Lucena widow deserves inclusion in Guinness Book ....
Friday, July 21 2006 @ 09:36 PM BST

Provincial
21 - Lucena widow deserves inclusion in Guinness Book of World Records

A 76-year-old widow in this city deserves to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Helen Nantes Zoleta, a newspaper publisher, claims she has not slept for the past 58 years. "Not even for an hour," she said.

What does she do at night? She prays the Rosary, reads the Bible and magazines and watches her favorite TV shows. She also takes care of her grandson, Vincent.

In the morning, Zoleta cooks breakfast for the family, washes some clothes, and tends to her roses, anthuriums, orchids, cacti, African violets and bromeliads at her garden in front of the Zoleta residence in Barangay Iyam in suburban Lucena City.

When her husband, Ven, died in December 1993, she assumed responsibility for the family-owned papers, Quezon Times, Ang Tanod and Inter-Island Monitor.

She is assisted by her three sons Joseph Kennedy, Bayani and Ramon Nonato in putting out the three weekly papers circulated in the Southern Tagalog region.

Zoleta said she started having insomia when she was 18 years old and a college student in Manila. Since then, she has not slept. "I don't ever feel sleepy," she claimed.

Zoleta has consulted leading medical practitioners in Lucena about her insomnia but none of them could cure her.

She also went to the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City for consultation to no avail. The doctors could not find anything wrong with her. (PNA) :ohno:

oo malakas ang loob nila magtayo ng malls dito kasi may proposed si cong. Alcala na magtatayo ng 2 ecozone dito sa Lucena and SM know that, sa ngayon 2 big malls operating this city,Ocean palace Mall ay magooperate ulit after na magsarado noong 2003 when to big malls open,OPM is Lucena City's first main Mall kaya magiging 3 malls dito na puro malalaki, yung dalawa sa LGCT ay maliliit lang yung isa is Cuevas mall from Cavite and another mall with hotel and yung anchor store nya ay walter mart according to a local tv here.May 100 has. din property dito ang ever gotesco.

OPM is Lucena city's First. Along with Centro park kaso nagsara na noong 2004.

Quezon-Batangas coastal road pushed

An P800-million coastal road linking Sariaya, Quezon to San Juan, Batangas to be constructed within the year is seen to stimulate tourism and industrial activity in Southern Luzon that has long been left wanting in development.

The road, also called Eco-tourism Coastal Road, has long been an approved project of the Department of Public Works (DPWH) since 1995. But construction is set just now as its presence is "justified" by the Nation Granary Inc.’s (NGI) P3.2 billion grains handling facility in Tayabas Bay, Quezon.

"It was suspended because of the crisis (Asian financial crisis) in 1998. When they saw it (grains terminal), they thought its construction is justified," said Florentino Serrato, president of the Dynatron Asia, project manager of the grains terminal, in an interview.

The road will cut travel time in the area from oneand-a-half hour to 30 to 45 minutes (through the now congested Maharlika Highway), giving industrial activity a lot of boost with fuel savings, goods delivery speed, and stoppage of post harvest losses for agricultural producers.

It will easily get vehicles to cut through Batangas — San Juan, Rosario, LIpa , Star Toll onto Calamba in Laguna.

The road is even an important thoroughfare to southern-most Luzon — Bicol — where many farms are as much as it will move industries in the area — petroleum terminals, biodiesel plant (Senbel in Lucena), quarrying, and construction supplies.

"It will be an important farm to market road to the Dalahican Port of Lucena where a lot of fishes, seafoods are being transported elsewhere," an NGI official said. "It’s time to get it constructed so that Quezon will come alive. There hasn’t been any improvement in Quezon for a long time."

Without the NGI facility, the Quezon area has been left without electric transmission facilities that are capable of carrying industrial load or even without telecommunication facilities. NGI uses its own generation set that costs it P3 to P4 million in bunker fuel oil per month.

"What’s here now can accommodate just 60,000 kva (kilovolt) which is only for office. Napocor (National Power Corp.) is willing to help us because they have a transmission facility, but that is 35 kilometers away from here, and they’ll be encroaching on Meralco (Manila Electric Co.) franchise," Serrato said.

Meralco offered to construct a three-phase transmission facility for industrial use (compared to the one-phase residential use facility now present), but Meralco asked NGI to put up a P18 million fund first.

NGI likewise has yet construct a satellite disc for its telephone needs since a local franchisee has not rolled out its committed infrastructure.

"In other countries, they put up the infrastructure even if there are no industrial activities yet," to attract future investors, said Serrato.

The National Economic Development Authority (Neda) has been facilitating approval for financing of the road project even as NGI itself has laid the ground-works for the infrastructure, having constructed a self-financed P1.5 million inner road through its bulk handling facility.

To be constructed over one to two years, the road will be 20 meter in width (four-lane), stretching over about 20 kilometers.

NGI’s bulk handling terminal has a silo and warehouse capacity of 225,000 metric tons (MT) which will be the Philippines’ biggest when it runs in the middle of the year. It is envisioned to make the PHilippines transmission hub in South East Asia with its port facility’s water depth of 18 meters which can accommodate big cape-size vessels with a 120,000 MT capacity.

Telecom backbone expanded to improve country's ICT infrastructure

The National Digital Transmission Network (NDTN), the second nationwide fiber optic backbone in the country owned by seven major telecommunication carriers, was recently expanded that would increase its capacity to deliver reliable and quality long distance services, cellular traffic, high-speed data, video, internet, broadcast signals and other communication services to major cities and localities nationwide.

The NDTN has been expanded from the present 2.5 Gb/s (gigabyte per second) to a 10 Gb/sec network, which translated to an increase of more than 120,000 lines of simultaneous voice and data transmission or increased bandwidth capacity of more than 4 times the initial service the NDTN previously provided.

Installed in 1999 at a cost of US$70 million, the NDTN is majority owned by Bayan Telecommunications (BayanTel), with Digitel, Eastern Telecom, Extelcom, Globe Telecom, PT&T, and Smart as co-owners. It is managed and operated by Telecoms Infrastructure Corporation of the Philippines (TelicPhil) and covers a distance of 2,762 kilometers stretching from San Fernando, La Union and Santiago City in the north to Davao in the south via Cebu and consists of microwave, submarine and land cable segments.

BayanTel chief consultant Tunde Fafunwa said that with BayanTel as the lead owner, the higher bandwidth from the NDTN expansion would serve as the foundation from which it will build the Internet protocol (IP) infrastructure that it is undertaking.

“Once completed, we can now deliver voice, data, video and Internet/IP services at faster speeds and higher reliability at any point nationwide from a single network. This enhanced capability will allow business and residential customers to benefit from new services and applications including VoIP, video-conferencing, multi-branch communications, etc.” Mr. Fafunwa added.

TelicPhil president Henry Galingan said the expansion was brought about by the dramatic increase in traffic traversing the network driven by increased telephone density, the boom in cellular phones, and high internet utilization all over the country, which stretched the network’s capacity to almost maximum by the end of last year.

The expanded network is expected to lead to even more efficient and affordable telecommunication services. To compare, the cost of maintaining a 64Kb/s service from Manila to Cebu five years (5) ago would be the same cost to maintain a 2Mb/s service or thirty (30) times the former circuit capacity after the expansion.

With the increased capacity at lower cost, even people living outside Metro Manila can experience real speed and broadband access just as affordably. The NDTN expansion particularly would benefit data traffic between Manila and Cebu as well the Lucena-Tigbauan, Dumaguete-Cebu, Manila-Lucena, and Dumaguete-Cagayan De Oro routes.

The expanded network would likewise help exploit the full potential of the country's knowledge economy which has the potential to generate millions of jobs in tech-intensive sectors such as call centers, animation companies, software development, medical and legal transcription companies and other business process outsourcing (BPO) services for countries like Japan, the U.S. and Europe.
The expanded NDTN allows investors to have the option to put up offices in other major cities outside of Metro Manila like those in Visayas and Mindanao, which can lead to the economic development of those regions with the generation of new jobs and investments.
The expansion was formally inaugurated via a simple launch ceremony attended by Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr, Congressman Simeon Kintanar, Chairman Virgilio Pena of the Commission on the ICT, and Commissioner Ronald Olivar Solis of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), and with chief executives of top companies expected to attend.

ECI Telecom, a global provider of advanced telecommunications solutions to leading carriers and service providers, was selected as the project partner to undertake the expansion program based on its track record as a global provider of advance telecom solutions.

Roads and Bridges : Work on the major toll road (South Express Way) to the fast developing Calabarzon industrial zone is nearly complete. However, a vitally needed connecting road to the new Batangas container port is stalled. Likewise, a connecting road south to the regional center of Lucena has not moved past the planning stage. Rehabilitation of the North Expressway to the Clark Special Economic Zone was completed in 1998. In Cebu, the badly needed second bridge to the Mactan Export Zone is likely to be completed in 1999. Other new road projects are in jeopardy due to funding constraints and the government’s extremely limited power in obtaining right of ways.

The magical song finale of Mau Marcelo’s rendition of On My Own by Whitney Houston yesterday was translated into votes that makes her the first Philippine Idol.

Mau Marcelo gets P1,000,000.00 cash and P1M non-exclusive contract with ABC 5, a recording contract from Sony BMG and a management contract from Freemantle’s assigned company. Rumors has it that Mau, our first Philippine Idol, will compete with several idol winners from other Asian and Pan-arabic countries for the title of Asian Idol.

Congratulations Mau!

naku mukhang pangarap nalang ang SLEX to Lucena kahit pa mas maraming motorista ang makikinabang dito as compared to STAR to batangas port... SLEX to Lucena leads to another region (Bicol) pero ang STAR to batangas leads to the sea... pareho silang economic boon pero I think mas justifiable ang Lucena SLEX... pero politics always kills it... hayyy buhay... sana nga ang leaders natin will have the political will and correct reasoning...

Even Candelaria Have its own 7-11 Convinience Store. Yung Four Lanes Maharlika hi-way is a long term Dev.Plan From tiaong to Talipan it means may asphalt laying na magaganap sa L.C. Diversion road Early this year sabi ni Cong.Alcala pero yung town proper na Tiaong,Candelaria, and Sariaya has no Chance na maging four lane it is effective only outside the town Proper.

Dark horse Mau bags
first ‘Philippine Idol’ title

A brown, hefty Cinderella from Lucena City once despaired that Philippine Idol was turning into “a beauty contest.” On Sunday night, Maureen Marcelo became the country’s first Idol in a tight contest of text votes.

On the strength of her last song during Saturday’s final competition at the Araneta Coliseum, Marcelo triumphed over a mestizo La Salle alumni and theater performer, Gian Mag*dangal, and brown-skinned hunk Jan Nieto, an Ateneo graduate and neophyte to singing contests.

Marcelo, 26, won by barely over one percent of the votes cast, said contest host Ryan Agoncillo.

He said the winner garnered a little over 36 percent of all votes cast, while the second and third placers had almost 34 percent and 31 percent.

Judges showered the two men with praise on Saturday and had some criticism for Marcelo during her first two songs, “Love Takes Time,” and the Kathy de la Cruz Filipino standard, “Balut Penoy.” Composer Ryan Cayabyab said she flubbed some notes in the second song. Fellow judge Francis Magalona said he was missing the connection Marcelo had with the audience at the smaller SM Megamall theater, site of the earlier rounds of the competition.

But when Marcelo belted out Whitney Houston’s “On My Own,” her last piece, the audience gave her a standing ovation. Even the fans of Nieto and Magdangal cheered and clapped for the dusky diva-in-the-making.

“I was looking for magic the whole night,” Cayabyab said. “Finally, we have it,” he told Marcelo, who seemed teary-eyed from the earlier remarks.

Marcelo has landed in the bottom three of weekly episodes, and seemed to blame her poor performance on her looks and her relatively poverty that, she said, did not allow her to orchestrate the sending of votes. She repeated the line about poverty on the last round of competition.

A couple of months back, some admirers had taken Marcelo under their wing, revamping her outfits. She went on a diet and lost 12 pounds.

But regular and guest judges chided her for wallowing in self-pity and urged her to take a more optimistic attitude to life.

Her greatest triumph was a repudiation of Marcelo’s statements.

Marcelo is a veteran at singing competitions. Magdangal is a former boy band member and theater actor while Nieto was a sheltered, mid-level executive before joining the talent contest.

Fans of the three grand finalists came in color-coded uniforms, pompoms, streamers and large tarpaulin photos of their idols. Nieto’s fans were in blue while Magdangal’s were in orange. On Saturday night, supporters of the three contenders occupied the Upper Box section of the Big Dome, which was filled by about 90 percent.

At the showdown night, the contestants were asked to sing three songs each: their song of choice, the judges’ choice and another song picked out by Sony-BMG Records, which awarded a recording contract to the grand champion.

Guest performers on Sunday night included Gary Valen*ciano, Haji Alejandro, the band Cueshe, Giselle Toengi and the Sex Bomb dancers.

Marcelo took home P1 million in cash, a P2-million contract with ABC 5, and a contract with Sony-BMG Records. Magdangal and Nieto were each awarded P250,000 by network owner Tonyboy Cojuan*gco who witnessed the awarding ceremony with partner Gretchen Barretto.

If there would ever be an Asian Idol or a World Idol contest, Marcelo would be the country’s representative.

Pinoys, however, hardly idolize portly singers. Frenchie Dy and Bituin Escalante are not as in demand as Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, Rachel Ann Go, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Pops Fernandez. After winning Philippine Idol, will Mau Marcelo’s fate prove to be different?

Celebrate With US MSEUF @ 60

http://img320.imageshack.us/img320/1707/whatshot2ff6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The growth of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) is simply phenomenal. It registered 734 students, which is 296 or 67.6% more than last year’s 438. The year before that, Nursing only had 257, meaning that the department’s number almost doubles every year.

BS Nursing is now the most popular academic program in the campus. With 728 takers, it dethroned the long-reigning BS Business Administration program of the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA), which now only has 709. It now only ranks third after BSHRM of the College of Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Management (CTHRM), which has 718.

Nursing is also the fastest-growing program, increasing at a runaway rate of 124 students per semester. BSHRM ranks second, getting 39 more students per semester. In contrast, BSBA is the fastest-regressing academic program, losing an average of 54 students per semester since 1997, when it boasted 1,571 students. Now it has less than half of that.

CTHRM is now the second largest academic department with 859, overtaking the College of Engineering (810) and College of Education (665). At its present growth rate of 93 students per year, it will take over CBA as the largest department next school year. This year is it’s most amazing growth yet at 45.1% (from 592 last year). The department’s new building and facilities are credited for CTHRM’s increased appeal to prospective enrollees.

The Business department still clings to the lead with 957 students, but sees 263 less of its students every year. The College of Criminology and Law Enforcement (CCLE) broke its own four-year slump when it registered 559 students, an 8.5% rise from last year’s 515. CCLE has been plagued by continuous decline since 2001 following the nationwide withdrawal of the Associate in Criminology program.

Engineering slightly declined from 844 to 810 (-4.0%). Still, it holds off by maintaining some of the university’s stronger academic programs like Computer Engineering (203 ranked 9th), Civil Engineering (171 ranked 11th), Electronics and Communications Engineering (151 ranked 12th) and Industrial Engineering (100 ranked 16th).

Education went down from 757 to 665 or a 12.2% decrease. Despite the introduction of new programs like para-education, the department still suffers continuous decline for the last six years, losing some 28 students annually.

With 219 enrollees as of press time, the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research might want to squeeze up at least 31 enrollees from its consortium programs (and from very late enrollees) if it hopes to match last year’s 250. Otherwise, that’s a 12.4% drop.

The College of Computer Studies still maintains a steady decline rate, going from 550 last first semester down to 507 today, or -7.8%. The trend has been initially attributed to the emergence of satellite AMA and STI schools in Lucena City, and lately to the introduction of BSCoE by the Engineering department.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) peaked off at 216, which is 21 or 8.9% short of last year’s 237. CAS last experienced an increase with the introduction of Nursing under its wing. Since its separation, Arts resumed its decline. The department offers the widest range of academic courses, which unfortunately includes some of the least active programs. Enrollment in AB Journalism, History, General Science, Biology, and Literature usually range from one to none.

The College of Law has 75, or nine less students than last year, while the Institute of Maritime Studies has three more than last year, with 323 from 320. The College of Architecture and Fine Arts, the second smallest department after Law, gets even smaller with 137 students, five less than last year. It has been on decline for eight years, despite the introduction of the Fine Arts program.

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/2518/hotnottableax4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Turning the tide

Aiming to arrest the downtrend and establish a steady increase in enrollment of about 5% annually, the university began to employ a two-pronged strategy: active approach recruitment and more aggressive promotional activities.

The career guidance program was reactivated and re-conceptualized through coordination between the Office of Student Affairs and the Research and Promotions Center (RPC). Between October 2004 and April this year, Enverga University visited 17 schools which registered the participation of 3,563 graduating high school students.

The Bisita Eskwela was likewise repackaged and made more active. From August 2004 to February this year, some 885 students from eight secondary schools visited the university and received a full tour of the campus grounds and facilities.

The design, publication and dissemination of promotional materials were also intensified. New posters, flyers, calendars, etc. were distributed to visited and visiting schools, as well as during school events. For maximum effect, the new materials prioritized the incorporation of design aesthetics over traditional bureaucratic concepts.

Advertising and promotion tapped the power of print and broadcast media. The university recently placed a two-page full-color ad over Manila Bulletin. Outdoor tarpaulin billboards were strategically placed in the Grand Central Terminal and in Malicboy.

Local TV stations like STV6 now regularly cover big events in the campus in addition to advertisements. Enverga University radio ads are on air every day over local stations like Campus Radio, DZEL, Radyo Natin Gumaca, Spirit FM, etc. RPC has fully assimilated video production and editing into its operations.

Lastly, RPC has been building and improving its database of secondary schools as well as HEIs. In the works is a freshmen survey designed to provide data that can contribute to improved retention efforts.

Information gathered affords a continuing and deepening analysis of the university’s market and competitive profile. This in turn will enable the management to formulate research-based promotion and recruitment strategies.

Lucena prepares grand welcome for ‘Philippine idol’

By Delfin Mallari Jr.
Inquirer
Last updated 06:13pm (Mla time) 12/11/2006

LUCENA CITY -- A grand welcome here awaits Maureen “Mau” Marcelo after she won the prestigious search for the Philippine Idol singing contest in a dramatic fashion Sunday evening.

“The city government will give her a majestic welcome befitting a Lucenahin who made every citizen of this city feel proud. As a matter of fact, my first order for the day is to make a beautiful float that she will use in the grand parade around the city,” Lucena Mayor Ramon Talaga Jr. told the Inquirer.

Marcelo’s relatives were equally jubilant with her victory as the first Philippine Idol who will represent the country to the upcoming World Idol.

“I’m so very, very happy. My granddaughter deserves the title, she’s really good,” said Erlinda Reyes, Marcelo’s grandmother, who admitted that she cried when the contest host, Ryan Agoncillo and guest Heart Evangelista announced the winner.

The old woman advised the new singing sensation not to forget the ordinary people who supported her to victory. “She should thank them all and never forget them,” Reyes said.

She admitted that she and her granddaughter were having a petty misunderstanding. “But that’s nothing. I’m her old ‘nanay’ [mother] and I’m proud of her achievement,” the old woman said.

Even the vendors in the city market were all euphoric with Marcelo’s victory. “Sulit ang aking mga text votes sa kanya [My text votes for her were worth it],” said Fe Mendoza, a vegetable vendor.

Two fish vendors were overheard arguing with each other on who sent the most number of text votes.

Jenelyn Ilagan, Marcelo’s stepsister, admitted that the Lucena delegation was disappointed with the negative comments of the Philippine Idol’s resident judges after Marcelo’s first two songs during the grand finale last Saturday.

“We could sense that Mau was all alone and even the judges were determined to frustrate her. But she exhibited her true fighting form when she impressively sang her last piece for the evening, which brought the whole Araneta audience to its feet. From thereon, and with the masses solidly behind her, she’s already the winner. They could no longer stop it,” she told the Inquirer.

“We talked with Lovely [Marcelo’s nickname] till the first hour in the morning just outside the Araneta. She confided to me that she can already feel her victory and I shared her feeling,” she said.

Jenelyn’s husband, Martin, who brought Marcelo to Singapore in 2004 to give her foreign exposure in singing revealed that she’s already popular among the Filipino community in Singapore even before her Philippine Idol quest.

“They knew her as Samantha Brown. They got to know her true name in the Philippine Idol. We followed every development of the contest through the Internet. We listened to them [the contestants] through You-Tube website,” said Martin who works in Singapore as an electronics engineer.

Incidentally, all the 10 songs in Marcelo’s first CD were composed by Martin. “I brought her to Singapore because the breaks that she needed here [Manila] seemed elusive. And while there, she mesmerized them all with her wide repertoire of songs which she delivers like an international pro,” he recalled.

Mayor Talaga said he had been in touch with Marcelo for the schedule of her return to the city of her roots.

“She’s very eager to return and thank the people of this city who wholeheartedly supported her. She’s just finishing her loads of post-victory appointments that have been lined up for her in Manila,” the mayor said.

Talaga described Marcelo’s triumph as “a sweet victory.” “She defeated all the odds that were stacked against her since day one of the contest. What pushed her to go on was her strong determination, which is typical of a Lucenahin,” he said.

He said he would send Marcelo and her husband Richie on a round-trip vacation to Hong Kong as his personal gift. “I promised her that if she will make it, and I fully believed that she will, I will send them to Hong Kong for the much needed break after the contest.”

'Bazooka' a hot-selling noisemaker in Lucena City

By Delfin Mallari Jr.
Inquirer
Last updated 11:33pm (Mla time) 12/25/2006

LUCENA CITY--A retired band member in this city has fashioned a cannon out of a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe, turning it into a hot-selling noisemaker to welcome the New Year.

John Almario, 37, got the idea from the "boga" cannon invented by the Caviteños.

He bought a red PVC "bazooka" in Cavite last year, tinkered with its parts and mechanisms, added some innovations and came up with his own design.

He now has a booming business selling the cannons in a makeshift stall along the main road of the Market View Village here.

"I knew I could make money from it," Almario told the Inquirer.

Two years ago, the "boga" cannon was very popular because it was a safe, cheaper and more effective noisemaker.

Like the cannon invented by the Caviteños, Almario uses PVC pipes and fittings as the main materials.

Unlike the original cannon which uses a disposable cigarette lighter, Almario uses a gas stove igniter, that can be activated with the click of a triggering mechanism. This sets off a loud explosion from the combustion of squirts of methyl alcohol at the tail end of the pipe.

Almario showed the Inquirer a modern version of the traditional bamboo cannon made of a double barrel, size-4 PVC pipe which he sells for P1,200 apiece.

He said his invention could "produce a loud boom which could surpass the bang of Bulacan firecrackers."

Almario squirted a few drops of methyl alcohol on the back chamber and after shaking the tube a bit to create a vapor, he pulled the trigger.

The resulting blast was deafening, prompting some motorists to stop and inquire about Almario's bazooka-like cannon.

A youngster was overheard trying to convince his father to buy him a smaller version of the cannon which cost P600.

"Word spreads fast about the quality and the loud bang produced by my cannons," Almario said. "I have orders coming from neighboring towns so we have to work double time to beat the New Year deadline."

One of his workers was seen spraying paint on a finished cannon, making it look like the real McCoy.

Almario maintains a small working area at the back of his house where he and some of his hired hands assemble the noise device.

"Putting each cannon together requires meticulous attention. I always make sure that my products are safe to use by New Year revelers, unlike the traditional and often dangerous firecrackers," he said.

However, he would still advise buyers to take extra precaution when they fire the cannons.

"The user should make sure that the chamber is tightly sealed before pulling the trigger or it may backfire and cause injury to others," Almario said.

Lucena firecracker vendors herded in cemetery

Southern Luzon Bureau
Last updated 11:52pm (Mla time) 12/31/2006

LUCENA CITY--To avoid the repeat of the deadly fire that occurred a day before the New Year's celebration two years ago, the local government here has herded all vendors of firecrackers and pyrotechnics inside the vast compound of the still unused public cemetery located in the outskirts of the city.

Senior Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac, Lucena police chief, said he had ordered the local police force to strictly implement the local ordinance designating the public cemetery as the common selling area of legal New Year's explosives.

"We have to be strict to protect the welfare of the whole city. We can't afford to be complacent when what are at stakes are people's lives and properties," Sindac said.

Past noon of Dec. 31, 2004, a vendor lit up a firecracker to test his merchandise but instead of shooting up, the rocket made a horizontal turn and landed on a pile of pyrotechnics inside a store near the public market.

The rocket set off a massive explosion and caused a fire that burned nine other establishments.

At least 15 persons were killed in the blaze and millions of pesos worth of property were destroyed.

After the fire, the local government passed an ordinance designating the still vacant cemetery in the secluded corner of Barangay Market View as the common area for all local hawkers of New Year's firecrackers and pyrotechnics, which were formerly openly selling their dangerous products in the vicinity of the public market in the central part of the city.

Sindac said the local police would also implement the ban on the use of "boga," an improvised cannon fashioned out of a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe.

"It's a national order from Camp Crame," he said.

PNP chief Director General Oscar C. Calderon also announced the order in a message at Camp Gen. Simeon Ola during the turnover of the Bicol regional command from Chief Supt. Victor B. Boco to Chief Supt. Ricardo I. Padilla on Thursday.

Calderon also appealed to local executives to issue similar orders to ban "boga" in their areas of jurisdiction.

According to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, the use of "boga" and picolo, another type of firecracker, made up almost 50 percent of the cause of the 173 firecracker-related accidents last year.

John Almario, the lone maker of PVC-made cannons here, said the product was safer compared to common firecrackers like "bawang," "triangulo," and many other similar explosives.

"I've already sold plenty of my products but no one has returned to complain that he was hurt or injured. I took extra efforts to fulfill all the safety requirements to make it safe for the users. But if the user is careless, that's another matter," he said.

However, he said, he would abide by the police order.

"Anyway, I've already recouped my small investment and already made a little profit," Almario said.

Actually my classmate is one of the supervisor in constructing this huge project and since 2006 it is operational, oo naman para sakin di rin applicable kung sa Gensan pa magmumula yung products kasi iikot pa for the whole island of minadanao ang shipment ,pero napakaliit na factor lang nito para makaapekto sa buong pilipinas, how about shipment from luzon, visayas and northern mindanao? i think itoy pinagisipan ng NGI. and dont think na hindi ideal and shipment at this side of province kasi kung i compare sa lucena ports mas malapit ang sariaya port mula sa ASEAN countries. and Lucena City is an international Port also.

thanks lucentino.... the reason why im asking this is to know how people then, the lucbanins, travel to manila, did they walk down lucena and take a steamship from there? or did they travel down to sta.cruz and took a steam boat from laguna down to pasig manila (as rizal portrayed in the noli)... and comparing the structures, lucban has quite an older church than lucena, among others....

This is Correct Utol Raja_Soliman,Lucena is only a Barangay of Tayabas Town since then. Offcourse the Mother Town of Tayabas was too old even than Lucban. But F.Y.I the oldest town in the philippines is the Town of Unisan,Quezon(Kalilayan).^^

As the University marks its sixth decade, we take time to look back at its humble beginnings – from the moment when it seemed to be no more than one man’s impossible dream; to the colossal struggles against seemingly insurmountable odds – to its present status as one of the most outstanding institutions of higher learning in the country. We also take this opportunity to honor and pay tribute to the generations of selfless individuals behind these accomplishments.

Inspired and empowered by our legacy, we soar to a point where we have a clearer vision of our goals than ever before. Gifted with a greater understanding of our limitations and potentials, abstract goals like academic excellence and global competitiveness now crystallize into a concrete and definite path before us.

United by a sense of shared history, we traverse this path and continue the legacy begun by those before us. And as one we will continue to mold Enverga University into the image envisioned by our great founder: as a provider of quality education second to none, and as a stalwart foundation of the future of our nation, and of our people.

Pure Gold now FRC Mall’s anchor tenant

FRC Mall has accepted an offer of Pure Gold to be its flagship tenant in all the malls to be built up by Cuevasville.

Their partnership actually starts in, Cavite where the FRC Supermall is being rushed for completion. Pure Gold is now busy stacking up on goods inside the sprawling mall, two floors of which will be occupied by the grocery giant.

This early, planning has started on the next FRC Mall to be built in Lucena, Quezon where a three-star hotel will be built behind the mall to accommodate weary travelers. Pure Gold and Cuevasville are now drawing up plans for FRC Lucena which will be much bigger in size than that of FRC Super Mall in Imus.

Richard Masangkay, the real estate companys spokesperson said Cuevasville is upbeat about the malls opening much ahead of schedule. FRC Super Mall targets early September as its grand opening day

Much bigger in size than its sibling, the FRC Mall in Bacoor, the Super Mall is expected to accommodate more shoppers, who Masangkay promised, would be treated to worldclass shopping experience.

Masangkay said the project is part and parcel of Cuevasvilles master plan of putting up malls where there is great demand for it. He said that the Super Mall is expected to stir up consumerism in this part of the likewise booming Cavite. Rising on an 8.4 thousandsquare-meter lot in Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Highway, the malls’ total floor area of 34.8 thousand sq.m will be home to good food, stylish clothing, banks, pawnshops, foreign exchange, recreation, state-of-the-art cinemas and a transportation terminal.

Maureen "Mau" Marcelo (born May 13, 1980) is a Filipina singer who rose to prominence as the winner of the first season of Philippine Idol in 2006. For a time, she went by the stage name Samantha Brown.

Hailing from Lucena City, Marcelo started singing at age 7. By her 20s, she was a veteran of singing competitions, including the Star for a Night singer-search that was won by Sarah Geronimo. On Philippine Idol, Marcelo was dubbed the "Soul Idol" and "the black belter" for her powerful R&B-style vocals.

After winning the title, Marcelo's debut performance as the first Philippine Idol was on ABC-5's Shall We Dance: Christmas with the Champions special where she reprised her winning song. On December 20, 2006, she gave a command performance at Malacañang for the Christmas party of the Office of the President of the Philippines.

As part of her Philippine Idol prize, Marcelo won a recording deal with Sony-BMG. Her forthcoming album under that label will feature "Try It on My Own", her final performance song from the competition.

A CD-EP version of the album, entitled On My Own, was released on January 2, 2007. Besides the title track ("Try It on My Own"), the EP includes two other songs Marcelo had performed on Philippine Idol ("Love Takes Time" and "Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin"), as well as "Minus One" versions of these songs. The release of the full album is planned for May 2007.

Marcelo's other recordings under Sony-BMG include two tracks on the Philippine Idol: The Final 12 CD: "Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin" (a solo) and "Kaleidoscope World" (the group song featuring the top 12 finalists).

Prior to Philippine Idol, Marcelo had also recorded, as "Samantha Brown", a self-titled album of ten original songs composed by her stepsister's husband.

DPWH COMPLETES ROAD PROJECTS IN LUCENA CITY

The asphalt overlay of four (4) vital road projects costing P50 Million within the city of Lucena, the capital of Quezon province has been completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways. In his report to DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr., Quezon District Engineer Demetrio Aleta said that the asphalt overlay of the 2.32 km Iyam and 1.78 km Red V sections of the Manila South Road – Old Route have been completed including the asphalt overlay of the 2.76 km road along Cotta, Lucena City. Also reported completed is the asphalt overlay of the Lucena Cadre Road inside the Camp Nakar, the command post of the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM), the Philippine National Police provincial headquarters, the Philippine Army, and the Philippine Air Force landing area. Ebdane, who inspected the road projects in Lucena City and the district engineering offices talked to the DPWH rank and file urging them to continue with their efforts especially during calamities. “Keep the national roads open at all times,” Ebdane said, as he dialogued with the rank and file. “The Manila South Road (Maharlika Highway) is the only link by land to the Bicol Region,” he said. National roads in Quezon province have been rendered impassable due to landslides and flooding caused by typhoons in the recent past. Ebdane also inspected the status of the on-going rehabilitation of the Quirino Highway in Quezon.

MP Warriors GenSan joins NBC

MANNY Pacquiao tries to extend his dominance from the boxing ring to the basketball court when his MP Warriors GenSan joined the National Basketball Conference (NBC) recently.

The world’s 2006 Fighter of the Year and NBC Secretary-General Tito Palma signed the memorandum of agreement at Pacquiao’s mansion in General Santos City, making the country’s tuna capital the newest member of the regional cagefest.

“My team will play as hard as I do when I’m in the ring, but try to win friends off the court,” said Pacquiao.

Team manager Raides Neri and his assistant, Romy Neri Jr., joined Pacquiao in the signing ceremony.

NBC president Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla and league executive vice-president Mayor Bambol Tolentino welcomed the new development.

“It’s great news, coming after sealing a deal with Solar-Basketball TV,” chorused Padilla and Tolentino.

The MP Warriors GenSan hope to make a big impact when NBC kicks off its fourth season on March 10 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.

PacMan’s team won the Mindanao division title in the inaugural season of the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association and came close to duplicating the feat last year.

Coached by Ramon Pido, the MP Warriors are expected to be among the leading challengers of grand slam champion Ozamis Cotta.

Meanwhile, NBC will have its first team owners’ meeting this year on February 3 in Cagayan de Oro City. Basketball TV will also have representatives in the meeting.

Church trains young girls as altar servers

LUCENA CITY - It’s girl power at the altar. Parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Church in Barangay Ibabang Iyam here were delighted with the unusual sight of young girls serving at the altar during one of their regular celebration of the Mass.

Rev. Fr. Nelson Valle, parish church, told The Manila Times this occurrence is not a novelty though it is only now that the Diocese of Lucena is practicing the initiative.

He said presently, the church has five official altar girls or altar servers as we call them, though he added that they are officially called Knights of the Altar.

These five girls went through a rigid three-month training where they attended all the Mass celebrations, especially the Sunday Mass.

It is here that the girls observe the duties and responsibilities of altar servers before their formal investiture following a 3-month training.

Father Valle said the five girls started to come last year and expressed their interest in serving at the altar.

He added the parents’ support is most important because being an altar server entails total commitment and without financial remunerations.

Presently, the girls served at the altar, together with the boys as regular altar servers. Girl applicants are now growing in numbers, Father Valle concluded. Belly Otordoz,The Manila Times

Gerry’s Grill: Goin’ to California

By Terrie B. Fucanan

ANOTHER Filipino restaurant is taking the bold move of branching out overseas—not to neighboring Asian countries, but to the bigger, more competitive US market.

The 8-year-old Gerry’s Grill has
outlived several grilleries in the
country and is now ready to
branch out to the USA.

After 17 outlets in the Philippines (with more to open in 2006), Gerry’s Grill has taken on the challenge of opening a branch in Union City, San Francisco, California. The 200-plus-seater restaurant is scheduled to open before Christmas, as part of a new restaurant strip being developed in the area.

“It’s everyone’s dream to hit the US market,” said Francis R. Villaluz, Gerry’s marketing director. “I think our time has come.”

Gerry’s is now among several Filipino restaurants that have opened branches in the United States, including Jollibee, Chowking, Goldilocks, Red Ribbon, Barrio Fiesta and Max’s Fried Chicken.

“Opening a branch in the United States is a great achievement,” added Villaluz. “Especially if it becomes successful. We’re confident that our experience and success here will be very useful to our US operations.”

Gerry’s Grill first opened on Valentine’s Day of 1997 on Tomas Morato, Quezon City. Eight years later, the tropical-themed restaurant that serves Filipino favorites and grilled specialties has opened nine franchise outlets with out-of-town locations in Cebu, Lucena, Batangas, Baguio and Pampanga.

The restaurant-bar setup initially targeted the after-office crowd. But through the years its market has grown to include families, and in branches where it has function provisions, the restaurant also accommodates private parties and seminars.

Branching out to Schwarzenegger’s state

Gerry’s founder, the young restaurateur Gerry Apolinario, still runs the chain as general manager and co-owner. And he himself had taken charge of the preparations for the opening of Gerry’s in California. He has begun flying to the US state of the actor-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger since March to oversee the outlet’s construction and staff training.

Putting up the restaurant, however, isn’t as easy as it seems. “First off, we had to prove to the owner of the commercial center there that Gerry’s is an established name,” said Villaluz. “California has a huge Filipino population, but still commercial center owners are strict on whom they would lease their spaces to.”

After reading Gerry’s profile and surfing through its website, the commercial center’s management finally approved Apolinario’s application. The next concern was the costly construction. Villaluz revealed: “Investments for putting the California branch alone costs about the same as opening four Gerry’s Grill branches here in Manila.”

Since Gerry’s is 100-percent Filipino-owned, you would expect that it would hire Filipinos for its staff. But Villaluz said such a policy is prohibited in California. “Antiracist laws are strict there,” he said. “So we had to get a mix of workers—white and black Americans, Mexicans, Filipinos.”

The food selection will also differ from what Gerry’s offers in the Philippines, for it is hard to source some of the ingredients, such as vinegar, tamarind for the sinigang and the seafood.

“We’re lucky to have put up a restaurant in California at a time when several stores there have started selling native Filipino seasonings,” Villaluz added. “But Gerry is still looking out for more stores there that could supply us with authentic Filipino ingredients. He wants the taste to be as closest as possible to the food we have developed here.”

There will also be slight changes in the taste of the food, particularly grilled seafood, “because we have a different variety of fish in the Philippines, and the taste is really different when you compare, for example their variety of tuna and blue marlin from ours.”

One of the most expensive requirements for opening a restaurant-bar in California, however, is securing a liquor permit. Villaluz said that while getting a license to serve hard liquor here is just a matter of days and a few hundred pesos, the case is contrary in the United States. “They have the most expensive charge for a liquor permit!” Villaluz exclaimed. “It could cost the equivalent of thousands of pesos!”

All the same, it’s all systems go for the opening of Gerry’s Grill California in December—if everything goes well as planned. Its opening will be almost simultaneous with the launch of Gerry’s Grill in Ali Mall, Cubao. Next year, three more branches will follow—at the SM Mall of Asia in February, one in Tagbilaran City, Bohol and another one in Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

Highlighting these openings are new selections from the menu, the development of which was also supervised by Apolinario during his brief stay in Manila in July and August. New dishes include the appetizers basked scallops and tahong a la pobre, entreés like steamed pla-pla and bagnet, and rice dishes such as adobong puso, crab, bagoong and veggie.

Come January, Apolinario intends to hold a major retraining for all of Gerry’s staff “based on the stricter measures we have learned from putting up the California branch,” added Villaluz.

As compared to its closest competitor in the business, Gerry’s has a much younger profile, but it has certainly lived up to its long-running slogan, which goes, “You’d rather be at Gerry’s,” with a strong market base, an established name in the food industry, and a well-developed product line.

“Our strength actually lies in the consistent taste of our food, which doesn’t really taste like traditional Filipino food,” said Gerry’s Arlene Laurenciano. “Each dish is cooked with a distinct flavor that you will find nowhere else.”

P700M Quezon Eco tourism road underway
Friday, January 26 2007 @ 06:05 PM GMT

The construction of the 29.42 kilometer Quezon Eco Tourism road, which traverses Tayabas Bay from San Juan, Batangas to Lucena City, is now underway.

Second District Rep. Proceso J. Alcala said construction of the Quezon Eco Tourism road is meant to decongest vehicular traffic along the Maharlika Highway section of the second district of Quezon province.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Second Engineering District head Celestial S. Flancia, said the road sections in Sariaya now under construction are the Barangay Guiguis-Bantilan section (10.20 km), Barangay Salinas-Guisguis section (10.72 km) and the Isabang junction-Salinas section (8.50 km). All in all, the road projects will cost 700 million pesos.

Engineer Flancia said her office has completed negotiations with more than 95 percent of the landowners in Sariaya in connection with the right of way for the affected areas.

Second District Rep. Proceso J. Alcala is now following up with Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane and DPWH Regional Director Bonifacio Seguit the early completion of the Quezon eco-tourism road for the benefit of travellers and motorists between San Juan Batangas and Lucena City.

Rep. Alcala added the completion of the project would be a big boost to the ecology and tourism potentials of both Quezon and Batangas provinces which abound with tourist attractions. (PNA)

History of Lucena City National High School

The Lucena City National High School started as Ibabang Dupay National High School (IDNHS) located at Ibabang Dupay Lucena City. It was founded on July 16, 1993 through the Republic Act 1192. It was initiated by Dr. Leonora Guerrero, division superintendent and with the help of Dr. Azucena Romulo, Asst. Division Superintendent, Mrs.Villabrosa, Elvira Razon Aranilla Elementary School (ERAES) principal, Mr. Ricardo Orinday and Mr. Rolando Ingles, Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) President. During the school years, Dr. Guerrero wants to change the school’s name as Science National High School but the students’ average is not fit to the standard of education. Based on the survey, the students can’t reach the average for the curriculum as Science High School and that gives way to stick with their principles.

The IDNHS has only one building with two classrooms donated by Cong. Jun Punzalan. At that time, the school ground is still a rice field and full of mud, they have their school canteen under the stairs and their comfort rooms were improvised. On 1993, the school has only three teachers; they are Mrs. Encomienda, Mr. Metierre and Mrs. Importante. The pioneer teachers get their salary at the Malacañang and it takes a long time for them to get their salaries with the great help of Mr. Ricardo Orinday. There are only 79 first year students that time. After a couple of months, Mrs. Encomienda left the school and substituted by Mrs. Filomena Bayani and Mrs. Mina Importante substituted by Mrs. Mayami David and Mrs. Lolita Santa Ana was the Officer-in-Charge, Division English Supervisor.

A year later, July 16 1994, Mrs. Epifania F. Carandang, Mr. Pablito R. Alay and Mrs. Evengeline Nieva were the new comer teachers who became a part of IDNHS faculty. Annually, the school has improvements with the help of City Government and National Government and other sectors.

On 1999, Mrs. Epifania F. Carandang became a school head teacher and after a year she was promoted as a school principal. Due to the population of the students who want to study at Ibabang Dupay National High School, a different extension from Cotta and Dalahican was build. The computer room and the laboratory were also constructed.

On 2002, through the resolution of the City Government, Ibabang Dupay National High School became Lucena City National High School.

After 3 years, another extension was built in Gulang-gulang and a total of 108 teachers.

At present, the Lucena City National High School has a Gymnasium constructed during the administration of Mayor Ramon Y. Talaga, Jr. There are already eight (8) buildings with the help of the different sectors. The school prides itself with over 10 years of dedication to providing quality education. From the vision of the school, it develops young people who are imbued with desirable traits, knowledgeable, productivity, skillful, creative and responsible students and citizens of the country nurtured by competent and effective teachers supported by the community.

oh may goodness! hindi ko alam kung matutuwa ako o maawa ako sa Bayan ng Tayabas, Quezon, this is Lucena's Mother town and for me the town is not ready for now to become a city.ang bayan ng Tayabas ay kumikita lamang ng 4 million annual gross income. nakakaawa ang mga business dito kaya pala nag push ang Bayan ng Tayabas na mag pagawa ng isang government own na commercial center. i think kung may magiging city man thas the town of, Bacoor,Dasmariñas of Cavite,San Juan of metro manila,Canlubang of Laguna,Sto. Tomas of Batangas, Mauban with annual income of 197millionof Quezon province ito ang pasok sa Category based sa bagong batas....Sariaya-20million,Candelaria-27million,and Pagbilao47million of Quezon Province.Daraga of Albay with 63 million.i think yan ang dapat maging City.

PhP 4M? That's impossible. A sixth class city has to have PhP-60M annual groos income. Kung PhP4M lang ang kita ng Tayabas, then hindi pwedeng maging city yan kahit sixth class city. Maybe umabot na sa PhP 60M ang kita nila.

These requirements, Lim said, are:

1. An average annual income as certified by the Department of Finance of at least R20 million for the last two consecutive years based on 1991 constant prices.(?)

2. It has a contiguous territory of at least 100 square kilometers as certified by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Tayabas is Exempted here

3. It has a population of not less than 150,000 as certified by the National Statistics Office (NSO). Tayabas population was nearly 70+ thousand Census 2000 (failed) to this category

Lim said all the 12 were categorized as first-class municipalities with gross income of at least R70 million as of the 2005 Commission on Audit (CoA) report. Tayabas IRA 75Million,kinikita 4 million

Based on 1991's prices... This means that, the income required based on 1991 constant prices is the income of the town or city if and only if, there were no increases in prices from 1991 to present.

ic, thank you for the information utol. medyo nakakalito kasi pag sinabing income ng isang town. bukod pa ang IRA and LGU gross income...yeah napakalabong hindi nagtaas ng prices since 1991 mayat maya ang taas ng presyo kaya less consider na rin yan.
