplace, downloads and rewards.
“May pera talaga, may pera sa pagreretail ng load,” shares Melanie Lozano, a housewife. Michelle Sinunuco, a teacher at a local tribal school adds “Malakas po ang signal ng Globe, di katulad ng ibang networks, gusto ko po magbenta ng load para extra income.”
To add to the excitement, the caravan had the much-awaited giveaways portion: a brand new cellular phone from Globe for the lucky winner! “Maraming salamat po sa NET 25 MyAccess SIM, nanalo po ako ng isang cellphone,” exclaims Ben Farajili happily.
New phones, free load, exciting gift packs, and FREE MyAccess SIM cards! Livelihood opportunity for our kababayans. All these and more from Globe and the NET 25 MyAccess Caravan team made Butuan a city of greater opportunity.

msbunnybxu February 26th, 2009, 06:44 AM hmm i dont see what`s the big fuss with singapore being a clean place when in fact even a small town in the U.S. or in Europe for that matter is clean.:):):)
We were just exhanging thoughts of possible "get away" destinations ng mga pinoy outside PI na malapit lang. As a traveller yourself, I'm sure you take note also of your observations about a certain place. A clean and orderly sorrounding is such a big fuss since you don't get the chance to see it everyday. Hindi naman kasali sa usapan ang US and Europe :)
Yes it is very expensive to travel. But if one can afford it ( like regreex,phmatrix and bob ) why not? :):banana:
regjeex February 26th, 2009, 06:57 AM Well said. Nice to see those countries like singapore na super linis... na ni isang kusing wala tayo sa PInas dahil sa sobrang burara ng ibang tao. I like olongapo dahil malinis din doon. But it's amazing like singapore na even throwing of cig buts is bawal even spitting i think. But for me, I wanna travel to Israel... maybe because dili ko kaayo ganahan sa mga beaches etc... i like more on historical places. Barato ra daw ang food and accomodation sa Israel.. naa ko kauban gikan sila sa Israel...they spent their vacation there for 1 month... 1000 dollars lang daw nagasto nila w/in a month. diba... Ill try to get my a*s and work kay ako jud nang adtuon nga lugar. :cheers:

Field Museum of Natural History Gem Room, Chicago

http://www.chicagotraveler.com/museum-photos/full-view-distance.jpg
HISTORY
The Field Museum was incorporated in the State of Illinois on September 16, 1893 as the Columbian Museum of Chicago with its purpose the "accumulation and dissemination of knowledge, and the preservation and exhibition of objects illustrating art, archaeology, science and history." In 1905, the Museum's name was changed to Field Museum of Natural History to honor the Museum's first major benefactor, Marshall Field, and to better reflect its focus on the natural sciences. In 1921 the Museum moved from its original location in Jackson Park to its present site on Chicago Park District property near downtown where it is part of a lakefront Museum Campus that includes the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. These three institutions are regarded as among the finest of their kind in the world and together attract more visits annually than any comparable site in Chicago.
AN AMAZING VARIETY OF EXHIBITS
See 100,000 year old rocks in one room and $100,000 jewels in the next. Stare down a 40 foot dinosaur one minute and then have a giant bug 40 times your size staring down at you. With ever-changing exhibits that capture every detail, and permanent displays that seem fresher with each visit, the Field Museum will squash all your ideas of a stuffy, old-fashioned museum.
SUE THE DINOSAUR, STILL A COMMANDING PRESENCE!
Just after you pass the colossal Roman pillars guarding the entrance and glide into the grand hallway with its vaulted ceilings…far off in the distance you’ll see the Field Museum’s most noticeable inhabitant. It’s Sue, and standing 13 feet tall and 42 feet long, she’s the largest assembled Tyrannosaurus Rex in existence.
After you’ve finished examining Sue from top to bottom, head upstairs and learn why the discovery of Sue has left scientists searching for answers about Sue’s life 67 million years ago.
TIP: There are volunteers stationed throughout Field Museum waiting to teach you more about Sue and much more. Find a volunteer and ask how Sue ended up at the Field Museum. The story lends itself to be as interesting as the great dinosaur herself.
ROCKS OF AGES
After Sue has taken a small bite out of your day, wander around upstairs through the Earth Sciences exhibit. There you can pour over literally tons of crystals, minerals and meteorites in this massive display of Earth’s beginnings.
PLANTS OF THE WORLD
And then pop in next door at Plants of the World where you will get lost in a jungle of forest life. I bet you won’t be able to guess which plants are real. (Here’s a clue: none of them). But try not to stand around too long in Plants of the World or you’re liable to get stuck in the weeds.
YOU'LL BE DAZZLED
Before you head back to the main floor there are two exhibits you should see. First is the Hall of Jades, which showcases the many shapes and colors of China’s most treasured stone. Then across the way is the Hall of Gems, where you will see over 50 varieties of precious jewels sparkling in all their brilliance.
TIP: Remember to periodically check your watch. There’s a Museum Highlights Tour that runs at 11am and 2pm daily. These free hour-long tours are run by Field Museum volunteers and cover what they consider to be the best spots in the museum. Each tour is as different and entertaining as the guide that leads it.
SEE NATURE WALK and SKIP THE ZOO
For another amazing dose of virtual reality, head straight over to Nature Walk and come face to face with over 500 of the world’s wildest mammals, birds and sea creatures. The environments of these “stuffed animals” have been reproduced so convincingly, at some points I was thankful there was a window separating me from some of these beasts. Nature Walk is mind-boggling in size and scope and should not be missed.
INSIDE ANCIENT EGYPT – A ROYAL EXHIBIT
For your next stop head towards the pyramid and go “Inside Ancient Egypt”. There you can traverse the catacombs once used by Egyptian Kings and Queens and see the many mummies and tombs that have outlasted them. But also take note of how equal time is given to examine the labor-intensive lives of the servants.
UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE
Since you will exit “Inside Ancient Egypt” on the ground floor, go see the Underground Adventure next. If you didn’t buy a ticket to see Underground Adventure, here’s what you’re missing…you’ll miss getting shrunk down to the size of an ant and navigating your way through the dirt encountering creepy critters at every turn. As a junior scientist you will be conducting experiments, identifying many different kinds of species and seeing how they all exist just below your feet. This exhibit has it all; it’s completely hands-on, totally educational and there’s an eerie surprise around every corner. Underground Adventure is definitely worth the extra cost.
EVOLVING PLANET
Four years in the making, this new permanent exhibit highlights 4 billion years of life on earth, emphasizing the basics of evolution. Experience the fascinating story of evolution with nearly 1,300 fossils, as well as animated videos, interactive displays and re-created seascapes and landscapes. It opened to the public on Friday, March 10, 2006. Learn more about Evolving Planet at the Field Museum.
TIP: When you first buy your tickets for Underground Adventure you have to set up a time to stop by (it helps cut down on crowds). Try to schedule your visit for the afternoon. One of the curators told me that’s when the museum is most empty.
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
Along with their impressive array of permanent exhibits, the Field Museum is constantly introducing new temporary exhibits. Here are a few worth seeing:
CURRENT EXHIBITS
Dinosaur Dynasty: Discoveries from China running until April 23, 2006 – See more than a dozen dinosaur skeletons from halfway around the world (Note: there is an extra charge to view this exhibit)
Transforming Tradition: Pottery from Mata Ortiz running until May 31, 2006 --Observe the rebirth of an ancestry of ceramic craftsmen stretching back almost 1000 years.
Pompeii: Stories from an Eruption -- October 22, 2005—March 26, 2006
Witness the devastation that Mt. Vesuvius inflicted on Pompeii and the surrounding cities along the coast of southern Italy.
COMING SOON
KING TUT IS COMING TO THE FIELD MUSEUM!
One of the most anticipated exhibitions to come to Chicago, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, takes an in-depth look at the life and death of the boy-king.
The exhibit runs from May 26 to January 1, 2007, and features more than 130 priceless artifacts discovered in the Valley of the Kings, including riches found in King Tut's tomb and the tombs of other royalty. Enjoy breathtaking treasures like King Tut's golden diadem, his child-sized throne and so much more.
Don't miss this amazing journey inside the era known as the Golden Age of the Pharaohs and the secrets of King Tut, Egypt's most captivating king. Bring the family and stay for the weekend. Tickets are on sale now through the Field Museum. For more information see the Field Museum King Tut web site.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Be on the lookout for these and much more in the coming months and years.
Whether you came to see dinosaurs, bugs or mummies, you will leave the Field Museum more educated and enlightened about every aspect of Earth’s creatures and cultures. Come and see the future of history for yourself.
THE MUST SEE LIST:
These attractions should not be missed on your visit to the Field Museum:
Sue the Dinosaur
Underground Adventure
Nature Walk
Inside Egypt
SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND…
Hey kids…search the museum during your visit to see if you can discover…
Sue’s real skull and then find out why it’s not connected to her body
4 different types of Tools for Feeding that animals use in the What is an Animal? exhibit
Chicago’s sports teams represented as animals in Nature Walk (Blackhawks, Bulls, Bears, Cubs… the White Sox should be on your feet!)
5 minerals that we use everyday in the Earth Sciences exhibit
TIP: DO’s & DON'T’s about admission and parking before you head out:
- DO your homework when it comes to admission. The Field Museum offers Discount Days on selected Mondays and Tuesdays throughout most of the year.
- DON’T visit when the Chicago Bears are playing at Soldier Field; there’s no museum parking available and overall it will be a very crowded day
- DO consider using the new East Entrance parking lot. It’s ideal for Stroller and Handicap accessibility. There aren’t many spots, so arrive early if you want one.
- DON'T forget to check the hours of your parking garage. Some close as early as 5pm.
- DO the math when it comes to public transportation. It costs $3.50 per adult for a round trip bus ticket ($4 with a transfer) or $13 to park all day on the Museum Campus.
- DO try to grab lunch before 11:30am or after 1pm to cut down on crowding.

hala. we were supposed to go to Bohol (either panglao or bohol beach club resort) this may but cancelled itthe last minute and booked for Boracay instead. Ingon man gud sila mingaw daw didto especially pag gabii na. wala daw kaayu entertainment. unlike in Boracay it's always party time day in day out. mas ma enjoy daw ka which is a good thing because my bagets nephews and nieces will be coming along too. Their malls too are just a walking distance while in Bohol mag trike pa ka. oooopps murag discourage na samot si filino...:lol:

hmmm.....that well earned dollars will definitely go a long way here in BXU as long as they are well and wisely spent Reg ^^
what about franchise an already established business here in BXU?
in that way, its not hard to start up because you will be backed by a strong marketing strategy by the parent franchise provider..
a lot of companies have considered BXU as a franchise area...ranging from car repair shops....gasoline stations....water refiling stations....restaurants...to coffee shops
you just have to chose which you feel best according to your capital and interest^^

Reg,
medium end franchise for a Philippine coffee shop let's say Cebu'sCoffee Dream would probably fetch around 5 to 10 Million PHP...
or perhaps to 30+ M for a Figaro..or Bo's
but there are cheaper franchises from companies in Mindanao
Taza Coffee of CDO offers a fee of 300,000 with a royalty of 3% for a term of 5 years
while Davao's Blugre offers a 600,000 fee with an initial investment of 3 M..and 5% royalty of gross sales
and Gensan's Fagioli offers an initial investment requirement of 3.2 M...with a franchise fee of 400,000
one possible drawback though is ..though they seem to offer a much lesser franchise fee requirements...they being Mindanao homegrowns might not put up enough leverage against the well entrenched Butuan coffee shop homegrowns thus will be possibly facing a tough start up competition
there are other franchise providers too like Brother's Burger....Wham Burger....Gery's Grill...

pwede man magform ug corporation mga taga SSC-Bxu pra makaya ang franchise for KFC or Max or unsa man ang wala pa sa Butuan. Bench long before included Butuan in its expansion list pero wala pa nagfranchise. The way Pizza Hut and Penshoppe(2 stores already) are performing in BXU is a sign that our city is now ready for the other popular food chains/retail chains.
Rex dili lagi ka ma-alkanse invest na dayon basi maunhan ka. Mga taga Cebu ug mga taga Manila sige na ug survey sa BXU.

jsl_bxu1206 February 27th, 2009, 04:19 AM I don't think moabot og 30M ang Bo's.
Reg,
medium end franchise for a Philippine coffee shop let's say Cebu'sCoffee Dream would probably fetch around 5 to 10 Million PHP...
or perhaps to 30+ M for a Figaro..or Bo's
but there are cheaper franchises from companies in Mindanao
BOB-bXu February 27th, 2009, 05:05 AM I don't think moabot og 30M ang Bo's.
likely lower if kiosk or stall lang siya Jsl..

hooiissst.....I am not a party person or even a beach person huh? It just so happens that for this summer, we prefer a more "festive" atmosphere in a beachfront setting the reason why we decided on Bora. But next time around naman if we prefer a more relaxed and subdued mood for a change then definitely Bohol will be in our top list.

msbunnybxu February 27th, 2009, 07:57 AM Guys, nagbasa-basa ko sa City Gov. of Butuan 2008 State of the City Address. I came accross this sentence: "We are anticipating upcoming partners in development with the expected coming of Robinsons mall."
Check out SEAPORT INDUSTRIAL TOWN AREAS report.It's the second to the last paragraph.

Patience is a virtue, hehehe.

jsl_bxu1206 February 27th, 2009, 08:45 AM 2008 State of the City Address
"Envisioning, Realizing, Empowering"
We Butuanons inherited a glorious past. At present, we are still striving hard for more development. Soon, we will come full circle, and redeem our place in history, to become the premier city of the future!
Friends,
Today, I am proud to report, that there are wide-scale infrastructure projects, new jobs, new homes, and a new sense of community. We are part of the super region that, we were destined to be.
For us, this is an opportunity to reclaim our place, and revive a glorious history, that long preceded us, as we shape a future, that will long succeed us.
Planned Development
Along our way to development, we needed smart, planned and coordinated growth.
In 2002, with former Mayor Leonides Theresa B. Plaza at the helm of government, our City Land Use Plan was approved.This plan identifies four growth areas, which now serves as our blueprint for development.
As a catalyst for growth, the CLUP spawned a massive boom, in all aspects of development.
My report will present the state of our Downtown, Newtown, Uptown and Seaport-Industrial zones, as well as the state of our countryside.
Downtown
Revitalization and urban renewal is taking shape in our Downtown, comprised of 27 urban barangays, and 4 urbanizing rural areas, clearly and magnificently conceptualized thru Architect Palafox’ urban design.
With careful study, we complemented our development blueprint, with catalysts for growth, by putting up appropriate and massive infrastructure facilities, to launch economic activity.
These include the construction of the state of the art Diosdado Macapagal Bridge, and Bypass-Road, and Magsaysay Viaduct, which took us almost 15 years of lobbying to the National Government, to be realized.
The Diosdado Macapagal Bridge expands the City’s accessibility, and avoids the expected traffic congestion later on.
For more than a hundred years, we lived in constant fear for our lives and properties, brought forth by the flooding of the mighty Agusan River
With the east bank levee, and west bank levee and floodwalls protecting us, the long-suffering of the Butuanons, from the onslaught of huge floods, is hopefully, at an end.
While the levee and floodwalls shield us, from the threat of the Agusan River, we still had to solve the flooding from within the City, which is below sea level.
Our long-sought after solution, is our P1.2 billion Urban Drainage and Masao River Improvement Project, covering T. Calo, Mandacpan, Libertad to Masao areas, which drastically cuts down on street flooding, during heavy rains.
If water overflows on the streets during high tide, this drains out in a matter of minutes after the rain. . .
Our drainage problem was further addressed, through the P 632 million Banza River Dredging and Land Development Project, which helps to drain out water during high tide, or those coming from Davao and other areas.
Incidentally, all structures have been turned over to the City for maintenance. These are sources of attraction in themselves, being unique to Butuan City. At present, you can now take a leisurely boat ride, through the scenic Mandacpan to Masao waterways.
Of course, hand in hand with providing solutions to floods, is our input to improving transportation and accessibility. Starting out with few cemented urban roads, we now have 90 % of our main urban roads concreted. By 2010, we expect to have fully cemented roads in our urban areas.
With urbanization comes a rising population. This has made necessary the implementation of the Butuan City Water Expansion project, which now provides water facilities all throughout our 86 Barangays. So with dependable electricity, which is now 100% available in all barangays.
Travelling along North and South Montilla Boulevard is a pleasant experience with the beautification of our center islands, planted with ornamental plants and trees, placing of decorative pavers in the walkways, and installation of ornamental lamps and lampposts, with balangay boat motif.
We do not just make Butuan a livable City, we also make it beautiful.
As we try to improve our facilities, we enhance our government services. What better way to serve you, than in a modern City Hall Building that makes it convenient to transact business with the government? Coupled with systems improvement and computerization, our people can attest to better and more efficient services.
From these investments totaling more than 6 billion, we saw Montilla Boulevard blossom into a vibrant neighborhood, while our old downtown districts along Marcos Calo, Villanueva, J. Flores, San Jose, and A. D. Curato streets, retained the charm of a busy and friendly hub of economic activity. . .
We witnessed the growth of a new, busy commercial district along J.C. Aquino Avenue.
We observed the increase in low-cost housing units in Villa Kananga and San Vicente, as well as the rise of executive homes for the up and coming middle and higher income classes.
We enjoyed the extensive
* Bayantel
* Cruztelco,
* Philcom
* Smart
* Globe
* Suncellular communication facilities.
We experienced the expansion and improvement of our old educational institutions such as Urios College, now turned Father Saturnino Urios University, Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, Butuan City Colleges and Agusan Colleges.
Our young ones can now choose from among many exemplary preparatory schools, as well as recreation facilities.
Our downtown revitalization makes it still, my friends, the busiest district in our City.
Newtown
The Newtown, located in Baan Km.3, Tiniwisan, Lemon, Antongalon, and Ampayon is dominated by institutional and industrial facilities, and housing development, traversed by landscaped waterways.
Moving the area towards its envisioned destiny, we have exciting ongoing projects that include the 148 million D.O.P Regional Center and the now fully-operational 100 million Butuan Medical Center.
In addition, there is more activity in existing neighborhoods underway, with the proposed conversion of Normisist to the University of Caraga, operation of the industrial plants for oil processing, prawn processing, dressing plants and banana chips factory.
At present, we have Pepsi and Coca-Cola warehouses, that we expect to locate a plant in this area soon.
We see prospects for the Newtown Area improve dramatically, with our dream of building the 12,000 seater City Coliseum, a striking combination of business, entertainment, and gathering space to serve the people of Butuan, in the next 20 years and beyond.
Because of the Coliseum’s strategic presence in the Newtown District, we anticipate a bustling locality,
in that area in near future, especially with the Initial Resettlement Area in Tiniwisan, the Lopez-Habitat and city government subdivisions in Amamaylan, Baan Km. 3, Ampayon, and Taguibo, and the establishment of the FILINVEST Homes, that will serve the high-end clientele.
Uptown
There is an upbeat tempo in our emerging uptown area, which serves as an alternate central business district, combined with leisure facilities and some institutional, commercial, residential and industrial locators.
It is situated in Bancasi, Libertad and Bonbon
With its uphill location, our building of concrete circumferential roads, is seen as the district’s jumpstarting factor for growth, encouraging the flourishing of amenities, that are now sources of anticipation.
Added to which, we can look forward to the 644 million Airport expansion, that will enable us to serve the increasing influx of passengers.
As of now, we have 3 regular daily flights during Tuesday to Thursday, and 4 during Monday, Friday Saturday and Sunday, in the Butuan-Manila route. We also have daily flights to Cebu with a total of 6 flights on Mondays and Fridays. . .
These are all indicators that our progress is unstoppable. For as long as we are your servants, our quest for progress will continue.
Seaport-Industrial Town areas
Seaport-Industrial Town covering Masao, Lumbucan, Ambago and Babag will be a major port area.
To launch its development, PPA has begun implementing the Masao Port Development Program Expansion.
Another strategic plan is to construct through BOT or joint venture arrangement, the Butuan City Major Port, as approved by the President, with cost estimated at P7 billion . . .
Our efforts to bring hallmark progress all across our urban areas have borne fruit. Exciting and rejuvenated new districts have sprung to life and continue to expand.
Last year, we issued 1,800 new permits in construction activity that included residential, commercial, and industrial construction totaling P9.7M in financial input.
New development in retail industry included small neighborhood shops and restaurants as well as new financial buildings.
Throughout the City, homes continue to sell steadily, with new housing developments completed every year.
Institutional advancement remains strong: Urios University is about to complete its Elementary and High School Department in Ambago.
Saint Joseph Institute of Technology is also expanding in Villa Kananga with its more or less, 10,000 seater gymnasium, while our hospitals have also increased in capacity and specialization.
And, there is more.
Soon, we shall see the Riverine Development Project along the banks of the mighty Agusan River for our tourists, and a modern South Super Market in the southern part of the City. . .
[SIZE="6"]We are anticipating upcoming partners in development with the expected coming of the Robinson’s Mall.
This is one of the most exciting and productive times in the history of Butuan. It is proof, of the confidence that all of us have, in the future of our City.
COUNTRYSIDE DEVELOPMENT
To balance the growth in our urban areas, we equipped our barangays with basic facilities to deliver effective governance: Barangay Halls, Health Centers, Day Care Centers and Covered Courts, amounting to P114 Million.
We promised in the last elections, to cement 1-4 kilometers of rural roads, and 1-3 kilometers of urban roads every year.
We delivered on that promise!
Last year, we concreted roads measuring 1 km each, with drainage systems for Brgy. Dumalagan, Pigdaulan and Bonbon.
This year, we will continue with another kilometer for Bonbon and Dumalagan. Concreting of roads for Bobon and Don Francisco will follow this
year . . .
In our urban areas, this year, we cemented roads and provided drainage to
* Hidalgo Village, in Libertad
* Pareja Subdivision, in Bayanihan
* Tamarind Road, in Dagohoy
* Bougainvillea, Blumenttrit and 4th Street in J. P. Rizal
* Rosales corner Montilla Blvd in Langihan
* The Circumferential Road in Ampayon and
* The main road of Emenville Subdivision
We also improved drainage along Pili Drive and Narra Road, 1st Street in Guingona Subdivision, Butuan Resettlement Project in Doongan, and Balangayan Butuan in Pagatpatan.
We will follow on, with concreting of roads in Orchid Street and Gumamela Street, as well as provide pavers and drainage along Bacolod Street where the Balangai Hotel is located.
For food sufficiency, we pushed for irrigation projects. We now have the National Irrigation Administration (NIA)- Lower Agusan Development Project which services approximately 3,000 hectares of agricultural lands. . .
To get our farm products efficiently into the market, we built farm to market roads, some of which were funded by the Department of Agriculture, totaling P36 M.
2007 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
We can see that the past years have been busy for us. 2007 was no different, as we made sure that our communities are safe, have good schools and access to opportunities and a high quality of life.
For Peace and Order
Thus, we wage a constant battle against criminality. Our crime volume is way below that of other similar -sized cities.
Over the past years, we were able to increase police presence, by providing additional vehicles for mobility, and keeping civilian forces to help watch over our communities.
Aside from relocating families living in danger zones, May last year, we opened our Disaster Management Operations Center, the city’s nerve center in a catastrophe.
For economic development
Now it's time to take the next steps forward by ensuring our position as a regional hub of commerce and a tourism destination.
Last year, we launched the Agusan River Eco-Tourism Demonstration Project, as our springboard for a tourism-focused development, which will culminate in the construction of the Butuan Historical Park, to jumpstart development of our riverbank areas into a recreation, livelihood, and tourism area, and to serve as showcase center for products developed through the One Barangay One Product program.
Weaving through the Butuan Waterfront is the river cruise, which will be launched anytime this year.
We have created a positive environment for our private investors through attractive taxation schemes, facilitated business permit processing, and strong promotional strategies.
We will also unveil our 9 historical sites, which will be the focal point for our tourism industry, namely, the Bood Promontory, the Regional Museum, Banza Church Ruins, Rizal Park, Bonbon Shell Midden, Balangay Shrine Museum, Magellan’s Anchorage, Suatan Burial Site . . .
And the Mt. Mayapay Reforestation Project . . .
As the Regional Center, we will take the lead in the regional celebration of the Calagan Festival.
For our livelihood development, we have earmarked P15M for the cooperatives of our 86 barangay. . .
On Social Development
We are also making unprecedented investments in social services.
We have always believed that we should not be squatters in our own land.
That is why, we are engaged in the biggest affordable shelter program ever undertaken by any city in the country, with more than 100 subdivisions catering to over 10,000 families.
With the Balangayan Butuan Shelter Program in Pagatpatan and Mahay, more than a thousand houses have been built, 1,267 families from the riverbanks have been relocated, 3 big partners, the Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, and the Kadiyawan Inc. have put their stakes, financial and social inputs, into the program.
This year, Kadiyawan, Inc., with assistance from the Philippine Congregation of Evangelical Churches, headed by Bishop Ephraim Tendero, is set to build 300 more houses in Mahay New Villages, while Father Saturnino Urios University, through Gawad Kalinga, will be building 24 houses.
While we take care of our families, we give love to our elders. Our Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs, with more or less 15,000 members, and the OSCA Geriacare Center looked after 2,265 OSCA members, who availed last year of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, eye screening, cataract operation, bone and prostate screening, aside from benefiting from their senior citizen cards. . .
Our young are also not left behind as we provide the Lingap Center for our street children and other programs for the differently-abled.
On Gender Equality
Our women also take the forefront, with the launching of the Women and Children Crisis Center to address the concerns of women, especially those who are battered or abused.
On Health
We continue to look after our people’s health needs, extending assistance, through Phil Health Para sa Masa Insurance membership, to almost 10,000 underprivileged families of Butuan.
On Education
We saw schools mushroom all over the City. This is important as schools are the breeding ground of new ideas, new talent and new jobs.
In response, we continue to provide scholarships to poor but deserving students through our city and barangay scholarship programs. As of 2007, we already have 293 scholar graduates.. .
But while I am convinced of the need to emphasize education and encourage our youth to take college education, we must advance vocational education, and place more emphasis on job training programs.
Thus, our Butuan City Manpower Training Center provides skills training to 14 batches, totaling 556 graduates.
Meanwhile, the Public Employment Service Office or PESO conducts job marketing as well as provides financial assistance thru our fly now pay later program to overseas work applicants. With these efforts, we have helped 3,517 Butuanons find jobs locally and abroad.
Last year alone, 29 Butuanons were deployed to Hongkong, Singapore, Dubai, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy and the United States.
Our goal is education for all, and that includes the differently –abled children, street children and children of the ethnic groups. For them, we have the award-winning TAWAG, Kangyatan Hong Kabataan and the Madrasah classes.
To provide a holistic development, we revived our city sports program and launched the Pabibo sa Barangay which has become an effective venue for developing the love of sports among young individuals, right at the grassroots level.
On the Environment
Another area affecting quality of life in Butuan relates to waste disposal. I recently passed an executive order for the establishment this year of garbage pick-up points and mandatory construction of compost pits by every household. . .
Serving our Customers
Keeping pace with all these developments, is our enhanced customer service, creating an open, responsive and accessible government, that serves all of our constituents, regardless of their economic status.
In our barangay visitations we bring city services out to where people live. At the same time, we are actively implementing ordinances, crafted by our Sangguniang Panlungsod , ensuring our orderly development.
Moving forward
As we move onward, we will be implementing more projects that will further enhance our services.
Our next step in effective governance, is to construct the SP building to complement our City Hall.
Just last month, we have approved an additional P3,128,463.39 for our energization program to provide electricity to the most remote sitios in 9 barangays, namely:
Camayahan Barangay Site;
Purok 8, Mayapay:
Purok Damayan, Lumbocan;
Purok 2 and 4, Mandamo;
Purok 5, Maibu,
Sto Nino; and
Purok 4, Sumilihon.
Also, we shall have a reassessment of our Real Property Taxation to reflect the real value of our land as a result of development.
Next, we will move on to privatization of Garbage Collection, the Butuan Medical Center, the Motorpool and the City Economic Enterprise which include the Public Market, Public Cemetery and Slaughterhouse, because I believe that the private sector has the capability to carry out a successful privatized service delivery campaign.
We look forward to a robust tourism industry that will bring more income to barangays, to our private investors, and to the City.
Finally, we have targeted that by 2010, our city income shall have reached the 1 billion mark.
A legacy for people
Friends,
Centuries before, we carved a niche in our country’s history. We are fortunate to have inherited such a rich legacy. But, we are also responsible for living up to that heritage.
As Butuan City continues to grow, we must look back to the past, as we head on to a great future. Along the way, we must always make sure that everyone feels welcome and safe; is given opportunity; partakes in our economic benefits, and benefits from our social services.
In short, each and every Butuanon enjoys quality of life.
It is a tremendous accomplishment, and a gift to generations to come.
With God’s blessings and guiding hand as our constant support and anchor, we know that we are following the right path.
Fellow Butuanons, I appeal to you, to further strengthen our patriotism. Be proud to be a Butuanon, because 1,688 years ago, there was no Philippines, but there was Butuan.
Thank you and madiyaw nga hapon kanato nga tanan.

BOB-bXu February 27th, 2009, 08:46 AM Ows? Really? That's good to hear! ^^
I think its because of the Agricultural nature of Butuan main stream economy....
when crisis strikes....its usuallly the things other than food that is cut...
people start witholding buying clothes (garments)...they stop buying furniture... and they start slowing down on buying appliances (electronics industry)....they cancel building houses for the time being (cement and steel).....BUT they never CUT back on FOOD first...
that makes Agriculture a virtually crisis proof economy:)
regjeex February 27th, 2009, 08:52 AM I just hope that once this Rob will be materialized in BXU, then, I hope Surigao will follow.. kahit Gmall... or ung SRBH dapat madayon to sya...
jsl_bxu1206 February 27th, 2009, 08:57 AM that would be great for Surigao but also a threat for the local dept stores like the Palmas. the usual thing.

jsl_bxu1206 February 27th, 2009, 09:05 AM correct, food is the most basic and the most prioritized.

BOB-bXu February 27th, 2009, 09:06 AM 2008 State of the City Address
* Bayantel
* Cruztelco,
* Philcom
* Smart
* Globe
* Suncellular communication facilities.
Because of the Coliseum’s strategic presence in the Newtown District, we anticipate a bustling locality, in that area in near future, especially with the
Initial Resettlement Area in Tiniwisan, the Lopez-Habitat and city government subdivisions in Amamaylan, Baan Km.
Soon, we shall see the Riverine Development Project along the banks of the mighty Agusan River for our tourists, and a modern South Super Market in the southern part of the City. . .
We are anticipating upcoming partners in development with the expected coming of the Robinson’s Mall
Concreting of roads for Bobon and Don Francisco will follow this
year . . .
In our urban areas, this year, we cemented roads and provided drainage to
* Hidalgo Village, in Libertad
* Pareja Subdivision, in Bayanihan
* Tamarind Road, in Dagohoy

BXU-GCP February 28th, 2009, 12:47 AM i don't think BXU is ready for call centers. dugay pa cguro.
In 2006, CHED allocated a huge amount from its corporitization fund for State Colleges & Universities(SUC's) for establishments of call centers in at least six SUC's in the country. A technical team was deployed to assess SUC's capabilities in terms of infrastructure(space, electrical, communication, etc) plus the readiness of the place(presence of 24 hours establishments, availability of frontliners, etc).
The result of the assessment included 2 SUC's in Mindanao. These were NORMISIST in Butuan and Western Mindanao State University in Zamboanga.
Sad to note, some problems( or shall we say irregularities?? ) in the implementation of such project resulted to putting it on hold subject to the result of an investigation. Wala namang lumabas na result ng investigation, ang ginawa pinalitan lang ang Chairman ng CHED. Example ito ng napakaraming Cases Unresolve involving questioned government projects.
I posted this to show that as of 2006, BXU is already ready for a call center.

BOB-bXu February 28th, 2009, 08:14 AM 2008 State of the City Address
* Bayantel
* Cruztelco,
* Philcom
* Smart
* Globe
* Suncellular communication facilities.
Soon, we shall see the Riverine Development Project along the banks of the mighty Agusan River for our tourists, and a modern South Super Market in the southern part of the City. . .
We are anticipating upcoming partners in development with the expected coming of the Robinson’s Mall
Concreting of roads for Bobon and Don Francisco will follow this
year . . .
In our urban areas, this year, we cemented roads and provided drainage to
* Hidalgo Village, in Libertad
* Pareja Subdivision, in Bayanihan
* Tamarind Road, in Dagohoy
Moving forwardAs we move onward, we will be implementing more projects that will further enhance our services.
Our next step in effective governance, is to construct the SP building to complement our City Hall.
Just last month, we have approved an additional P3,128,463.39 for our energization program to provide electricity to the most remote sitios in 9 barangays, namely:
Camayahan Barangay Site;
Purok 8, Mayapay:
Purok Damayan, Lumbocan;
Purok 2 and 4, Mandamo;

BALANGAY SHRINE MUSEUM
Location: Ambangan, Libertad
The Balangay Shrine Museum is a unit of the National Museum. It keeps the remnants of the earliest watercraft called “Balanghai” and now more popularly known as the “Butuan Boat” and other cultural materials associated with the boat like human & animal remains, coffins, pots, jewelries, hunting tools, ceramics and other items used during for subsistence.
The Balangays are large, wooden plank-built and edge-pegged boats. This method of construction is typical to Southeast Asian boat making. The planks are one continuous piece carved to shape and made of hardwood identified as Heretiara Litorales, locally known as Dongon. The boat was 15 meters in length and 3 meters across the beam. Only in Butuan, in no other locality in the Philippines or in Southeast Asia for the matter, has there been such rare and extensive recovery of these maritime vessels and the cultural relics associated with an affluent seafaring people in this part of the globe.
These extraordinary finds became one of our country’s National Treasure by virtue of Presidential Proclamation no. 86 during the time of President Corazon C. Aquino. This is something all Butuanons should be proud of.

Situated on top af a small hill called in Butuanon language as “Bood” (promontory) in Brgy. Pinamanculan. On this hill an image of the cross was put up to celebrate the historic event of the first planting of the sign of the cross in Philippine soil. Pigafetta recorded this event which took place in the afternoon of March 31, 1531 after the Easter Mass was celebrated in the morning of the same date. Two Butuanon brother kings attended these Easter ceremonies of 1521. According to the chronicles of Pigafetta, rice fields and Balanghai boats could be seen on the hill where they were. The park was constructed not just for its historical significance but to provide to the constituents of Butuan & visitors to rekindle the past during the first landfall of Magellan in the Philippines.

MAGELLAN’S ANCHORAGE
Brgy. Masao, Butuan City
The significance of the word is explained by what Antonio Pigafetta (The official Chronicler of Magellan’s fleet) wrote… “as we had seen a fire on an island (masawa) that night before, we anchored near it.” The bright light was the beckon in the dark of night that guided them to that faithful isle. Bright light is “Masawa” in Butuanon the only language in the whole archipelago that contains the word. Magellan & his man spent days on that island. Blood compact with Raja Siaiu. Holy Mass (Easter) celebrated & cross planted on top of one of two hills.

Margie’s Kitchen chocolate cake
This uber-gooey chocolate cake is a very rare delicacy because it’s all the way from Butuan City! Flown from Mindanao to Luzon, this is my all-time favorite chocolate cake which I look forward to only a few times in a year. I solely depend on my boyfriend to supply me with my “prime spot.” Prime Spot meaning one of the four edges in a cake! Margie uses only Hershey’s chocolate which is smothered all over the cake. The cake itself is tasty and moist but it’s the caramel lining in the middle that makes my mouth melt with pleasure. This chocolate cake is sooo yummy that I even ration it for utmost contenment, after tasting this all the others just don’t make the grade.

netpal February 28th, 2009, 09:22 AM cake mania....another best cake from Margies...

quote:
This chocolate cake is sooo yummy that I even ration it for utmost contenment, after tasting this all the others just don’t make the grade.

netpal February 28th, 2009, 09:48 AM a little review of the past...
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Cyprus/8446/balanghai.gif
In the whole of the Philippine Archipelago, no archaeological finding has surpassed the balanghai in changing significantly the perception of the historians regarding the past not only of Butuan and Caraga but of the whole country as well.
The balanghai has definitely debunked the claim that before the coming of the Spaniards Philippines had no contacts with the outside world.
Here are some excerpts from the book "1521 Limasawa?" by Adolfo Busa Sanchez, 1977:
(Pigafetta's account upon their embarkation on the island of Mazaua):
.... About two hours later, we saw two balanghai coming. They are large boats and are so-called (by those people). They were full of men, and their king was in the larger of them, being seated under an awning of mats. When the king came near the flagship, the slave spoke to him ....
.... When I reached ashore, the king raised his hands toward the sky and then turned toward us too. We did the same toward him as did all the others. The king took me by the hand; one of his chiefs took my companion; and thus they led us under a bamboo covering, where there was a balanghai, as long as eighty of my palms length, and resembling a fusta. We sat down upon the stern of that balanghai, constantly conversing with signs.
(On page 284 of the same book):
.... From the viewpoint of a Butuanon, a "balanghai" is more of a royal family boat. It is large enough to house the entire family of a datu or rajah. It can be converted into a warboat and it has a capacity of from 25 to 30 passengers or warriors. It is a kind of a boat about 15 to 17 meter long, built on its sides like a wine cask, with strips of timber planks fastened by strong wooden dowels. This boat is so constructed that it can be utilized to easily navigate along narrow waterway such as rivers and big stream, and it could also be used as a fishing boat in the open sea during fair weather. The vessel usually has no outrigger and could be powered only by men with paddles. At the stern is a canopy of a sort of an awning where the head or leader of that boat comfortably sits to give order to his men. The canopy is usually built about three feet high and six feet long, covered with strips of nipa or sago palm leaves (locally called by the Butuanons as liplip) neatly placed on top of the canopy or the top covering of the awning to give shelter to the members of the ruling family or chief as the case may be... On both sides of the balanghai men use their own paddles to power said native boat.

To give you a better grasp of the significance of the balanghai in the history of Caraga and the Philippines, hereunder the words of Ms. Margarita R. Cembrano, the curator of National Museum in Butuan:
... In late 1976, Butuan Boat 1 was discovered near the east bank of the Libertad River. Then in 1977, Boat 2 was found about a kilometer southwest of the first site. All in all, eleven boats were identified at four different open sites (named after the land owners Luna, Toro-Toro, and Fortun and the Shrine Museum). The National Museum excavated and conserved three boats (Boat 1 in 1976, Boat 2 in 1978, and Boat 5 in 1986), despite the furious commercial digging activities for imported ceramics in the mid 1970s and later for processed gold.
Before these discoveries nothing was known about the ancient Philippine boats. The series of Butuan boat archeological excavations contibuted much to the fundamental knowledge about the tradition of boat construction and clarified basic time perspective on the cultures of the ethnic groups of the region....
The radiocarbon (C-14) tests on the three boats (numbered according to the order of their discovery) gave the following results (radiocarbon dates are suggestive rather then conclusive):
Boat 1 1630+-110 years 320 AD
Boat 2 700+-790 years 1250 AD
Boat 5 900+-70 years 900AD
The Butuan Boat, just like the contemporary Badjaw/Sama Laut's Lepa boat, and the barangay boat described in the seventeenth century AD by the Spanish Friar Francisco Alcina in his study of the Eastern Visayas (Samar/Leyte area) material culture, are built in a lashed lug technique. The elements of this boat building tradition are believed to be of Southeast Asian in origin, though there are parallels in Oceania and the Indian Ocean, too. The technique of edge-joining with hardwood spikes is also a tradition in Southeast Asia. Throughout Southeast Asia and the world, it is only in the Philippines where a flotilla of such prehistoric wooden boats are known to exist.

jsl_bxu1206 February 28th, 2009, 10:33 AM my idea man gud of a call center is like People Support (where I was once an employee), Convergys, Etelecare,Teletech, Sykes, etc. for that kind of call centers, (for me lang ha), BXU is not yet ready but eventually will have those. It's nice to hear that a small time call center is now operatiing in BXU.
pessimism ....pessimism....tsk tsk :)
our neighboring house here in villa kanagga...are full of call center agents working in a small time outsourcing company here in BXU who have just opened last year...
jsl_bxu1206 February 28th, 2009, 10:36 AM how many working adults in BXU speak conversational English? if daghan then no problem with the manpower.
I believe ready na ang butuan sa call center industry.. ok man ug fiber optics and microwave infra structure ang butuan (communications infra). pero sa manpower resources kana im not sure.
jsl_bxu1206 February 28th, 2009, 10:39 AM Poorest diay ang Caraga? dili siya 2nd poorest?
Bitaw.. bisan tuod ang caraga is sa pinaka poorest region in PI pero pas pas ang development man sad knowing that the youngest region in PI. Maka tulay ba ta og world class kung under pata sa r10? dili diba... cguro pede pero mil anyos pa sad.
regjeex February 28th, 2009, 10:56 AM Poorest jud ang Caraga since the newest region in PI.
Poorest diay ang Caraga? dili siya 2nd poorest?
regjeex February 28th, 2009, 11:01 AM we can't really tell JSL... some of butuanons actually speaks visayan if ang ka talk niya visayan sad... pero once mag english ang iyang gi talk english sad sila... I remember last time i went to BXU (2nd vacation) naa ko sa jeep going to downtown, i dont know kung students sila kay they're talking english and fluent sila and then ang ubang tao patay mali lang so parang masasabi natin na dili or wala na tagaw ang mga butuanon when some are talking in english... nag tago tago lang sguro ang uban...

Poorest jud ang Caraga since the newest region in PI.
BOB-bXu February 28th, 2009, 11:25 AM how many working adults in BXU speak conversational English? if daghan then no problem with the manpower.
there is NO data nor any means that can quantify that....not even in Manila nor Cebu....nor to any place even in continental US west coast where it is of mixed culture...there is no certified 'census' or count who speaks..or how many use conversational English...because precisely to start with....English is presumed as this country's second official lingua franca in business, science and education...
jsl_bxu1206 February 28th, 2009, 11:27 AM Agusan del Sur is a first class province right? Ga-wonder lang ko kung asa nga category poorest atong province. Pero ingon si Jesus kay blessed are the poor baya.

regjeex February 28th, 2009, 11:34 AM That's what I thought.. but then even 1st class region ang ADS daghan man gud mga unemployed and uneducated diha dapita.. IMO lang ha... knowing that populous sad ang province sa Sur.
Agusan del Sur is a first class province right? Ga-wonder lang ko kung asa nga category poorest atong province. Pero ingon si Jesus kay blessed are the poor baya.
BOB-bXu February 28th, 2009, 11:35 AM Regarding Agusan del Sur....yup conflicting labels....First Class by DILG and DBM standards....yet belonging to poorest list by NSCB..
NSCB uses poverty index...
on the bright side...that one of "poorest" label on Agusan Sur works for that province advantage....it actually gave justice to the province's claim for more foreign grants and developmental physical and social infrastructure as well...
if that province and Surigao del Sur were not on the poorest list.....I dont think they can grab the bulk of infra support the national government is pouring in into the region right now :)
jsl_bxu1206 February 28th, 2009, 11:36 AM ah ok, so one of the poorest diay, hehehe. dapat in the next few years, caraga won't be in the list anymore. :banana:
