I just put in an order for a book called "Touring Shanghai". I saw it as an advertisement for the magazine "The Hong Kong China Tourism Press". Anyways, I was wondering if any of you guys have it and could tell me if its a good book, has a lot of modern pictures of Shanghai, etc.

Thanks.

I assume this was taken on the observation deck of Jinmao tower. It's too bad that the sky wasn't clear that day, otherwise more skyscrapers on the Puxi side can be seen. :(

Does anybody have pictures of this road in Shanghai? I've heard its a street with a lot of high-end retail stores, but I've never really seen pictures of it.

If you do have pictures, could you please post them here? Thank you!

你去网上找太平洋百货。。那里就应该是淮海路。。。

只有淮海中路是购物区。。东西不是。。。

淮海路原名霞飞路。。殖民时期是法租界。。以法国将军霞飞命名。。。

I went during nighttime too. My friends there took me to a German pub, quite interesting, they had a live show where Germans were playing instruments. After our 8th round things got a little fuzzy :)

But I do remember going to some shops before that and OMG, they had some really nice products with prices to match... :)

It is nice to see that some old buildings are preserved. But it is very regrettable that these old houses completely lost their previous function. I don't see much difference between Disney Land and Xintiandi, well Xintiandi is more upscale, that's it.

The last information I got was that they want to expand the whole concept up to Waitan (The Bund). I hope they won't turn the whole area into a gigantic Shanghai Style Disney Land, that would be very sad.

I was at TMSK (Taoming Shikao) just a few weeks ago and had a great dinner there. TMSK is the the restaurant on the last picture.

I've got a one night stop over in Shanghai next month on the way to Japan. I get there about 5pm and head the next morning. If there is one thing I could do/place I could go in Shanghai in this time what where do u recommend. I believe the Maglev is 6 or 7 minutes from Pu dong Airport to the centre of town, is this right?

The maglev doesn't go to the city centre. It goes to the outskirts of Pudong new town and you can transfer to the subway there. However, it doesn't run into the night so double-check when the last train leaves.

I just came back from Shanghai, here are some tips:

1.Take the Meglva for 7 minutes, transfer to city subway to
downtown HeNan rd station, (very easy transfer, same station)
whey you get out of the station, the famous bund is in frount of you,
the stunning Pudong landscape will shock you!!.
the night scense is amazing, a must see!

2. across the tunnel, pick TV tower or Jinmao tower, view the massive
old shanghai in the air.

3. after darkness comes, walk back to the old shanghai along Nanjing rd, the No.1 shopping street in china, it is a disney land feeling. the walk will lead you to People's square, another landmark of shanghai, you will be surrounded by sparkling scrapers. the feeling is a combination of NY and HK.

a few hrs visit, lifetime memory.

Wow! that's great advice, thanks very much, I've been to HK and New York and loved both so I'm imagining more wonderful sights. I don't speak any Chinese. Do young people speak English much there if I stop to ask for directions etc and are the signs at train stations etc also in English? Also, I like to try the speciality foods of a city. Is there anything which is especially good to eat in Shanghai? - preferably something which might be slightly easy on the western palate i.e. no pigs head or intestines etc.

Unfortunately not many people speak english, some young people speak limited english, i think they can help you with directions.

all station and street signs are Chinese-English, i suggest you get a map,
the Bund is called "Wai-Tan" in chinese, everybody knows it in shanghai.

as long as you get to wai-tan, all the landmarks are within walking distance.

as far as food, i don't know much about it, i grew up in the north, i don't like
shanghainess style. i heard "soup - bon" is very famouse.

also please be advised that shanghai is not HK and NY, it is still considered a third world city, i would suggest you do not talk to anyone who trys to sell you something or provide you with service, it could be a trap.

shanghai is an exciting city, i was so impressed by the futuristic Pudong
scrapers. I've been in HK, and i live in NY now, i still had a shocking feeling when i was in front of Pudong skyline. I'm sure shanghai won't disappoint you.

newjing's suggestions are great. I spent 4 days in Shanghai on a trip last year and I'd definately recommend the maglev, train to the bund, Oriental Pearl TV tower, Nanjing road, & People's suqare plan that newjing lays out.

My memory is that the Maglev train stops running at 5pm so that may be a problem for you but when I checked online someone said recently that they increased the time from 7-21:00. I am not sure how you can find out before you go unless someone in Shanghai can confirm for you.

As far as food you really can't go wrong. I don't have specific places to point out/tell you but we were able to walk around and walk into any number of places without any problems. Like most large cities with many tourists restaurants usually have photos of the food. I don't know what your budget is but you should search online for Shanghainese food and you can get plenty of options for popular local cuisine.

also please be advised that shanghai is not HK and NY, it is still considered a third world city, i would suggest you do not talk to anyone who trys to sell you something or provide you with service, it could be a trap.

Here I disagree strongly with newjing. Shanghai has not been a 'third world city' since the mid 19th century when its port was opened to the Western world. Yes there will be people trying to sell you things and services, but at no time did I feel unsafe and I feel that Shanghai is no more or less dangerous than Chicago (where I live) or any number of large cities where I have travelled.

Have a great trip!

newjing

I think you misunderstood my point. Shanghai is a very safe city compare to
NY, or Chicago. actually most chinese cities are pretty safe ( i wouldn't crown the title to shenzhen or guangzhou though.)

here i'm talking about the city's civilization level, it is far behind NY and HK, even though the infrastructures are world class level.

for example, the beggars drag turists's arm on the bund,(i watched for a long time, all day long), no police to stop them, if it was in the US, they would get arrested for harrasment. many turists got ripped off by those floating sales, even chinese people surfer the same.

many westerns never heard or experienced these in their own countries, that's why i made such a statement, i wish shanghai and china the best, but i know we still have a long way to go to catch up with the west.

卧薪尝胆。

It's true that people in China set more sophiscated traps trying to get money from others than the developped world, especially from white tourists. But it's easy to avoid. Like newjing said, don't follow anyone who say that they would give you any service or sell you anything.

However, l am not so sure about what newjing means by "civilization level" of SH being far behind that of NY and HK.

It's probably just a not so appropriate translation of "文明程度". Don't take it too seriously.

there's no more huaihai market leh ... heard they closed liao and they moved somewhere else (if xiangyang shichang that you mean)

its pretty safe.. well a lot of beggar and ofcoz people trying to trap you or just to rip you off . just make sure u dont follow them. no difference even you can speak mandarin, you'll encounter the very same experience.

oh take the boat in the river and see PuDong skyline maybe a good idea once you're in WaiTan(The Bund).

Last I heard the American backwaters aren't doing so well either. In fact, Chinese immigrants to the US usually settle in the wealthier coastal areas and a few major inland cities, because those are the only areas that will allow them an improved quality of life, hence justifying immigration.
