aka IBM Tower

195m/640ft tall not including antenna
47 floors
completed in 1992
designed by KPF

2nd tallest skyscraper in Montréal, by just 10m.

http://mywebpage.netscape.com/rotnorthamerica/touribm.jpg

This is my favourite KPF skyscraper of all, though Plaza 66 in Shanghai and the GT International Tower in Makati offer some tough competition. This is also my favourite skyscraper in Montreal. It took me a long time to decide whether I liked this one better than 1000 de la Gauchetière, but the curved, reflective glass on the east façade pushes this one up into first. I couldn't find any good pics of the west façade, but it's very bold on that side, and very sleek and sexy on the east side. From the South and North it's super slender. I give it 10/10. You might think that's probably my hometown bias coming through, but I wouldn't give every Montréal skyscraper a 10, just this one. I think it's very beautiful and powerful at the same time.

7/10

I almost gave it a 6.5 due to its monotonous look..but raised it to 7 cos it does look good on its glassy facade.

8.5, glossy, yet has an art decorish touch to it, reminds me of my favourite in Sydney, Chifley Square

That's because both Montreal's IBM Tower and Sydney's Chifley Square were designed by the same architects i.e. KFP.

BTW A score of 7 for IBM

Yeh, very similar to Chifley, except it's height, nice curvy shape.

Hey they do look pretty similar! Well I find that most KPF Towers have some similarities to them. I like that Chifley Tower... not as much as the IBM Tower though :)

very elegant! and the bit of eclipse shape wins my vote 8.5/10

I like Chifley better, but that is besides the point. The "problem" with this tower IMO, is the seemingly muddled concept. There are various design elements present that clearly indicate that the architect was attempting to break up the mass and monotony of the building (the varied facades, the setbacks, etc), yet there are other elements that don't jibe with this concept. Such as using the same window size throughout all areas using the stone curtain wall, and the very repetitive/monotonous nature of the same facade, especially the western elevation. There is no horizontal or vertical accentuation (a sunshade, glass banding or other architectural detailing would have done wonders in this area), which invariably results in the building again taking on a massive, almost hulking demeanor. One cannot help but wonder if this was a design decision, or a financial one. (I tend to think money is the culprit)

With that said, it still give Montreal's skyline a fresh look, without straying too far from the existing context, both in terms of appearence and mass. Even with the blandness of the western facade, it is still my favorite Montreal highrise, and definitely makes a positive impact on the skyline and thus the city's image...

Wow... it's like 2 buildings in one... and I don't like either one! Normally I would like the "stone" look of the western facade... but not enough effort went into it... it's too hulking and monolithic... quite boring and drab... and I dislike the glass ellipse on the eastern facade... not my thing. 3.5

For the first glance, I said to my self "This must be KPF's work"...and eventually it is!!

Anyway, It looks unique, very unique and beautiful. Glasy with intentionally contrast between curve and perfect angles. But no matter how unique it looks, there are quite numbers of tower that has the same uniqueness around the world....that designed by KPF.
