just an interesting trivia - Andrew Gotianun, the 7th richest man in the Philippines, together with his whole family spent their Christmas holidays in here in Buenavista Island. Two family-owned yachts docked there and a special Chef was flown in.

Suluan Island is a small island in the Philippines, in the province of Eastern Samar. It lies east of Leyte Gulf, near Homonhon Island and Calicoan Island.
It was the first ever landing place of Ferdinand Magellan's Armada after their 98 days Pacific crossing although Samar was their first land sighting. Samar did not have a safe harbor. "They headed to Suluan and dropped anchor for a few hours of respite." (source: Laurence Bergreen's Over the Edge of the World). They then next dropped anchor at Homonhon Island, where they spent a week with the natives, and then to Limasawa, where the 1st ever Christian mass was held March 31, 1521.

The caraga experience
By AJ de la Torre (The Freeman) Updated August 02, 2009 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - Cities evoke a mental picture of a concrete jungle, draped with large billboards and neon signs, blanketed by smog. It is a place of blaring sounds which people take as music. There are times when we yearn for a quiet moment and a breath of fresh air. We crave for something new… an adventure.
The Department of Tourism through Secretary Ace Durano and DOT-Region 7 recently invited a group of Cebu travel writers and travel operators on a four-day familiarization tour to Region XIII or better known as the Caraga region, with an itinerary that satiated our hunger for culture enrichment, adventure and relaxation.
And true to what they say, “You will never know how it truly tastes, until you feel it in your mouth,” we had a cultural immersion. After checking in at Almont Inland Hotel, the group was ready to visit the three museums in Butuan.
Led by DOT-7 Regional Director Patria Aurora Roa, our group had for a first destination Butuan City, known for its rich culture and history that dates back before Ferdinand Magellan’s landing on Philippine shores.
At the Diocesan Museum, the group was guided by Fr. Joesilo Amalla, who presented an almost kilometer-long paper with names from its historic past until present, proving that the first Easter Sunday Mass was held there. Butuan City is not only known for the story of Masawa Island in Agusan River Delta in Mindanao, but also as a source of well documented historical data and artifacts.
“Balangay”, which the word “barangay” is derived from, were small boats used in the early times. These boats were found in Butuan and are preserved up to this moment.
Second stop was at the Regional Museum It is a must-visit place in the city because there you get to see relics and artifacts that will prove that the Filipinos were already into trading with neighboring countries long before Magellan landed on our shores. The displays in the museum also showed what our early ancestors used, like their clothes, means of catching food and the utensils and equipment in their households.
The final visit was at the Butuan National Museum of the Balangay Shrine in Libertad Butuan City, where two of the five boats that were excavated from the banks of Butuan’s river, are displayed. At the back of the museum is an almost dried up river, still believed to have more of these balangays waiting to be unearthed.
Butuan evolved from three different hypotheses: One, derived from the sour fruit “batwan”. Another is from Raja Bantuan, one of the leaders who visited ancient Butuan. The third is of the people being “but-an,” meaning “hospitable” or “good”.
On the second day, we had a three-hour scenic ride to Hayanggabon wharf, where we took a boat to get to our next destination – Sohoton. The Hayanggabon wharf is found near Lake Mainit, the Philippines’ fourth largest lake and called such due to its warm water that spreads out between Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte.
Sohoton, which is in the municipality of Socorro, is one of the many islands of Bukas Grande, Surigao del Norte. We checked in at Club Tara resort, a Korean owned resort that is a favorite place for honeymooners. It has spacious rooms with verandas that are set right in the sea.
The nearby Sohoton National Park offers lots of activities, like the mystical Sohoton Cove, swimming to a secret underground passage that would get you six feet above the water and do a perfect dive. You could also kayak your way to the jellyfish sanctuary where you can swim with thousands of non-stinging jellyfish in varying psychedelic colors.
Aside from these, the place also has the Tiktikan Lake, the San Roque Mangrove, the Iñaran Marsh, Magkahuyok falls and the Buayahan Lake. This can all be done on a two-day tour while staying at nearby resorts like the Hidden Islands Resort which offers Economy, De Luxe and VIP packages.
Tourist guides are the local fishermen who are most familiar with the places and are very able English-speaking guides. They can answer any question you shoot at them. Now that’s excellent service!
But if you’re not into this adventure, you can just idly sit and enjoy the silence of nature, or feel the rustle of the leaves that sway in the mellow breeze. Tourism Operations Officer of Sohoton, Dhodo Genson Ajoc shared that they are into ecological protection, preserving exotic varieties like the pitcher plant and the Philippine Ironwood, known as the hardest specie in the whole world. Ajoc also identified five kinds of Philippine eagles found in the forests, as well as Rufus hornbills and Flying Lemurs.
On the third day of the exciting tour, the group rode a boat to three islets- the Naked Island, Daku and Guyam. These are found near Siargao Island, which lies in the northeast coast of Mindanao and is famous for its mountain-like waves… reason for it to be called the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines.”
This part of the region is a favorite of locals and foreigners alike and is visited all through out the year especially during August to October, which is the surfing season.
We checked in at Bayud resort, owned by Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers who was kind enough to offer the group the best accommodations, though the resort is still set to officially open next year.
And since Siargao is known for its waves, our visit would not be complete if we did not stop by the famous Cloud 9. Here, big surfing competitions have taken place. On September 24, “Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational competition” will open. This will be the 15th International Competition to be held there.
We visited the Magpupungko Beach in Pilar, where we were welcomed by Pilar Mayor Lucio Gonzales and his staff who prepared sumptuous snacks that could have fed a whole barangay. Magpupungko, or “sitting or squatting”, is famous for its rock formations that seem to be sitting or squatting along the shoreline during low-tide. As the water is contained inside the formation, it would resemble a giant swimming pool.
This was the place where the first “Game Fishing Competition” in the island was held last April 2008, attracting many tourists from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Russia.
As tourists began to flock to Siargao and accommodation became a problem, DOT Secretary Ace Durano allocated funds for the establishment of the “Home-stay Program”, where tourists can stay in the houses of the locals.
“Home-Stay Project” has been warmly accepted by the residents as it helps them earn extra income. After a thorough training in different services conducted by DOT, those who passed were given P75 thousand pesos assistance that they can use for the improvement of their houses or buy air conditioners, beds and bathrooms facilities.
The last day of our trip started off with an hour-drive going to the Municipality of Del Carmen where the group was greeted by their young and handsome Mayor Constantino Navarro IV. We were also joined by the very energetic DOT regional director of Caraga Letty Tan who led us to the Del Carmen Wharf where we set off in “bankas” to the popular Caub Lagoon and Mangrove sites.
These sites are favorite attractions in the region. It is a huge 4,000 square meter area filled with mangroves that look like they were all trimmed down to an exact height. The Mangrove area is the largest in Mindanao and the second largest in the whole Philippines.
Oh, and let me not forget those mouth-watering food! Everywhere we went, luscious fresh sea food dishes were offered. From huge alimangos, to different kinds of fish, and shrimps, prawns, lobsters. Delicious food that made us forget about our diets.
So if you are tired of the city and would want a totally new adventure, take the Caraga Tour and come home feeling like a whole new energized and prouder Filipino.

From the left is Tapiutan Island and then Matinloc Island. From the right side of Matinloc Island, look at the lower right of the picture, there is a another secret beach, which is bigger and accessible by boat. You have to go to either side of the big rock to access the hidden beach.
Tapiutan Beach
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/dxpsycho/TapiutanBeach.jpg
This my favorite beach spot of all El Nido Group of Islands. It is situated on the East side of Tapiutan Island facing Matinloc Island overlooking Matinloc Shrine. It is a big area with two interconnected nice beaches when you go further north. Actually it is on Tour C when you go on a boat ride from El Nido Town. It is a good place to camp, but you have to get a permit from local authorities in El Nido Tourism Office.
Secret Beach

This is located on the west side of Matinloc Island, just below and after Mount Horn, if you came from Tapiutan Strait (from the north).

just an interesting trivia - Andrew Gotianun, the 7th richest man in the Philippines, together with his whole family spent their Christmas holidays in here in Buenavista Island. Two family-owned yachts docked there and a special Chef was flown in.

BORACAY - The popular island paradise of Boracay was voted among the top ten holiday destinations in Asia in a recent Smart Travel Asia online survey.
The "Island of the Gods”, Bali, Indonesia ranked first followed by Thai island of Phuket. The South Indian idyll of Kerala in India came in third while the neon-powered city of Hong Kong is fourth.
Bangkok, Thailand co-ranked with Hoi An, Vietnam in fifth for the best holiday destinations in Asia.
According to Smart Travel Asia, Bali remains a peaceful ritual-minded Hindu enclave in a bustling Muslim country and Phuket for its string of wonderful beaches, fine food, nightlife and special Thai can-do hospitality.
Boracay, off mainland Panay, climbed one position to share the sixth spot with newcomers Goa, India and Langkawi, Malaysia.
Boracay is the top island beach destination in the country with over 400,000 travelers in the first six months this year, data from the Department of Tourism showed.
The island of Palawan and Chiang Mai in Thailand were ranked seventh followed by Angkor (Siem Reap, Cambodia,) Shanghai, China and Tokyo, Japan. Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Koh Samui, Thailand in ninth while Penang, Malaysia and Rajasthan, India in the tenth spot.
Mandala Spa of Boracay was also ranked 24th for the Best Spa Hotels in Asia, Cebu Pacific ranked fourth for Best Budget Airlines and Philippine Airlines maintained the tenth spot for Best Cabin Service Worldwide.
Smart Travel Asia, the region’s only dedicated online travel magazine with over one million readers worldwide, also voted the best business hotels, luxury resorts, spas, business cities, shopping spots, and the world's best airlines and airports.

vanishing island
The Philippine archipelago notably has 7107 islands in high tide, but it technically has 7108 in low tide. Perhaps this so-called "vanishing island" is that one island that, in reality, goes under water at high tide?

rdm September 20th, 2009, 05:08 PM hey guys. planning on visiting the philippines, particularly palawan, in november. any good recommendations? considering high end resorts like el nido/dos palmas but also welcome to medium end.
anyone have any insights on dolarog beach? been reading horrible reviews about it but looks super nice online.
also, is it feasible to reach the underground river from el nido? or do you have to stay in puerto princesa. how do you get from el nido to puerto princesa and how long is the flight?
thanks in advance, kababayans.
rdm September 20th, 2009, 06:40 PM also, anyone have any information about club noah isabelle in palawan? i am researching them heavily and they don't seem to have a website or any availabilty. thank you.

you can try visit their website at www.elnidoresorts.com. They offer high-end accommodations at Miniloc and Lagen island at El Nido. There are also lots of budget hotels along the coast of El Nido town. Try searching for "el nido tourism".
Underground River can be reached by van from El Nido. Travel is approximately 7 hours. There are no flights on that route. So it is necessary for you to stay overnight. You can either book a hotel at Sabang beach, the jump off point to the underground river, or stay at Puerto Princesa which is 2 hours away from Sabang.

DAPA_CITY October 17th, 2009, 02:26 AM D-Day Looms for Surfers in Next Week's Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational in Philippines
October 16, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
D-DAY is looming for an international cast of surfers with the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational in the Philippines less than a week away from starting.
'Cloud 9', a powerful, hollow right-hander located on Siargao Island will again be the focus of the global surfing community with entry confirmations from some of the world's hottest surfers including pipeline master Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), 2007 runner-up Nick Vasicek (Coolangatta, Australia), 2006 champion Ryan Hipwood (Gold Coast, Australia), New Zealand's first ever World Champion surfer Jay Quinn (Gisborne, now Gold Coast, Aus) and Hawaiian surfing royalty Makua Rothman.
An invite to compete in the 2009 competition was made all the more attractive with USD $20,000 on the table and the allure of flawless, barrelling waves.
48 surfers from Hawaii, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa and 12 local wildcards will compete in a specialised format, which culminates in man-on-man heats from the quarterfinals.
Reigning champion Edito 'Peso' Alcala (Philippines), who rode barrel after perfect barrel to beat 2007 title holder Wade Goodall (Caloundra, Qld, Aus) in last year's final, will don a competition vest to defend his title.
Local ace Alcala, who learned to surf at the revered break, will again prove tough competition for his international riders after putting in plenty of practice at Cloud 9 in the past month.
"It's been pumping for weeks," said 20-year old Alcala.
"We've been experiencing plenty of typhoons that have created some great waves. Hopefully it'll continue into next week."
:banana::banana:
What separates the specialty event from standard competitive surfing is that invited contestants are involved in deciding what conditions they will surf in.
With only two full days required to finalise the competition and a seven-day competition window, organisers have the luxury to wait for ideal conditions in which to run the event during Cloud 9's prime swell period.
Due to Siargao's proximity to the Philippine Deep, big swells from the Pacific Ocean roll in from the second deepest stretch of water in the world to create flawless, hollow barrelling waves.
The 2009 tournament will run from October 21-27,2009.
The tournament contest site is Siargao Island's 'Cloud 9', a powerful, hollow right-hander that has been frequently compared to the renowned surf of Hawaii and Indonesia.
The Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational 2009 is proudly supported by Billabong, Province of Surigao Del Norte, Stoked Inc, Von Zipper sunglasses, Nixon, Kustom footwear, Friendster, and Sagana Resort.

Tibanban Island
THE FADING SUN casts a resplendent glow over a group of fishermen scouring the vast Davao Gulf and Celebes Sea. Just as the lighthouse begins to flash its light, some fishermen start rowing their bancas (outrigger boats) to shore and head for home. Other fishermen begin their night shift, working until the wee hours of the morning.
Tired from the day’s work, husbands and young men gather in a small hut to relax and drink. They usually talk about fishing, but soon, delve into other mundane topics that elicit laughter and sometimes dancing and singing.
Their wives and sometimes young girls would join to listen or chat with them and the gathering becomes more jubilant. Children huddle in a corner and tell tales from the sea, ranging from mermaids, giant octopuses, sharks, whales, a village at the bottom of the ocean and other stories recounted by their grandparents.
These are some of the scenes in Governor Generoso, formerly known as Sigaboy, a coastal town in Davao Oriental, less than 200 kilometers from Davao City and located at the southernmost tip of Mindanao.
The town is named after Governor Sebastian Generoso who headed the province from 1925 to 1937.
The town is home to about 44,000 people from different ethnic origins, who are drawn to the fishing life.
Ecological wonder
Governor Generoso boasts of pristine white sand in Cape San Agustin; the Cagamisan or Tambobong falls; a 16,000-hectare pygmy forest; a centuries-old rock formation believed to be where the 15th century missionary priest from Spain, Fr. Francis Xavier, had his first Mass; and several mountains that trekkers could climb.
“The people themselves are aware of the richness of this place,” said tourism officer Reden Bersaldo.
“It’s a beautiful place,” he said, adding that the residents have a lot of work to do in their bid for tourism growth.
But while living in a land with rich resources, most families here are poor.
Alberto Cadiena Jr., a government employee, said some 65 percent of the population live below poverty line.

Hi dancethingy,
I live in Germany and spend only my vacation in the Philippines.
The birds are a lifelong nursing case, because they were stolen as a chicken out of the nests and were stamped then on the person.
Also they can't hunt, because nobody trained them.
Here some pictures (click on a picture to enlarge them).

Because I could not bring him back to the natur, I had build this cage for him. Now the cage is already full with three "Banogs".

dancethingy November 24th, 2009, 05:16 AM Hi dancethingy,
I live in Germany and spend only my vacation in the Philippines.
The birds are a lifelong nursing case, because they were stolen as a chicken out of the nests and were stamped then on the person.
Also they can't hunt, because nobody trained them.
Don't keep wild animals without permission of DENR.
if i may say so, you do great work banog. Thanks for sharing this with us. Are these species endangered? I didn't know any other species of Eagles beside the Philippine Eagle prior to your post.

There are different species of birds of prey in the Philippines. Some of them occur only in the Philippines.
They are endemic, like for example the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), the Pilippine Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus philippensis), the Philippine Falconet (Microhierax erythrogensys) or the Philippine Serpent-eagle (Spilornis holospilus).
My birds of prey are not critically endangered, but the are already listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and also you can found them listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Appendix II).
Some example of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species:
Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/144490/0)
White-bellied Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/144335/0)
Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/144334/0)
