Hi there,
I've created this thread to show you this wonderful city on the east cost of Sicily.
It is very close to the highest volcano in Europe (Mt. Etna) and it is one of the UNESCO site in the island. What's more, it is one of the most, if not the most, vibrant city in Southern Italy, very famous for its nightlife, and it has currently got a metropolitan area of more than 800.000 habitants.
This is the volcanic Catania (hope you will enjoy).

In 2 days it will start there, for 3 days, one of the 3 most important catholic feast in the world dedicated to Saint Agata, which is the statue covered by golds and diamonds on the pics.

I visited Catania for a day in May 2007 and loved it. I spent most of the time in the car so I was distracted from the true beauty of Catania by those crazy Italian drivers. I can't wait to go back because one day wasn't enough.

For some reason I felt like the area around the airport and southern Catania seemed kinda scary. The views from Mt. Etna were cool and I loved the town of Zafferana going up the mountain. :)

Yes one day is not enough for a city with so much history,nature and traditions.
U are right, the area close to the airport is were the council flats are, so it is not one of the best area of the city. Infact, the richer area is around the village u have mentioned.

Glad you like it, yes the city is cool and it's the only city in the world where you find building made with lava stone and marble.
Anyway, what you call mountain in the background is actually the highest active volcano in Europe, the Etna which is almost 3300 meters.:lol::lol:
