Hey guys, was at the substation today for watching short films, and noticed that the building opposite has already been sealed up. Not sure when I was last here, but that was the first time I met the Substation, then this corridor at this building was bustling with business.

After doing a search online, found that it is named Mayfair City Hotel. Now it is just a derelict building with stray cats roaming the back alley. Will post some pictures later this week.

Anyone know anything about the history of this building?

I'm shocked to see it under renovation too. Had always wanted to venture in. :(

Welcome to the forum, huoyun, and thank you for the photo! :)

The old Mayfair City Hotel looks like it has seen better days, but its handsomeness and dignity still shine.

I hope they will really just renovate it and not mess with that elegant facade! :angel1:

Beautiful building, with a lot of verticality. It could be renovated as a highrise hotel with the exterior facade left intact as a podium.

The proportions are interesting. Unique neo classical and art deco styles

I was told by the Char Kway Teow seller by the corner coffee shop some months back that the entire place had been put up for sale, and so the stall has been asked to move. Not sure what's in store, but remembering the lost of Eu Court just a few steps away makes me wonder...

It's a conserved building, wonder what was in there last time? Mayfair Hotel?
The building on the left with the motifs like Whitehouse in Maxwell is a modern building mimicking the old

I guess it will not be offices that is going to take its place. Something contemporary that combines old facade. A hotel, an instituition, a museum (MOMA) a shopping mall, a hostel, an entertainment area, a theatre, a playhouse.. anything that complements the entertainment and education district area...

Think they're combining both blocks of shophouses.

Found an old pic. The Art Deco building was much larger last time

We can see that the from the old picture, the buildings were indeed formed to formed a larger block of building. If only they could demolished and remodelled after the ancient building model, that would be interesting.
Is that area gazetted for conservation?
Why is it stated voluntary on the project info board?

I love this building. Its good to see that its going to be restored.
I think its re-use as a hotel would be quite appropriate given the shortage of hotels, and would help enliven Armenian Street by night.

A pic I'd taken:

Wow, cool, a populated version of the place. When did this hotel stop functioning, any idea?

Once it's turned into an office, all life will be lost. It's going to be just a dead shell

My pic was taken some time back in 2007 when the kopitiam was still there...but I'm not sure if the rooms above were still being used as a hotel.

I do agree that office use in this area is not realizing the full cultural potential of Armenian Street and the greater Museum Planning Area. Well, that also depends on what the ground floor is being used as.

The building is now hoarded up for its conversion.

Took pics of the renderings on the hoarding:

No...it's going to be an office. However it would be ideal for a hotel I think it's location is very suitable.
