In 1908, Greensboro had the largest indoor arena south of New York City. It was called the Hippodrome and was located in downtown Greensboro. That was an extremly large arena for the times and had 3,000 less seats than todays Greensboro Coliseum. The Hippodrome was over 400 feet long and almost 200 feet wide.

Did you see in the article where they dissembled it and moved it to the State Fairgrounds in Columbia and called it the steel building? It apparently burned down in 1966. We need to find more pictures of it. Could you imagine using it for basketball with the echo off those metal walls?

I've been tryiing to find photos of the exterior but no luck. But a 20,000 seat arena was extremely large for the times, especially since Greensboro's population was around 17,000 in 1908. the arena held more people than the city's population but during the 1908 centential, 20,000 people filled that arena.
