CO’S NEW FACES TO CITY COUNCIL ("http://pagadian.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=289:cos-new-faces-to-city-council&catid=34:demo-category)

IN THE POTPOURRI of old timers, veteran lawyers and successful entrepreneurs completing the local slate of Mayor Sammy Co, four new faces did not escape the eye of the media.Who are they? Will they hog the headlines and squeeze for voters’ preference in the next

year’s elections just like the old timers and the veterans? First is Alexander “Jun-Jun” Co, Jr. The 23 year-old is an hotelier and Mayor Co’s nephew. He is said to be a “substitute” for his uncle, incumbent councilor Wilson Co, who opted not to run again owing to health concerns.

A business administration and computer application graduate of La Salle University in Cebu City, Jun admits he’s a greenhorn in politics and was hesitant at first.

“My uncle taught me the importance of coming out of my comfort zone and start serving other people. It was an insight and from that time I thought I am capable of becoming a humble servant,” he added.
“In life we had to be determined. Achieving things does not depend on age but on determination.”
“Business wisdom is my forte that I can apply in the political arena in the interest of public service and maximized potential and develop to gain more business investors in the city,” Co said.

Jun notes that he can make breakthroughs in the tourism, business and youth sectors.
Next in Co’s list is Aniceto Galon, a retired judge and former city councilor who wants to make a comeback from his long respite.

He says he has reached the highest point of his career and wants “to go back to his first love,” which he means the city council.

As a young lawyer then, Galon has served for two terms in the pre-martial law years before he shifted career and worked his way up in the judicial courts.

“Kung magustuhan sa katawhan akong tanyag kanila, ang akong gisaligan sa akong pagpapili ug ang igarantinya ang akong tiunay nga pagserbisyo,” Galon added.

For lawyer Carlos “Caloy” Madarang III, taking his sights on public service will be a specialty since as a lawyer, for example, he can offer his services to the council and to the people.

“Being a rookie in the political arena I don’t want to brag myself. The task and work of a councilor will not be new to me. So far I’m still hopeful and continue to pray for the blessing of the Almighty and the people so that this bid will be successful,” the former provincial assistant legal officer said.

Last but not the least is businessman and contractor Roque “Nonoy” Yamba, who is also the president of the Baganian Broadcasting Corporation and general manager of DxBZ-AM and DxCA-FM.

On the sideline is incumbent board member Baldomero “Baleleng” Fernandez—a private lawyer and formerly the provincial and city prosecutor of Zamboanga del Sur and Pagadian, respectively.
Banking on his vast experience in law practice and as a seasoned legislator, Fernandez said that he will focus on the needed regulations and policies for a more progressive regional center.
“Nagtan-aw ko nga taga-dinhi man gyod ta ug basin aduna tay dako nga mahimo ug ikatampo sa pagpanday sa balaod alang sa kalambuan sa siyudad,” he stressed.

Fernandez added that he wants to initiate laws that will benefit the senior citizens, revenue collections and the poor.For his part, Co said that their lineup went through the rigorous selection process of their party and that he believes this chosen crop will help propel the city to make more progress.

The mayor calls them a “teamwork of young, energetic and committed people” that can lend a hand in propelling the city to sure development.

“With this lineup, we will try our very best nga modaug gyod ang tanan,” the mayor added.

kini nga bus..actually...ang side design pareho sa Kinglong ug New Hino buses but different front fascia...mas "alienic" ni ug design...

mura ra man ni cya ug beefed up nga old Hino aircon buses but with new face and body design!..IMO:)

by the way ang route ani nga bus is PAG-DPG-ZAM...

Yap mao ni ilang mga bag-o nga hino. New gyud ni xya og dili refurbished according to RTMI driver that I talked with before.

school na xa..Aurelio Mendoza memorial college...murag barko...wala ko nagkuha sa hotels kay layo...na miy mga 6 ata...Sibugay grand plaza, mandarin, etc...and we have 12 banks...:>...schools, we have MSU, WMSU, UZ-ipil, Marian College, AMMC, STII, ZSMIT...hospitals, we have 4...ipil doctors, Simon, de Villa, & prov hosptls..

I don't think mall is one of the requirements. Ang Iligan nahimong city 59 years ago maski walay mall. 2008 pa gani siya nagka-mall og isa ra pa jud kabuok.

Ang Molave (my place of birth) kay kanunay ra na gidungog nga himuong city, bata pa ko anang istoryaha. Ambot kanus-a pa.

Ang mga Viking Hino bus sa RTMI maoy kusog modagan nila ga bus sa tanan nilang mga fleets. Pila kabuok ang Viking buses diha sa Pagadian? Ang King Long hinay na modagan kay ang makina ana parehas ra sa Rural Coaster.

Really? Depende man siguro na sa panahon or oras kay nakasakay kog King Long sa Super 5 padulong CdeO one time, paspas man kaayo siya mudagan.

Pero as in tinuod jud nang parehas ra og engine ang King Long og coaster? Pila diay ka cylinders og horsepower ang engines sa King Long og coaster?

Ang Molave (my place of birth) kay kanunay ra na gidungog nga himuong city, bata pa ko anang istoryaha. Ambot kanus-a pa.

Section 450 of the Local Govt Code mandates that a cluster of barangays or a municipality can be converted into a city if it has a minimum income of P20 million and any of the following: a population of at least 150,000 or a contiguous territory of 100 square kilometers. The minimum income requirement was raised to P100 million because of the passage of Republic Act 9009.

there are really beautiful pristine beaches that lined the coast from SDN to Cotabato province.. incredibly more beautiful than any other beaches in mindanao and perhaps in the entire country. the only problem why it cant be developed because of the now you see it now you dont, peculiar inhabitants that rouges the area...even the locals at nearby towns wont try to visit the place for swimming because theyre a bit scared. bisan sa baguio beach lang gani nga duol pa sa tukuran makuyawan na ko kung naa mi kasabay mga maligo nga ang mga inistoryahan inintsik:lol::ohno:

Okay na ang IBT sa ipil karon..was there yesterday..VERY far from the town proper, murag IBT sa pagadian kalayo sa city proper mas rural lang ang sa ipil...Two wings, murag letter 'V' ang shape, left for the buses, right wing for the vans...medyo mingaw pag.adto nako kay gabii na ko nilarga, january 1, gamay ra tao...

i have found a blog created by a foreigner (im not sure of his nationality) who used to travel Pagadian, i was amazed by this as he found our city unique. he also called our city as a "nice college town". I find him very nice that he even recommends everyone to visit Pagadian.

After reading this, I feel more proud of our city....

VG Ariosa Leads Local LP’s In 2010 Elections

THE RANKS OF THE Liberal Party (LP) of Zamboanga del Sur may be few but surely it is composed of reform-oriented local officials and candidates led by incumbent Vice Governor Roseller “Roy” Ariosa.
Ariosa, former ally of Gov. Aurora Cerilles in Lakas-Kampi,
who is running against the governor’s husband, 2nd District Congressman Tony Cerilles, for the governorship, said. Ariosa ties up with another of Cerilles’ former protégé, Lakewood mayor Domingo “Doming” Mirrar, the local LP’s vice gubernatorial bet.

“We are ready to face and present to the people our platform together with our line-up,” Ariosa told this paper over the weekend.

He said the LP’s platform is to have a “change in the system through the implementation of new programs and good services to the people without any political color.”

Running for congressman in the first district is another LP stalwart, lawyer Romeo “Boyet” Vera Cruz, vice chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), who will square off with incumbent Congressman Victor Yu.
Broadcaster Dinah Marasigan, Cesar “Diolo” Dacal, Mario Fermindoza, Hope Florendo of Labangan and former NBI agent and lawyer Eric Glenn Peralta compose the LP’s lineup for the first district provincial board.

Lawyer Tersindo “Dodong” Poloyapoy is running against Governor Aurora E. Cerilles for congressman in the second district while Attys. Emiliano Deliverio and Andres “Andy” Nacilla, Dr. Lucas Leonardo Jr. of Guipos, former Tabina mayor Romulo Vic Lomo and former Bayog mayor Emercindo Fullo as guest candidate compose the LP’s provincial board members in the second district.

“We did not put-up a candidate for mayor in Pagadian City although we are fielding lawyer Tata Quicoy and mediaman Anacleto “Boy” Deliverio as bets for the city council because we believe in the leadership of Mayor Sammy Co and his programs for development of the city,” Ariosa justified.
However, Ariosa said that in the municipal level for the first district, the LP has filled up candidates from Mayor down to the municipal councilors except in Ramon Magsaysay.

He also said that in the second district, they only filled up five towns with complete line-up: San Pablo, Dinas, Tigbao, Tabina and Lakewood while in Dumalinao, the LP fielded only a candidate for vice mayor along with candidates for the Sangguniang Bayan but the rest of the municipalities have guest candidates.

“I hope that the people will vote wisely and choose the right person whom they believe can give real public service. With the election automation, I believe that cheaters will have no chances to do their schemes,” Ariosa said.

2nd: The completion of Zamboanga del Sur Medical Clinic. 3rd: The rennovation of our Provincial Capitol. 4th: Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Complex in Dao (correct me if I'm wrong), 5th: Lake Maragang Watershed development project in Tigbao commenced as former DENR secretary Tony Cerilles was appointed.
6th: The conversion of JH cerilles polytechnic college into a state univeristy.

He strongly lobbied for the Tubod-Lakewood Road, because in doing so, their resort in Biswangan will directrly benefit. They are instrumental for a creation of a State College, but look at how these institutions became instruments in immortalizing their names. Look at how the Cassava Project fatted the pockets of the Cerilles, because the use Provincial Government's funds in order to purchase the raw materials to be planted in the lands owned by them.

FYI: J.H. Cerilles is just a state college, and not a state university.

I'm not absolutely saying that the Cerilleses achieved nothing, pero the question as what I always emphasized, MAO RA NA?!

And by the way, this is not an issue of whether Cerilles is better than their predecessor, but rather its a question of whether Cerilles is still worthy to stay in power or we will try a brand new style of leadership and administration.

FINALLY AND IRREVOCABLY, the Pagadian City Airport in Muricay will be opened for air traffic this month of January 2010, Mayor Samuel Co proudly disclosed. Speaking over the radio last Wednesday during his weekly program, Co said he was in high spirits after receiving favorable responses from various air transportation companies which he invited to open flights here.

Co explained that the recent completion of the asphalt overlay and the concrete runway widening with shoulder grade and apron repair has paved the way for the opening of the local airport to traffic as of last Dec. 20, 2009.

The mayor said that the travelling public have to wait for the official announcement of the flight schedules from the three airline companies—Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines and Cebu Pacific which gave their assurance to fill the Pagadian-Cebu route by February.

Co said he has finally ascertained the airport’s opening after he received the “Notice to Airmen” (NOTAM), a transmitted dissemination from the aviation authority addressed to all civil public use airports that its landing field is already usable.

The P379.46 million newly upgraded airport development project is one of the major Mindanao Super Region projects which underwent improvement since 2006. Last October, President Gloria Arroyo inaugurated the airport after it was completed two months earlier.

A source from the Air Philippines said their company will probably operate a Bombardier turboprop aircraft for the Pagadian-Cebu route while a Cebu Pacific official told this paper they will be having a probing flight using their A319 plane.

LTO Strictly Enforces Road Safety Policies

THE FULL IMPLEMENTATION of road safety policies will be implemented this year without let up, Land Transportation Office (LTO)-9 Regional Director Aminola Abaton said over the weekend. This means that there will be strict enforcement of laws governing

the use of helmets, early warning device and the mandatory use of seat belts as well as the impounding of colorum vehicles and fly-by-night PUJs, without franchises.

Abaton added this campaign was not fully set straight by LTO last year as they prioritized first the education and training of their personnel and LTO-deputized members of the PNP, as well as local and provincial traffic enforcers’ auxiliary units.

It was learned that the Presidential Anti Colorum and Kotong Task Force (PACKTAF), headed by Usec. Roy Quiamco, already started their operations in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Sibugay and Pagadian City early this month.

The PACKTAF employs selected LTO, DOTC, HPG, AFP and PNP elements who go after illegal practices such as colorum operations and mulcting.

Last May, PACKTAF’s national campaign led to the arrest of 63 PNP personnel who were involved in these violations and 79 other individuals from the LTO, LTFRB and various LGUs for extortion and other related crimes.

“When operations on road safety policies will be implemented in Zambosur, the driving public, commuters and motorists will not anymore worry because they have been informed and educated already,” Abaton assured.

He also said LTO will still set up checkpoints at strategic areas on the highways around the Zamboanga Peninsula and a team of road-safety personnel will be posted on an 8-hour period to ensure that colorum vehicles and those without warning devices or registrations are intercepted and impounded.

It was gathered that the LTO is now implementing a quality management system to comply with international standards of issuing drivers' licenses.

The latest statistic obtained by this paper shows that LTO-9’s revenue collection for 2008 totaled P204,560,063, surpassing their target of P184,840,000.

Let me just do some rebattle regarding your post zoro..

If any of Cerilles' projects benefited their own interest just like Tubod-Lakewood Road. I might say that the constituents as well. 1st: whether the resort is owned by Cerilleses but still with the presence of such resort could generate more jobs as sooner or later it will attract tourists.

2nd: The JHCerilles State College is the first state college in the province, and I guess it's all fair to give them that credit, People won't care if you say that this institution makes their names immortal. Those who are complaining are just jealous and insecure because they didnt do such initiatives to make their names immortal. whether you'll agree or not, they somehow deserved it.

If you're asking MAO RA NI? Well, you'll never know..

Dont you ever say that this is not an issue of comparison between Cerilles and their predecessor coz as a Zambosurian I deserve to express or should I say compare these politicians who once lead our province. Im not saying that Cerilles would have to stay but if you noticed in my older post I have only shared what I have noticed in our province.

Lastly, the cassava Project issue. It would be so malicious for you to say that the cassavas were planted in Cerilles' land. Why? because my father is a beneficiary of the said project. and I personally know that we also benefitted that project and so as my neighbors...

Since I was a child and there was no Zambo Sibugay yet, that part in the Philippines is already known for its raw rubber. Our relatives in the province would constantly talk about the said rubber plantation. And hangtod ron nga adult na ko (pero bata pa gihapon :D ). And so far, I haven't heard yet any rubber plantation in the Philippines that can match the production of Zambo Sibugay.

Karon akong uncle kay involved sa mga suppliers sa fertilizer for rubber trees sa Ipil.

Unta supportaan og ayo na sa local and national government. Aron modako na atong income sa exports kay bati pud kaayo nang nagsige na lang tag import gikan sa China. Ang China ray nabolahan hinuon.

kabasalan is a municipality after ipil...tunga sa ipil ug kabasalan ang naga..layo ra kaayo sila...i nver heard pa of the fusion thingy except diri... far off ra siguro kaayo xa na idea..:>...

kabasalan is a fairly progressive town, seafoods (though not that abundant production as before) and rubber are its main products...my father worked for nearly 20 years sa usa ka export (seafoods) company sa la paz, naga but unfortunately ni naug kalit ang production..something to do with the nature siguro, competition, or internal company problems (papang wont tell me..hehe..basta bankrupt na sila nationwide, pipila nalang ka plants ang nabilin)...daghan sad to na shell-off na workers, luoy...

rubber production of sibugay sharply declined the past few years kay the trees have grown very old, but many are now replaced and are nearing maturity so expected nga mu.pick-up balik ang rubber production..its a part of the game..:>...the DA actually encourages the people in planting rubber, they have booths kapag araw ng sibugay...basilan also has a good rubber production, though mas dako lang ang sa sibugay..:>

mao na ang next thing dapat sa ipil...industy...industry nga mag.focus sa pag.utilize sa rubber..dili lang as raw material but hopefully as finished product na..:>...kulangan sad ug awareness ang populace (philippines as a whoel actually) sa importance sa industry, most care for the immediate and more visible signs of so called "progress" like malls and restaurants...

and...jalosjos is running sa ipil!!!..what a kaayo.. di unta makadaug...look at zamboanga del norte, basin musunod ang sibugay!!!...sorry for the supporters ni jalosjos diri..

Basilan can equally compete Zamboanga Sibugay in terms of Rubber production. The island has huge rubber plantations like Menzi, etc.

In Zamboanga Sibugay, Goodyear and Pioneer rubbers are actually having large operations in the area, specifically Naga and Kabasalan areas.

Since I was a child and there was no Zambo Sibugay yet, that part in the Philippines is already known for its raw rubber. Our relatives in the province would constantly talk about the said rubber plantation. And hangtod ron nga adult na ko (pero bata pa gihapon :D ). And so far, I haven't heard yet any rubber plantation in the Philippines that can match the production of Zambo Sibugay.

Karon akong uncle kay involved sa mga suppliers sa fertilizer for rubber trees sa Ipil.

Unta supportaan og ayo na sa local and national government. Aron modako na atong income sa exports kay bati pud kaayo nang nagsige na lang tag import gikan sa China. Ang China ray nabolahan hinuon.

One of the proofs that Zamboanga Sibugay's importance in Rubber Industy is the presence of the Rubber Testing Center of the Department of Agriculture in the Province. Its in WESMIARC in Ipil.

About 80 percent of the 9.7 million ha of rubber plantations established worldwide for latex production in 1999, are in Southeast Asia; 72 percent of the total (or 5.2 million ha) are in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand (IRSG 1999). With an overall area of more than 3.5 million ha, Indonesia is now the world’s largest producer of natural rubber.

In 1990, 64 percent of the total area planted with rubber in Southeast Asia was overmature. In Malaysia alone the figure was over 85 percent of the plantations, with a total available timber volume of 543 million m3, thus indicating a decrease in replanting over time. The total annual available volume of rubberwood in the area of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was estimated at about 17 million m3 (Ser 1990). However, only a small portion of this calculated volume was actually converted. From 1982 to 1992 rubberwood production figures for Malaysia increased from 30 000 m3 to 1 872 000 m3 (Malaysian Ministry of Primary Industries 1993).

Hey i was just wondering if anyone has ever stayed at

Hotel Alindahaw, in Pagadian city and if so maybe can give

a review? I looked at the website, but there were no pic. of

the Hotel, only the rooms. If anyone has some recommendations

it would be nice, i will be staying there for a few days:cheers:

Alindahaw is a pretty good one. just across the highway is the gaisano Capital,. the only problem is the ceiling of the hotel is a little low. But if you like swimming then Springland Hotel is a good recommendation. you will enjoy its cold temperature swimming pool and its rooms are pretty nice also, its price is very reasonable. and youll love their seafoods, its one of their specialties. Guillermo hotel is my favorite, located at the central area of the city, walking distance to malls, cafes, bars, banks, and with reasonable price too.:):cheers:

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – Close to 5,000 public and private elementary schoolchildren in the Zamboanga Peninsula are scheduled to take the 2010 National Achievement Test (NAT) to be administered nationwide by the Department of Education (DepEd) in early March or before the close of the current school year.

Region 9 office of the DepEd Director Walter O. Albos said the staging of the NAT for Grades 3 and 6 pupils, announced recently by Education Secretary Jesli A. Lapus, seeks to assess the schoolchildren’s level of competencies in major subject areas in the curriculum.

These learning areas, Albos said, include Mathematics, Science, English and Filipino and Heograpiya, Kasaysayan, and Sibika (HeKaSi).

According to Albos, all elementary school administrators, together with their teachers, in the Region 9 schools divisions of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Pagadian City, Zamboanga City, Dipolog City, Isabela City (Basilan) and Dapitan City have started preparing for the nationwide test which will be administered by the DepEd’s National Educational Testing and Research Center (NETRC).

The DepEd 9 director explained that the NAT, aside from measuring the academic performance of pupils, also serves as a tool to determine each child’s weakness and strength to enable their respective school heads and mentors to adopt appropriate instructional strategies and interventions.
