View Full Version : Key Highway in South Baltimore development
nyawira January 28th, 2008, 08:45 PM Can someone PULEEZE tell me what they have planned for the area right next to the BP station on Key Highway in south Baltimore. I understand they are putting a more upscale grocery store in that site, but I can't find which one. I was hoping it would be a Whole Foods or Trader Joes, but I don't think so. I want organic meat! Anyone have any knowledge of what shops will be there.

Hood January 29th, 2008, 05:29 PM Funny. I never thought about the site being next to BP, but it really is if you are on Key highway. I didn't realize how close the buldings are going to be to Key highway. Hope it looks nice.

That's like the fifteenth time you've posted that link, and consequently the fifteenth time I've clicked on it and read it, but this is the first time I've made note of the likely tenants - Starbucks, Panera, CVS, Walgreens? Could it be any more generic? Hopefully they'll get a little more unique with the grocer and restaurants; Clyde's and Green Turtle wouldn't be so bad. At least they're not looking for an Olive Garden.
Living in Miami for the past six years, I can tell you that when you put a Panera and a Starbucks in the same shopping center, you better be ready for a madhouse.

I am always surprised that you live in Miami but are so well versed about development in Baltimore.
Do you comment as much on Miami on other boards? I know there is a ton of development going on in Miami.

This forum's a lot like a Celtic knot ... it doubles back on itself again and again as new folks sign on and ask questions. Eventually the picture becomes clear.
Definitely a generic selection, but it's not final so we can always hope.

I comment now and again in the Miami forum, but I guess since I live here, it's easier to keep up with the development just by going outside than it is to read the forum.
Personally, I find Baltimore's development more interesting than Miami's, even though it may not be as grandiose at the moment. With Baltimore, it's cool to see how different developments will affect the city because the neighborhoods are so well-established. With Miami, everything is brand new, which can be really interesting, but sometimes I get disappointed because you see all these 700 foot towers going up, and yet the streets are still empty. Downtown is just as empty now as it was when I arrived in 2002 because very few of the new condos are home to year-round residents (something like 15%). Miami Beach is a different story though, and I do keep abreast of those projects, although they are much fewer in number.
Baltimore is my home though, so it's where my interests lie, and I do return several times a year, so I do get a chance to see the progress first-hand. But in the meantime, I have a group of maybe twenty or thirty guys (and one girl) on this forum to quench my thirst for updates and pictures.
Also, I plan to return to Baltimore for good in about fifteen months when I graduate, so I try to keep a close eye on the housing market.
EDIT: Actually, I can't say I plan to return "for good." A piece of my heart still lives in Barcelona.
TheGlobalizer January 29th, 2008, 08:14 PM FWIW, I think Baltimore could use a bit more of the generic. It means the big chains see value here.
It's a good thing, as long as it doesn't make swaths of the city look like suburban strip malls.
jamie_hunt January 30th, 2008, 07:31 PM ^^ I have a wicked addiction to Panera, so I'm not complaining. Starbucks, not so much. Donna's is fine.
This looks like the kind of place where you can park the car, do yer grocery shopping, drop off the dry cleaning, have somebody look at your computer, get a prescription filled, hit the bank, and have a java or quick lunch. Then catch the elevator to your apartment, which'll have a nice layout and decent natural light, but there'll be nothing particularly noteworthy about the view.
Hood January 31st, 2008, 01:23 PM I have no objection to panera. Its affordable, quick and not bad for you food like other fast food. Plus, another walkable strip mall would be wonderful in our neighborhood. especially with a second baby on the way. I know my wife is going stir crazy when she texted me 2 afternoons ago "W r going 2 shoppers and then 2 radio shack 2 get out of house" Can't wait for this new development.
