Hello!

Yesterday I read in the newspaper that Bratislava region still has the second highest GDP per capita (PPP) from all new EU countries (Prague is the first) with 147,9 percent of EU average (Prague 160 percent).

I would like to know the data about Ljubljana region (if there is) or Slovenia as a whole. Thank you very much

Actually of all new EU members the richest capital (it isn't a region though) must be Nicosia (don't know the stats). Finding data for Ljubljana without surroundings is a pain in the ass.

Well, I see that you are right. It seems that Slovenia as a whole country is recognized as 1 EU region only instead of more regions in Slovakia and other countries... At least from this pictures.

Here you have the percentage of the Slovenian statistical regions in 2005. Osrednjeslovenska (statistična regija) = Central Slovenian (statistical region), but it's much more than just Ljubljana, b/c it includes 500,000 inhabitants (Ljubljana is just 250,000-300,000):

http://www.stat.si/eng/PrikaziSliko.aspx?id=1896
http://www.stat.si/eng/novica_prikazi.aspx?id=1318

With Eurostats data you can easily calculate the percentage of the EU average.

New (2005)data came out. Slovenia is divided in 2 regions. West Slovenia is at 104% of EU average, and East Slovenia is at 71% of EU avg. They both have 1 million population.

2007 data shows that Slovenia is at 91,2% of EU average.

And believe me these figures of capital regions are not relevant at all. If someone is living near Vienna and works in Vienna GDP will be artificially higher.
Whole central Slovenia (Capital + 2x of population) is at 138% of EU avg.
On TV they said that Ljubljana GDP is 2,5x of Slovenia average.

But who cares:lol: Salaries are more important. Ljubljana had avg salary at 1040€ a month, my Maribor had 910€, and important fact is that Slovenia has registred unemployment at 6,8% while ILO is 4,3%:)

Combining Eurostat data with Slovenian Statistics Office data, GDP per capita (PPP) of Central SLO region is 125% of the EU average. According to my estimates, GDP per capita (PPP) of Ljubljana (toghether with another municipality, Ljubljana is the richest NUTS-3(4) region in Slovenia) should be somewhere between 160 and 200% of the Slovenian average. This should translate into something between 140 and 175% of EU average.

Okay, thank you for the explanation. I understand that the capitals in Europe are almost always something like "state in the state". So if LJ GDP/capita (PPP) is 2.5x SI average, it is 228 percent of EU, what is pretty nice!

But... are you sure that average salary (I mean gross salary) in Ljubljana is (only) 1040€/month? In Bratislava, it is around 820€, but I heard that the average salary in Slovenia is around 1200€!

Anyway, isn't it strange that the gross salary is 70 percent higher than netto salary?? For example, in Bratislava, when I have 900€/month, I get 700€ netto, so the difference is up to 30 percent.

Alexandros O'Megalos
February 13th, 2008, 05:59 PM
In fact you have to take gross salary as the basis for your calculation. So if you do that there is no way you get 70% difference. Differences between gross and net salaries in Slovenia are up to 50%, which is not unique in the EU. Similar situation is in Belgium and I am sure there are other countires as well. One thing is sure: Slovenian public sector is expensive, hence, amongst others, the need for high taxes and social contibutions!!

If your gross salary would be 900€ in Slovenia, your netto salary would be 628€.

As Alexandroas said we have expensive public sector.

But who cares. When you negotiate with your employer you negotiate about NETTO salary and not GROSS:lol:

I would simply not give up free healthcare, dentists, university studies for few % higher salary:)

Actually average Croatian NET pay is 710-724 Euros and in EE only Slovenia has higher NET/Gross pays.

Croatian NET pay for November last year was 5135 kuna, should hit 5250 kuna average for 2008, 5850 kuna for 2009 and 6500 kuna in 2010. Currently 1 Euro = 7.25 kuna.

PS, gross pay in Croatia is 1065 Euros, Zagreb has 20% higher average pay than the rest of the country.

I guess that Croatian salaries are quite high compared to nominal GDP. If Slovenia would have such high ratio avg salary would be 1400€.

But anyways November salaries are not exactly releveant since they are strongly influenced by 13th salary. Slovenian avg salary for whole 2007 is around 870€.

p.s.: Are you really dreaming that avg salary in Croatia will be 900€ in 2010? From 630€ in 2007 up for 45% in just 3 years? Common its not like Croatia is Dubai:lol::lol:

p.s.: By my calculations Croatian avg. salary will be 757€ in 2010 (5506 Kura), and Slovenian 1033€, and believe me i can calculate things. I correctly forecasted Slovenian salaries 3 months in advance:lol:(unless inflation is above 7% my numbers will probably be closer to reality:lol:)

p.s.3: Croatian salaries wont go up that fast also because currently it is high unemployment of less educated people. When these people will presumably get job(an unemployment will be lower) they will "destroy" average with lovering it.

Going back salary of 1050 neto in Slovenia. It is very good and quite surprising. 1050 is around $1550 Canadian. In order to make that much, you need to be earning $15 per hour gross pay. That is just to give you an idea.

Actually if I use made up data natrually I'd say things he said, but if you follow the links you'll find he didn't do his research well. 2007, 20008, 2009, 2010, - 45% is not that much when you spread average over 4 years. As to him being an economist, I doubt that, I can say all kinds of crap on forums, his behavior thus far only points in the opposite direction. As to the economist, once he has BSC next to his name, than he can be called an economist, BTW, I studied economics and International relations, so I know few things about economics and future forecasting, after all I did work for major investment bank here in London.

BTW my original forecasting for pays in Croatia was.

5200 - 2008
5500 - 2009
5850 - 2010

but than I looked at the research and revised my estimates.

Pays in Croatia AND Slovenia have increased much faster than the annual inflation rate.

In 2006 Average NET pay in Slovenia was 774 Euros, (232 000 Tolars) I'll have to check data published by Slovene National Bank, but say if it is 870 Euros now, this is an increase of 12.5% in less than 14 months or if we use this as our rate of growth- 42.85% over 4 year period.

MBM is saying 945 Euros, well that would mean in less than 14 months (December 2006 - February 2008) average pay in Slovenia increased by 22%, or 4 annual forecast of 84.48%.

Slovenia is not Dubai either ;)

Among our Croatian forumers we have 7-8 Economist, well 4-5 are still students of economy (one of them is a 3rd year top A student, top 5 in his class of 250) and 2-3 are working as economist, so you can say we have delectable bunch of brains and minds which can always give you few of their thoughts on our discussions here. But not to turn this thread in to a spam fest lets concentrate on pays in Slovenia and Slovakia as this thread was intended and leave Croatia out of this discussions, that seems to me a fair proposition.

It's probably slightly bigger, b/c it's data for November 2007. Compared to November 2006 it increased 7.1 %. Here (http://www.ljubljana.si/file/737714/infdec2007.pdf) you can see (it's in Slovenian) at the beginning of the second page, it says: in Slovenia the average gross wage in November (2007) was 1,491.65 €, which is an increase of 7.1 % compared to November 2006 (1,392.76 € obviously). The average net wage was 945.34 € (882.67 € in November 2006 obviously, so it couldn't've been just 774 € in December 2006).
The second paragraph talks about the Ljubljana City Municipality: gross 1,788.19 €, net 1,101.05 €.

thanx m8, just had a look, I think I made an error in exchange rate, I confused USD and Euro exchange rate, average gross pay in Slovenia for 2006 was 278 000 Tolars, and I 1 Euro = 240 Tolars, it comes average gross pay in Slovenia in 2006 (average) was 1160 Euros. Dear Mic. Why do you bother explainig me if my posts are meaningles:nuts:

I think you are nationalistic. And please dont be offended im constatly laughing at your "numbers".
Slovenian avg salary in november (946€) was heavily influenced by 13th salary (so was Slovakian and Croatian).
Average salary for 2007 was around 845€, and annual growth was 7%.
So if this trend will continue avg salary will be 904€ for 2008, 967€ for 2009 and finally and 1034€ for 2010 .

And let me explain why I said Croatia is not Dubai (symbol of fast development). And again what i will write is not meant to offend someone and im NOT being nationalistic, and yes Slovenia has more or less same problems:

-Unemployment is still very high( instead of receiving funds from taxes, money goes to social transfers)
-Very high debt
-Very high nominal salaries compared to low nominal GDP and productivity
-High differences between regions
-disputes with all neigbours expect Hungary (both economical and border)
-expensive labour force compared to productivity rate
-a lot of educated people moved out of the country
-not member of EU and Nato

and no Croatia cant survive only with tourism.

This all will result in slowing of economic growth. Slovenia had higher economic growth in 2006 and 2007 altough Slovenian nominal (not PPP) GDP is 2x of Croatian.

And your new "forecast" for 2010 is probably more correct, altough I think Croatian avg salary will be a bit higher (because of inflation).

p.s.: My personal opinion about you:
You always desperatly try to show yourself as the smartest and important person on this forum. You were "bragging" how you were speaking with our defense minister, now you added "I did work for major investment bank here in London", you were warning me i will get banned, like you are some kind of moderator here (as far as I know only 3tmk , OettingerCroat and Edolen are), on the other hand you are being offensive towards me with "I really don't give a monkey's arse. "

And you really studied " I studied economics and International relations" ??
Common you dont even see difference between November and ordinary salaries. Your first "forecasts" were childish. I mean I can understand Sanader that he promised 50% higher salaries before elections:nuts:
And yes Im only economics student, but my father, mother, grandfather, grandmother all finished university studies about economics and business and if i dont know something i ask some of them about their opinion. And my father almost died from laughing when i showed him your post.

He recomends you to become politican:lol:

Hey, where did I say I spoke to defense minister of Slovenia. Perhaps you confuse defense ministry with the defense minster.

As to me working for major investment bank, I did work, I no longer work.
As to your ban, well you were talking shit and posting crap, being a total troll and nuisance; I mean ppl no longer take any notice what you say. As to your arguments, all are political, your hate of Croatia is quite clear, your hateful undertone towards all and everything Croatian is so evident someone has to tell you to your face.

You continue to provoke Croats in to some sort of argument that you can't possibly win but try to provoke so other Slovens can join you bashing Croats.

As to your dad, I really do not care what he thinks and says, or for that matter you.

Also...

Your racist remarks on DLM and your blunt racism is so evident, did you know if NAZI were still in charge, you'd be first to go to gas chamber, they hated Gays. Even now in Germany Neo-Nazis attack Gay clubs...

You are weirdest racist bigot I've ever came across.

Im not provoking Croatians:nuts: Cant you accept any other statements about Croatia except "lijepa vaša"
True Croats are not that closed-minded as you are.

Where does your nationalism come from? You cant even write in Croatian.
As a matter of fact even I probably "pišem i govorim Hrvatski nego ti" ("write and speak Croatian better than you" since you probably didnt understand).

p.s.: So what is your education and what is your job occupation if I may ask
p.s.: I just looooovveeee to tease you:)
