View Full Version : United Airlines Merger
DUBAI2015 February 14th, 2008, 03:08 AM What airline do you think will merge with United? I think Northwest because they both operate 747-400s and they have attention from United.
EDIT: Now I know that there is a better chance of United + Continental. (And Delta + Northwest)
FM 2258 February 14th, 2008, 03:39 AM None. I don't want to see any of these airlines merger. I like the variety we still have.
Sen February 14th, 2008, 04:54 AM DoT will kill any United-Northwest because they will have overlappping routes (Pacific, and West coast) which is not good for competition. I think United Will merge with Delta or rather Continental will merge with Northwest. Or Continental with Delta.
ddes February 14th, 2008, 04:51 PM Best combo would be United and Continental...
Both networks are almost complimentary, United with Asia Pacific routes, Continental with European routes. And besides, Continental is the more useless of the trio (Delta, Northwest, Continental) in terms of importance to the Skyteam alliance.
Bahnsteig4 February 14th, 2008, 04:58 PM NW would not be the best match just because they operate 744s. As was said, their routes overlap on a large scale. CO is much more likely, IMO.
NW and DL are about to merge. If UA and CO merge, too, this will leave AA behind. What about AA+AS? Similar fleets, a new SEA hub?
GlasgowMan February 14th, 2008, 06:45 PM I would like to see US Airways and United merge, if any have to that is.

Last time I bought a ticket with U.S. Airways, half of my flights were on United so I can see that working but I'd hate to see more airlines leave our skies.
Continental seems to code share with Delta while Northwest and American Airlines are usually on their own. My last continental flight started off with a Delta flight from AUS to ATL.

NORTHWEST IS MERGING WITH DELTA. COUNT DELTA AND NORTHWEST OUT.
littlearea February 15th, 2008, 05:49 AM UA merge with US airways are better because both from Star Alliance.
Bahnsteig4 February 15th, 2008, 05:59 PM ^^ That doesn't matter at all!
US and UA's routes overlap too much for the DoT to allow that merger, as well.
(HP and UA in the west, US and UA in the east).
nomarandlee February 15th, 2008, 06:09 PM Yea, United wants to be stronger in NYC and have better Latin American and European routes which Continental would help with. Continental would like to be in on the Chicago hub and the West coast presence of United as well as have a real Pacific network. Both line up well.
I don't see what Delta gets out of hooking up with Northwest as much even though there would be obvious improvement. Northwest just doesn't have nearly the same quality of assets that Continental and United have to offer each other.
eomer February 15th, 2008, 09:56 PM - Delta and Nothwest (like Air France - KLM) will soon merge together an Continental will follow.
- American won't merge with anobody.
- So, United will by US Airways.
bagel February 15th, 2008, 10:12 PM I really don't want them to merge. Continental is one of my favorite airlines and United is one of my least favorite. Continental has some pretty good service for coach, and they actually serve food in domestic flights, unlike most other US airlines. I've gotten poor treatment, poor service, poor everything with United. They're just one step above American in my book and that's pretty darn bad.
But as echoed by the Continental CEO a couple of days ago, though Continental prefers to stay independent, it must face up to the reality of the mega-airline in today's aviation world.

^^ Jesus Christ calm down, I didn't know that when I wrote this thread.

You can't do anything about it if they want to merge or not, they've got to do whatever it takes to stay afloat and be in business... it's just the way it is. Either you buy their product or go for another...

Me too! The more, the better.
Smallville February 16th, 2008, 05:40 PM 1. Delta and NWA will merge.
2. United and Continental will merge.
3. US Airways and American will sit this one out for the time being.
US Airways is sitting in a good position right now. They will probably get a few gates due to these mergers. DOT will make the four airlines that are merging give up some of their gates in certain markets.
American is the largest airline in the country. They don't need to merge with anyone at this time.
All of these airlines are starting to focus more on international flights to increase their revenues due to the stiff competition from the low fare carriers domestically.
What do you guys think will be the surviving names of the merged airlines?
I think that the Delta name and the United name will survive. They will get rid of NWA and Continental. Of course I like the sound of Continental better than United.
Trae February 17th, 2008, 12:41 AM ^^If they get rid of Continental's name, the HQ would be in Houston.
It looks like a Continental-United merger will happen, with Continental's CEO will be the CEO of the merged company. I think this would make Continental-United the largest airline, with Delta-Northwest coming in second, and American in third.
Isn't United the one that just recently came out of bankruptcy (or very close to it)? I doubt that the same CEO that that happened under would be the head CEO of a Continental-United company. So, with Kellner keeping the CEO position, the HQ should remain in Houston.
Looks to me that the HQ would remain in Houston. With Houston also being cheaper to live in. Continental being the more prosperous airline and having the better name recognition (positively) is the reason.
So:
1. Houston is cheaper
2. Is growing faster
3. Not as sprawled
4. Airport is not as crowded

1- Yes
2- No: UA is member of Star Alliance and Continental is member of Skyteam
3- US Airways is member of Star Alliance and AA is member of One World.
So, the answer is:
US Airways will merge with United Airline or maybe with Air Canada.
GlasgowMan February 17th, 2008, 01:21 AM IMO, Continental’s product has been getting worse and worse in recent years. I don’t use them allot, maybe one or two return trips a year, flying GLA-EWR-???-EWR-GLA. They were, at one time my favourite airline to cross the pond with from Glasgow but now I much prefer American Airlines and US Airways over Continental.

Please forget about the alliances. They really won't matter at all.
However, I really believe that US/AA won't work for a variety of reasons. UA and CO WILL work, though. Quite obviously, the choice would be Star Alliance, then.
I still hope for AA/AS.

Many disagree with you, as their awards have increased over the past few years. American Airlines is the truck stop in the sky.

Continental is not deeply involved in Skyteam and could/will join Star Alliance in a merger (or the other way around).

My main complaint is the 757 over the pond, don’t know why but I just don’t like it, I’m used to doing 2/3 hour flights on 757s, not 6/7 hours.
When Continental used the Boeing 767-400 on GLA-EWR it was great, but now they operate at a higher frequency but with a 757 I’m less of a fan.
AA and US still use widebody’s from GLA.

UA and Continental are in serious talks. Doesn't matter about the alliance. These two airlines compliment one another. It is a good fit. Just like Delta and NWA are a good fit.
US Airways merged with America West a couple of years ago. They tried to merge with Delta last year. US Airways and Air Canada are an interesting scenerio but not sure if US or Canadian regulators would allow that to happen. If a foreign airline was going to merge with US Airways. I think that it would be British Airways more than likely.
The legacy carriers are getting their clocks cleaned by the low fare carriers such as Southwest, Jet Blue, and a few others. Like the up and coming Skybus which is runned by veterans from Southwest and Ryan Air.
The legacy carriers have to merge to create better economies of scale in order to compete domestically and internationally in this new world of ours. Don't forget the US population is supposed to grow to 420 million by 2050 so there will be plenty of folks flying. Not counting the world population growth.

I can't blame you for not wanting to fly on a 757 across the pond. That is a rather uncomfortable ride. I think Continental has ordered quite a few of the 787 dreamliners that are coming out next year. The 787 might take over for the 757 and the 767 in the near future.
Sen February 17th, 2008, 08:18 AM Foreign interest cannot have more than 25% controlling stake in Air Canada, therefore any merger invovling Air Canada is unlikely.
UA and CO ARE in talks at the moment, I don't see alliance being a problem, airlines join and quit alliances all the time, Air Canada(*Alliance) also merged with Canadian Airlines (Oneworld)

Now I know that there is a better chance of United + Continental, and Delta + Northwest Lol I was just empathizing it's importance so nobody votes for Delta or Northwest. If I was yelling I'd use exclamation points.
