May 26, 2009, 6:28pm
BAGUIO CITY – Four persons, two of them children, from two provinces in the Cordillera region are undergoing observation by the Department of Health for possible infection of the influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Meanwhile, an American national and two returning Filipino women are under observation by health authorities in an undisclosed hospital in Butuan City.

The Cordillera regional office of DOH here said two of the four have travelled to a country with confirmed case of influenza A H1N1 and the two others were part of a group which had contact with two Taiwanese nationals who visited the country and later found to be infected with the virus.

Agusan veggie growers ‘NPAs’ no more Friday, 29 May 2009 01:17

“WE were NPAs,” she said in jest as she wiped the beads of sweat off her brow.

This is how Melanie Rosauro described her family’s life before—having “no permanent address” (NPA)—and looking for work in farms to eke out a living.

“It was difficult. We moved from one town to another. We didn’t have our own house,” Melanie said in Cebuano.

“My children were not able to go to school regularly because we hardly made both ends meet,” she said.

That was the Rosauro family’s life until they landed on the fertile lands of Sta. Josefa town in Agusan del Sur after moving from Bansalan, Davao del Sur, at least 150 kilometers away.

With her husband, Rosilito, chairman of Awao High Value Vegetable Growers Association, they encouraged fellow small farmers to engage in ve-getable farming.

The people’s organization (PO) with 30 members had been a beneficiary of the first phase of the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) in 2002, the flagship poverty-alleviation program of the Department of Agriculture).

With initial funding of P150,000, they rented a total of two hectares of land from different areas on which they planted watermelon—not only a suitable crop but which has a potential market in the area.

From watermelon, they expanded into growing high-value vegetables after noting a huge demand for the crops in their locality and the neighboring towns.

Currently, most PO growers are producing vegetables such as ampalaya, eggplant, tomato, squash, okra and string beans, collectively termed as “pinakbet-type vegetables.”

“Pinakbet-type vegetables are more in demand among households compared to ‘chopsuey types,’ such as Chinese cabbage, bell pepper and carrot, which are usually preferred only by institutional buyers such as carinderia and offices,” Melanie said.

For the PO to ensure a year-round supply of vegetables to keep its existing markets and sustain its income, a clustering method in vegetable production was adopted where each group of five PO members is assigned to grow a particular crop.

“If one group is assigned to grow eggplant, another group is assigned to grow ampalaya, and another group is assigned to grow tomato. While a few members continue to grow the chopsuey types,” she explained.

Since the cost of inputs and the prices of vegetables differ, the assignment of growing crop rotates among the group.

“With the scheduled planting and harvesting, we avoid saturating the market and keep the prices steady,” she said, adding that this also helped the farmers increase their production volume—and, consequently, also their income.

Melanie said during peak season, they usually harvest at least 1,000 kilos of vegetables a month. This means that for a 1,000-square-meter area planted to ampalaya, growers will have a gross income of at least P40,000 a month if sold at the prevailing market price of P40 a kilo.

For tomato, growers can have a gross income of at least P30,000 a month with the prevailing market price of P30 a kilo, while growers for squash can have at least P12,000 a month for the prevailing market price of P15 a kilo.

On the average each farmer can earn from P6, 000 to P8, 000 a month enough to support their household needs.

Taking veggie to the next level

Although their crops are producing enough yields, it does not necessarily transform into bigger profits, as oftentimes they fall prey to traders who buy their produce at a much lower price. They have also realized that the quality of the vegetable is another major factor to command premium price.

“Vegetables are highly perishable. If they come from far-flung areas like in our case, they are close to wilting by the time they reach the market,” Melanie said.

“If only our PO has a hauling truck, then we can immediately deliver our produce in the market and can negotiate for better price,” she added.

Thus, in 2007, when phase two of the MRDP, through its Community Fund for Agricultural Development, started accepting proposals for livelihood projects, the farmers proposed for the expansion of their vegetable production—this time putting attention to better marketing.

Having shown good performance during the first phase of MRDP implementation, their proposal was immediately approved, enabling them to avail themselves of the financial assistance from MRDP and the local government of Sta. Josefa.

Most of the amount received was spent in the procurement of the hauling truck to overcome constraints in transporting and marketing of their produce.

The PO then purchased a multicab which it converted into a hauling truck that delivers the consolidated vegetable produce not only in Sta. Josefa but also to public markets in adjacent towns, such as Patin-ay, Trento and San Francisco, and as far as Ormoc City in Leyte province in the Visayas.

“We need to make use of our multicab to have a regular income and, at the same time, maintain our regular buyers,” Melanie said.

Since quality is a major factor toward marketability of vegetable produce, the PO continues to adopt recommended technologies they learned either through training or from their own experiences. These include mulching, protective net and production of organic fertilizers. Aware that organic-vegetable produ-ction has a promising niche market, the PO is now looking into the possibility of producing organically grown vegetables.

“Marketing is not really a problem as long as you will continue to seek ways to improve the quality as well as the availability of your produce,” Melanie said.

Finding a home

“Before we considered ourselves ‘NPAs’ as we move from one town to another just to be hired as farm laborers. Now, although small, my family was able to build our own house and have potable water supply. We are tending our own farm and can look forward to having a regular income,” Melanie said, describing the impact of the project on their lives.

“Besides, my children are regularly attending [classes] in the nearby public elementary school,” she added.

Melanie and her family are no longer afraid of moving and settling somewhere else as vegetable farming found them not just a home but a thriving and peaceful community.

I agree with you Bob 101%. Butuan will have those aforementioned food/coffee chains ahead from other bigger cities if there are local investors willing to get franchises. May BENCH na ang Surigao City, mas nauna magfranchise ang taga Surigao City for Mang Inasal. So the size or prominence of a city is not the only factor to be the first to have outlets of those prominent food/coffee chains.

Iligan was ahead of Butuan for the last 10 years (in terms of population and income) and yet bago pa lang McDonald's nila and only last year lang sila nagkaroon ng mall. although wala pa silang Pizza Hut, meron naman silang Red Ribbon.

Gov't expects increased UK tourists in Mindanao this year

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 05/30/2009 12:46 PM

The Department of Tourism (DOT) expect more tourist arrivals in Mindanao as the British government recently lifted travel restrictions to certain parts of the south.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has now allowed its citizens to travel to Davao and Caraga regions (northeastern part of Mindanao) after a two-year restriction. This, he said, will generate more revenues to local communities.

"Amendments will encourage tourists from the UK to experience nature, adventure, and culture that the island of Mindanao has to offer," Durano said in a statement. Some of Mindanao's popular tourist destinations include Siargao, Butuan, Pearl Farm, Mt. Apo, and Compostela Valley.

"This development signals growth in travel brought about by the strong security measures now being implemented in the area. The best thing about this is that the local communities will directly benefit, with an additional demand to meet," he added.

According to the DOT's research and statistics division, British tourists account for the biggest number of European tourists to the Philippines. DOT said that last year, some 87,422 UK tourists arrived in the country, reflecting 2.78 percent of the total traffic for 2008.

The British FCO earlier advised its citizens not to travel to any part of Mindanao due to "terrorist and insurgent activity." However, the DOT said that the political climate in the region has already changed, making travel to these areas "safe and particularly rewarding."

"It is indeed a welcome respite from the present events that have seemed to be unfair to the tourism industry lately," said DOT Undersecretary for tourism planning and promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr, adding that this will encourage stronger ties with other government agencies.

The DOT reported 1.3 million tourist arrivals in the country for the first three months of the year, a 10.3-percent rise from the figure recorded in the same period last year, indicating another banner year for the tourism industry.

Durano said over 1,230 hotel and resort rooms worth P8 billion were opened early this year, and another 2,315 would be built by year-end. These are part of the P550-billion expansion projects of various investors involving some 7,000 new hotel and resort rooms.

The department said it is expecting the tourism sector to create more jobs for Filipinos this year, helping the country recover from the economic crisis.

Being familiar with how they operate and expand, it's very hard for me to believe that they would venture first in BXU although I'm hopeful that they would. Who doesn't want the siren coffee shop to brew in our city?

The company is very transparent to all their employees with regards to its expansion so everybody's updated down to the baristas that's why I'll be asking again if it's true that they will open in BXU.

I love Starbucks too! Very much!^^

you belong to the old school of Butuanons gyud Jsl  always thinking on the impossible rather than on what is possible :yes:

what about Razon's? its only BXU yet that has an outlet here in Mindanao...

Butuan World War II heroes honored at National Flag Day celebration

by Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (May 29) -- Local World War II heroes of this city were honored in a simple but solemn ceremony spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Caraga in time with the celebration of the National Flag Day on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Butuan City Library grounds, this city.

In his message, DENR-Caraga Regional Executive Director Edilberto Buiser stressed that Filipinos should pay reverence to those who fought "to ensure that the flag – our national symbol of freedom continues to soar and announce that we Filipinos are free people and the Philippines is a free nation."

RED Buiser also emphasized that patriotic Filipinos in the likes of Juan "John" Calo, a true-blood Butuanon World War II hero who gained fame during the Japanese occupation must be honored. "His exploits, together with other Butuanon war heroes is very humbling," he said.

Also, Buiser said that with the celebration of the National Flag Day, all Caraganons must take John Calo an inspiration in order to have better Caraga. "As we celebrate today the National Flag Day, let the heroism, the strength and the resolve of John Calo be our inspiration to show that the national government agencies in the region and the local government units and its political leaders are one in pursuit for a better Caraga," Buiser said.

Buiser also reiterated what DENR Secretary Jose Atienza, Jr. said regarding this year's theme "Kagitingan, Kagalingan at Kasipagan Tungo sa Tunay na Kalayaan". He said, the theme echoes President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's resolve to foster unity among Filipinos under a national symbol telling of an extraordinary country blessed by God.

Joining RED Buiser in offering wreath to local heroes' statues located in front of the Butuan City Library Building here are local officials of the city represented by City Councilor Rodrigo Dayaday, the church sector represented by Fr. Joesilo Amalla, DENR officials and Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Caraga OIC-Regional Director Abner Caga. (PIA-Caraga)

Nasipit Port to install 12 CCTV cameras

by Jocelyn E. Morano

Butuan City (29 May) -- 12 CCTV cameras will be installed around the premises of the Philippine Ports Authority in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, this was confirmed by its OIC Manager Mr. Oscar Beluan.

"The 12 CCTV cameras might be installed in June because the funding has already been approved", said Mr. Beluan.

With the installation of the CCTV cameras, authorities will be able to monitor all activities within the port area and the system will help in the battle against criminalities and any suspicious behaviour so that PPA authorities will be deployed to do some checking.

It is to be recalled that officials of the Philippine Ports Authority was alerted after a suspicious package remained unclaimed near the Super Ferry ticket booth, a few distance from the entrance gate of the departure area and found out to have contained an improvised explosive devise made from ammonium nitrate, but was successfully detonated by bomb experts who immediately responded to the area.

"The deployment of CCTV surveillance cameras deters the suspects from committing crime due to the fear of being caught", added PPA OIC Manager Oscar Beluan.

Nasipit Port Police remains on alert level 2 and security measures have been tightened for safety of passengers coming in and out of Nasipit port.

Mr.Beluan assured the public, that the situation still is under control and there's no need to panic.

Meanwhile, Police Regional Director Jaime Milla revealed, no one claimed to have been responsible of whoever left the said IED in the area.

Police authorities in the entire region were directed to be on red alert and beefed up security measures on all vital installations to prevent any similar incidents. (Radyo ng Bayan Butuan/PIA-Caraga)

By SHERYL WuDUNN, Special to The New York Times
Published: Saturday, October 6, 1990

The Government announced early today that a renegade colonel had surrendered, ending a military mutiny whose avowed goal was the independence of the southern island of Mindanao.

The rebel leader, Alexander Noble, is a former bodyguard of President Corazon C. Aquino. When his army followers seized two military camps in the towns of Butuan and Cagayan de Oro early Thursday morning, officials speculated that the challenge marked the beginning of the seventh major coup attempt against Mrs. Aquino in her four and a half years in power.

But no other Philippine Army units joined the uprising, and it fizzled after Government planes bombed the rebel positions on Friday.

Surrenders to Politician

''Colonel Noble proceeded to the house of Senator Pimental in Cagayan de Oro City and turned himself in,'' Col. Juanito Rimando, a spokesman for the Philippine armed forces, said. ''He will have to face the courts.''

Aquilino Pimental, a Senator from Cagayan de Oro, had been trying to negotiate with Colonel Noble on Friday. But the armed forces spokesman said the surrender, which occurred sometime after 3 A.M., was not negotiated. ''He may have planned to escape but he couldn't do it,'' Colonel Rimando said.

The Government said it had arrested 152 rebel soldiers but that it was still ''conducting mopping-up operations.'' [In Cagayan de Oro, Colonel Noble told reporters that his basic goal had been to call attention to Mindanao's problems, and that he had achieved it, The Associated Press reported. [''At least the basic issues can be resolved peacefully,'' the renegade colonel was quoted as saying. Senator Pimental said the rebels had asked him to press ''their cause for Mindanao'' with the Government, the agency said.] Colonel Noble had been hiding in the jungles of northern Mindanao since his involvement in plotting the two attempts against President Aquino last December. The police had offered a $40,000 reward for his capture.

On Thursday, he declared Mindanao, the second-largest Philippine island, an independent state, but the Government immediately dismissed the claim. He has engaged the support of Mindanao's large population of Muslims, whose struggle for independence led to bloodshed more than a decade ago.

Gen. Renato S. de Villa, the armed forces Chief of Staff, said he was ''100 percent'' certain that Colonel Noble was operating together with the leadership of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement, an underground group of right-wing former military officers involved in previous coup attempts.

Analyzing the revolt before the surrender, Alexander Magno, a professor of political science at University of the Philippines, said: ''Apparently the underground network began to develop a plan, although it was not prepared to execute it as yet.

''Noble, under pressure, initiated the plan independently, hoping to create momentum, hoping for support from comrades in the rebel military network,'' he said. ''But a sequence of camp defections would have to occur quickly to build political momentum and force the Government to commit mistakes and to panic in the face of the defection. This didn't occur and Noble is isolated now.''

The Government of President Aquino, which has suppressed six attempts to topple her from power since she took office in 1986, has in recent months purged military commanders it did not trust and replaced them with loyalists.

Still, the Government has been struggling to deal with a sagging economy whose problems have been aggravated by the sharp rise in oil prices, an earthquake in July and the return of thousands of Filipino workers who have fled Kuwait.

To address those problems, Mrs. Aquino announced an ambitious economic plan on Friday that included more taxes and measures to insure supplies of oil. The taxes will primarily affect the wealthy, and it is not clear whether the plan will bring more stability to her Government.

Perception of Aquino

Military analysts say morale among soldiers is low because of poor conditions and mismanagement, and Mrs. Aquino is increasingly perceived as a weaker leader.

Military analysts and diplomats say the poor state of the economy and growing discontent were probably factors in the timing of the rebellion. Colonel Noble seized military camps in the two cities with the help of 200 to 400 armed soldiers and civilian supporters.

The Government's air strike on Friday morning, by two T-28 fighters deployed from a nearby air base, destroyed buildings, trucks and equipment at the camp in Butuan. The Government said it has not determined whether anybody was killed. Colonel Noble apparently staged his mutiny without firing a single shot.

i like how the city hall of butuan looks like on the outside, its being held on top of the platform and has a very wide site development and the greenery area..You can view the edifice on its 360 degrees with the road all around for versatility of access being provided..It has a dramatic entrance being paved with bricks noticing the grandeur and the golden symmetry of the building..On the other side, when you get inside the central atrium, A wide and spacious lobby awaits you while entering, the problem lang kay medu may pagkainit ang lobby and i examined the skylight wala diay outlet and inlet of air na tagprovide towards the outside sa sides sa skylight. I immediately told my uncle about it coz he is working in the legal dept sa city hall. Ako ra ini observation.. Gamay ra ini nga problema and i hope na naremedyuhan na ini..for me the city hall of butuan compared to the tagum kay theyre both modern contemporay and will serve as an example how public building exhibiting exemplary beauty in mindanao..An ako lang sa tagum is taht im in great diamay kay theyre hiring australian architects bagan wayay salig sa kapwa Filipino architects:ohno:....

GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: GRYE) "Fueling the Future" -- Today the company is moving its business and corporate headquarters closer to its jatropha oil refinery site in Nasipit Harbor and Demo Jatropha Farm in Agusan Del Norte. The company expects the move and transition to take place within 30 days. GreenGold Ray Energies brings together to serve as one of the large jatropha growers and producer of the crude oil and refined jatropha oils combined.

This processing plant is a good combination of equipments for a small scale biodiesel conversion plant that can produce 1,500,000 gallons of good quality biodiesel per year. Security tightened in Nasipit port following discovery of homemade bomb

BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/31 May) -- Authorities have tightened security in port areas and bus terminals in the region after police discovered a week ago an improvised bomb placed near a ticketing booth inside the International Port in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.
Acting Philippine Port Authority Manager, Oscar Beluan, said they would install 12 closed ciruit TV surveillance cameras within the port’s premises to monitor activities in the area.

“The 12 CCTV cameras might be installed in June because the funding has already been approved,” he said.

He said the deployment of these cameras would deter the suspects from committing crimes “due to the fear of being caught.”

On May 24, maritime police assigned at the Nasipit port found an improvised bomb near the ticketing booth of the Super Ferry Lines, a few meters from the entrance of the departure lobby.

Chief Supt. Jaime Milla, Caraga police regional director, said the homemade explosive contained about half a kilo of ammonium nitrate with nails connected to an electrical detonating device.

He said it was immediately taken away to avoid detection and panic among the people who were inside the port.

Bomb experts belongingto1302nd Maritime Police Precinct based in Nasipit Port immediately responded to the report and defused the explosive.

Milla said the improvised explosive is ”uncharacteristic” or different from the bombs being used in other parts of Mindanao.

He called on public to be vigilant and to report immediately any suspicious-looking baggage especially if they are wrapped, securely taped and unattended.

Beluan said the Nasipit Port Police is on alert level 2 and security measures have been tightened for safety of passengers coming in and out of the port. (Alden Pantaleon, Jr./MindaNews)

Elementary Pupil Receives Notebooks under the Read Right and be Bright Program
June 2, 2009
by: striker_jem

Butuan –Grade 3 pupils from Butuan Central Elementary School and Ong Yiu Central Elementary School was the first to received notebooks from Vice Mayor Dino Claudio Sanchez in a simple ceremony held today in their respective schools.

This is under the Vice Mayor’s learning advocacy program dubbed as “Read Right and be Bright,” to encourage students from Grades 1 to 3 to develop a very good habit of reading.

Each notebooks has a story about “The Ant and the Grasshopper” printed at the back in its img_0367effort to inculcate to the young minds the necessity to prepare ahead and to build up an understanding on life’s lesson and good attitude.

“This is our second year of implementation of the Read Right and be Bright Program with a total allocation of 15,000 notebooks for this year, to be distributed to 102 elementary schools in Butuan City”, said Vice Mayor Dino Claudio Sanchez.

The Vice Mayor also belied accusations that the initiative was politically motivated as 2010 img_0368elections are fast approaching.

He explained, that even during the time that he is the Chairman of the Sangguniang Panlunsod Committee on Education, he already had this advocacy and remained consistent in implementing learning interventions giving priority to indigent school children in public schools for the past 7 years.

The Vice mayor added, “Instead of criticizing the program, the learning advocacy program should be supported.”

First day of Class, Orderly
June 1, 2009

by: striker_jem

Butuan – The opening of classes was orderly, organized and with only minimal complaints from parents unlike in previous years.

Early today, Department of Education officials visited different schools and noticed a marked improvement in school facilities.

During schools Monday Flag raising on first day of classes, Dep Ed Caraga reminded teachers to educate students the importance of hygiene to prevent the spread of any disease.

Traffic Aides remains on alert along school zones, taking into priority the A.D. Curato Street where Butuan Central Elementary School and Agusan National High School were located, and are considered the largest populated school in Butuan.

Traffic situation was generally manageable despite the monitored heavier-than-usual traffic, said Police Senior Inspector Ave Mario Romero of the Butuan City Police Traffic Office.

However, several internet cafés were reprimanded and warned for accepting elementary and secondary students who were caught playing online games during school hours by roving police officials from Police Regional Office 13 spearheaded by Police Senior Supt. Ramon Espiritu.

As of June 1 Dep Ed Caraga has still to collate reports from city and provincial areas to First day of Class, Orderlycome up with the exact figure of students enrolled for school year 2009-2010.

Starting today, schools in the region are accepting late enrolees and transferees.

The Police Regional Office 13 likewise maintains the heightened red alert status in the whole region citing reports that the opening of classes was peaceful and orderly with no untoward incidents that has been recorded in police stations region wide.

Police Senior Supt. Nestor Fajura, Chief of Operation Division in PRO 13 said, police personnel were visible in schools and PNP tapped barangay officials and civilian volunteer’s organization to augment police personnel in securing public school students in far-flung areas.

Maybe LBC put up this building because Butuan is one of the top airports that has the most air cargo movements/deliveries in Mindanao according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (fomerly, Air Transportation Office).

It's no longer ATO since last year I think, it's now the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and it is still a body of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).^^

Agreed. Compared to last year, Butuan gained more passengers. Speaking of Aircraft movements, Philippine Airlines has the most number of aircraft movements to Butuan City than Cebu Pacific, but speaking of the most passengers carried to and from Butuan, 5J carried even more passengers than PR. :)

according to Cebu Pac Staff, dugay na nila tag request na i upgrade ang aircraft nila to jet pero as of now, wala pa daw vacant nga airbus to serve the route ug they cant even make it a daily sched kay kulang lagi daw sa aircraft. lisod pud daw i give-up ang siargao route kay it's doing well naman.

puno puno ang bookings daw gihapon between Cebu and Butuan even around 3rd week of June.....they need to add another frequency for this segment

Di ba duol ra ang Kalibo sa Boracay? Why not make a side trip? Ka remember na nuon ko nga when we arrived na in Caticlan Airport, na delayed among sundo from the hotel because of miscommunication. The driver thought we would be arriving from Kalibo airport.

No confirmed A(H1N1) cases in Caraga, says DOH

by Lovely Laudette Gamba

Butuan City (June 3) -- "There are no confirmed cases of A(H1N1) infection in the region." Dr. Gerna Manatad of the Department of Health – Caraga assures members of the Regional Law Enforcement Coordination Committee (RLECC) during its monthly meeting, here recently.

The assurance came amidst clamor over A(H1N1), following reports of a possible infection in the region. Recently, one foreigner and 2 balikbayan Pinays were suspected to be infected of A(H1N1) virus after exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

As of press time, suspected infected persons have been tested negative.

To keep the region swine flu free, there is strict surveillance and monitoring in all exit and entry points in the region. Health teams that would test and interview incoming guests and tourists are also put up in seaports, airports and bus terminals.

Barangay Health Response Teams (BHERTS) are also activated to monitor tourists in their locality. The BHERTS are instructed to keep watch of the tourists in their locality and to immediately report to DOH flu-like symptoms in the area.

PSupt. Ramon Espiritu also instructed the chief of the Aviation Security Group to assists the health teams in the airports.

"The police officer assign in the airport should see to it that disembarking passengers follow the quarantine procedures. You help DOH by instructing the passengers where to go and what to do. You can use a megaphone to do that," says Col. Espiritu.

Espiritu stressed that police presence other than maintain peace and order could also help compel tourists to submit to the monitoring requirements of the health teams. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan Police to Donate School Supplies to Less Privileged Children
June 4, 2009
by: striker_jem

Butuan –Police personnel from Butuan City Police Office including its 5 stations will donate school supplies next week taking into priority the less privileged children in elementary schools in far flung barangays.

“This would be our first time to donate school supplies coming from our own pockets for humanitarian missions”, said SPO1 Marifel Cortez of the Butuan City Police station 1.

The Program, dubbed as Gamit Pang-eskwela, Alay ng Pulisya will be launched simultaneously in different schools selected by 5 police stations on June 10.

It is to be recalled that during the Civil Service eligibility exam conducted in April of this year, Butuan City Police Office was able to collect thousands of pencils, ballpens, and erasers and pencil sharpeners donated by the examinees.

Likewise, examinees from the NAPOLCOM Police entrance Exam voluntary gave their pencils to BCPO.

Seeing the necessity of students, police men and women also agreed voluntarily contribute more by giving notebooks and other school supplies believing, that these would result in improving the school children’s perceptions of policemen.

City Police Director Joseph Plaza hopes to sustain the program and encourage other organizations to support the cause in trying to make a better life for the people in far flung barangays.

“This is the best way to see and keep the people supporting the government and to gain cooperation at the same time improve the relation with the community in our campaign to curb criminality,” he said.

Dengue Cases Slightly Increased in Region 13
June 3, 2009
by: striker_jem

Butuan – Dengue cases from January to May rose by 9% compared to last year, this was revealed by the Department of Health Caraga Regional office.

The number of cases for the first 5 months of the year rose to 230 compared to last year’s 211.

Dengue incidents in Surigao City were the highest followed by Agusan del Sur and Butuan City.

According to DOH-Caraga, in terms of ages of those who were stricken with the disease, it ranged from 5 to 84 years old but more than half of the cases belonged to the 0 to 10 years age group.

Data also showed that 4 died of dengue.

Relative to these, DOH Regional Director Leonita Gorgolon activated its health personnel and coordinated with the local government in taking preemptive measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

Campaign against dengue were also intensified through implementation of the Search and Destroy, wherein its key strategy in dengue control is to tackle the root of the problem, which is to deny Aedes mosquitoes the place to breed.
Communities were also encouraged to adopt a multi-pronged approach to control dengue.
“The main thrusts in our approach are preventive surveillance and control, public education and community involvement”, said Director Gorgolon.
On June 5 DOH-Caraga will launch the Dengue Awareness Month in Surigao City with the theme: “Puksain ang Kiti-Kiti, sugpuin ang Dengue”.

EDIT: They are not the same. Lahi diay na silang duha. Lahi ang mga owners anang subdivision.

this project was conceptualized by the province 15 years ago (approximate)...they initially made invitations for private enterprises to invest in this project..I don't know what is the status of this one now.

As far as I know, this is under the watch of PEEDMO of the Provincial government.....maybe Franz-BXU can shed more light about this as he can easily ask someone in the capitol to give info about the status of this project..

You took this photo yersterday @Franz,right? I happen to pass by this area
this morning and saw some wooden posts being erected at intervals around
a third portion only of the perimeter. Possibly for a fence? or for a building
lay-out?...hmmmm SANA :)
