Got this idea for a new thread just as a change to all the design talk. Dont think it has been done before?
With all the new radical designs there are some interesting names cropping up-the names must be ones that have been adopted by the local community around the stadium area not just one you made up!
Start you off
New Zenit St Petersburg stadium 'The Spaceship'
Beijing Olympic 'the birds nest'

I think that's the first thread about Stadiums' nicknames.

So, You can find "Spaceships and Theatres" - Stadiums also in Italy (even if they are not very recent):
- Meazza Stadium (La Scala, the theatre of city of Milan)
- San Nicola Stadium in Bari (the spaceship - l'astronave, is the name in italian).

serious ones:

Amsterdam Arena aka 'Rinus Michels Stadion' (under Ajacoids)

Euroborg, Groningen: 'The green hell' or 'The Green Cathedral'
this place has two nicknames. both pointing at the collors of the club (FC Groningen). The supporters, the press and the rest of 'football' in The Netherlands is using both. So, it is the only place in the world (as far as I know) the hell and a church is comming together.

not so serious ones:
Amsterdam Arena aka 'the ufo', 'that ugly thing', 'crop field'
De kuip, rotterdam aka 'the bathtub'

@sercan:
1. the "Biggest cabriolet of the world" is the WALDSTADION and not a f***ing C***-Arena
2. this is not a nickname. a silly politician used this term but it's not a nickname. It's always just the Waldstadion. Or going to the stadium was often described as gehen "in den Wald", that's it.

Btw, St Pauli's stadium (the Freudenhaus) name is Millerntorstadion.

I dont agree that the "de Kuip" isn't a serious nickname. It's used by the whole country and the clubs biggest fans. It isn't a insult but it just points out the shape of stadium. And it cant be an insult, because it the most loved stadium in the Netherlands.

if you've read my post i've used it as a serious name. every one is calling it de kuip. fans, press, foe's, knvb.. anyone. 'de badkuip (bathtub)' is the not so serious one..

This one is cool. ;)

St.Jakob-Park in Basel (engl.: St.James, span.: Santiago (!))

The local population calls it "Joggeli" which is a real nickname, meaning it's the local nickname of small boys called Jakob. Now, Jakob has become extremely out-of-fashion as a name nowadays. I know only one person with this name - the coach of the Swiss National Football Team, Jakob Kuhn. ;)

But his nickname is "Köbi", not "Joggeli", because he's from Zurich, not from Basel. Anyway, funny as it is, probably one of the last living Swiss people with the name Jakob will lead his team during all 3 group-games at EURO 08 in the St.Jakob stadium hopefully into the Quarter-Finals. If this happens, "St.Jakob" will get a whole new meaning.... ;)

The stadium is located at the spot where in 1444 the Battle of St.Jakob an der Birs took place, something like the Swiss version of the Battle of Thermopylae, known from the film "300":

Therefore we hope that Shell will buy the naming rights of the new stadium. :D

I think its was called "The Hell" by the foreign press, coaches and players, because of the atmosphere in combiantion of the flares and the colours of GS.

Celtic weren't formed by Hibs players (actually Catholic preists for the benefit of Irish immigrants) but that's how they got their initial success as the players came to work in the factories and ship building industry in Glasgow. This success pulled in the wider Catholic support to make Celti c a big club.

Another nickname of the feyenoord stadium is: de voetbaltempel (The footballtemple)

That is not a nickname, it's another word for a (impressive) stadium in dutch. I found "voetbaltempel" for the first time on google related to feyenoord on page 6 on google.

If it comes to the first 20 hits, the following clubs/organisations and their current or future stadiums are mentioned:

-3x Ajax
-3x AC Milan
-2x Arsenal
-2x World Cup Stadium South-Africa
-2x Standard Luik
-FC Groningen
-AA Gent
-Chinese stadium for the Olympics
-Roda JC
-Small local clubs ODC and OHL
-2 times metioned in general

In Brazil, most stadiums are officially named after some important or famous personalities.

Ever heard about the worldwide famous MARACANÃ stadium, which hosted the final match of the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, with a crowd of 200.000 people?

Well, Maracanã is just a NICKNAME!!!

Maracanã
Real Name: Jornalista Mário Filho
nickname is name of the neighborhood where the stadium is located
http://newsfut.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/maracana-soccer-stadium1.jpg

Morumbi
Real Name: Cícero Pompeu de Toledo
nickname is name of the neighborhood where the stadium is located
http://baixaki.ig.com.br/imagens/wpapers/BXK1406_morumbi800.jpg

Beira Rio
Real Name: José Pinheiro Borba
nickname is based on the location of the stadium, at the margins of a river. (Beira Rio literally means River Shore)
http://ricardolampert.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/beirario_edit.jpg

Mineirão
Real Name: Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto
nickname is based on the fact its the main stadium at Minas Gerais state. Mineiro is something related to Minas Gerais. The suffix "ão" in portuguese serves to say something is BIG. Thus, Mineirão is a big "Mineiro".
http://www.pbh.gov.br/urbal10/imagens/bh-mineirao.jpg

Arena da Baixada
Real Name: Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães
Official Brand Name: Kyocera Arena
this stadium received the name Kyocera Arena, because Kyocera bought the naming rights. But the public still calls it Arena da Baixada (nickname), because its located at the Baixada area of the city.

Goodison Park is often referred to as the Grand Old Lady.

Aye, Goodison has had a few nicknames over the years, from 'Toffeeopolis' in its early days, and 'The School of Science' (a tagline for the calculated and precise football the team played, often linked to the stadium itself).

When you make the new stadium, the nickname of goodison will be tesco or sainsburys!!
Seriously a real shame, firstly sad to see any stadium demolished good or bad as its history and secondly its an archibald leitch stand stadium!

Couldn't agree more. The day (hopefully it never comes) Goodison Park gets demolished would be a sad day for Everton and world football. The people who appreciate proper football stadiums will agree. Players from Dixie Dean to Pele have played here hosting great Everton matches as well World Cup '66 games. Also Dixie Dean is buried on the half way line so that in itself is sacrilege.

Most stadiums in England already have what I'd consider fairly 'romantic' names anyway so most just get abbreviated rather than given nicknames. White Hart Lane becomes "the Lane", Stamford Bridge becomes "the Bridge", Craven Cottage becomes "the Cottage". etc. etc.

The day before, they lost 67-66 to Louisville, who is considered an elite DI program. I dunno how much of U of L's starting personnel played--the game was played in September, just after college basketball teams begin practice--but it was an impressive show of fortitude by Carleton, nonetheless.

The calibre of basketball in the NCAA is undeniably higher, but the gap seems to be closing each passing year. Almost all of Canada's best high school basketball players opt to play at NCAA schools. If Canadian schools did a better job keeping talent in Canada, scores like the one above would become far more common.

The scholarship issue was addressed. Now the CIS has to work to build upon attendance and television audiences to generate a larger revenue base for the various programs. Once we see more parity here, the rest should follow.

BMO Field -- Often referred to as simply "BMO"

Rogers Centre -- Still called the Skydome by the majority of Blue Jays fans

Maple Leaf Gardens -- Usually abbreviated as "MLG" in text. In speech is usually called simply "the Gardens." Also nicknamed the "Grand Old Lady On Carlton." The "Carlton Street Cashbox" is often used mistakenly. The term actually refers to the wall safe found inside the building but since the building itself is in a box shape and the Leafs rake in the most money in the NHL and always have really, the name started to be used to refer to the building.
