Mindanao more resilient to current global financial crisis - official

Pagadian City (3 July) -- Despite the current global financial crisis Mindanao continues to register increase in exports revenues.

This was revealed by Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana Sr., Chair of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) and Deputy Development Champion for the Super Region during the recently concluded 12th Mindanao Super Region Inter-Agency meeting held at Hotel Alindahaw this city.

He said, in 2008 the Philippines registered a US$10.159-B revenues in exports as compared to US$13.107-B in 2007 with a growth rate of 22.49 percent. Of this amount, Mindanao contributed a US$854-M in 2008 and US$704-M in 2007 with a growth rate of 21.32 percent.

Volume of produced agricultural commodities in Mindanao that contributed much to the economy based on the statistics from the National Statistics Office (NSO) shows that palay is the leading agricultural product with 3,835,275 metric ton in 2008 as to 3,741,141 metric ton in 2007 with an increase of 2.52 percent production, Leyretana said.

Corn production follows with 3,669,073-MT in 2008 and 3,766,915-MT in 2007 with a negative growth rate of 2.60 percent. Fish ranks third with 6.57% growth rate at 2,154.858-MT last year while in 2007 it registered at 2,021,956 metric ton. Other products such as livestock, poultry products and banana are also in the top list contributors, the MEDCo noted.

Leyretana said, food exports also posted a positive growth rates despite the global crisis, which registered at 956,114,443 kilogram last year compared to 781,924,572 kg in 2007 with 22.28 percent growth rate increase, Leyretana added.

Romeo Lustestica, representatives from DOTC, NIA, DOE, PPA, DOH and LGU's in Mindanao and other member agencies were also present during the one-day meeting. (PIA9/Calanipa)

qwert, i think Pagadian could have done better in the construction of this Terminal...medyo dili kaau ko bilib ini nga bus terminal...unless Pagadian has bigger plans than this in the future...just like CDO d ba...they improved their bus terminal...actually, last december pa sab ko nakaanha when i went home for a visit amo gihatud ako younger bro.:)

inumpisahan kasi ng Gaisano yung blue-yellow combination sa facade nila... medyo OK naman yung combination so other BD's imitate those... actually the first design of PCMC has deep colors, its a combination of dark brown and light brown... ewan ko bakit bigla nag change... siguro para mag match sa BD1..:cheers:

this IBT project was done 1990's pa during the time of Mayor Arao... pero matagal siya na open to the public (that was 2001). medyo alanganin man gud ang area dinha kay dili flat... but the city has a plan to expand, pero kamulo pa sila ug flatten sa mga hilly areas...

may it be a destabilization attack, a terrorist attack, or admin's another political strategy.... why in mindanao. it gives a negative impression in the whole island... living in mindanao for most of my life i know it's not that alarming. though we have to be vigilant bout it din; but parang sad to hear in news na they bomb mindanao and Metro Manila gets overly alarmed agad by it...

^^yup..coz..malaki din naman yung income ng mga drivers kung more than 5 passengers yung isasakay nila..
but i can still remember during my high skul years..natatakot kaming dumaan sa city proper pag overloading of passengers yung tricy namin kasi dadakpin kami..so i think my idea na rin yung mga Tricy drivers and motorcycle owners about it b4..

POPCOM-IX launches LPPEd in Congress and 4th ZPOWERS day

Pagadian City (10 July) -- Fight poverty. Educate girls. Respond to the economic crisis and invest in women as a smart choice, is today’s call of the Population Commission (POPCOM) in celebration of World Population Day.

Highlighting the celebration is the launching of the Learning Package on Parent Education on Adolescent Health and Development (LPPEd), a module for a program developed to equip parents with the necessary knowledge on adolescent sexual and reproductive health concerns as well as skills on how to communicate these concerns with their children.

Mayor Ace William Cerilles of Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur expressed his gratitude to OIC Director Susan Tejada of POPCOM-IX for choosing his municipality where LPPEd activities will be piloted this year. Zamboanga del Sur Gov. Aurora E. Cerilles, Pagadian Mayor Samuel Co and a representative of Commissioner-at-Large Christopher Laurence S. Arnuco of the office of the National Youth Commission signed the declaration of support to the LPPEd after unveiling the learning packages in four (4) modules.

Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao, Asec Crisanto B. de la Cruz commended the Zamboanga Peninsula Population Officers and Workers, Inc. (ZPOWERS, Inc.) for their laudable undertaking while Gov. Cerilles expressed her full support in managing the population growth. She mentioned the P4.04M the provincial government earmarked for the Response for Parenting Movement (RPM) through a memorandum of agreement she signed with POPCOM.

In line with this year’s celebration of World Population Day, the Commission on Population (POPCOM) in cooperation with ZPOWERS, Inc. held a three-day Annual regional Population Congress and the 4th ZPOWERS, Inc. general assembly which ends today. MESSY CITY WIRE CONNECTIONS HIT TOPSY-TURVY WIRE connections of telephone and cable lines, including the high voltage wires of ZAMSURECO-I have caught the attention of some local legislators who were prompted to pass a resolution requesting the concerned telecommunications companies to keep their lines that crisscross the city’s sky line not to look messy.

The said resolution was approved in the last SP session and in a few weeks time these lines will hopefully be fixed so that they will cease to be a public eye sore.

City Councilor Arnold “Glavys” Gavenia, who authored the resolution said “he has called up the attention of the line owners like Kismet and PCTV cable company, CRUZTELCO, BAYAN TEL and ZAMSURECO-I before filing the resolution.

“I think it is easy for the City Mayor’s Office to implement the approved resolution kay duna may mga meeting na nga gipahigayun”, Gavenia told reporters.

THE PRESIDENT’S VISIT in the town of San Pablo, Zamboanga del Sur seems not to have worked for the immediate implementation of the long over-due Guipos-San Pablo road concreting, since up to now no date has been fixed to officially start the project.

This was gathered a week ago during the 12th Mindanao Super Region Inter-Agency Meeting held at Hotel Alindahaw, when Congressman Antonio Cerilles said to Media that they are still looking for funds to finance the multi-million provincial road project.

Cerilles added the plans have long been in placed and the President has already given the assurance to pursue the project to unburden the local folks who have long suffered when negotiating this rugged road.

“Local folks in San Pablo should remain hopeful, that someday they can enjoy a fully concreted road, but would still have to wait for some period of time since there is no fix date yet when the project will officially start”, Cerilles stressed.

He added that the provincial officials are doing their share by exerting all efforts to provide the constituency of San Pablo with a good road network.

Even Governor Auring Cerilles has given her share to help the local folks of San Pablo by inviting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to their town and even rode with the President on a vehicle which traveled the rugged road, the veteran solon said
