Another beautiful thread of a classic Southern Ontario town! Absolutely wonderful pics. Some of my ancestors settled there mid 1800's when they immigrated.

Growing up in Manitoba and living in Québec for the last 9 years, no one - I repeat - no one has ever enlightened me to how amazing some of Southern Ontario is nor to the plethora of beautiful architecture. Thanks for the enlightening experience...Guelph is a must-see next time I'm in Southern Ontario!

Absolutely amazing! So much character! I love the gray, fall setting, if you had taken these pictures on a sunny day the city would NOT have looked as cool!

I was in the same boat, Canuck. I, too, had no idea about the towns til well after I moved here.... someone drove me to St Mary's one day, and for me it was an eye-opening experience. There are just so many beautiful towns all over the south of Ontario.. also to the east in Prince Edward County there are many beautiful old Loyalist towns. The first time you go through Niagara-On-the-Lake you will be amazed....

Question why is it called "The Royal City"?

From wiki:

The town was named to honour Britain's royal family, the Hanoverians, who were descended from the Guelfs, one of the great political factions in late medieval Germany and Italy, and the ancestral family of George IV, the reigning British monarch, thus the nickname The Royal City

I went to Niagara-on-the-Lake last summer and was, quite frankly, in complete and total shock. It was stunning!! And the people were sooo friendly!

In Québec, people often trash Ontario like it is just a big wasteland of hideous suburbs and robotic people, so I thought that that was true. I now see that all the Ontario trashing is bullshit. Ontario (especially the south) is filled with stunning places! Thanks again for opening my eyes.

that is a fairly common societal process called "inculcation" ... I have always found it best to make up my own mind about another region of our country! :)

I, too, have learned to judge for myself. Luckily, I have now seen most of the country and have been surprised almost everywhere I have gone in this country (pleasantly)...

Anyway, what is the population of Guelph? I have a friend who went to university in Guelph and absolutely LOVED living there.
