Happy New Year To all....

Thats indeed good and great news. SM Prime I know has made audience with city hall....but I do not know with the exact date with Robinsons.

My brod in law was able to watch the interview of the mayor. Now that he said it...I believe it will finally end all speculations and those long standing rumors.

Considering their interest towards the city, If these malls are built almost at the same time frame...I must then say that it will further heighten the building boom in the city

if I were to recommend to SM Prime, I would recommend Butuan's newly opened southern lands especially that along the newly built high way

for Robinsons, they could put it in Obrero along the widened Magsaysay Ave. at the corner of R. Calo in Poyohon.

dapat widely separated sila from each other and with decent distance from the congested urban center

there's no official date yet, but I believe it will be in time also for the inaugural of the 2nd bridge and new by pass high way and probably the ground breaking of the airport expansion with the President in the lead this May

BUTUAN CITY: Booming and Blooming (Thread IV)

http://www.butuan.gov.ph/butuan/Images/beggining.jpg
“In the beginning, there was no Philippines but there was BUTUAN”

Located at the Northeastern part of Agusan Valley sprawling across the Agusan River is Butuan City, known for its colorful history and culture. BUTUAN is a term believed to have originated from the sour fruit “Batuan”. Others opined, it came from a certain “Datu Buntuan”, a chieftain who once ruled Butuan. Scholars believed, it came from the word “But-an”, which literally means a person who has sound and discerning disposition. Whichever theories appear credible depends on the kind of people residing in Butuan, for whatever is said about them, Butuan continues to live on.

Butuan’s history, culture, arts and people date back to the 4th century as showcased in museums which makes Butuan an exciting source of cultural artifacts in Mindanao.

As early as the 10th century, according to the Chinese Song Shi (history), people from Butuan had already established trading relations with the kingdom of Champa in what is now South Vietnam.
By the 11th century, Butuan was the center of trade and commerce in the Philippines. The best evidence to prove this fact is the discovery of 9 balangays (The BUTUAN BOAT) and other archeological finds in the vicinities of Butuan City, particularly in Ambangan, Libertad near the old EL RIO de BUTUAN and MASAO River.

Welcome to a City that has seen over 1,683 years of recorded history! The original site of the First Easter Mass in Philippine Soil, here, the present nurtures the past and vice-versa. While the future waits promisingly in the wings. Come up close!

Caraga eyes Russian, other tourist markets
Thursday, January 04 2007 @ 11:23 AM GMT
BALITA.ORG

The recent arrival of Russian tourists from Vladivostok is bring the enthusiam of the local tourism industry in Northeastern and Southern Mindanao to new heights, the Department of Tourism said here today.

In fact, this early, it appears that the locals are already preparing the strategies that could attract the new market into their lush, verdant and hospitable communities.

This development also made local entrepreneurs to forecast that 2007 could be another banner year for tourism in what used to be the country's logging capital.

DOT Regional Director Letty Tan of Caraga region estimated that in 2007, investments in tour - oriented businesses are expected to rise in Davao and Caraga regions.

However, the DoT, said that the key players of the industry must ensure that new businesses would really come in.

They noted that the DOT has opened new tourist markets among the Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Europeans and the US.

In an effort to boost the region's tourism industry, tourism officials and other stakeholders led by Stanley Lau will join the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) in Singapore next month.

"We will continue our advocacy in the hope that those who showed interest in investing in Mindanao, particularly Davao, Agusan and Surigao provinces would come sooner than expected," a tourism official said.

Tourism officials also said Korea and China has been a part of the DOT's plan to bring these tourists to Mindanao and not only in Manila and Cebu.

Meanwhile, the DoT noted that the domestic market also played well in filling the gap where business and leisure travelers made tourism successful in Butuan, Surigao and Davao.

In Davao City alone, the DoT noted that last year was a wonderful year for Davao where many new infrastructures were put in place, like the synchronized traffic signals.

Business leader Joji Iligan-Bian agreed with the DOT that 2007 to 2010 would be a wonderful era for tourism in Caraga and the Davao provinces.

Bian urged local investors to get their business formalized and get themselves recognized by the government.

She noted that China is one potential market for tourism and business establishments here might just as well, get ready for the arrival of sino tourists.

In China, she said, they are also preparing their people and their government because more and more among them are getting interested in various fields of business investments in the Philippines.

As China evolves into an economic power, manages to empower its citizen in becoming an elite sector, she said.

She added that "with more disposable income, the Chinese have high purchasing power and the capacity to travel.

Bian warned however, that aside from China, the local can also look at other areas like Europe where the denizens are looking for pleasure sites where they may burn their money. (PNA)

Arroyo to open power plant

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO and GERRY L. GORIT

BUTUAN CITY — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will personally inaugurate a multi-million-dollar coal-fired plant in of the Steag State Power, Inc., in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, today, this was learned yesterday.

Event organizers said that President Arroyo will officially grace the inauguration of the 210-megawatt (mw) plant in Villanueva. She will be assisted by top regional and provincial officials led by Gov. Antonio Calingin.

Other guests will include Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano, League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP)-Misamis Oriental chapter president and Tagoloan Mayor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano, and Villanueva Mayor Juliette Uy.

The Mindanao power plant is inside a 55.42-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate (PIE-MO) in Villanueva town. The plant is implemented under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme based on a 25-year power purchase agreement with the National Power Corp. (Napocor).

The Mindanao coal-fired plant is considered one of Mindanao’s biggest single foreign direct investment in 10 years costing US$ 305 million. The plant has two 105-mw coal-fired thermal units, 6-km. 138-kilovolt (kv transmission line, and a 5-kilometer. underground raw water pipeline.

Funds for the project has been derived from Germany’s Steag Aktiengesellschaft (STEAG-AG), which invested 89 percent of the total cost, and the country’s State Investment Trust, Inc. (SITI) providing 11 percent equity.

"This multi-million dollar project will add to a favorable economic climate starting 2007," said Jerome Soldevilla, Steag communication officer.

He added: "The project will also bring an optimistic outlook for the economy in 2007 as it answers the call of the President to use alternative fuel and responds to the government’s campaign for investments in the power industry to attain stability in electric power supply to avert a potential power shortage in Mindanao.

"The plant is expected to contribute 15 percent of the total power demand of the island," Soldevila said.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) reported that all three diesel power plants (DPP) and the seven hydro power plants (HPP) in Northern Mindanao have a combined capacity of 1,031.20 megawatts representing 61.8 percent of Mindanao’s total installed capacity.

The region’s energy demand is 963.91mw in the previous years.

The boiler pressure test ceremony (BPTC) for the power plant done Jan. 18 last year showed that the boiler passed all local and international standards on boiler pressure.

During the test, the highest allowable force was applied to probe the mechanical strength of the water/steam tubes and pipes of the generator for acceptance and certification by the country’s Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which designed, manufactured and erected the boiler in accordance with their standards, it was learned.

The ceremonial etching of the assigned 8-digit serial numbers to the data plates of the two boilers highlighting the BPTC was participated in by Dr. Axel Weishaupt, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Philippines, Dr. Washington Sycip, founder of the SGV Group and chairman of the board of directors of Steag-SPI, Claus-Peter Bell, executive vice president of Steag, Allen Roxas, president of SITI, and Takehiko Saeki, chief executive officer of Kawasaki Plant System.

Butuan is the nearest city with an administrative office of the Presidential Adviser for Mindanao and CARAGA Affairs kaya it was datelined in Butuan.

That Villanueva Plant will benefit Butuan too considering the power it will contribute to both Northern and Northeastern Mindanao power grids of NTC Transco

It was a promised by the President herself during her inauguration of work of office in Butuan (after oath taking in Cebu) that the region shall have an exclusive presidential assistant.

It can be easily recalled that the region despite its huge agro industrial, eco tourism, mineral, timber potentials has been previously 'neglected' by past administrations, with more funds going into the ARMM under ZOPAD, Davao and NorMin Regions; CARAGA had been previously at the backseat even if it had regained a separate administrative status from region 10.

I believe the region and the city in particular is 'blessed' now considering the increasing volume of developmental projects both socioeconomic and physical infrastructures the area is getting these past years. The city also seems to be getting more infrastructure developments than some bigger cities.

most of the projects are ongoing and some are almost complete. What is also nice to note are the new pledges and the planned programs awaiting funding with support from Malacanang.

once these projects are fully completed, I would expect a city leapfrogging ahead in time.

Boom....Boom.....Boom

Yeah, that's a great idea. But keep in mind though that since this is an urban forum, the banner should be composed of scenes which are obviously urban, and no text markings please. It should be 719x123 in size and 72dpi. I'd suggest the 2nd Magsaysay Bridge to be the dominant element of the banner. If you're done, please feel free to send the banner to me via PM or to Jan, via email (jan@skyscrapercity.info) ;)

12TH Asean Summit Seen to Boost Tourism in Mindanao

BUTUAN CITY, Jan 8 Asia Pulse - The 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit to be held in Cebu is seen to boost tourism not only in the Visayas but also in the southern Philippines.
"We are very much sure and optimistic that this big gathering of ASEAN leaders will further enhance the tourism industry," said Mindanao Development Champion Secretary Jesus G. Dureza.

Dureza, who is also the Presidential Adviser for the Peace Process, said that Mindanao, because of its exquisite tourism assets, will stand to benefit from the ASEAN Summit in Cebu on Jan 10-15.

The historic event is expected to buoy the spirit of the people with the Presidential Office's declaration for non-working holidays in Cebu during the period.

"We expect some of the foreign delegates who will start arriving in the country on Tuesday (Jan. 9) to come and see not only the tourist areas near the summit venue but also of Mindanao even before, during and after the event will take place," Dureza said.

He cited world-class vacations destinations, cultural attractions, colorful festivals, pristine beaches and excellent diving that will give interest to the foreign visitors.

Meanwhile, the Mindanao Development Co. (MEDCo), said that Mindanao's strategic location as the gateway to the ASEAN has earned the support of the national government by granting tax exemptions until Sept. 2008 for those traveling to Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) destinations.

"These travels, however, had to originate from any point in Mindanao and Palawan," the MEDCo said.

Aside from granting 50 per cent discount on airport fees, discounted port tariff rates in the BIMP-EAGA equivalent to 50 per cent will also be granted to ships carrying the Philippine and Malaysian flags, the MEDCo added.

Agusan del Sur town under state of calamity as Caraga reels from floods

The Office of Civil Defense on Friday declared the municipality of Sta. Josefa in Agusan del Sur under a state of calamity due to rising flood waters brought about by continuous rains in the Caraga region.

The number of flood-affected families in Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur has already gone up to 30,617 or an estimated 127,170 people.

The OCD estimate on Thursday of P20-million damage to property, including agriculture, livestock and infrastructure, is expected to increase.

Over 2,000 hectares of agricultural lands were reported to be destroyed in Agusan del Sur.

The OCD said the provincial and city disaster coordinating councils in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur and Butuan are already assisting in relief operations for the flood victims.

Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza of Agusan del Sur ordered the deployment of additional rescue teams for the 73 barangays submerged in flood waters in the towns of Prosperidad, Sta. Josefa, San Francisco, Loreto, Veruela Esperanza, Bunawan and Talacogon.

Four people were already reported missing and are feared dead in towns of Veruela, Bunawan and Esperanza in Agusan del Sur and San Miguel in Surigao del Sur.

Power in some municipalities of Agusan del Sur has also been cut off.

In Agusan del Sur province alone, the number of flood victims increased to 9,339 families or 44,346 people.

Some major roads in the three provinces have become impassable.

Plaza has released an advisory calling all local disaster councils to be vigilant and to advise residents of flood prone areas to go to higher grounds or to evacuation centers for their safety.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) said the rains will last until Saturday in Butuan and in other parts of the Caraga region.

P20M property damage in Agusan floods

Over P20 million worth of property, including agriculture, livestock and infrastructure, was damaged due to floods brought about by continuous rains in Agusan province, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported Thursday.

The municipal tourism office of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur said about 3,000 families were displaced and evacuated to higher grounds.

Meanwhile, 12 towns in Butuan City including Pangabugan, Baan, Basag, Golden Ribbon, Lemon, Mahay, Los Angeles, Maug, Tiniwisan, Obrero, Agao and Mandamo are currently submerged in flood waters.

Almost 9,000 residents were evacuated to seven schools in the area.

The city government, together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, distributed relief goods to the evacuees. The evacuees appealed for additional medicines for their children who have cough, colds and flu.

There were no reported injuries or casualties.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration cautioned that the rains will last until Saturday in Butuan and in other parts of the Caraga region.

The bypass road is an access road for vehicles na di gustong dumaan sa Butuan City proper. So kung galing ka Cagayan tapos gusto mong pumunta sa Surigao or Davao, d mo na kailangang dumaan sa City proper. iwas ka na sa traffic, mas lesser time pa ang travel. This is connected from the bridge going to Bancasi... D ko alam kung gaano ka haba.. basta, mataas sya... then sa kabila, from the brdige going to ampayon yata.. im not so sure...

the by pass highway is a 13 kilometer long paved highway that connects the present highways of Iligan-CDO-Butuan Highway in the west to the Surigao-Butuan-Davao Highway in the east.

From the west, it traverses the barangays of Libertad, Bonbon, Vila Kanannga then from a viaduct on to the bridge to cross the west approach again by a viaduct towards the barangays of Lemon, Mahay, Ampayon on to Antongalon. There is a spur of connecting road to barangay Maguinda to link to the Baan High way.

The by pass road is part of the long term plan of the Butuan Circumferential Road system.

talking about the road condition of JC Aquino Ave which is the present road link to the present highways, this road I guess is heavily used already. They should make it mandatory to use the Capitol-Bonbon Road as the parallel to JC Aquino. Those heavy trucks travelling within the city proper should use this road rather than JC Aquino para mahapsay ang dagan.

Currently, there is easy congestion once they reach Ochoa Ave junction and becomes worse as they reach the AD Curato, M. Calo junction. Kusog maka guba ra ba ning mga heavy vehicles sa dalan.

That BCWD works along JC Aquino should be expidited as they add congestion to the road. They also make the road dusty :bash:

I think they should add another pedestrian overpass right in front of Gaisano Mall and DBP. There's heavy pedestrian traffic along that area especially during afternoons.

5 years ago, you can walk in comfort as you cross from DBP going to Capitol Ave.. today you have to walk fast or even run as that traffic lights is not synchronized...worst the vehicle volume is quiet heavy already these days..dako gyud chance na maapsan ka ug sakyanan kung mag hinay hinay ka ug tabok

yup, agree with that.

that traffic light is "manhid" to the number of pedestrians. If I havent mistaken that pedestrian lane has sensor underneath the concrete to detect the volume of passers above it.

BIR Caraga 2006 collection up by 15.61%

BUTUAN City (BEN BALCE/Jan. 16, ’07) - THE Bureau of Internal Revenue in Caraga region, covering the four provinces of the area, has exceeded its collection goal for 2006 of P1,578,359,000 by 15.61 percent. The total collections in the amount of P1,620,734,770.87 for the current year is P42,375,770.87 more than the target.

BIR Caraga director Tamanatao S. Amerol said the increase was due to concerted efforts and cooperation of the region’s revenue personnel, especially the revenue district officers who are the front liners in tax collection.

"The Bureau of Internal Revenue Revenue Region No. 17 has good reason to smile and be proud these days," Amerol said, adding, "It has, despite all odds, surpassed 2006 collection goals."

As of Jan 11, Amerol said their partial collection has reached P1,620,734,770.87.

Amerol clarified that the amount is still not the final amount until such time that the official report will be submitted.

"The tax payer’s cooperation and voluntary compliance contributed so much to the good performance shown by this revenue region," he said.

BIR Caraga Region oversees the collection efforts of four revenue district offices, namely Revenue District 103 in Butuan City headed by Edilberto C. Radaza, Revenue District 104 in Bayugan, Agusan del Sur headed by Lordel T. Monteclaro, Revenue District 105 in Surigao City headed by Satar T. Laguindab, and Revenue District 106 in Tandag, Surigao del Sur headed by Marcelino Yap.

"Compared to last year’s collection record of P1,401,845,034.50, our collections this year has increased by P218,889,736.37 or 15.619 percent more compared to last year’s collections," Amerol said.

Citing the region’s four-year annual tax collection performance report, Amerol said "the history of this revenue region covering the area composed of four provinces and three cities showed that for the last four years (2003-2004, 2005 and 2006) the region was able to consistently over-shoot its assigned goal and exceed its actual collections of the previews year."

The report showed a consistent yearly increase against its collection goals as follows: 2003, 10.01 percent; 2004, 10.67 percent; 2005, 13.27 percent; and 2006, 15.61 percent.

Moreover, Amerol said that, amidst the political and economic crisis besetting Caraga, the region "silently yet efficiently performed its task of collecting taxes for the government in line with the President’s agenda on increasing tax collections."

Amerol also said that even the neophyte revenue district officer of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, surpassed their goal in 2006.

"District officers Radaza (Butuan City), Monteclaro (Bayugan), Laguindab (Surigao City) even Yap of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, attributed the substantial increase in Caraga’s tax collections for this year," Amerol said.

In an interview, Yap said he initiated meetings and dialogues with local taxpayers in Tandag who heeded his call. The top taxpayers of Tandag are Tony Ling, Florencio Garay, Johnny and Clarence Pimentel, Isagani Jimenez, Alvin Py, Donald and Amador Que, and Pablito and Paul Vicencio as Top Individual Taxpayers;

Sudecor, DepEd, DPWH, Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur, Cantilan Bank, Enterprise Bank of Lianga, and Petco Corporation as Top Corporate Income Taxpayers; Sudecor as Top VAT Taxpayer; and the City Government of Tandag as Top Withholding Government Agent.

"All of this formed part of the total collections for the year," Yap said, adding that the "achievement of the cumulative goal for the period was also the result of increase in collection by accredited agent banks, RDO-106 collection agents' exemplary performances and the positive response of practicing professionals."

hmmm...we heard those same comments when the 2nd bridge and by pass high way were just on their initial phases of construction.

Some say that it will take years (2008) for it to be finished, but now the bridge is ahead of schedule and is getting ready for the final works for its inauguration this year.

The Regional Government Center in Tiniwisan was also humored to be left unfinished... now the first phase is almost complete.

pessimisms :)

Dredging the river? yup... since 1998, narining ko na yun. pero until now wala pa rin.. sana ma simulan na ang project nito sa lalong madaling panahon... it can also lessen the risk of the river to overflow..... nabalitaan ko, mababaw kasi ang mouth ng river... dahilan din nun ay yung spanish american war, am i right? butuanons and spaniards put large stones and boulders at the mouth of the river to block the river para di na makapasok ang mra barko ng amerikano.... diba?

dredging the river to its mouth in Butuan Bay would entail milions of pesos.

part of the final phase of the LADP is to dredge the river to its mouth to increase its outflow volume.

Hopefully too, that dredge work will also restore the viability of the river for medium interisland passenger vessels. Right now the port there in Bading New Asia is serve by Escano Lines for their cargoes to Leyte and Cebu City; there is also cargo boats by petron and some oil mill company in the area.

Regarding that historical theory that ancient Butuanons used to put boulders at the river mouth, needs further verification as the river mouth is so wide, hence it would take them years to fill it

Sto. Niño festivals on today
Child Jesus a favorite in many parts of the country

By CHRISTINA I. HERMOSO & LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO

Aklan, Cebu, Tondo are centers of festivities

All over the country today, the Catholic Church and devotees of the Santo Niño celebrate the Feast of the Child Jesus, with masses, novenas, colorful processions, parades, exhibits, and other festive commemorative rites in His honor.

Festivities, elaborate rites, fiestas, and street dancing festivals will be held in many parts of the country where the whole month of January is devoted to the Holy Child, attracting hundreds of local and foreign tourists and devotees.

Cebu City will hold the oldest festival in the country called the "Sinulog" Festival, honoring the Holy Image of the Infant Jesus while Kalibo, Aklan will celebrate its "Ati-Atihan" Festival. Romblon will hold the "Biniray" Festival and Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, its "Zambulawan" Festival.

Other festivities in honor of the Child are Cagayan de Oro City’s "Pachada Señor," Butuan City’s "Kahimunan" Festival, Antique’s "Binirayan" and "Handugan" Festivals, and Iloilo City’s "Dinagyang" Festival.

The Feast of the Child Jesus will also be held in Pandacan and Tondo in Manila; Malolos, Bulacan; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Binalonan, Pangasinan, the Santo Niño de Praga at San Beda College on Sunday, Jan. 28, and other parts of the country.

Devotion to the Child Jesus is widespread and popular among Filipino Catholics who keep an image of the Santo Niño in their altars at home.

Church officials said the image of the Sto. Niño with a king’s crown "synthesizes the Kingship and the Childhood of Christ."

The small globe in His hands symbolizes that Christ is the "King of the Universe" who became a little child and who reminds us that "unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 18:34).

The Church also reminded devotees to reflect on the spiritual significance of the celebration.

The image of the Santo Niño was brought to the islands on April 14, 1521 by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan as a gift to Queen Juana of Cebu. The queen reportedly cried when she saw the 15inch- tall wooden statue of the Holy Child and allowed herself to be baptized as a Christian, along with her husband Rajah Humabon and more than 800 natives.

After Magellan was killed by Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan, not much was heard about the image, except that the Cebuanos worshipped the Santo Niño as a "rain god." In 1565, when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Spanish "conquistador" (conqueror) arrived in Cebu after 40 years , a Spanish soldier, Juan Camus, found the image inside the house of a native. His house was razed by fire that miraculously spared the Holy Image.

Legazpi named Cebu the "City of the Most Holy Name of Jesus."

Now known as the "Santo Niño de Cebu," the image is considered the oldest Christian relic in the country. It is enshrined and honored in the oldest church in the country, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu City.

In Manila, the center of the celebration is the Santo Niño de Tondo Parish in Tondo, Manila.

Although the actual feast day is today, the Tondo parish started its celebration as early as last week with different activities such as cultural presentations, variety shows, andothers. The "Lakbayaw" Festival also officially opened yesterday with street dancing, processions, and the pagoda or fluvial parade.

The faithful who failed to join yesterday’s procession are encouraged to join the 4:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. processions today.

To accommodate the many devotees who will troop to Tondo church, parish officials said masses will be held hourly starting last midnight until 11 p.m.

Fr. Erick Santos, Tondo parish priest, expressed hope this year’s celebration would be meaningful and peaceful among the faithful.

"It’s only here in the Philippines that we have this kind of devotion. It’s time that we give a deeper meaning to our devotion," Fr. Santos said.

DPWH to complete 2nd Magsaysay bridge this year :)
Monday, January 22 2007 @ 05:12 PM GMT

In four months time, residents in Butuan and Surigao City will soon be relieved from traffic woes as the Department of Public Works and Highways announced the near completion of the 2nd Magsaysay Bridge in Butuan City.

DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. said that upon completion of the project, the 2nd Magsaysay Bridge will be the main crossing across Agusan River to connect the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway or the Surigao-Agusan-Davao Road and the Butuan City-Cagayan-Iligan Road.

"Together with the bypass road, it will divert traffic passing through the core of Butuan City and ease the traffic congestion in the old Magsaysay Bridge," Ebdane said.

In his report to Ebdane, DPWH Philippine-Japan Highway Loan Project Director Vicente Perez said that they are now finishing the rectification works for the viaduct abutment no. 2 for embankment settlement and they are scheduled to complete the project in May, 2007.

"The Japanese technology was used to construct this earthquake proof bridge, which consists of 300 meters steel cable stayed main bridge with concrete tower and steel deck plate girder on steel pipe pile foundation," Perez added.

The project also includes the construction of Bypass Road that starts at Kilometer 1236 and ends at Kilometer 1247 and the 1.33 kilometers of Maguinda-Nieves Road and 2.90 kilometers of Bon-bon-Libertad Road.

This P2.2 billion bridge project is funded under the Japan International Cooperation and under the contract with Nippon Steel/TOA Corporation. (PNA)

P2.2-B Butuan bridge to open on April '07
By Ben Serrano
Correspondent

BUTUAN CITY -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Caraga Region announced that if plans won't fail, Butuan's P2.2 billion second bridge will be open to public comes second week of April 2007.

The construction of the P2.2 billion Butuan second bridge was funded through soft loan by the Philippine Government to the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

The need for the said bridge came as the weakening of the first bridge already posed danger due to the increased traffic volume through the years.

The first bridge, known as Magsaysay bridge, was built during the administration of then President Magsaysay and was completed in 1960.

DPWH Caraga Regional Director Romeo S. Momo told Sun.Star that upon completion, the second bridge will be the main access across Agusan River to connect the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway or the Agusan-Surigao Davao Road and the Butuan City-Iligan-Cagayan de Oro Highway.

Workers are now finishing the rectification of the viaduct abutment no. 2 for embankment settlement as they are scheduled to finish it by April, Momo said.

The new bridge used Japanese technology earthquake proof capabilities consisting of 300 meters steel cable stayed main bridge with concrete tower and steel plate girder on a steel pipe pile foundation.

The project also includes the construction of eleven kilometers bypass road, the 1.33 kilometers Maguinda-Las Nieves Road and the 2.9 kilometers Barangays Bonbon-Libertad, all in Butuan City.

The P2.2 billion second Butuan Bridge project is under the contract of Japanese firms Nippon Steel and TOA Construction.

"Practically, motorists from cities and provinces of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Surigao passing Butuan City will soon be relieved from traffic woes and enjoy the comfort of one of the longest bridge and one of its kind in Mindanao as it will be open to traffic by second week of April," Momo happily announced.

The new bridge is one of the pet flagship projects of the Arroyo Administration, according to Momo.

yup.. and if you're driving from butuan going to iligan, you have the option not to pass by the downtown using the East, south, and west diversion roads w/c form a circumferential system.. Too much of CDO talks...:D

BOB-bXu

hmm...that would spell speedy transport from our point here going westward there.

I can see the real picture. the parallel bridge in Tagoloan.....the by pass highway and new bridge in Butuan....that diversion road in CDO plus that planned Panguil bridge...are all geared for a faster northeast-northwest and vice versa transport by bypassing major population gridlocks.

could we see in the future a much integrated transpo system this part of Mindanao then?

B737 - 300 has only one emergency exit on each side... while the B734's, dalawa. B733 ang eroplano serving MNL - BXU route kasi isa lang ang emergency exit nya each side. PAL uses B733 since, uhm lumipat kami sa Butuan... 1995 or 96.

About Balanghai airlines, i think okay naman kasi it is an icon for Butuan city.

PAL uses BAC 1-11s sa una then they shifted to B737-200s (the one being used by Air Phil ngayon) then they shifted to B737-300. Then last year ata pag upgrade sa Cebu Pacific, nag B737-400 na sila.

Where Are Travelers Heading In 2007?

By Katherine Tom, Senior Editor, Yahoo! Travel
December 20, 2006
Curious where travelers are headed in the coming year? We took a look at the most popular searches on Yahoo! FareChase to see which cities folks are flocking to in 2007. On the domestic list, perennial travel favorite Las Vegas shows no signs of ceding the top spot, while sunny Florida dominates the rest of the list, with five out of the top 10 searches.

We did note a few surprises on the international list, including the appearance of Frankfurt and Manila in the top 5. Visitors rave about Frankfurt's shopping and architecture, while Manila attracts budget travelers looking for beaches and nightlife. Of course, more traditional travel destinations like Paris and Rome made the list as well, placing at 7th and 8th respectively.
Frankfurt, Germany

WawaY[625]
January 27th, 2007, 07:22 AM
they do..minsan din B747-400 ginagamit nila :) pero sa official sched, A330 lang ang ginagamit.

this happens pag peak season or pag may nasira na plane like the time na nasira yung plane pa Palawan, tapos yun A330 na dapat pa davao ginamit sa palawan and kami nalipat sa 747..pero pangit man, daan na man gud, mas nindot ang interiors sa A330..

anyway, how is nasipit part of butuan? kay ma remember nako the last time i went to butuan (mga 1988 pa ata to) nag bus mi from davao to butuan tapos nagpa nasipit para sakay ug barko pa cebu for my cousin's wedding

BOB-bXu
January 27th, 2007, 08:54 AM
dugay na diay ka wala ka anhi dire way..

but thats good at least you have seen this part of Mindanao.

Nasipit port has just completed its wharf extension I think last year. But I think apeke pa ang space when 3 superferries are joined at end to end.

the road from Davao to Butuan is getting much attention kase more feverish ang rehab ng samsung at Daewoo Engineers. from Nabunturan to Agusan, you can see widened roads along poblacions in Agusan del Sur. Once mahuman ang rehab, which I think is now 95% complete, will further increse Nasipit's cargo and passenger discharge volume coming in from ComVal and Davao del Norte enroute for Visayas.

Aduna pod hiway na i-construct between Caraga and Davao Region. This time Between Davao and Surigao via Davao Oriental, Comval and Surigao Sur.

That would make our two regions well connected by TWO major highways. One centraly by Pan Phil Hi way (95% complete) and the SUDOPARIM Higway.

Hehe.. Ang quality ra na sa photo bai... pero actually, this is the princess of the ocean, right? It was awarded as the most cleanest vessel in the philippines noong 2006.

Yep. Im not a native Butuanon. and di ko talaga alam kung san ako native... I was born in Manila, grew up there, then Saudi then Manila, then Butuan, then Cebu. parang 5 to 6 years ata ang stay ko every location. Tapos my mom's parents were from Iloilo, while my dad's were from Ilocos..

So bakit nasa Butuan kami ngayon? hehe di ko alam. hehe

You have to promote Butuan bai. I know many Butuanons mag ingon "unsa man i promote nga wa man intawon makit an dire"... They're right.. ana ako tan aw before. But when i saw the rich history and culture of Butuan, I see that Butuan has the potential of becoming a great city. Too bad many Butuanons don't know the City's history.

I think mao ni ang tan aw most butuanons:

Golden Tara - a golden image nga nakit an sa agusan river
(wala sila kabalo asa gikan, ngano naa ta ana)

Balanghai - one of the oldest boats in Asia
(pero wa sila kabalo pila ang na recover. wa sila nag wonder ngano nasa libertad nakit an nga layo man intawon na sa sea or river)

Fr. Urios - founder of Urios College (now Fr. Saturnino Urios University)
(pero wa sila kabalo nga giunsa pag strive ni Fr. Urios pag protect sa school, Butuan and Agusan. They dont even know na nakabuhat miracle si Fr. Urios sa agusan river...)

Agusan River - most navigable river in Mindanao
(aside sa magdala siya baha sa ciudad, most butuanon didnt know the rich culture na imo makita when u will take a ferry boat from th city to magallanes. Igo lang sila musakay, thne hulat maka abot..)

Mt. Mayapay - landmark of Butuan
(but kabalo ba sila ngano Mayapay ang tawag? even ako, wala)

and iba pa... see? hehe... if only the city government will educate the people about historic Butuan, then the city will prosper. protect and save the culture of Butuan.

Dakbayan sa Butuan. Ato ini... Kadyawon 'ta!!!

Dinagat Island; newest province in Caraga

The Commission of Election (Comelec) held a plebiscite for the creation of Dinagat Island into a province last December 2, 2006 on Surigao del Norte. Of the 130,000+ people who voted, the “Yes” vote garnered a total of 69,943 votes while “No” got only 63,502.

The 130,000 who voted however is only 45 percent of the total 297,959 registered voters in the entire Surigao del Norte. That was the lowest in the history of political exercise in the province surprising even the Comelec officials but others attributed this to a poor information campaign in the grass roots.

Ayaw kalimti. Jameslab8470 pagka mayor karong mayo.
ug ang akong bise mayor Bob - BXU
ug ang atong konsehal....

HAHAHA!

This is an inspiring civic spirit from our young.

You will not be the last youth who shall be inspired by Butuan's ancient culture and colorful history.

The city has been emboldened with this historical facts to bring it into as the centerpiece of archeo-tourism.

Th city have had a steady increase in the influx of tourists both foreign and domestic as are evident with the growing number of hotels resorts, motels and inns in the city. You cannot see any hotel nowadays closing its doors, unlike the great Asian Crisis in 1997.

The Meetings Conventions Seminars and Exhibitions (MICE) had a significant growth with the number of regional, Mindanao- wide, and national conventions and seminars being held in the city. You can see the rise of such facilities with 1500 seat airconditioned conventions halls like that of Almont Inland or 1000 seat convention facilities of Balanghai Hotel and that of Dotties Place.

There are also a growth of authentic native restaurants that cater to travellers and locals alike witha passion for ethnic cuisine, side by side with the entry of world renowned fastfood franchises.

However, much as these changes have become evident, still much more are needed to be done.

People like the rest of you in this Butuan Thread shall be our unsung heroes in the promotion of Butuan tourism in the world wide web.

Pero still, if i will launch the site, we have to advertise it... Local muna ang target. make shirts siguro or stickers.... Plano ko nga na maglagay ako sticker sa car namin jan sa butuan.. at least free advertising...

After that, ang mga local tourists, then foreigners... dont know pa kung ano ang magandang ad strategy.

Good afternoon guys...its a very sunny day at this time in BXU...

There are a bit of white clouds hovering the downtown area, buts its quiet clear mostly hear at Doongan.

Its hot over the city streets, a bit dusty though caused by that freaking ground works of BCWD over JC Aquino.

The old downtown is clogged ( as usual) by those parked vehicles.. the whole Ester Luna, San Jose, and Marcos Calo are being used (over used) by private car owners for parking. This usually happens during daytime where you hardly find a parking space, and worst those Libertad and Bancasi bound jeeps just stop and load and unload passengers at the middle of G Flores or at the narrow Ester Luna St.

Mga traffic aide pod dili kamao mubantay, seems afraid of the heat. They must have applied whitening liniment sa ila nawong kay mahadlok man ug init :ohno: giahak

There' a problem sad promoting tourism in Butuan. we ordinary citizens can't just take photos sa mga artifacts. sayang... kung mag post2x ta dire photos and other sites, sure we can promote Butuan directly... MAO na ang problem. only the city government can promote the city to the world. But are they doing it? i think not. nagpatambok lang sila sa ila mga lingkuranan. We cna promote Butuan pro dili sapat mag post lang ta message and articles. kulang.. foreigners want photos, right? kapuyan an sila mag basa2x.

Akong tan aw gani, kita lang ang major city na wala pay koreans mag suroy2x sa main streets. hehe

the areas around Butuan, CARAGA region abounds with exotic not-commonly-mentioned, not-so-usual hyped resorts..

they are 'remote' hence exotic, ....but they are just near..

just hop-in to any Butuan bound plane from Manila and youre just 1 hour and half away from these exotic destinations....

IMHO a common problem to places in the countryside

BOB-bXu
January 30th, 2007, 02:29 PM
yes. this boils down to the chronic problem of the government of not recognizing the full potential of tourism as one of the big things that can turn things around

talking about the budget, where does the budget usually go?...where else
but the usual places..

this country of 1100 isles...of thousands of kilometers of coasts and of several thousand feet of mountain ranges....must continously seek and develop newer exciting tourism destinations other than the usual Luneta, Intramuros or the likes of Boracay and Mactan

this has been the problem if that beautiful spot belongs to Mindanao, where the stigma seems to stick like a disease we are unable to purge out.

Yup. to the usual places... let me enumerate some of them...

the 2ND MAGSAYSAY BRIDGE
.... 30% of the total budget, napunta sa bulsa ni _ _ _ _ _...

the TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM
.... out of 11 intersections (proposed by the city government), only 7 were materialised

and this one... it might be surprising...

Butuan is one of the top 10 cities in vis - min region na may malalaking tax revenues. Most of them were from the OFW's.

Parang out of the topic na ako ha.. hehe... Naiinis lang talaga ako sa City hall... maganda pa naman sana ang bulding.. pero okay ba ang paglilingkod nila? :ohno:

Your opinions are as valid just as anyone else, but this thread has no political color. Nor a means to cast doubt of the veracity of any persson nor to any political group.

You may want to try other Butuan content discussion forums and threads where your concerns and opinions of this nature are much needed.

one point lang that I would like to raise with these sensitive statements;
I think it was incorrect to say that kinhanglan pa mangutang ang city government para sa 'feeding program' or agri seminars, sounds absurd and katawa-tawa ata.

What I am sure of is that there are big projects out there being built na ang pondo gikan sa ODA or Japanese fund na gi loan sa national government with some counterpart sa local level.

Wala man siguro dagko nga mga project na dili gi loan sa funding institutions be it local or foreign IN ANY CITY dire sa Pilipinas.

I dont think it would be insane for any Philippine city to wholly use its pondo for its big flagship programs without any financial loan or asistance from the national level or overseas financial sources.

The local government likewise does not tax OFWs.

This is my opinion

Hello Gentlemen,

I decided to join this great site after lurking for a couple of weeks. What is my connection to Butuan City you might ask? I met a wonderful lady back in 2003 and visited your great city in March 2005. This young lady is now my wife and living with me in North Carolina, USA.

Guys, I really love this forumn and the pictures. It brings back fond memories of my two week visit there. My wife is from RTR. I am sure most of you guys know where that is. It is North of Butuan City across the bridge. It is nice to see that you guys will have a new bridge completed here shortly. I love the pictures. My wife is pretty excited about her hometown doing better as well.

I will let you guys know soon what I think about your city and my experiences there. I would elaborate more but it is getting close to my bedtime and I have a long day at work tomorrow. I am sorry that I don't speak your dialect and my wife tells me she is too busy to translate for me.:ohno: Well my wife is working both a full time job and a part time job so it is true she doesn't have much time to translate.:)

I think the countryside particularly here in CARAGA Region has a lot of potentials as far as torism is concerned.

I think also that this is the only region in Mindanao where most of its airports are served by commercial aviation.

In Surigao del Sur, its airport in Tandag is served by SeAir with flights between Cebu, while the airport in Siargao is served by SeAir and I believed also Asian Spirit.; also in Surigao City with connections with Manila via Asian Spirit and of course the regional trunkline airport in Butuan served by PAL and Cebu Pacific

Nice terminal. Pero minsan wala maxado jeep. e kasi naman, ang mga jeepney drivers, kahit saan nalang nag paparking. ginagawa na nila terminal ang ibang sulok sa Butuan...

Gaisano Area - Buenavista, Nasipit and Carmen

Otis Barrio (centro) - Cabadbaran and RTR

Pati ang mga vHire, kahit saan na rin... na dapat dun sila sa Otis Mall ang terminal nila:

Gaisano, Lynzee's Area
Carl Patrick's, near Santos Hospital
Urios Gym

Hehe... Ang mga enforcers naman, binalewala lang nila ang mga 'to. Wala discipline. sayang. hehe.. Dapat they should follow rules para maging organized ang dating

WaaaaaaaaaaHHH! I miss the DC-9's already. Palagi nga 'to makita sa amo balay... Malapit lang kasi kami sa Airport... Libertad kasi kami... Kahit medyo maingay ang mga eroplano, okay lang.. I LOVE PLANES. hehe. Too bad d ko nakunan ang DC 9 ng 5J.
