No. It will remain a primarily athletics stadium, with some soccer matches also held there (though Delhi has another primary soccer stadium, so this is only sparingly used for the purpose).

The Dhyan Chand Stadium, the hockey venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was built as the main stadium for the 1st Asian Games in 1951. It was renamed for Dhyan Chand in 2002. The main pitch has a capacity of 30,000 and the secondary pitch seats 2,500. A new warm up field will be built and the main stadium will be renovated.

Yeah sure. I'm not questioning they did it together (like most stadiums), but just didn't actually find it..

Anyhow- the pitch is dramatically far from the running tack and pitch, while the stands appear to be really flat- looks Brazilian to me ;) (except this one is less circular, more an elipse)

Uhmmm... aquatics venues, stadia -- they're all pretty much the same. :ohno: You have the pool(s) and the infields -- and then you have the audience stands on the sides. That's it.

The trick is getting the sightline angles right, of course, all the bells and whistles, and the outside design.

But at heart, a rose is a rose is a rose!!

I can already tell that this stadium is apparently starting to shape up. Now they have to built the roof and the structure that holds it up, and install the seating. They're already in the process of improving the track and the field because there were some shrubs and weeds growing in the stadium. There shouldn't be any weeds and shrubs in ANY stadium.

I don't know why the Indira Gandhi Indoor Arena has too few rows for a 25,000 capacity, but once the individual seating is installed, the arena's capacity won't even be close to 21,000. It might as well contain about 15,000 persons.

I was thinking not because the configuration for a cricket stadium is going to be different. It's probably going to continue being a venue for more track and field events, maybe some concerts and political rallies as well.

Games-Indian Commonwealth Games venues way behind schedule

NEW DELHI, July 2 (Reuters) - India's government painted a stark picture on Thursday of construction delays for the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, saying more than half the work needed to be completed in 12 of the 17 projects.

A statement in parliament by the junior sports minister reflected a race against time for the Oct. 3-14 games next year, which has faced delays from the planning stage and then cost increases due to the rise in prices of steel, cement and labour.

Listing the percentage of work completed at each venue until last Thursday, the minister Pratik Prakashbapu Patil however expressed confidence the venues would be ready before the games.

The athletics venue in the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium complex and the games village are only half completed while a meagre seven percent work was finished in the archery arena.

Federal sports minister Manohar Singh Gill raised concerns last month over the tardy progress of work. The organisers also plan security on a par with last year's Beijing Olympics.

Organisers said last month that higher construction costs would force the games to go 6-8 percent over the planned $1.6 billion budget.

The Delhi government allotted an extra 9 billion rupees ($187.5 million) in its annual budget on June 22. Construction delays forced the Aug. 10 to 16 world badminton championships to be moved to Hyderabad.

India business reporter Shilpa Kannan asks if India will be ready for the Games following concerns they would have to shift to other venues or even another country.

It looks larger because a lot of London's is below the ground level, dug into the ground. Therefore, what you'll see walking along the Olympic park won't be as tall as most 80,000 seat stadiums.

Theres a lot more media activism on the ground regarding the projects that are behind schedule in New Delhi, and the fact is that many seem to be. However, I feel that at this time next year, most of the projects will be ready.

The Games Village is going full steam ahead because the courts in India have cleared the environmental objections that were brought on it, and the government has decided to fill the viability gap for construction.

The Metro is going full speed ahead, but now there are concerns that in its desire to meet deadlines, it has started to cut corners in construction and safety, and already there have been multiple accidents and deaths at construction sites.

I think the stadiums should be complete by next year. There is another picture I posted of the Thyagraj multi-purpose Indoor Stadium that will host netball.

Sports: Australia backs Delhi to beat Commonwealth Games delays
15 October 2009
AFP

Australia has backed New Delhi to pull off a successful Commonwealth Games next year despite warnings it is dangerously behind schedule and fears over a possible extremist attack.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, who toured the hockey and swimming venues during a visit to Delhi, brushed off concerns over the preparations aired by the Games' president this week.

"These comments are always made in the run-up to any Commonwealth Games, any Olympic Games," Smith told journalists on Wednesday, according to a transcript released here.

"The same was said of Melbourne, in the run-up to the Melbourne Commonwealth Games (in 2006), the same was said at Sydney in the run-up to the Sydney Olympic Games (in 2000).

"These things are always said and in the end you always find that the facilities are ready for the Commonwealth Games or the Olympic Games."

Smith was speaking after Michael Fennell, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said Delhi was facing an "enormous challenge" to be ready by October next year.

The foreign minister admitted Australia had concerns over security after a three-day siege by a small group of Muslim militants left 166 people dead in cosmopolitan Mumbai last November.

But he said any decision to boycott the Games on safety grounds would have to be made by Australia's sporting federations.

"We always have to be wary of terrorist activities and we are conscious of that as is India," Smith said.

"Whether an Australian team comes in the course of that will ultimately fall to the individual sporting authority and the Australian sporting organizations."

Australia's Commonwealth Games chief Perry Crosswhite earlier refused to guarantee safety in New Delhi and said athletes would have to decide themselves whether to compete or pull out.

Media have reported that Melbourne has made preparations to step in as emergency organiser if Delhi cannot build its transport and sporting infrastructure in time.

The Commonwealth Games, the biggest multi-sport event to be staged in India since the Asian Games in 1982, will feature 71 nations and territories mainly from the former British empire.

India, which has enjoyed a decade of rapid economic growth, hopes the event will promote a modern image of the country, though about one in four of its 1.2 billion people still live below the poverty line.

will it be connected by metro??

Yep,
All the venues will be connected by the Metro. Some already connected.
Infact, anyone can come out of the plane and ride on the metro all the way from IGI Airport to all the venues.

Actually, when the bid was made in 2003, there was an option of building a new 75K Stadium at Kalindi Kunj with a budget to Rs. 160 Cr (USD 32 Million).
Since it was felt the renovation would more or less cost the same as constructing a new stadium elsewhere.
But due to all unkonwn reasons as has been the case thus far w.r.t. construction updates, the Commitee did not go ahead with this plan.

As some of you guys had said, the track seems far from the stands, well after completion they may look little closer. But, the IOA could have put their brains to work for an instance and tried the following:
JLN has hosted Cricket Matches 1983 (vs Pak) & 1991 (vs SA)
Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI wants its own Stadium with 75 to 80K. They were in the look out Delhi with initial plans of Delhi being the 2011 WC Final venue.
IOA could have leased the JLN to BCCI for 30 yrs for say USD 30 to 40 Million and use that money to construct the new stadium by pursuing with the State, Central Govts and Civic agencies at Kalindi Kunj or any other proper location.

The following could have been the positives out of it:
i. Enormous cost saving
ii. A Main Athletic/Football stadium which is spectator friendly with closer views
iii. BCCI having another gr8 stadium in its kitty. Belive me the FSK Cricket Stadium in Delhi is pathetic even after the USD 15 Million makeover.

What odds can you get that Delhi will not be ready and where will they stage the games instead?

Maybe they will need to stage it in 2011.

Got to say, I am not really surprised. A lot of the business I work with is over in India and basically if you want something done you need to hold a blow torch to their feet to get them to do anything. To get them to make a decision, well that just does not compute.

Luckily for India noone watches the Commonwealth Games anymore so it will go unnoticed.

Must be said, the stadium is absolutely massive, and the stands look almost doubly further away from what would be the pitch than most athletics stadiums.

No wonder they're behind on building it.

That's by no means certain, and besides which, the English CWGF have issued a denial.

Anyway, this thread is about the stadium, not the Games or the stories behind them. I think there's already a Skybar topic on England's participation in these Games, so it doesn't need to overspill into this thread. :)

Well, the London Olympic stadium which has two more years left for its completion, is in the same state as this stadium. Also London stadium is being built completely new, where as our stadium is just being renovated..... With just six or seven months left for the games, before which the trial games should be conducted, i doubt if it would be completed on time......

humn...roof fabric has already reached delhi...will be up in a months time....Flood Light blocks are inside the stadium all equipped ,will too be up as and when the roof is up..hence, it will be a completely different picture in 2 months time from now.

Interior work and Exterior work is going on simultaneously. the work there is going in on at a war pace so hopefully the stadium will be up and running by August...this is my review ....

if you ask me overall completion % of the work @ JLN, New Delhi....

i would say 70%.

yeah....there's a underground..change rooms for all athletes and a tunnel which connects it to the main field..

however, frankly speaking the distance between the first row and the track isn't that much as you all are assuming it to be.

Now......there's something very interesting coming up on the roof ring....can clearly see it from my place...don't know whats it actually but will put up the pics of it soon...

At this rate London will have its stadium before Delhi and the Olympics are still 2 years away!

In addition the tubular steel work for the roof supports looks far more elegant than the Dehli effort which has a very uneven feel about it, much like alot of the stadium architecture in India, its of poor quality in International terms.

Games-Delhi's citizens told to brush up on etiquette

NEW DELHI, March 19 (Reuters) - India has compiled a list of do's and don'ts for its citzens at this year's Commonwealth Games to help showcase New Delhi's charms.

"We want to tell them don't urinate in public, don't spit, keep your houses and shops clean, keep public transport safe and such things," Delhi tourism chief Rina Ray told the Hindustan Times on Friday.

"This will tell every Delhiite that instead of being on the sidelines as a spectator, he or she can contribute to a better games."

New Delhi is preparing to host more than 100,000 foreign visitors during the Oct. 3-14 event and the Indian capital hopes to use to games to show itself off as a truly global city.

"We don't want to start (the campaign) too early lest it fizzles out," Ray said.

The tips on good manners will be spread to through billboards, pamphlets, websites and audiovisual means in the coming months, Hindustan Times reported.

"We want to change Delhi's public culture, their behaviour towards each other and to guests...so that they are courteous," Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said at the Delhi Tourism Conclave on Thursday, the paper reported.

"We want tourists to go back with the impression that Delhi is a sophisticated city."

Today we have received the full report from Indian Rockstars in the Commonwealth Games forum. Pictures of the almost completely refurbished stadium will be delivered this Sunday.

THE WHOLE STADIUM WAS LITTED TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME:banana:

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Wow....guys i was standing inside the JLN Arena today with all the LIGHTS on....and it was amazingly awesome....loved it ....what a stadium...!!!

The stadium is HUGE...infact its MASSIVE...this GIANT is shaping up very very fast... ,

Now, some info...

1. Seats were being put up ....
Number of seats: 72,000
Name of Company: Swadeshi corporation( Bucket Seats)
Color of seats: Dark Blue & Light Blue MIX

2. Lighting of the stadium
Brief: To light up this massive massive stadium it was necessary to design the lighting system carefully & it was done very tastefully and beautifully ...along with the Light towers the whole stadium circle has been fitted with individual lights .....giving it a beautiful touch.

3. Landscaping
Thats the only sad part in my report..!!! Zero landscaping done so far...street lights were being put up and JCB's all over the place...the engineer over there assured on time completion of landscaping...

4. Roof :
Done & Over...thats tactually looked to be the best thing inside the stadium...

5. Interiors:
Stainless steel is being used for all railing work ..its feels solid and well made...Thumbs up

VIP area gets Cinema comfort Seats , Air Conditioned glass section.

Tunnel work was completed , the ground leveling is COMPLETED...tracks were inside the stadium will start with that particular work next month...( As it takes just a month to be laid fully).

Paint work was going on ...the steel part...

Stairs are getting dressed with granite ....Orange color ramps( As seen before)

its actually looking good from outside as well....

ALL IZZ WELL

The stadium is now an all-seater with a capacity around 72k. Once we get somebody to count all of the seats within the stadium, we'll know what the real capacity is.

The best stadium in India. I love the blue seats. If I'm not mistaken it is the largest all seater in India, since Yuva Bharati Krirangan and Eden Gardens have mostly benches. Will the other two be renovated? I guess it can jump at second place then. Now that I noticed it, there seems to be no place left for a screen. Usually they either disrupt a tier, or hang it form the roof.

Eden Gardens will be renovated by 2011 for WC and will also be an all seater with a capacity of 90,000 and Yuva Bharati is only going through minor renovations and will not be fully renovated anytime soon. And yes its the largest all seater in India followed by DY Patil in Navi Mumbai(55,000)!

Chauhan, Lets not get religious. You were the first to take it on religious line. We may belong to different religions but Indians first. Origin of India definitely is based on Hinduism but now India is much more than Hinduism despite 80% of population being Hindu. Saffron is the color India is identified with more so due to culture which might have its origins from Hindu religion. I live in US and I can say India is more secular and tolerant than any other country in the world including states.

>>>

Not wanting to turn this into London versus Dehli debate, however...

London's stadium doesn't have all it's seats installed, or the track, or the grass, or the exterior wrap, or the final fit, or the surrounding landscaping (and Dehli isn't designed to have a reduced capacity, if indeed that's ever needed in London)

They're two entirely different visions, although we're all entitiled to our own point of view and I respect that

That is a huge surface, I know theres some perspective issues, but there is a far margin past the jump lanes and then a low moat before getting to the lower level. I agree about a blue track, but the rest of it looks good.

Thats what I was thinking. The area looks even larger than the MCG, and that is considered a large Cricket field. When the 2006 athletics track was put in, there were seats taken out to fit it in.

Nice design of the stadium. Impressive :)

Skin of your teeth! Two months between completion and the event itself is really cutting it fine. And that's assuming all the internal fit out is done.

Hopefully the lack of any real test events won't prove to be a problem. :)

It looks about as wide as the MCG but far longer, getting around Waverley Park dimensions. Regardless, it is far larger than needed for Cricket, even the MCG is roped off on the ends during matches.. I was sceptical but the old stadium has really scrubbed up well.

what is typical indian in my statement,,isnt 60,000 +15,000=75,000,,or is it something else in your TYPICAL country,,???:lol:....if by the way you think i am TYPICAL indian,,then i am proud to be called by this,,atleast i am called typical indian..not some bana republic:banana::banana:..
you are a typical fucker

would you plz give us your source ? coz according the TOI news and CWG2010 official website, I found the number was 60K. and 15000 VIP seats seem too many and when I was watching the video taken inside the stadium, the vip area could be seen...but it seems not that number...

I thought one should make the announcement based on the fact not the meditation. a little bit responsibility is necessary for your words and behaviour, or if it was your joke , forgive me...

Meanwhile, the swanky 60,000-capacity JNS, venue for opening and closing ceremonies, and athletics events, was inaugurated (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/events-tournaments/commonwealth-games/top-stories/Nehru-Stadium-opens-but-swimmer-trips-on-loose-grill-in-Talkatora/articleshow/6225208.cms)
it is 75,000 the formula is 60,000+15,000
60000 for common public and 15000 for vips which delhi have plenty

Nice stadium. However, unlike other Indian stadiums used for cricket, soccer et al, I hope they chose aesthetics enhancing daylighter flood lights:

(quote: "... illuminate giant stadiums. Their longer bulb life, reduced amp draw, and whiter light help you see more ..." Although the link contains the automotive version of these flood lights.)

This would enhance the green in the field as opposed to seeing a yellow hue that uglies viewing pleasure.

Additionally some pictures posted earlier showed the stadium with ugly, old fashioned, metallic advertisement boards between the tiers. Pictures of other stadiums in India have advertisement billboards that both take away from the architectural aesthetics and the general aesthetics . I hope the event organizers are aware of this and utilize sleek electronic advertisement boards as in this link:

Looks good. I'm glad the CWG are being held 2 years before the Olympics because you can bet if it was the other way around, there would be millions of people foolishly accusing the Indians of plagiarizing the stadium.

By the way, why is the stadium so big? There seems to be massive amounts of gap between the track and the stands. I know this stadium won't be used for cricket because I remember reading something to that effect (and I do believe that there are already two international standard stadiums in New Delhi) so what was the reasoning behind this?

I remember how half a year ago there were so many moans and complaints that they are not going to finish the stadium on time...and so it seems they have very well done it (unless there are some major works going on that I did not notice in the pictures).

In my opinion, the stadium is very pleasant to look at
