The Grand Indonesia Tower shines brightly along the main boulevard in Jakarta.

Perhaps the most spectacular video cladding has been applied to the Grand Indonesia Tower in Jakarta. The 3.7-million-sq.-ft., mixed-use center, which is still under construction, features retail stores, a hotel and, as its centerpiece, a 57-story office tower.

The building was created by Darryl Yamamoto, AIA, director of Austin Veum Robbins Partners (AVRP) and Mixed Use Studio, both of Los Angeles (AVRP also has a San Diego office). Yamamoto was formerly with RTKL, where he designed the project.

"Essentially, the LED grid followed the form of the building's curtain wall," Yamamoto said. "Thus, the LED video strips were mounted against the building in several types of formations. In some instances, where there was glass, the LED video strips were placed inside the glass, facing outwards towards the public. Where there were opaque, metal panels on the building skin, the LED strips were recessed into reveals."

The tower's entire, front façade is covered with at least 60,000 sq. ft. of LED arrays. The 96-ft.-wide x 420-ft.-tall screen comprises approximately three-fourths of that space. The building crown and side walls will also feature LED lighting, which will draw attention to the front of building displays.

While LED lighting has become very "che-che" with architects, a few visionary building developers see the value of video walls as part of their buildings' design. Ideally, a perfect design would combine both lighting and video into a complete, visual motif.

Yamamoto observed that a building is normally defined by its exterior shape and, in some instances, the use of exterior lighting, which emphasizes that shape.

"Up to now, architecture has been about fitting buildings into 3-D space," Yamamoto said. "Videoscreens that completely cover a building's surface change the equation of how a building occupies that space. In a sense, a videoscreen covering a building surface places it in a fourth dimension, where pictorial and iconic imagery now become a representational feature of how the building presents itself."

Standard (Los Angeles), a company that develops architecturally integrated, multimedia installations, developed the tower's videoscreen and is designing its content. Adrian Velicescu, Standard's president, said, "This building isn't only the largest skyscraper in Jakarta," he noted, "but, upon completion [in 2007], its videoscreen will be the largest LED display in the world."

The screen is being manufactured by Odeco (Barcelona, Spain) and EuroSmartVision (Antony, France). TransMedia Wall, the Grand Indonesia Tower's video wall, has been developed in collaboration between Standard and EuroSmartVision.

Velicescu stated, "Very large videoscreens aren't just billboards. These screens also have a social responsibility to offer a 'civil function' beyond just advertising and branding messages. Kinetic art and socially relevant iconic graphics will also be shown on the building face. We believe that content should have some direct relationship to its surrounding community.

"We perceive about half the building's sign content will be revenue based, and the other half will be public-service announcements and art," Velicescu said. "All of this content will be designed with a natural visual pacing to make it compelling and more universally accepted by its viewing audiences."

oh=i think they just kidding lah...not to seriously answer that...
The LED that i was looked at BCA Tower till last night, just like g4brielle said=only color full lamp which always change color every second...eh coba jika malam tiba lihat wisma Dharmala samping Permata plaza at Sudirman street..dia juga pakai LED but berbentuk kotak di setiap jendela,selalu berubah warna setiap saat...
but jika LED BCA Tower nanti bisa tampilkan movie clip advertising product=wah sangat canggih juga sih...

the LED BCA tower is giant TV!, last night we saw dragon clip video for a couple minutes..its move the .. the picture its move..but still tested and not 100% fill side of BCA tower...

this LED TV will be the biggest at Asia perhaps...

but still not full 100% fill side of that BCA tower...they still tested some area..
if they want make bundaran HI as a times square HI..
so Deutsche Bank building at HI area can install with large LED too...

Aku udah coba liat WikiPed, buseeettt membingungkan banget versi mereka .... pake versi aku aja ya :D

LED = Light Emitting Diode, aku gak ngerti generalnya ....tapi proses kerjanya sih ngerti ..... Ohyaa,, LED adlaah bagian dari LED screen. Dan yang kalian maksudkan aku rasa LED screen :)

LED itu semacam Diode .... Diode ini fungsinya meneruskan/menyekat arus bergantung pada arah polarity dari diode tersebut.. kalau arah arusnya searah dengan arah Polarity Diode itu, maka Diode itu akan berfungsi, kalau gak searah dengan Polarity Diode tersebut maka Diode tersebut tidak akan berfungsi. Aplikasi berbeda untuk Arus DC dan Arus AC. Walau bagaimanapun, setiap diode punya batasan Voltase untuk bekerja. Jadi kalau voltage nya ketinggian (baca: melebihi konfigurasi diode tersebut), maka arus tetap akan bocor dan diode akan rusak , walaupun polaritynya berlainan.

Untuk kasus LED, diode yang berfungsi akan mengeluarkan cahaya. Nah Cahaya ini iluminasinya gak sama antara satu LED dengan yang lain. :) ... Nah sekarang ini Diode kan udah makin canggih dan ukurannya semakin kecil ,,, jadi kumpulan2 LED warna-warni macem-macem bisa digabungkan untuk mewakili setiap bagian dari ratusan (bahkan ribuan bagian) dari sebuah screen sederhana. Cara kerjanya pake gabungan2 IC (Integrated Circuit) biasanya sih terhubung ke satu panel (untuk ngatur voltage masukkan ke setiap Diode yang kecil2 itu) kemudian panel itu terhubung ke komputer dan biasanya bisa diprogram.

Kelemahan LED screen warnanya kurang kaya. Tapi, tingkat iluminasinya bisa diatur menjadi sangat tinggi atau sangat redup bergantung voltage inputnya :D ....

Beda sekali dengan LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), kalau LCD bukan Diode, tapi beberapa Layer yang tersusun, dan dengan pengaturan INPUT Voltage, bisa menghasilkan warna2 tertentu. Dan biasanya, tingkat iluminasinya gak selebar LED (yang bisa dari paling redup, ampe terang banget)...

LCD mengeluarkan warna tapi tidak memancarkan Cahaya yang terang.... ini bedanya .... LCD bisa terlihat terang atau redup karena ada BACKGROUND LIGHTnya .... pernah lihat, tulisan dari layar screen handphone tetap bisa kebaca walau background lightnya meredup :) ...

Contoh LED berukuran sangat2 kecil, yang kalaau disatukan bisa menjadi sebuah SCREEN,,, contoh .... SCORE BOARD yang ada di stadion, Screen yang biasa nya mengeluarkan gambar2 atau video2 di konser musik, scrolling-text newsticker biasanya di Bursa Saham ...

yes! i agree with omluki. tiimes squar elebih alive soalnya banyak orang jalan kaki dan streetnya very busy. tapi times square sdikit jorok daerahnya sedangkan BHI kan bersih :)

^^^Bundaran HI will look more grandiose than Timesquare: BCA Tower is twice as high.. Jalan Thamrin is three times as wide (with roundabout and nice fountain as bonus--in which Timesquare has none).

Unfortunately, the fountain and the HI roundabout are inaccesible to average pedestrian, especially those with strollers. Until Bunderan HI becomes a true gathering spot for Jakartans, then you can't really compare it with Times Square.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Bunderan HI is hardly a public place...well, maybe only during demonstrations..hehehe...

One day, I would like to see vehicles being banned from Bunderan HI totally...perhaps traffic can follow through tunnels underneath it.

i've seen the fountain and they're fantastic ! :banana: with all that music, dark room, the projection and BUBBLES spraying from the roof of the room :banana:
the mini bellagio fountain !!!
ada yang tau ga, jam maen nya, waktu itu gw ntn jem 5.05, apakah setiap satu jem ? kalo setiap satu jem, uda kelewatan 5 menit, nungguin ampe jem 6, sambil makan di food louver eh kelewatan . . .

Jadi inget dulu jam gedhe yg ada orkestranya di atrium Plaza Senayan waktu awal2 PS buka.

Itu udah kayak atraksi jagad aja... satu atrium penuh orang penasaran... setiap jam pula... hahaha

Kontras dengan sekarang.

lihatlah di atas patung ada jam dancing fountain tetapi terlalu cepat 5 minit dari jam tangan kita...eh=bukan hanya atraksi dancing fountain saja bisa kita lihat di entertainment distric, but kita juga bisa mendengarkan lagu2x electric techno at fashion distric, rencana akan ada special lighting seperti kita di discotik dipasang di atap sepanjang koridor lalu lighting mengikuti irama music electric techno tsb...ada lagi =gw diberitahu oleh management setempat mereka sudah buat theme park near market distric (tak bisa photo) mereka sudah install high speed roller coaster at upper level cross road...
sinting lah ide2x mereka...(photo2x lain segera menyusul besok krn cewek gw marah krn gw lebih tertarik SCC.com dibanding temani dia jalan he3x)...

i was hoping that the mall has a better pedestrian accessibility and integration, but instead they put a wall, a tall one, esp on the sudirman side. i know it's security reason, but i imo a building of this magnitude would be great if it complements the area around it, on street level.

^^ im not very sure but i think Berjaya Times Square....but nobody really like it xcept 4 malay teenagers.....duno y..... least fav to shop among klites i guz...

personaly i think da largest mall in kl shud be Midvalley and their new xpension Da Garden@Midvalley...not really xpension but another new mall next to Midvalley by da same developer.....sumting like PIM 1 and 2 i guz....

The current fav shud be The Pavilion....a high class but i think a smaller version of Grand Indonesia....n we had our 1st JCo cafe here......

the most popular mall in kl shud be suria KLCC, Midvalley,sungei wang plaza and 1Utama.....

the difnt between indo n malaysia mall is ours is smaller but very near to each other but yours really huge un4tunately a bit far from one to another.....a good example is jalan bukit bintang area in which u can find 10 shopping mall from one to another.....the pavilion, starhill,kl plaza,sg wang plaza,low yat plaza,imbi plaza,bukit bintang plaza,lot10 and berjaya times square..juz walking distance from a mall to another mall....and KLCC juz 10 minutes walk from Jalan Bukit Bintang...

sumtin like mangga 2 area i guz....

anyway the shopping malls in KL not much difnt in term of size or the shop itself with indonesia malls....

^^ @rizal is the Berjaya Time Square the biggest in SEA
and yeah Pavillion i'm looking foward to go there when i'm in KL nxt time
last time i went there it not opened yet :(
it is probably one of the best shopping mall in SEA i like after Siam Paragon :okay:!!

well actually Indo malls is relatively close to each other just that we are not "pedestrian friendly" enviroment :D Take for example Bundaran H.I
there are Grand Indonesia Mall, Plaza Indonesia (which across the street only) and Ex to the left of GI there's Jacc and also the Upcoming mall (Thamrin Residence)
and Senayan Area there's Plaza Senayan and opposite of it there's Senayan City
within walking distance or by car, there Pacific Place Mall and upcoming FX (aka Sudirman Place)

if u know what i mean ;)

yap..hotel indonesia yang masih belum terpasang kaca...lantai satu tepatnya...
but api cepat dikuasai...sempat buat macet bundaran HI...wah agak kaget jg waktu diberitahu oleh client d wisma nusantara...smoga tidak terjadi lagi...aku sekarang berada di Grand Indonesia but tidak terjadi penutupan..
mall tetap buka=dancing fountain n shops cafe,resto tetap berjalan normal, BCA tower tetap buka (celebrity fitness lt.11 tetap buka) apartment kempinski tetap nyala lampu...no problem...means..ini superbloc besar sekali(satu area terbakar but tidak menutup operational area lainnya)

right HOtel Indonesia was got burn but only 1-2 floors only... the progress will stop for 1 week for investigation...but its not disturb for all progress... i will update the pict.. and i was try sneak peak at market distric..its beyound of imagine...i was try to take lift BCA tower n stop at 11floors for see celebrty fitness,haiyaaa=my HP low bat has happend again
