So well, just came up with that idea :)

Do you like another country more than the one you're living in? If so, what is this country and what do you like more about it?

For me I am living in Canada and I really like it here. I never visited another country, but I think Australia really fit to me :P

I don't want to have a biaised opinion so I will just not answer :)

I lived some months in London and loved it; and I would love to have the chance to do the same in Amsterdam, Tokyo and Berlin (cities I've been in vacation, but tempted me to stay longer)

There are some countries I admire, and I think my country could have many things to learn from them.

But, well... I can't really say I like them more than my own. You are attached to your country by a number of ways that make it a part of you, regardless of its faults: the memories of your childhood, your loved ones, all the happy moments you spent there, etc.
I can't keep apart these two dimensions.

I'm from Holland. Besides fantastic Amsterdam I'm not that crazy about the place. I like Spain more. In general I love the life and attitude in Southern European countries from Italy to Spain to Portugal.

Jonesy55
February 19th, 2008, 01:53 PM
Hmm, as Federicroft says, it's difficult to get away from those things linking you to a place that cannot be replaced, family ties, memories etc

So even if objectively there may be countries that have better aspects than home (more money, more sunshine, less crime, better food) etc than home, I don't think that I could pick a place that I would say I definitely like more overall.

Of course there are many things my home country could do better and could learn from others and I would quite happily live in many other countries if the but home will always have that special place in the soul.

Furthermore: Greece, Italy (not the big cities though)

I'm from the UK, but would quite like to live in Spain.

I actually did move to Sevilla (Spain) for three months and found positives and negatives:

Positives:
- The weather - warm in winter!
- Cheap to eat out, many many places to eat
- Compact 'european' style city, as opposed to UK urban sprawl
- Transport system (in every city in Spain) a million times better than the UK
- Local pride and investment in local cities (as opposed to London-centric UK)
- High quality streets etc - clean, nice paving, nice public squares
- 'Family' feel to cities - kids out with parents, not much crime visible etc
- No scallies / chavs / townies (except for Madrid!)

Negatives:
- People not as polite and friendly as in the UK
- Choice of food in shops limited, crap supermarkets
- Choice of shops in general limited (Corte Ingles, Zara, Corte Ingles, Zara etc!)
- Expensive electronics, DVDs etc
- Slow pace of life
- Lack of 'youth' culture (in Seville at least)
- Slow / poor service in shops / bars etc
- The language (I can't speak it well) :)

Some people say that but I think it depends, Northern Europeans tend to be more distant to strangers I think but once you get to know them they are just as friendly in my experience, you get friendly and unfriendly people in all places.

I found that in Spanish shops etc other customers don't like to move out of your way if blocking aisles, and certainly don't like saying sorry if they barge into you!

I also found people walking past on the street were unwilling acknowledge your existence - as if they were afraid to make eye contact...

..Although better than in Berlin where everyone seems to just stare at you, shamelessly!

Still I don't think this makes them rude, is just that people behave in slightly different ways even in countries that are culturally similar in other ways.

I love China. Not the government or the environmental problems or the quality of life, but the food, the people, the culture, the history, the nature. The language. Both written and spoken.

If China was democratic and had a similar standard of living to the US, i might consider living there for a while, but i don't think any place could replace the US and i think i would eventually come back here.

I study english, so the US is my first option

My "plan B" is living in Canada or Australia. Actually I don't see myself living in Australia, I'm not used to Australian accent, it sounds very strange IMO

I also would like to live in the UK, but I don't think I can afford living in Europe.

I love Spain for live.... the party (except the negative for animals), the weather, the culture, the cities & the villages (hmmm... there are hundreds of precious historicals), the landscapes (Volcanoes, mountains, beaches, plains, grasslands), very modern & famous, the nightlife, the happy & fun people, the amazing history, etc, etc, etc.
An economy increasingly, today the GDP per capita is similar to the French & the GDP of Madrid exceeds the GDP per capita of USA (exemple). The low unemployment for example in my city....

But if I leave Spain I go to.... hmm.... France, Italy, Greece.... the north of Europe is good, but is more different.... the weather is... :S
Outside Europe? Really I don't know.... Australia, USA or Argentina.

I live in Argentina but I do not like my country.
This country has many climates and forms of relief but everything stays very far and does not have transparent sea and beaches of white sand and sea with palms that it is the type of landscape that I like especially. To Argentina her the people would change. for less ordinary, and more educated and civilized.
Less dirty.
I like Australia, the cleanliness, his not Latin culture, its landscapes, the education in the daily life.
Very good idea this thread. Regards

Well, I'm Brazilian but actually I live in the southern area of the country (Rio Grande do Sul state) and here is just too different from the classical stereotyped Brazilian image (tropical weather , jungle, etc...) . I love Rio Grande do Sul and wouldn't like to live in other places of the country, I mean Rio de Janeiro is a gorgeous city but at least for me I wanna go there just as a tourist for few days - I'm not a tropical beach person AT ALL . So, I really like colder countries - I LOVE Argentina (personally I relate more with Argentinean people than the average Brazilian people) and 'd love to live there for a while . Also love Canada, Norway,Finland,France...but I'm very grateful of everything I received from the Brazilian government and always will be no matter what . But really, I don't know if my last days will be here.

Definitly. I wouldn't change my country for anything, for me it's the most beautiful country in the world and I wouldn't love another one more than mine. We've got such a beautiful nature: beautiful beaches on Pacific coast from calmed ones to brave ones. Awesome forests in the coast, a little dessert in the coast; we've got such big mountains that get higher than 6000 mettres over sea level, beautiful highlands full of green, awesome volcanos and greater colonial cities; the amazon basin, where only 1 mettre of tropical forest has got more animal species than all US or Canada, awesome rivers; the beautiful Galapagos Islands, where the giant turtles live and we've got such incredible volcanic island-landscapes and a lot of fauna. If I'm suppossed to say which are the most developped countries and better to live in: Norway, Estonia, Japan or Switzerland.

ButI don't change my country, I love it: ECUADOR.

Blimey, did you have your eyes closed in Britain when you were there?! England is FAR from clean! You could have said almost any European country before Britain in the cleanliness stakes. Chewing gum on EVERY pavement without fail, litter everywhere thanks to the removal of bins and a generally bad national habit of dropping everything on the floor instead of finding a bin.

Sorry mate, I'm proud of my country, but it is quite dirty as a whole in the urban areas.

The weather is better, food seems to be healthier (I'm now in a better shape than I was in Germany), people are more relaxed, less rigid than in Germany (even here in Northern Italy), many beautyful women. And regarding the work discipline the differences between Northern Italy and Germany seem to be thin.

I wouldn't mind living 2 years or so in New York, Seattle or Los Angeles.

Lived on the first two. Seattle is a nice place to start a family but be prepared for the rainy weather. Major thunderstorms hit the city frequently.
A big plus is its diverse population, a large mixture of latinos and asians (especially philipinos). It's close to Vancouver, the heaquarters of Starbucks and a delightful Pike Place Market where the city's fresh salmon is sold.

NY is obviously a very cool city to live in, plenty of entertainment and things you can do there but it's very expensive so you must have plenty of dough to move there. I wouldn't choose to live for the long term, it's not the best place to start a family.

LA, it's America's most polluted major city. Very spread out, it gets really hot in the summer months. It has some nice suburbs which are very pricy to settle in, Hollywood namely the one that comes to mind.
I wouldn't choose to live in LA. Maybe to visit on a weekend but that's about it.

the only reason im still in ireland is dublin. its loud, liberal and sexy; much like myself but yeah i think the amsterdam is truly for me. oh i have a question for any dutch people who might read this. just how much day to day life can i get through using english?
You'd probably have few problems surviving every day life, as most Dutch (especially the younger generations) speak English well enough to be help/useful. Just don't don't expect good pronunciation: it can be as abrasive as fingers nails scratching a black board ;)

Anyways, I love living in the Netherlands, but there's a couple of things that really piss me off: the Dutch tend to complain a lot and are very spoilt (as in always seeing the negative in things, rather than realising how fortunate they are to live here), Dutch society becomes increasingly selfish, intolerant and xenophobic, and the government is an ineffective bunch of money-grabbing, spineless narcissists that are too afraid to tackle any major issue because it could cost them votes. Added to that, despite global warming's best efforts, the climate here has a tendency to suck ass. All things I can do without...
I wouldn't mind living in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Hong Kong or Barcelona (probably many more places all over the world, but the ones mentioned I've experienced first hand).

But wages are not that good compared to Germany.

True, but it also depends on your qualification. Actually the wages between Northern Italy and Northern Germany are more or less equal (but Northern Italy offers more job opportunities as it is the nation's Powerhouse). After all, as long as I can come along with my wage, I prefer Italy. Money is not everything.

Do you like another country more than your?

Sure, why wouldn't I?

Being born in a country, and having lived there for all your life, shouldn't be a very heavy weighing argument really. Feeling attached and tied to you country is another matter. Therefore, I don't think "would you want to live in another country than your current one?" is the same question at all (as some here seems to think).

Whether I like a country or not is based on may things: culture, language, architecture, sport traditions, political tradition, military history, attitudes (in general and also on specific issues), values, etc.

There are many countries I like more than my native country, but that doesn't mean I don't like Norway.

I meet many Aussies and they love Canada. As it goes for me, I grew up in Bosnia, former Yugoslavia in those days. Toronto looked as the best city on tv show before I moved here. Now , it is nothing special in my opinion. It full of nice tolerant Canadians, and as well very diverse nations that hate eachother. I am not quite sure why is Canada so attractive to many of you. I must admit that I get nice feeling after spending my vacation time and returning to Toronto. There are not many world class cities that have close homeland feeling as Toronto. The country where I would love to try would be Slovenia. The nature and location do enough for me to like Slovenia. I don't think I would like the US. If I had to choose Canada or Australia, I would go to Canada. Many aussies tell me that Australia is just too distant from anything.

I would have to say Australia. I think its distance allows it to escape all the crap from other countries, i.e illegal people traffic on boats and so on. These days with planes Australia is reachable and the amount of Canadians moving to Australia is phenomenol, they say the unemployment rate is huge compared to 4.5% in Australia and that the weather and food prouduce isnt good at all. I had a friend just come back from Montreal and compared to let say Melbourne, well there isnt a comparison, I would say that Montreal must be nice but living wise, Australia beats Canada. I was born in Geneva, nice and all wouldnt trade it for Australia.

Northern Italy is the best place to live on earth ( If you are mexican ) from Milano, Torino or Venezia you can visit central and easter Europe ( that is so close ) or go down to the souther provinces and sail to all mediterranean cities including Grece and Egypt, all the places a yung mexican dream, for these reazons I love Italy but I do prefer Mexico and its culture !!!

I live in the US and definitely have envy for other countries. America is a wonderful place to live but needs to catch up to European, Canadian and Australian living standards. America is no place to live without a car or medical insurance. Religon intertwines with politics a little too much. Some laws are stupid here too. Also, there are parts of the central US that are so insulated (like Kansas) from the rest of the word that they are not accepting of alternative lifestyles and naive that some people are aetheists. Also, its no fun that the rest of the world hates us for our president. It's not exactly fair but that is the way it goes.

I think Spain, France and Italy are as perfect as it gets despite the language barrier. I love the Netherlands for its laws.
The Mediterranean is just unreal.

How can you say that you would not like the US if you haven't been here. Do you really think Canada and Australia are that different from us?

Aussies love Canada but not the US. Wow we are being ostracized by our fellow English speaking countries. Ouch!

I Love Australia. I like Germany, i love the language and can speak it good and love their cites but i hate there weather. I also like Canada with such good cities except i would prefer to live in the US like Seattle and Philadelphia's seems really nice. The Uk was nice at a stage but with prices going up and up it seems like a dark clouds is about to hit the UK.

Aussies dont hate the US they just hate their government much like every other country, I met so many Yanks who were pretending to be Australian so that they wouldnt have problems and I was like why dont you pretend to be Canadian and it was like an insult, I guess it is like calling an Australian a New Zealand. I think Australia is different to the USA and Canada, having been to both. Australia is much better from many point of view, including unemployment, their dollar almost matches the strength of the US dollar, health system, education, lifestyle and produce. I was amazed to see how bad the produce is in Canada, the bread wasnt good, the meat not as good as Australian, but the Canadians dont pay for water from where I was renting which I thought was nice. Its also too cold in Canada, would go for holiday but not live there at all.

I love Spain. I dont think there's a better country on the planet in terms of diversity in landscape, local cultures, urbanity, architecture etc. And oh yeah, the weather isn't too shabby either!

After that, I wouldn't mind living in the UK either. Expensive houses be damned. I'll live in a straw hut if I can live in London. Just in terms of language, England is a country that has always felt closely connected to me. Specifically, London also seems to have this "Capital of the World" vibe and even though I don't think its as diverse as Toronto, it just seems to be the most significant home away from home for most countries.

And for some reason, cities that are usually ranked highly in livability rankings like Vancouver, Melbourne, Vienna, Copenhagen, Oslo etc just don't appeal as much to me. I'm sure those are all great cities but cities like London and NYC, even with their numerous problems, just have this timeless attractive force that resonates no matter where they are ranked in such rankings.

I was born in America, but I positively love living in South Africa. I know people get negative points-of-view from Johannesburg ex-pats from here. But, living near Cape Town on a wine estate is unbeatable. Love the Mediterranean climate, the gorgeous scenery, the great food, wine, history and friendly people.

Places I could live in other than here:
California (USA), British Columbia (Canada), Victoria or New South Wales (Australia)... other than those places, wouldn't go anywhere else. Love Europe, but I think I'd get a bit claustrophobic.

IF i could live anywhere, I would give up US in a heartbeat. So tired of how this country is run. Since I was born in Japan, I wouldn't mind living back in Tokyo also I've visited Australia and loved so I wouldn't mind living in Sydney or Vancouver.

Why so much American bashing...by americans!????? (of course this is from a liberal from SAN FRANSICO) Anyway, its called a democracy...use your voting privledge to make change, instead of complaining and talking about wanting to move away. Now, I am not a blind American supporter, I've lived in Japan and absolutley loved it. There people are among the nicest people i've ever encountered, urban life can't be matched, and quality of life is high. But to say America is soooo bad because of somethings people in Washington are doing, is absurb.

I think America is something most people find difficult to grasp. It is a vast nation with a vast array of differing lifestyles, mentalities and cities. I for one completely dislike the sunbelt states. Most cities are soulless (bar Savannah, New Orleans & Charleston), too humid and hot, cities are sprawling and lack culture or history. Then again, love New York, love California, like the west in general (a definite "mountain" person), Seattle's just uber cool! Many of these cities have great history, the people are well-cultured and progressive and the cities vibrant and pedestrian/public transport friendly (like San Fran or NYC).

America's so diverse. Some areas and people I cannot stand, other areas and other people are really awesome! :)

All just comes down to your taste and being well-traveled enough to formulate an opinion.

Last point is the Canadian flag...simple but to the point and extremley distinctive.

I've been to the United Kingdom (Scotland & England), Italy, and Nigeria and will see Jamaica for the first time next week. With that said I still think the United States is the BEST place to live. I would like to spend a few months in Italy and the U.K. but there's no place like home. If someone told me to pick a country and I could never leave for the rest of my life I'd pick the United States. From the northern tundra (Alaska) to the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands), Pacific territories and Hawaii and the main 48 states the United States has so much to offer. I love it.

I love no other country more than England, but I can't wait to move away from here. Living in England would be good if you had the money to live in a village away from the cities. Alot of family and friends have even told me they don't blame me for wanting to move to another country. But I absolutely despise living in Beeston, not only is it rife with home grown terrorists(Yes most of the London bombers came from Beeston) but muggings and other other violent crime and just getting more common, the police don't really care about such 'insignificant' crimes like muggings and other violence unless it results in murder of course.

I'd probably choose a English speaking country like Canada and the US(New England area or something) as I was pretty impressed when i've visited the two. One thing I would miss is the football which i'd have to take regular visits back to Leeds for.

I dunno really. I think I'm going to stay in Germany, although I more than once thought about going to California. The good thing about Germany is that it is really central, surrounded by 9 other countries. You can go easily and cheaply by plane to basically every other Eurocity (within hours). Germany has many nice and diverse cities (Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich) and a nice countryside as well (e.g. The Alps, North and Baltic Sea, it is green). And the people seem cooler than there image is...

Miami: big and beautiful city, you feel like home because there are people from everywhere in the world; nice places to go shopping; great boys for going party; in general is the best city I've been.

Canada: never been to, but what I've seen in internet and TV is very cool and I guess I could fit well in a big city of the english Canada.

Tel Aviv: my boy Zohar made me love this place that I would like to visit soon; looks awesome for gay people and the culture there is just unique, also is close to Europe so I will be able to visit so many great places near home.
