Draff September 16th, 2004, 08:49 PM Japan is more frequenly hit by earthquakes, and therefore, there are mostly low-rise buildings. The landscape would look significantly different otherwise.

Taiwan is also frequently hit by Earthquakes, so is U.S. West Coast. Heck, the whole Pacific Rim is frequently hit by Earthquakes but then we have Taipei 101 in Taiwan and numerous other extremely tall skyscrapers dotted throughout the whole Pacific Rim, including the U.S. West Coast.
There goes your excuse :)
Draff September 19th, 2004, 03:28 AM I'm actually pretty sure Japan is hit more by Earthquakes than Western US and Taiwan... Regardless, in the last 15 years, there's been major advancements in engineering, therefore, it's possible to build more skyscrapers (hence the Shinjuku developments).
ALKUN February 14th, 2007, 12:32 AM NICE PICS

Not really, the San Andreas fault in California is extremely active but that doesn't stop San Francisco or LA from building supertalls. They constantly experience minor earthquakes and a major one every so often.
FML February 14th, 2007, 05:04 PM U.S. Geological Survey maps show Japan (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/world/seismicity/japan.php) having much more eathquakes compared with the Western US (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/states/seismicity/us_west_seismicity.php). When compared with Taiwan, we don't really have a good excuse, though.
onmyoji February 15th, 2007, 11:40 AM I remember you guys the nishi shinjuku 3 chou-me project 350 meter and the new sumida tower 610 meter. I am pretty sure that also in Tokyo the super high rise building culture will be strong in future...
