mr.x February 18th, 2008, 05:01 AM Anti-Olympic protesters stage rally in downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Anti-Poverty Committee staged a short, but intense rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery today.
The Olympic clock has once again become the target of the APC.
As families played near the fountain in front of the Art Gallery, a couple dozen protestors quickly arrived and went straight for the clock.
Bright yellow paint was smeared down the front of the clock and a poster was plastered over the number of days left until the Games.
One protester says the Olympics are destroying environment and wreaking havoc on the neighbourhood.
He says they can't stop the Games but they can disrupt them, and possibly deter other cities from taking them on.
Many say their loud and in-your-face approach is the best way of getting their message across.
Police kept an eye on the area, but the protestors didn't stick around long after.
Daguy February 18th, 2008, 12:37 PM It never ceases to annoy me that they somehow think vandalizing property is going to help anything.
D J M K February 18th, 2008, 06:42 PM too funny. i'm sure these fools are the reason why our security budget is not enough.
however, i would not be a bit surprised if the cops are collecting evidence and just issue the warrants days before the olympics where they will be kept nice and safe away from the festivities.
spyro February 18th, 2008, 08:42 PM i thought we had 24 hour patrol on that thing
DrT February 18th, 2008, 09:17 PM They have camera surveilance there.
Can't they find these delinquents and put them in jail?
Overground February 18th, 2008, 10:22 PM If you want to see something really disturbing, check out their website. I'm all for free speech but these folks are not doing themselves much good at the way the present their views.

According to the news, charges are pending...probably for the female that shot two yellow paint balls at the clock. They know who she is.

I'm sure the police, IOC, and VANOC know everyone in the APC now.

Nah that's too easy on them. I prefer to use these kinds of people for testing medicine. See? Problem solved, executions is just wasintg a useful human life (not saying the person is useful) - instead we can put them up for better use, such as testing medicine. AND WE WON'T BE HARMING THE POOR ANIMALS ANYMORE.
Heeheehee...
Yellow Fever February 19th, 2008, 10:03 AM They are bunch of lazy ass should be sent to the labor camp in China to learn to work. I bet they never have a real job in their whole f...... life.
canucker16 February 19th, 2008, 12:15 PM i'm really confused as to what the anti-poverty committee stands for. i can understand someone being opposed to the olympics because they feel those funds could be used for social programs instead, but now that we already have the olympics the money is being spent anyways and they're just causing MORE funds to be thrown towards the olympics in the way of security. as for discouraging other cities to take on the olympics that's ridiculous. it'll just get other places to have harsher punishments for those who vandalize or disrupt olympic related proceedings.
there is no excuse to be poor unless you suffer certain mental or physical handicaps (which i suspect some of these APC protestors suffer from, they seem pretty retarded to me.)
Ravman February 19th, 2008, 08:49 PM isnt there a way we can ship them somewhere? i dunno serbia? lol a canadian version of the gulag is needed for the apc.... i do agree, to a degree, with what they are saying, but they can use other means like more civilized methods of getting their message heard.

Exactly, I wouldn't mind them protesting if it was not violent or destructive. And actually, peaceful protests get their message through better - violent riots: media usually only focuses on the incident and not the message themselves.
But then their message is a little screwed up too - such as blaming the olympics for Vancouver development, as seen here:

mr.x February 20th, 2008, 06:28 AM No arrests yet for vandalism of Olympic Countdown Clock

Vancouver police have yet to make an arrest following the paintballing of the Olympic Countdown Clock in Vancouver.
Two paintballs hit the clock when about 75 protesters from the Anti-Poverty Committee gathered Sunday in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Two posters were also stuck on the clock.
Police questioned members of the media following the fracas, asking them to identify who hurled the yellow paint.
"We will be following it up," police spokesman Const. Tim Fanning said yesterday.
"As soon as we have more on it, we will let you know."
An Olympics spokeswoman said no plans are being made to step up security for the clock. A security guard was posted after an earlier attack.

zivan56 February 20th, 2008, 08:59 AM The police are useless. I have my car broken into at regular intervals, and it's been increasing over the last few years...according to them break ins been decreasing! And 30% in my region!
I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled some statistic out of their ass and claimed that the clock has been attacked less frequently and therefore they are doing their part...
Yellow Fever February 21st, 2008, 05:13 AM ^^^ I work in Metrotown and my car used to get broken into all the time until I had enough, which was when I put a big sign which read " DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, THERE IS NO MONEY AND NO VALUABLES IN THIS CAR!". Since then I have no trouble. No kidding.
