Buéa a city within Southern Cameroon

Buea is the capital of the Southwest Province of Cameroon. It lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon and was the colonial capital city of the German Kamerun from 1901 to 1909, then of the Southern Province of British Cameroons (1949-1961).

Tea growing is an important local industry, especially in Tole.

The city hosts the University of Buea, the only Anglophone university of Cameroon. The city still has a handful of colonial era buildings, notably the palatial former residence of the German governor, Jesko von Puttkamer. Other German colonial buildings are still standing, but some of them suffer from lack of maintenance and old age. About 150,000 people live in Buea (including Muea; Tole; Miles 17, 16, 15, 14; Bova; and surrounding villages). It also hosts the Nigerian Consulate in anglophone Cameroon.

Originally, Buea's population consisted mainly of the Bakweri people. However, due to its position as a university town and the provincial capital, there are a significant number of other ethnic groups.

Notable Buea citizens include Mola Njoh Litumbe, Dr. Teresia Elad, Professor Boniface Nasah, and Professor Tanyi Mbuagbaw, who was the director of the Advanced School of Translation and Interpreters, and Dr. Dorothy Njeuma, who was the first vice-chancellor of the university when it started in 1993. Another prominent resident is the paramount chief of the Bakweri, S.M.L. Endeley

IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ONLY ANGLOPHONE UNIVERSITY IN CAMEROON. BAMENDA HAS AN ANGLOPHONE UNIVERSITY.

I mean... but seriously, if that part of Cameroon became independant, it would not be that successful. That english speaking part is landlocked thus not really available for trade and also, even IF it does become indepandant, it will probably be like another Congo conflict.

Not really a good idea.

They should just merge with Nigeria...I'm just kidding. No but seriously though if they feel they should be given independence then so be it. That sign that says "No Pidgin on Campus" is stupid.

I don't think joining with Nigeria will be a good idea.(We used to be joined with Nigeria) but we are tired of the francophone cameroonians and really wanna seperate ourselves and govern ourselves. We already have a president but the country wouldn't be called Southern Cameroons but AMBAZONIA

I was only joking with the "merge with Nigeria" thing. But hey whatever works, I wish you guys the best.

This is already creating conflict. People need to stop promoting the idea.

Nobody requested for a Civil War.

We don't need refugees in Cross Rivers.

That is false Lagbuja. Southern Cameroons is not land locked. Limbe (formerly Victoria) is a coastal city (capital city of the South West province) It is on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. If it fails it will be for reasons other than what you mentioned.
Most of Cameroon's oil comes from that region. A significant percentage of its agricultural exports as well... So does its timber. Then comes tourism: Buea, Limbe & most of the Bamenda highlands are huge touristic attractions. For a region that is barely 2M in population, I think the odds are they will do extremely well if they seceded.

Well, English speaking Cameroon doesnt really have a capital per say... It is made up of 2 provinces: North West Province (capital Bamenda) & the South West Province (capital Buea: which was also the capital of Kamerun [German Cameroon]) Limbe on the contrary is capital of Fako division (so I "mispoke" in my earlier post)

In any case, if they were to secede, chances are the capital will be Bamenda.. who knows. That hasnt happened & probably won't. I for one, will like for it to happen, if & only if it will be peaceful...

That all aside, great photos people!! True my dear Cameroon is sort of backwards (no growth for almost 30 yrs now) but still I love the shots!

they decided to join Cameroon, thinking it would be ''better'' for them....Unfortunately, it turned out much worse, than they expected it to be.

I was watching Canal +'s Les Guignols a few days ago & they had this joke on Mayans & American Indians, who tops the list of people who got conned the most in history... and Southern Cameroons immediately came to my mind!

They really fell bad for the French hype.. had they joined Nigeria or opted for Independence, I believe they would be one of the richest in the sub-region.

Whats the problem?
They should separate as the French leaders are doing nothing for the English part of the country.
They have some of the worst roads in the world.
