Background:
Comoros has endured 19 coups or attempted coups since gaining independence from France in 1975. In 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli declared independence from Comoros. In 1999, military chief Col. AZALI seized power in a bloodless coup, and helped negotiate the 2000 Fomboni Accords power-sharing agreement in which the federal presidency rotates among the three islands, and each island maintains its own local government. AZALI won the 2002 Presidential election, and each island in the archipelago elected its own president. AZALI stepped down in 2006 and President SAMBI took office. Since 2006, Anjouan's President Mohamed BACAR has refused to work effectively with the Union presidency. This year BACAR effected Anjouan's de-facto secession from the Union, refusing to step down in favor of fresh Anjouanais elections when Comoros' other islands held legitimate elections in July. The African Union (AU) has stepped in to assist in resolving the political crisis, including applying sanctions and a naval blockade on Anjouan, but the situation remains at an impasse.

Economy - overview:
One of the world's poorest countries, Comoros is made up of three islands that have inadequate transportation links, a young and rapidly increasing population, and few natural resources. The low educational level of the labor force contributes to a subsistence level of economic activity, high unemployment, and a heavy dependence on foreign grants and technical assistance. Agriculture, including fishing, hunting, and forestry, contributes 40% to GDP, employs 80% of the labor force, and provides most of the exports. The country is not self-sufficient in food production; rice, the main staple, accounts for the bulk of imports. The government - which is hampered by internal political disputes - is struggling to upgrade education and technical training, privatize commercial and industrial enterprises, improve health services, diversify exports, promote tourism, and reduce the high population growth rate. The political problems caused the economy to contract in 2007. Remittances from 150,000 Comorans abroad help supplement GDP.

Carver02 March 11th, 2008, 10:57 PM No one's thanked you guys yet? Thanks for the pics Matthias and Storm.
This is a beautiful country, but it could sure use some urban redevelopment.
Lagbuja March 11th, 2008, 11:02 PM Nice pictures, but I jave one question, why are they so poor comapred to the Seychelles, what makes them so different?
André March 12th, 2008, 04:15 AM Peculiar! Nice beaches..
Skyprince March 12th, 2008, 08:07 PM Impressive and gorgeous Comoros , thanks Matt and SS !
Lagbuja March 28th, 2008, 02:21 AM Why in the hell is this country so poor compared to the Seychelles and Mauritius?
They are basically geaographically the same and tiny populations but comoros is poorer, why?
youza October 5th, 2008, 07:57 AM No doubt. This is probably due in greater part to mismanagement. After viewing and comparing the photos of the Seychelles, Mauritius and the Comorros, I would say I like the photo taken in the Comorros. It gives me a totally different perspective.
briker October 7th, 2008, 06:46 AM The islands itself are gorgeous...pity for it's pathetic state. Thanks for posting though

What is Arab tourism?
Dentist September 4th, 2009, 08:26 PM What is Arab tourism?
Is it so difficult to understand??
Comoros would benefit tremendously if Arabs, esp. from the Gulf states, would seek to travel to it.. instead of benefitting those who despise them, like yourself.. I don't know what your problem is.. you opened a thread about Juba as if t were a capital of a country called South Sudan.. stop fueling flames of hatred.. it would be nice to focus on your country's own problems and why they keep slaughtering each other.

I have been to the Seychelles and it is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. At least by looking at those pictures I can hardly see how the Comoros are "more" beautiful than the Seychelles.
The Seychellois islands are generally renowned for their unique bio diversity. La Digue has some of the most iconic beaches in the world, Praslin allows for amazing jungle hikes, Aldabra is home to the giant tortoise and Victoria, the capital located on the main island Mahé, is very quaint and rather well-maintained. The people are very friendly and tolerant, all major religions maintain houses of worship in that tiny country, and the government is widely credited for offering highly sustainable tourism.
The Seychelles' reputation and success in tourism are absolutely well deserved.
Anyway, I agree that the Comoros should and could do much more to increase its appeal.

Except it's NOT an Arab country. The language spoken in the Comoros is Comorian, an African language with strong ties to Swahili. The administrative language is French. Arabic is only the language used in the Koranic schools, like in the rest of the Muslim world, and the Comorians do not feel they are Arab.

I agree. Plus their Islamic/African architecture and authentic culture, they have what it takes to be a top tourist destination.

Paperyostrich November 29th, 2012, 06:02 PM What a pity such god-blessed islands are in such a state of disrepair and poverty.
Compare with the Seychelles - why does it have the highest HDI in Africa, whiles the Comoros is so dirt-poor?
Well since 1975, when the Comoros declared independence from France, the island's have been more or less in a continuous state if instability. I think it's been only the last two elections that have actually been peaceful in any respect. The Comoros islands have gone through leaders like there is no tomorrow!
Also there aren't very many resources on the islands and few tourist facilities, also the instability has scared away investors so that's probably why. The Seychelles on the other hand have been relativly peaceful and have been developing sing they gained independence in 1976, whereas the Comoros have been stagnant more or less.
Lastly it seems that all of the islands in that area are dirt poor, even nthe French colony of Mayotte. It's technically part of France, and yet it is dirt poor, so maybe it's to do with location as well?
Adm.Adama December 1st, 2012, 11:59 PM Africans can start making this island into a paradise the mainland has millionaire and billionaires sitting on cash they should dump into Comoros and finally bring it to life... Tax Free Zone anyone

SUNS 25 April 21st, 2013, 04:23 AM This country has many challenges to overcome. Economic and social situation remains poor. Tourism should be a priority to increase the revenue of the state. They must take the example of the Seychelles.
