Vive le QV!

I hope the "block" theme of the Residential & Retail building (1st rendering) actually comes to light... superb!

Holy Shiza !!

Coolness isn't the word for how good QV looks like being..

We are *soo* lucky to have this an MC going up side by side .. as I said in the MC thread ... Melbourne Architecture ROCKS !!

Cul.. to answer your questions about the chimney .. v.tough angle to judge but looks like the BHP part of the site to me ..

How many floors do the 3 towers have? are they taller than the BHP B HQ?

I went today and it looks pretty cool, the big W and safeway stores are an very standard but the centre is very industrial looking, polished concrete floors, exposed steel beams etc. It has a shopping centre feel but with no doors or windows it just spills out into the laneways which are paved with the traditional melb bluestone pavers very schmick. And it looks like it wont be long till other parts start opening because a lot of stores have started their fit outs. as for the piazza you cant really get a good view of it yet.

melb central definitely have a bit of work to do

Went in to Safeways this evening.....it's huge.....bigger than my local at Toorak! It's open until 2359, 7 days a week. Couldn't really make out anything else, to much construction going on, but it looks like it's going at breakneck speed!

Went to check it out yesterday. It's all good.
Big size Safeway and Huge W which is a drawcard for shoppers and tenants. Good vibe to the place. but it's still under construction big time amd access was very limited.
Food court etc should be opening soon many stalls looked completed.

I f**ken like it.

The deep / conservative colours are a welcome change!

No Brainer shot, highlighting the fact that the bare-arse concrete crapness of BHP's backside will cease to exist in the vista from RMIT in the not too distant future (bwahah ;))

The, quote tayser "the bare-arse concrete crapness" of BHP-B. has taken the industrial meets high-tech theme just that one step too far. Juz looks cheap and unfinished (which it is) - always will as such no matter how much they try to block it with QV Resi..

A lot of residents will inevitibly be able to get a fair whack of it to view as well.

Hey guys,

I was at work the day it opened so I decided to go have a look of course :D From what I saw, which wasn't too much at all, the place was very different from any shopping/retail/office complex under construction today. Even though it was barely open I could see where they are trying to go with it, still unsure if it will actually work though. The foodcourt is very strange - all the shops leading off it are encased in the steal mesh byfolds, very close together and with extremely narrow walkways. It reminds me of a small laneway market place (which I guess was what they were going for), a stark contrast to the latest open plan airy feel that shopping complexes go for today, ESPECIALLY in the food court area.

Very different indeed, need the majority of shops to open before I can make a proper judgement. Maybe it's just me, but the open plan thing has always presented a comfortable safe easy shopping experience. It might just take us a little while to get our heads around this cramped tightly packed space created at QV.

That's my assessment s far anyways.

Well, the aim is to create laneways like the rest of the CBD not shopping mall food courts like those in Knox, Chadstone, Southland, Eastladn, Northland and Highpoint. The CBD is not a shopping mall but an area full of streets and lanes that lead to shops, cafes, bars, clubs and sometimes nothing! But that is what makes the CBD a hell of a lot better then the large suburban shopping centres, it has life!

Does anybody know if BHP made the full shift before the $20 million penalty deadline came into play?

Yes, a week or so ago, there was a report that most had moved, but the execs were still at Level 50 - 600 Bourke Street, and moving in soon.

Well its still very early days - the construction in the public areas is still far from complete - and there's dozens of workers still moving around in there with the public.

I agree - I don't think I'm gonna bother going until it's mostly all complete... I still can't believe they've opened it so soon with the buildings still barely half completed!

It seems that Grollos may be a bit tight for cash to be rushing these tenants to open in what is basically still a building site.
