sir rob April 24th, 2010, 11:53 AM for me the best when it comes to facilities would be asian hospital and medical center in alabang. just love everything there.
-That's your definition of "best" but every individual have their own and different definition. There should be a basis for comparison and not just merely our opinion.
sir rob April 24th, 2010, 12:34 PM Whichever hospital tops the list, the patients are always the winner. I just hope that we'll have enough manpower for these healthcare institutions.
-I can guarantee you that there's enough manpower and it is even over saturated already. As you can see, there are thousands who passed the board exams annually and only a few able to land a job in hospitals. Most probably half of it is in the other field of work.

sir rob April 26th, 2010, 11:47 PM TO BECOME medical tourism DESTINATION: Law-abiding hospitals boost Cebu's bid
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated February 12, 2010 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The compliance of hospitals in Cebu to Republic Act 6969, otherwise known as the “Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990,” may push the province to achieve its bid as premier medical tourism destination.
Pollutions Abatement Systems Specialists Inc., (PASSI) said that major hospitals, except for one large hospital in Cebu, are already treating their hazardous wastes through its Autoclave facility, the common treatment facility for health care wastes located in Inayawan, Pardo.
PASSI was established in order to provide Cebu the right facility to treat hazardous solid wastes specifically that it is positioning to attract international patients, or medical tourists.
According to PASSI president Jolito Pogoy, the hospitals’ compliance to the law, is also due to the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s active stance to urge hospitals and clinics to obey the law.
PASSI has been operating the autoclave treatment facility in Inayawan, this city, since 2005 and had been treating hazardous wastes from hospitals, funeral parlors, and other healthcare establishments.
-This is laudable and be a good thing yet there's always this what you called the weak link theory. What about the transport of this biohazards going to and from the treatment facility? How is it being handled? It is of the same importance as to eliminate them. If the transport is not good then we are still spreading the biohazards and it won't make any sense in the end.

MetroPac buys stake in Bacolod hospital
METRO Pacific Investments Corp. has acquired a controlling stake in the largest hospital in Negros Occidental, marking its fourth hospital acquisition and its first in the Visayas region.
Metro Pacific, which now claims to be the country’s largest hospital operator, is looking at up to two more purchases this year, an executive said yesterday.
“Metro Pacific signed [yesterday] a share purchase agreement with Torre Hermanos Agro-Industrial Enterprises, Inc. to acquire a 51% shareholding in Riverside Medical Center, Inc. (RMCI), the largest hospital in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental,” the firm said in a disclosure.
RMCI is also known as the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital in honor of its founder who started it as an eight-bed clinic in 1954.
It was later expanded by the family into a 336-bed level IV hospital with the following departments: obstetrics and gynecology, medicine, orthopedics, ear, nose, and throat, pediatrics, emergency medicine, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, imaging sciences, anesthesia, surgery and opthalmology, Metro Pacific said.
“I think [the latest purchase] makes us the largest hospital operator in the Philippines,” Augusto P. Palisoc, Jr., executive director and head of Metro Pacific’s hospital group, said in a phone interview.
“This investment represents a vital step in realizing Metro Pacific’s vision of creating the first nationwide chain of hospitals that will help deliver better quality health care services to our countrymen,” he said in the statement.
He added that the group bought RMCI at a “premium over book value.”
For the fiscal year ended May 31, 2009, RMCI reported consolidated revenues of P940 million, assets of P911 million, liabilities of P553 million, and equity of P358 million.
“We welcome Metro Pacific as a new shareholder in Riverside as it will provide Riverside access to the growing hospital network, management, and financial resources of the group,” said Riverside Chairman and President Hector L. Torre.
Mr. Palisoc said the group may acquire one or two more hospitals this year.
RMCI wholly owns Riverside College, Inc., a nursing school with 2,800 students.
Excluding RMCI, the hospital group of Metro Pacific has a capacity of more than 1,300 beds. The group is composed of the Makati Medical Center and Cardinal Santos Medical Center in Metro Manila, and the Davao Doctors Hospital in Davao City.
Early this year, Metro Pacific Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said the firm was looking at buying two to three hospitals this year, closing in on a target 5,000 beds to achieve economies of scale.
At end-2009, the health care network’s average occupancy rates went up to 70% from 68% the previous year.
The health care group accounted P174 million or 5% of Metro Pacific’s income last year. The group’s net income went up by half to P530 million, as revenues went up by a third to P5.52 billion.
Shares in Metro Pacific, whose profits ballooned to P2.3 billion last year from P526 million in 2008, were last traded at P3.10 each yesterday, down from P3.15 on Friday.
Metro Pacific is the Philippine unit of Hong Kong’s First Pacific Co.
Ltd., part owner of Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co.
Mediaquest Holdings, Inc., a unit of PLDT’s Beneficial Trust Fund, has a minority stake in BusinessWorld. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

davaoeagle August 13th, 2010, 03:04 AM DMC now officially named SPMC
Mindanao Daily Mirror
August 13, 2010
BY ANA THERESA F. BASILIO
On August 11 at 5:30 in the afternoon, the Davao Medical Center officially unveiled its new name which is now called Southern Philippines Medical Center located along Bajada in Davao City.
Despite some drizzle of rain, the program still continued like nothing happened while the hospital staff nurses and doctors with some special guests carried their umbrellas at the SPMC Outpatient Center. Thank God the rain did not stay any longer; it was like a shower of blessings from heaven.
It was actually a joyous and exciting celebration for everyone since last Wednesday night’s event marked the start of change that will be part of the history in unveiling the evolving and dynamic Southern Philippines Medical Center.
As what chief of hospital Dr. Leopoldo “Bong” Jumalon Vega have said, SPMC is in a transition of transformation to stay competitive in rendering quality services and responsive to the needs of the community.
Dr. Vega narrated that when it started in 1919, the Davao Public Hospital (former name of SPMC) previously located along J.P. Laurel Avenue has a 25-bed capacity. Until later in 1946, Davao Public Hospital changed its name to Davao General Hospital with 200-bed capacity shortly after World War II. In 1957, it grew into a 350-bed facility known as the Davao Regional Medical and Training Center under Republic Act 1859 dated June 22, 1957 which transferred to its present site in Bajada, Davao City. Fourteen years later, in 1971, it officially became the Davao Medical Center. In 1986, the 200-bed Davao Mental Hospital was officially incorporated to the Davao Medical Center as its Psychiatry Department. In 1992, the DMC main hospital was upgraded to 400 beds under R.A. 7210, thereby increasing the capacity to a total of 600 beds including the mental facility.
In the 13th Congress, Congressman Vince Garcia, as principal author, and Congressman Arthur Ping-goy, as co-author introduced House bill No. 2320 to change the name of Davao Medical Center to Southern Philippines Medical Center with an increase in bed capacity and appropriation.
Finally in November 2009, by virtue of R.A. 9792, Davao Medical Center became Southern Philippines Medical Center with a bed capacity of 1,200, the SPMC chief of hospital said.
Among those who witnessed this remarkable event of SPMC include Department of Health secretary Dr. Enrique T. Ona, Councilor and chairperson of the Committee on Health Dr. Bernard Al-ag who represented Mayor Sara Duterte, vice governor Mayo Almario, undersecretary Dr. David Lozada, assistant secretary Dr. Elmer Punzalan, assistant secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean Ubial, former congressman Vince Garcia, DOH director Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, DOH-CHD 11 regional director Dr. Teogenes Flores Baluma, Davao Regional Hospital chief Dr. Romulo Busuego, representatives of the different Congressional Districts, and some media personalities.
At the end of the program, several student nurses used confetti cannon while some were waving the white and red flags while on top of the SPMC building to welcome the new beginning of its premier hospital in Mindanao. To all the ever-energetic and faithfully committed management and staff of SPMC, congratulations!

A piece of Bacolod's historical milestones:
In June 1950 three guys namely, Dr. Jose Abueg, Dr. Leonardo Gallardo Sr. and Dr. Pablo Torre established the first private hospital of Bacolod City named THE DOCTORS' HOSPITAL. And thus founded also was the first DOCTORS HOSPITAL in the Philippines.

A 54-million package of modern hospital equipment plus a radiology room renovation were turned over last Monday to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital by a Japanese private corporation, the cost to be paid via a 50- 50 sharing in the revenues of the said equipment.
The package equipment consists of a brand new CT scan (page 1 foto) and X-ray machines. The NOPH also boosts of its first MRI equipment, the first in the province of Negros Oriental. This was made possible thru the socalled “legacy deals” by the late Gov Emilio Macias II, himself a surgeon by profession.
This has virtually elevated the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) as the prototype for public-private partnership in the healthcare industry after NOPH sealed the deal with HIMEX Corp., a Japanese medical distribution firm.
HIMEX Corp. partnered for the first time with Philippines Local Government Unit (LGU) hospitals for the supply of top-of-the-line medical machines – including CT scan, digital x-ray, and radioflouroscopy – in order to provide efficient, accessible, and affordable healthcare. The repair of NOPH’s radiology room was also shouldered by the corporation.
Although NOPH did not spend a single centavo for the machines and the radiology room, it will be sharing half of its revenues from the machines with HIMEX Corp., as agreed between both parties. “There is going to be a sharing of revenues. HIMEX will get a share from the revenues that the hospital will get from the machines,” Dr. Felix Sy, Provincial Health Officer, said. According to Dr. Sy, the usage of the machine’s services will have a “very minimal” fee based on their financial capability, which will then be classified by a social worker. “If they are charity cases, then it will be free for them as the government will shoulder their usage fees,” Sy said.
On the other hand, Rema Padilla-Ohno, HIMEX senior executive vice president, said that their venture with government hospitals in the country has something to do with the firm’s belief of their responsibility in the healthcare industry – to help create development projects. “We are helping the government fulfill its responsibility of rendering health services to the people, especially to the poor,” she said.
HIMEX, Corp. is a pioneer in tying-up with government hospitals. The corporation has ongoing partnerships with other government hospitals like Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (Manila), Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (Marikina City), and Our Lady of Porzunciola Hospital (Samar).
The project was an initiative of the late Gov. Emilio Macias II, who is also a doctor by profession.
Late Gov. Macias II approached HIMEX officials after learning of the firm’s partnership with hospitals in Manila. (With reports by Beverly Linao and Rachelle Nessia)

Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) is one of the most modern provincial hospitals in the country equipped with multimillion-peso state of the art medical equipment.
Located in the heart of Dumaguete, the NOPH boasts of a facility that is not usually found in provincial hospitals - a Diagnostic Center equipped with P53- million modern medical equipment such as dialysis facility, ct scan, mammography, mobile x-ray and a clinical blood analyzer, automated microbial detection system, coulter hematology analyzer, refrigerated centrifuge separator, and many others.
In June 2009, NOPH has signed a contract for its computerization. It has been implemented and now is in its transitional stage. It also has another state-of-the-art diagnostic machine, an MRI equipment, which is already functioning to both in-patient and out-patient, in early 2010 . With the new technology, NOPH's MRI patient has the privilege to consult a specialist from other hospitals in reading MRI results through the use of Teleradiology.

I believe Silliman Medical Center can now be considered as a world class hospital because of its partnership with St Luke's:
St. Luke's inks MOA with Silliman Medical Center
MANILA, Philippines - St. Luke’s Medical Center, the country’s premier medical institution, and the Silliman Medical Center have agreed to collaborate to provide world-class healthcare to their patients.
During the signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the two hospitals at the Silliman Medical Center in Dumaguete City last March 19, both hospitals agreed that the primary objective of the partnership is expertise development.
“This partnership is part of St. Luke’s National Medical Referral Program where the main objective is to enter into partnerships with tertiary medical institutions in the provinces,” said Dr. Joven Cuanang, chief medical officer and SVP for medical affairs of St. Luke’s Medical Center.
To further the exchange of knowledge, skills and expertise between St. Luke’s and Silliman, St. Luke’s will provide speakers for continuing medical education activities and joint conferences. Physicians from Silliman will also be invited to St. Luke’s-led international conferences.
Under the agreement, Silliman can refer highly specialized cases to St. Luke’s medical experts in the various fields of specialization. These referrals could mean the physical transfer of care from Silliman to St. Luke’s or case discussion through teleconferences.

Rall April 6th, 2011, 03:37 PM Davao Eye Center (http://www.ddh.com.ph/clinics-centers/eye-and-laser-center/)
The Davao Eye Center is the first Laser Center in Mindanao, established in 1991. The Center was created as a response to the region's growing need for highly accessible and cost-effective eye care. At Davao Eye Center, patients are assured that highly-trained and qualified Ophthalmologists treat patients, assisted by competent and caring nurses.
The Center provides a complete of eye diagnostic procedures and corresponding treatments. Its equipment arsenal, at par with international eye laser center includes: Yag Laser for non-invasive eye surgeries; the Argon Laser to stop progression of blindness of patients with diabetes, arterial or vein occlusion and glaucoma. The Iridex Occulite SLX Solid State Laser with Tri-Mode prevents blindness borne from eye diseases associated with age-related macular degeneration. The Iridex Occlite prevents glaucoma in patients with increased eye pressure, and eye diseases related to diabetes and Systematic Lupus Erythematosus. It is the first only unit in Mindanao.
Fluorescein Angiography, a major diagnostic procedure, is used for patients with diabetes and disease of the retina. The procedure involves the injection of a fluorescein dye allowing the Ophthalmologist to take an enhanced photograph of the patient’s fundus. The Octopus 101 Perimeter does visual field studies for glaucoma patients to check central and peripheral visions.
Patients requiring cataract surgery may also have their biometry at the Center for accurate eye measurements, and to determine the power of intraocular lens to be used during surgery.
Rall April 6th, 2011, 03:38 PM It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s AEROCOM! (http://www.ddh.com.ph/services-facilities/new-healthcare-solutions/aerocom/)
Hospitals continue to see the responsibilities of critical hospital personnel expand. They look to improve technology that has the capability to deliver hospital services without increasing staffing. The Pneumatic Tube System gives an immediate and measurable solution to this dilemma.
A wide variety of items can be transported with the Aerocom Pneumatic Tube System. Documents, reports, patient files, X-rays, pharmaceuticals, lab specimens, plasma, injection vials and instruments are just a few examples. The system connects the entire hospital. Emergency Rooms, Labs, blood bank, pharmacy, and all supporting areas will be linked together. The system’s sending and receiving stations are the perfect solution for busy hospital environments.
All over Asia, the demand for Pneumatic Tube Systems is exponentially increasing among hospitals to help solve their internal logistics problems. In the Philippines, a growing number of hospitals are utilizing Pneumatic Tube Systems.
Finally, another first in Mindanao, the Aerocom Pneumatic Tube Sytem can be seen zooming in and around Davao Doctors Hospital’s floors. Sending and receiving stations are installed at the following: (a) on the ground floor: the Laboratory, Emergency Room and Pharmacy; (b) on the second floor: the CCU, ICU , Telemetry, 2A, 3C, Surgical Ward and OB Ward; (c) on the 3rd floor: Operating Room, Delivery Room , NICU, 3A, 3C, Surgical Ward, and OB Ward, (d) on the 4th floor: 4B and 4A, 4C and Pedia Ward, and (e) on the 5th floor: 5B and 5A.
It’s as simple as selecting the desired destination from the station directory and pressing the send button. Routing through the multiple zones and diverters is determined by system’s PC Controller.
In keeping with existing health regulations, the stations are designed to operate with no air leakage during send and receive operations. Computer controlled pneumatic breaking automatically slows the carriers prior to arrival at the station. This helps ensure the safe delivery of delicate items. Stations are equipped with an easy to read, easy to follow, LCD menu that makes selecting destination and system activation as simple as can be.
Materials such as blood and tissue samples can arrive at the lab in seconds. Medications sent from the central pharmacy can reach the nursing stations by the push of a button. X-rays and their results can be in the hands of the technicians and doctors in a fraction of the time it used to take. Even transport of medical and surgical equipment can be made more efficient through the pneumatic tube system.
In addition, the Pneumatic Tube System relieves vital staff members of the routine transport of lab samples and medications, as the system delivers these items in a fraction time. Essential samples and medications reach their destinations in seconds rather than minutes. This is a clear implication that the Pneumatic Tube System will help DDH provide faster, more efficient service. By reducing, the requirement for routine errands, valuable members of the healthcare team are now free to direct their attention to their utmost priority… Caring for Patients.

Cebu Doctors’ Hospital gets accreditation from UK agency
By Katlene O. Cacho
Sunday, April 24, 2011
CEBU Doctors’ University Hospital (CDUH) has been given full accreditation for two years by United Kingdom (UK)-based healthcare company QHA Trent.
CDUH officials said the accreditation will not only help boost the hospital’s image but also Cebu’s stature as a medical tourism destination.
In a recent press conference, Oscar Tuason, hospital administrator of the CebuDoc Group of Hospitals, said QHA Trent is the right accreditation body to go for as it is anchored on a development approach that ensures an ongoing quality process. The accreditation also allows the hospital not to be dependent on the standards of other countries.
Patient-centric
Tuason said the hospital was introduced to several accreditation systems but found QHA Trent fitting for a local hospital since the accreditation scheme was patient-centric.
CDUH president and medical director Potenciano Larazabal Jr. said they wanted Cebu Doctors’ to be like hospitals in Hong Kong, which are mostly Trent-accredited. He said QHA Trent has adapted to local needs and situations.
Tuason reported that since last year, the hospital staff underwent a series of trainings to enhance their knowledge and improve patient services. He said the hospital is currently undergoing major renovations to provide the best health care and environment to its patients.
CDUH said it is the first hospital in the country and in Southeast Asia to attain the QHA Trent accreditation for two years.
“With the Philippines looking increasingly to promote medical tourism, the need for local hospitals to obtain international accreditation is increasingly important. The accreditation by QHA Trent should raise the profile of Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital internationally as it seeks to attract a bigger share of the growing market of visitors looking for affordable but quality medical treatment in the Philippines,” said British ambassador Stephen Lillie in a statement.
Officials said the QHA Trent scheme minimizes risk in the hospitals and clinics and maximizes the safety of patients, staff and general public anywhere in the world. Its method of assessment is based on UK’s clinical governance methodology.
Safeguards
“The accreditation by QHA Trent ensures that the hospital has all the safeguards, policies and procedures in place to ensure high quality health care,” said Dr. Tim O’Carroll, chairman of the QHA Trent Accreditation award panel.
Even if nurses and other medical workers continue to leave for employment abroad, Larrazabal said the hospital has enough health care professionals.
“We have programs to deal with the huge gap. Of course, we can’t stop them from going abroad but the hospital offers training programs to ensure our hospital staff is well equipped with skills and knowledge,” he said.
Hospital officials also said they are not looking at raising hospital rates for now despite the accreditation.

Pia NegOr, July 6, 2011
by Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, July 6 (PIA) --- The proposed out-patient department building at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) in Dumaguete City broke ground today, July 6, 2011 with top officials from the Department of Health (DOH)attending the ceremony.
Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo led the lowering of a time capsule the empty lot behind the NOPH New Administration Building, together with DOH Undersecretary Nemesio Gaco, Assistant Secretary Teodoro Herbosa and Enrique Tayag.
DOH has infused P77 million for the construction of the P80-million three-storey building.
Construction costs are also being aided by the European Union, according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Dante Domingo.
Domingo thanked DOH for their funding assistance, saying that the new building will boost the NOPH, classified as a Tertiary 1 government hospital. "We promise to further improve our delivery of health services for our people in the province," he told the DOH officials during the program held after the groundbreaking.
Usec. Herbosa disclosed that the DOH funding is a national grant aimed at improving pro-poor health systems nationwide. “We want to see public hospitals deliver quality health service at low cost, which is why we are putting money in basic health services and facilities,” he stressed.
DOH spent P7 billion in 2010 for construction of various health facilities across the country.
Gov. Degamo, in his speech, said the new OPD structure supports the provincial government's efforts to provide quality health care services to Negrenses. "It is my desire to meet the health needs of the people by providing patients a sanitary and comfortable place to stay at the NOPH," he stressed.
The new building is the fifth important health initiative launched in the province this year, starting with the Provincial Health Insurance of Negros Oriental (PHINO), fully integrated computerized health system, procurement of a diagnostic imaging equipment and the ongoing construction of the Central Block Building behind the NOPH.
Measures to improve the provincial hospital's facilities were started during the administration of the late Gov. Emilio C. Macias II who was a doctor by profession. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

It is good to note that this is the second major building to rise at the NOPH in less than 2 years, the first being the four storey hospital block near this building.

ISwitch July 9th, 2011, 02:56 AM [size=5]Region 1 Medical Center up for upgrading, expansion next year[/B] (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=2&rid=357829)
DAGUPAN CITY, July 8 (PNA) — The Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) here is among 22 government hospitals throughout the country set for upgrading starting next year under a five-year upgrading program of the Department of Health (DOH).
Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC director, said that the five-year upgrading of the hospital will coincide with the implementation of the five-year expansion of R1MC from 300 beds to 600 beds set to be realized through a bill filed by Rep. Gina de Venecia (4th District, Pangasinan). The bill was already approved by both houses of Congress, he said.
With this development, Mejia expressed confidence that the funding for the expansion of R1MC into 600-bed capacity will be already included in the 2012 General Appropriations Act.
“R1MC is lucky that it is third in the list of 22 DOH-run hospitals throughout the country set for upgrading under the five-year upgrading plan starting next year,” said Mejia during a press conference on Thursday.
Health Secretary Enrique Ona has set aside P20 billion budget for the upgrading of the DOH-administered hospitals throughout the country for the next five years.
A Level IV Tertiary Hospital which is also a training and teaching hospital, R1MC needs expansion because it accommodates more than 300 patients daily which is more than 100 percent than it can really accommodate.
Mejia said that under the expansion program for R1MC, 60 beds will be added to the hospital every year for the next five years starting 2012 till the additional 300 beds are completed.
The expansion of R1MC from 300 to 600-bed capacity includes its augmentation in human, technological and physical aspects, all aimed at making the hospital the most modern of its kind north of Manila.
Mejia said the expansion and upgrading of R1MC is expected to benefit patients coming not only from Pangasinan but also Zambales, northern parts of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija, western Nueva Vizcaya and southern parts of Benguet and La Union.
He said that being a training and teaching hospital, the only one in Pangasinan, R1MC will soon implement a specialty training program for neuro surgery, consistent with its present status as the trauma center in Region 1.
R1MC is also being eyed to become a heart, kidney and lung hospital and is set to perform its first ever kidney transplant before the end of this year.
Its plan to become a heart, kidney and lung center was endorsed by the Regional Development Council (RDC).
Aside from this, R1MC is also the Regional Blood Center in line with the National Blood Program implemented by the DOH and is working closely with the Philippine Red Cross in collecting and giving blood to the needy. (PNA)

tingkoling July 29th, 2011, 02:48 PM A HEALTH LANDMARK TO RISE IN SARANGANI
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/792/smcb.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/smcb.jpg/)
The province of Sarangani is proud of many things: its convivial and industrious people, its progressive agro-industrial economy, its many scenic areas, and, certainly, its world-famous son, Congressman Manny Pacquiao.
Come August 1, 2011, the province of Sarangani and its people will have one more thing to be proud of. On that day, ground will be broken for the new Sarangani Medical Center. Currently, there is no existing tertiary level hospital in the province of the SOCCSARGEN region, and the local government has had to arrange and pay for the required medical care of its constituents in several private and public hospitals in General Santos City. The new 200-bed tertiary facility is slated not only to be the first such hospital in the province, but also be the premier medical center for the entire SOCSARGEN region.
The conception of and eventual construction and operation of the new hospital is the result of unparalleled initiative and cooperation at all levels of government. Thus, the hospital project is fully endorsed and supported both by the Local Chief Executive, Gov. Miguel Dominguez, as well as the province’s Congressman, Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao. The establishment and running of the hospital will be made possible through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements – well in-keeping with a policy cornerstone of President Aquino. As such, the Sarangani Medical Center is not only a pioneering effort in the local government field but is slated to become a showcase of national development efforts.
Envisioned as a turn-key project, the state-of-the-art hospital is expected to remain highly accessible and, by relying on private sector management acumen, also provide appropriate care efficiently to all patients-in-need. The better health services that will be brought about with the operation of the new hospital are further anticipated to contribute to improvements in the health situation in the province and region. In particular, better medical management can be provided for sick children, complicated obstetric cases, and other patients with dire illnesses – thereby contributing to the DOH ‘s and the country’s commitment to addressing key U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The hospital project is being undertaken under the auspices of the DBP’s Credit for Better Health Care Program. The bringing together of the concerned government and private parties, in particular, is the culmination of a series of extensive consultations made possible by the program. It is hoped that the Sarangani Medical Center will be the first of many PPP engagements that will effectively address the urgent deficiencies of the country’s health sector.

Standards for health care providers being packaged
The Retirement and Healthcare Coalition (RHC), together with German certifying firm TUV Rheinland, will undertake a program that will develop and install an internationally acceptable quality management and accreditation system for healthcare providers.
Initially targeted are 15 hospitals and healthcare centers in Metro Manila, Cebu, Clark, Dumaguete, Subic, and Tagaytay, places which have been identified by the RHC and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) as ideal destinations for foreign retirees.
Henry Schumacher, RHC chairman and ECCP vice president for external affairs, said the program aims to create a network of trusted healthcare providers that can be marketed internationally in partnership with the government.
"We support the efforts of the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Retirement Authority in fully developing the country’s retirement industry. Still, for the aging population of the world to consider the Philippines, the current state of the healthcare industry must be addressed," Schumacher said.
The RHC has noted deficits in the quality of service, transparency of operations and prices, and inadequate legal basis for mistreatments even in tertiary hospitals that claim to operate on world-class standards.
Aside from the ECCP, the other core members of the RHC are the Japanese, Korean, and American chambers.
Healthcare providers that will complete the program will receive certifications that are equal to an international standard adapted to the specific needs in the Philippines.
Under the program, participants will go through awareness seminars, systems development, and capacity building.
"We want to ensure a certain level of safety in the medical treatment of foreign retirees coming to the Philippines. There should also be standardized rates on all medical procedures that are being offered," Schumacher said.
Currently, 15 percent of the world’s population is above 65 years old. Over the next four years, the aging population will reach over 918 million. Europe has the second-biggest aging population in the world after China with over 370 million individuals aged 50 and above.
Since 2006, the ECCP has been pushing the Philippines internationally as an ideal destination for retirees.

saintm January 24th, 2012, 01:26 PM Pangasinan: Health care a priority
By LIEZLE BASA IÑIGO
January 24, 2012, 5:38pm
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines — Health care services are a priority of the provincial government, Capitol officials said Tuesday as they cited ongoing repairs and rehabilitation of hospitals in Pangasinan and the continuing acquisition of modern medical equipment.
“Repair and rehabilitation (of medical facilities) got the most attention (from the Capitol) and Governor Amado Espino Jr. has given sufficient priority for the improvement of hospitals,” said Provincial Administrator Raffy Baraan.
Baraan said that in 2007 when most hospitals in the province were in an advanced state of dilapidation, a program to rehabilitate them were already set in place.
Baraan said these health care improvements have long been pursued for the people of Pangasinan, reason for which the provincial government was cited as 2010 Regional LGU (local government unit) Champion in the category of “Best Practices for Hospital Management.”
“In fact, patients wanting to be admitted in provincial hospitals have tripled. While there is only a 150-patient capacity in hospitals, patients number 486 a day,” said Baraan, illustrating how the public trusts current hospital services.
The Provincial Administrator sought to defend the state of hospitals and medical services in Pangasinan in light of a 2010 Commission on Audit (CoA) report which was released recently, suggesting that public hospitals in this province suffer from a lack in medical equipment to diagnose patients.
Baraan said Espino assured that improved health care is a priority of his administration and that even when hospitals are undergoing rehabilitation, there is no neglecting the current needs of the public for medical attention.
This was the statement issued by the provincial government after it was reported in a national dailies that "If You are sick, Dont go to Pangasinan hospital" (due to lack of enough medical equipment to diagnose and treat sick patients where Co A report 2010 was quoted.

P100M construction work at CLMMRH ready to start
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Dr. Julius Drilon, chief of hospital of the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, yesterday said they will start the construction of a 6-storey multi-specialty building at the CLMMRH compound in Bacolod City that he hopes will be finished before the end of this year.
The Department of Health has allocated a budget of about P100 million for the construction of the first phase of the new structure only, he said.
If their plans push through, they may be able to increase their bed capacity from 400 to about 600 beds, Drilon said.
Drilon said the multi-specialty building will be equipped with modern imaging systems, CT Scan, and almost all the radiologic equipment will be new.
He also said it will have an operating room and about 130 beds.
DOH has also allocated funds for the renovation of the Mother and Child Building and this will increase its capacity to 200 beds, including 12 for the Intensive Care Unit.
He said they are also constructing an emergency room at Burgos Street which they hope to inaugurate in six months. A new laboratory was inaugurated last Dec. 15, 2011, he added.

MatudNilaBaby February 26th, 2012, 04:12 AM Glad that VSMMC has Trauma Center because National Guard Hospital is keen on hiring staff nurses from Cebu or other Bisaya speaking regions due to its English proficiency.
Sayang we only have 1 both Cardiac and Trauma Center in Cebu.
is that the hospital's preference? why nurses from cebu or a bisaya?
