BY MARIT STINUS-REMONDE

Pagadian City, the capital city of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur, easily pales in comparison with the more populous, more colorful and exotic Zamboanga City. True enough, my companions quickly ran out of places to show me, but this doesn’t make Pagadian City a dull place or a place not to watch.

Shoe Mart has reportedly bought a big property in a still agricultural and rural corner of the city. The City Commercial Center (or C3 Mall) is currently being constructed by the city government adding to the already existing shopping centers. Road widening projects are ongoing everywhere in the city.

An executive order issued by President Corazon Aquino in 1990 made Pagadian City the regional government center, but the order was only implemented in 2004. There has been resistance among officials and employees of the affected government agencies to transfer from Zamboanga City. Today, however, most agencies have transferred to Pagadian City with only a few still in Zamboanga City.

The presence of more than 40 national government agencies and offices is of course a boost to the local economy. Unfortunately, the area still struggles with negative perceptions of a public that associates everything in Mindanao with the Abu Sayyaf Group. The attack on Ipil in 1995 is still something that scares businessmen outside of Mindanao.

Yes, there are Muslim communities in Pagadian City and Zamboanga del Sur. The municipality of Labangan reportedly has a large Muslim population. Pilferage of electricity is a big problem in this town, according to Zamboanga del Sur 1 Electric Cooperative (ZAMSURECO I) but pilferers include both Muslims and Christians.
Even big businessmen in Pagadian City have not been ashamed to illegally tap electricity.

That Zamboanga del Sur is still a struggling rural community is evident from the fact that more than one third of the electric consumers are so-called life-liners. That means that they are being subsidized by other consumers. ZAMSURECO 1, like other electric cooperatives in Mindanao , has been challenged by the power supply crisis that has crippled Mindanao ’s economy since February. The power crisis, about which distribution utilities could do very little except promote conservation and implement curtailment schemes, negatively affected the image of the electric cooperst party 1-CARE.

The politicians and the public will most likely have forgotten the long brownouts as soon as the supply situation returns to normal. But the electric cooperatives lost millions of pesos on the crisis. Power generation projects must be identified and commenced soonest to prevent future crises. And better if it addresses the current reality: That only two companies will control the generating capacity in Mindanao once the privatization of the local assets of National Power Corporation has been completed. In other parts of the country electric cooperatives have already been presented with ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ contracts by power generating monopolies. This is one of the effects of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001.

ZAMSURECO 1 is, like many other electric cooperatives, venturing into hydro power but the dry spell has revealed that hydro power has its limitations. In addition, mobilizing the capital for these projects still presents a big challenge to electric cooperatives.

Cebu Pacific recently introduced flights to Pagadian City—four times a week from Mactan Cebu to Pagdian City and vice versa, and three times a week to and from Manila. Pagadian Airport is probably the only airport in the country where the security personnel will ask to see a passport the moment they hear a foreign sounding accent. However, the manual baggage inspection, as I personally experienced it, is a lot more thorough than what I have seen in other airports where x-ray machines are either absent or defective.

Pagadian City and the nearby towns have the usual sights to offer tourists, good food (if one knows the good restaurants such as TRU LAB (which is an acronym for Tilapia, Rumpi, Ulang, Lukon, Alimango and Bangus), local delicacies, handicrafts and a butterfly garden. A golf course is under construction in Molave—intriguing because it is quite far from where one expects to find golf players—but who knows what developments the future might bring. With the airport open, Pagadian City and its surrounding towns have become more accessible and attractive for visitors and investors.

LGUs Get Desktop Computers And GPS Devices From Spanish Gov’t

AT LEAST 14 local government units (LGUs) in region 9 received desktop computers and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices from the Spanish government thru the international development partners: United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in cooperation with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) as its implementing partners during the turn-over ceremony held at Hotel Alindahaw, Pagadian City recently.

The recipient LGUs were: Mutia, Jose Dalman, Kalawit, Katipunan, Siayan, Siocon, and Sirawai of Zamboanga del Norte; Aliicia, Payao, and Titay of Zamboanga Sibugay; and Lapuyan, Midsalip, and Tigbao of Zamboanga del Sur.
They were part of the 36 LGUs in 12 provinces located in 5 regions in the country who were identified as benefeciaries of the P1.5-M worth of computers and GPS devices in a package, under the MDGF-1919 program.

The program implementors have chosen said municipalities and local water service providers to develop, operate and manage effectively their local water resources by improving efficiency and increasing their capability to provide quality potable water to the poor.

DILG Undersecretary Austere Panadero, who led the turn-over ceremony said the computers and GPS devices are “very effective equipment for the LGUs to undertake baseline survey on water and sanitation”.

“The LGUs absolutely need these equipments to carefully plan and come up with a good water system,” Panadero stressed, adding that the GPS hardware can help plan exactly where the location of the water lies.”

Lapuyan Mayor Daylinda Sulong thanked the donor of the program as well as its implementing partners for choosing her municipality as one of the benefeciaries.

‘I really appreciate the program because it will greatly contribute to the development of our town,’ she said. “I will commit 100 percent support for the successful implementation of the program,”
The beneficiaries thru their respective provincial government have executed a Memorandum of Agreement with the DILG which formalizad their intention in joining the program.

By the end of the program, target muncipalities are expected to develop and utilize their own Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) toolboxes, customer service codes, updated tariff setting and regulation guidelines.

The remaining 22 recipient LGUs are from regions III (Cagayan), V (Bicol), X (Northern Mindanao), and XIII (CARAGA).

Other personalities who attended the program were DILG Regional Director Paisal O. Abutazil, Kathelene P. Manguene, MDGF JP program manager (NEDA), and Ma. Fe Crismilla Banluta, chief, Planning Division Water Supply and Sanitation Program Management Office (DILG), and municipal mayors. -

Hello! Congratulations to the Catholic community of Ipil and Zamboanga Sibugay for having elevted the Territorial Prelature of Ipil into a Diocese (since the Ipil town fiesta 2010).

Any photos for the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker (Ipil Cathedral) as of now? Is there any new project for the Cathedral of Ipil (eg. renovation, reconstruction)?

Thank you very much...

Hmm. Wala palang sinehan yung Gaisano? Sayang naman yun space ng mall kung ganun. Diba it's more or less about the same size sa Mindpro Mall ng Zamboanga City?

Ang gaisano is more or less twice the size of Mindpro. yung BE may plano sila mag put up ng cinema sa kanilang expansion, lets all hope na ma pursue na nila ang expansion as soon as possible...

Great for Pagadian! :okay: Sayang nga talaga yung space ng Gaisano if ganun nga siya kalaki tas walang sine. Di nila naeconomize nang mabuti ang space ng mall. Anyway, about sa content nung Gaisano (I mean, the stores in the mall), marami rin ba yung mga sikat na meron sa Mindpro like Guess, Penshoppe, Bench, Oxygen, Crocs, Giordano, ganun? Can you mention some? Haven't been pa kasi to Pagadian. Salamat :)

actually marami pang leasing space sa gaisano.. it has just recently opened..kaya di pa masyadong marami ang naka pasok.. pero meron din namang sikat sa stores sa loob.. Like: Gibi, David's Salon, BUM, Spruce, RRJ & LEE ..tapos di pa sure and Penshoppe at bench sa gaisano.. pero they are trying... kac yong beach has their own boutique na kac sa pagadian.. nasa peoples plaza.. they are not ready for another boutique.. HIndi kac kagaya sa mindpro na matagal na... maybe latter time.. papasok din yong iba...It has also telecommunication outlets.. ang GLOBE...

Mas marami kac yong food retails... Kagaya nang Jollibee, MCDonals, Greenwich and Mang Inasal..plus the food stores at the lower groundfloor.....It has also MLhuiller Jewelyer na minimal lang mag open nang branch sa isang lugar.. It has a Bingo area chaka Casino type at Fun World.. ganun ang loob nang gaisano..

Siguro nga the tenants are on their feasibility studies pa. Best of luck to Pagadian! :) Is BUM the same po as B.U.M. Equipment? I went to their website kasi and saw that it is a US brand pala. That's really great for you to have such a store. Yung Spruce naman is, according to their website, "a young, dynamic retail and distribution company that brings global fashion lifestyle brands and the brands of young Filipino designers to Northern and Western Mindanao." At first I thought it's an international brand kasi ang ganda ng pangalan. It's a distributor pala of famous brands just like The Sidewalk in Southway. And speaking of Southway, napakasimilar pala sa content ang Gaisano at Southway, well, at least sa ilang tenants. ^^ Gaisano kasi has Jollibee, McDonald's, Greenwich and Mang Inasal, while Southway has Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, and Mang Inasal. Gaisano has a Globe Office while Southway has The Sun Shop. Gaisano has Spruce, Southway has The Sidewalk. Gaisano and Southway both have David's Salons. Gaisano has Gibi while Southway naman has Converse (well, they both sell shoes naman. Haha. Gibi is in Mindpro kasi and a defunct store in Yubenco.). Gaisano has B.U.M. while Southway has Adidas (both specialize in sport products). Gaisano's got RRJ and Lee while Southway has Bayo and Marcella. Gaisano has MLhuiller while Southway naman has Oro Jewelry (owned by a local chain of pharmacies, convenience stores, and jewelry shops). Gaisano has Fun World while Southway has World of Fun.

I got this from Wikipedia in the article about GCP. I want to be clarified with some stuff lang po if you don't mind, at magshare na rin ng kaunting info. :)

Food and Dining:

Mang Inasal (3rd branch in Zamboanga Peninsula)
-1st branch is in Southway Mall, Zamboanga City. Where is the second branch located po? Btw, the 4th branch of Mang Inasal is in Yubenco Mall, still in Zamboanga City.

Greenwich (1st franchise in Pagadian City, third Zampen city to open this pizza chain)
-1st ZamPen City to have a Greenwich store is Zambo City (which currently has 3 stores and an on-the-go counter). Which ZamPen City is the second one to have a Greenwich store?

Jollibee (Pagadian's second branch)
-Base on the trend sa Zambo City, I guess there'll be another Jollibee branch in C3. Haha. Sa ZC kasi halos lahat ng bagong bukas na establishments na may pinaparentahang malaking stalls ay may Jollibee branch kaya 10 na ang branches nila dito so far.

McDonald's (Zamboanga Peninsula's third branch)
-The first two branches are the ones in Zamboanga City, right?

And sabi pala ng kaibigan ko from Pagadian na meron na daw pala kayong Filinvest subdivision na underconstruction? That's good! Development all around the peninsula.

You must not forget that the most iconic symbol of Pagadian is the "supersonic" tricycles.Any tourist, foreign or local would always talk about it after their trip and that's what makes the city be remembered for any visitor. It's good to have these malls but they can just be any other mall on any city. A tourist will remember the experience riding the tricycle going to the mall, not the shopping done at the store. It must be promoted agressively as the branding for the city, just like London and its double-decker red buses, or New York and its yellow cabs. You've been to Pagadian?...Yes!,those tricycles!

That would be great news for you! Let's just hope the momentum won't subside. It's great na national investors are already beginning to see the potential of the different cities in Mindanao. Btw, the simplest way that most economists in the Philippines use to assess progress is by counting the number of Jollibee stores a place has. Yap. This is true, no joke. Jollibee kasi is a symbol of the masses. Kaya the number of Jollibee stores a place has indicates the willingness of the masses to purchase goods. The more Jollibee, the higher the demand and the greater the economy. As you can see, Pagadian has already had its second branch of Jollibee, that indicates that the economy of Pagadian is growing. The gap naman between the opening of one Jollibee to another indicates the pace of economic growth. This isn't based on a scientific research but on the intensive observation of economists in the Philippines. (AND also the existence of a Jollibee store in a place indicates peace and the number of branches indicates the extent of peace. ^^)

Banks don't usually reflect the consuming capacity of the people living in a particular place. Banks usually show na people are willing to store money and not spend them pa. Banks indicate the wealth of the people and not necessarily the money that people are willing to spend for consumption of goods and services. :) At tsaka, I don't think naman na any particular bank would be a symbol of continuous progress. I guess CiTiBank is willing to invest in Pagadian because the competion between banks there is not as intense as in other cities. I mean, why put up more banks in cities/places that already have lots and lots of banks? ^^

why... is their any CiTiBank in Zamboanga City.. Iconic say.. Pagadian just left it up for itself.. na mag upgrade.. to a high class city.. coz it this days.. soon Pagadian shall be call as a highly urbanized city... i hope so...

CitiBank has no branch in Zamboanga. But there are more than 40+ banks that cater the needs of Zamboanga City and the region.

Maybe within this year or the next, Pagadian's population may rise up to 80,000 in order to become the HUC in accordance of the ongoing 2010 census of population. The minimum population required for such is 200,000 and if Pagadian wants to have its own congressional seat, it should be more than 250,000.

Zamboanga City, due to its large land area, have most of the areas underdeveloped, especially in the east coast. It is surrounded by eastern and western seas. Pagadian, on the other hand, is surrounded by municipalities in Zambosur. If Pagadian wants to become the next or new economic hub of Zamboanga Peninsula or willing to edge out Zamboanga, here are the possibilities (in my opinion):

*Pagadian should have upgraded or improve its seaport in order to accomodate major shipping lines such as Super Ferry and Negros Navigation. Express ferries are also needed to serve trips from Pagadian to Zamboanga, Ipil and Cotabato City.

*Zamboanga City was being eyed by a group of lawyers headed by Atty. Luistro of Integrated Bar of the Philippines to convert into a province since 1999. However, this was not formally pushed through because of the limitations to become a province. The requirement for creating a province shall have a land area of 2,000 sq. km, Zamboanga City has 1,483 sq. km in land area. This conversion will worsen economically and financially. The fact of this development is that Pagadian wants to become the largest city in land area by converting the landscape of Zamboanga (ex-regional capital) into a province. Either remained as city or converted into a province, Zamboanga is still the HUC and has the biggest number of residents in Zambo Pen.

*Zamboanga Peninsula has 4 universities:
*Ateneo de Zamboanga University
*Western Mindanao State University (composed of Main Campus in Zamboanga, and extension campuses in the barrios of San Ramon and Curuan in the city, Pagadian City, and other parts of ZamPen)
*Universidad de Zamboanga (Zamboanga City and Ipil Campuses)
*Jose Rizal Memorial State University (Dipolog City)
Besides WMSU extension campus, Pagadian is yet to have a university. The most potential schools vying for the elevation as university are Southern Mindanao Colleges and Medina Colleges. Ipil has only one univesity campus in UZ Ipil Campus.

One lesson: Zamboanga's worst loss may mean Pagadian's greater gain for development...

Cebu Pacific Flies Manila–Pagadian Route

http://pagadian.org/images/stories/june/Cebu%20Pacific%20(CEB)%20VP%20for%20Airport%20Services%20Jomar%20Rodriguez.jpg

THE NUMBER ONE airline in the Philippines, Cebu Pacific (CEB) launches its maiden flight from Manila to Pagadian last June 9. It first flew to the airline’s 33rd destination last May 27, 2010 when it began flights from Cebu.

This route from Manila is a Monday, Wednesday, Friday service, using CEB’s Airbus A319 aircraft. The lowest possible year-round ‘Go Lite’ fare for this route is P1,988.

The flight leaves Manila at 11:35am, and arrives in Pagadian at 1:10pm. The return flight departs Pagadian at 1:40pm and arrives in Manila at 3:15pm.

With this flight schedule, Pagadian residents can connect to Bangkok, Brunei, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei.

“We are very happy with the new Cebu Pacific service connecting Manila and Pagadian, on top of its existing Cebu-Pagadian flights. This will definitely give easy access to investors and tourists who wish to visit the area,” Mayor Sammy Co said.

He added that tourist attractions were being developed such as the Kendis Caves and the Manga Serenity Park, a virgin forest three minutes from the airport.

“We believe that Cebu Pacific fares are very affordable and comparable to boat fares,” Co added. The entire city and city council were at the airport and welcomed the first passengers from Manila.
For more information on flights to Pagadian, passengers can call (02) 7020-888 or (032) 230-8888 or go to www.cebupacificair.com or http://funtours.cebupacificair.com. Those without credit cards can still book online and pay via CEB partner banks.

One of Asia’s fastest growing airlines, CEB flies to 33 domestic and 15 international destinations using the youngest aircraft fleet in the country. Aside from Pagadian, CEB flies to the following Mindanao destinations direct from Manila and Cebu: Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Dipolog, Ozamiz, Zamboanga, Cotabato, General Santos and Davao.

The number of universities in Zamboanga City may increase in the next few years since Pilar College and ZSCMST have already filed their "application" for university status PLUS there's UP-Zamboanga which is just waiting for the approval from the next congress before they start the construction of the university campus.

There is currently no Citibank branch in Zamboanga City and neither in Pagadian. The bank's proposal to put up a branch in your city is still a rumor. But if the rumor's true, then that would be a very good news for Pagadianons! It means the city's having more money.

I think ang revenue collection ng isang place ay isa rin sa mga qualifications for a city to become a highly urbanized city. ^^

I wasn't comparing Zamboanga City to anything/anywhere. Check the whole paragraph/sentence carefully. Only Zamboanga City's name was mentioned. It was merely an additional information to the list of universities that another forumer posted. I thought you would find it worth knowing but it seems that it projected a different meaning to you. I'm so sorry if ever you have been offended.

If I may intervene, I got your point but for me it is not proper to post the improvement of your city to other city's thread, although your intention is good but you'll be misunderstood by other forumer....I guess and I believe we have Colleges and Universities thread for Mindanao...in which you can post many schools improvements/developments in your city.

To avoid conflict and not to deviate with our purpose in this thread..please post properly...

That's the reason I apologized. Again, I didn't mean to compare the two cities. The info that I've posted was, as I've said, an addition to the incomplete information previously posted and nothing more than that. I apologize to all Pagadianons who may have been offended by the post. I won't be posting any more posts similar to that controversial post in your thread ever again. Promise. Sorry for disturbing the calm atmosphere.

Thanks to jundem for introducing me to the twists and turns here in this forum. I'm not really familiar with it yet since it's just been less than a month since I joined in. But then again, I'm not making an excuse for my faulty gesture.

Sorry talaga sa lahat ng taga-Pagadian. Hindi ko talaga sinasadya na ganun ang ipalabas. I sincerely apologize to each and every Pagadianon whether or not they've read the post. I really am sorry.

Btw, it's okay Pagadianongyud. I know that it's normal for one to react that way when one feels belittled or oppressed. I, myself, would have reacted the same way if I felt the way you felt. I was too insensitive to actually just post it right away without thinking about the possible interpretations that different people would have on it. I've learned my lesson. I really promise that I won't be doing it again. I hope we'll start all over again without grudge to one another.

Ang ganda!! Sobra!! Hope the LGU of Lakewood, Zambosur with the help of congressional funds from Cerilles, will transform this area into a national park with eco-tourism zone! Maganda talaga 'to! The sooner, the better! :okay: It will definitely boost Zambosur's tourism potentials. With that, hotel/s will sprout in nearby areas.:banana::banana:

Malapit lang din pala sa dagat ang downtown Pagadian? Kala ko sa bundok banda ang downtown area niyo kasi diba kaya nga ganun ang ichura ng tricycles niyo eh kasi pababa-pataas ang mga daanan. Now I know. ^^

Ngayon ko lang di nalaman na puede palang magmay-ari ng mall ang gobyerno.

BTW, yung design ng mall is similar sa G-Mall Davao no? Yung cylindrical corner kasi at yung design ng entrance/exit sa side. Btw, yung car park neto sa parking building or open grounds? Congrats on this project, btw!

At tsaka, invite ko pala mga Pagadianons sa World Tour Concert ng Air Supply sa Zamboanga City Coliseum on Saturday, June 26, 2010. Hope you could come! :) Get your seats ASAP pala kasi tickets have their corresponding seats na, bale the ticket you'll has an assigned seat na in the venue. So better get your ticket soon or all the good seats will be gone! ^^ Konting konti nalang rin pala ang mga ticket na natitira dahil marami nang mga nagpareserve mula pa noong unang inadvertise ang concert (weeks and weeks ago). Some of those who reserved come from Pagadian, Dipolog, and other near by places. :) See you in the concert, Pagadianons!

No.. lakewood is a town in southern part of zamboanga del sur.. about an hour and a half travel from Pagadian...
and this will be the only resort on this lake, no more no less. The mayor of the town is the brother of the congresswoman who owns the resort, and of course the husband is the governor of the province where Lakewood belongs. Well, they can keep the lake as clean as it is, makes sense since the governor is also the former environment secretary.

i have quiet much of stories to tell about the area, i used to visit the place for a good regular hair cut that cost 20 pesos only. the night cafe, was once the famous and the most yummy BBQ's in the city, together with the balbacuas, we with my frends used to hangout there more often than not... and a lot of other carinderias, barter trade stores, celfon shops, tailoring shop, etc., in other words this place was once really messy and is a big eyesore in the very heart of the city. good thing those messiness was just a thing in the past, bravo to the LGU of pagadian. Sorry litigs got no picture of the old parking area. maybe some of the members here might have one.

Zambosur Medical Center Admissions Near 800 A Month

PAGADIAN CITY – Admissions in the Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center (ZSMC) reach an average of 775 patients monthly, latest information from the said hospital says. Chief Nurse Helen Arao disclosed that for the first quarter of this year,

hospital figures of regular in-patients and natural deliveries remain the same while a variation in both major and minor operations, including caesarean deliveries and the number of mortalities has been observed. She cited as example the 65 major operations for January and February, which increased to 72 in March. Seven minor operations were recorded in the first two months and which hiked to eight in March.

A lone patient was transferred to another hospital in January and was increased to three in March as caesarean deliveries for January reached 67, then reduced by February to 37 and two notches down by March.

Fifty-two dialysis patients were recorded in January and February, which increased to 64 by March while there were 38 recorded mortalities in January and 28 by February and March.

To recall, ZSMC announced last April it has a limited visitation time to maximize therapeutic periods for their admitted patients.

Arao explained the new policy does not totally restrict quick visits or appointments between family relatives and their patients but only regulate the length of daily schedule of visits from 10:00 in the morning to 12:00 noon and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

"The reason for this is to give time for hospital sanitation and housecleaning during mornings and for nurses and doctors to make their rounds to give medications and treatment," she said.

For this, Arao said ZSMC need to decongest its wards in order not to disturb the medical staff in their work.
"In the afternoons until 8:00 p.m. we want our patients to get an early rest to restore their health. Kinahanglan kaayo nila makapahulay og sayo without the noise," she said.

The new policy likewise prohibits children below 10 years to come and visit patients in the medical facility "because they are prone to contagious diseases and children have less resistance to diseases they might contract while loitering in hospital premises,"
the chief nurse explained.

As for watchers, ZSMC only allow 3-4 persons at most for every patient while strictly limiting this to two when there are numerous admissions.

"We do not allow them also to roam around the hospital and we have a watcher's class to educate them on this policy," Arao stressed.

When asked why there are patients sleeping along the lobby of the hospital, Arao clarified that ZSMC has only 100 beds but they opted "to accommodate everybody who comes for medical attention, especially the poor."

And since the ward spaces are constricted, they temporarily allow some of the patients with negligible case admissions to sleep in the lobby but transfer them once there are discharges from the ones sleeping inside. - BROUGHT TO YOU BY PAGADIAN EXPRESS

aren't mbell be happy that not only Zamboanga Prosper in ZAMPEN... Its a wise act to transfer it to another city to let the other city to progress... This is a stately issue... But its not proper to blame everything to the mayor... The mayor did his best for his beloved city.. He makes every thing possible at it was his act of kindness to the city... Try to look back again you mayor please for the past terms if he has gone everything he has to his city to prosper.. please don't be selfish of your progress...

This statement is not to insult or to judge your mayor but its my statement to re-bat your unrighteous statement to our beloved mayor..and to our city.... Please be happy also to our progress... No wonder that my mother thought me everything when i was born i Zamboanga that SOME of the city people are so selfish and arrogant about what they have...

At the end of the day, we should be happy about this progress... Please... we don't let anyone to absurd this influential state-maybe...

Sana, if Pagadianon officials think wisely, then they should have field sub-offices of the affected departments instead of transferring. The population of Zamboanga is almost 800,000 and should be developed more.

But tanggaping na lang natin sana na agreed tayo sa paglipat ng Regional Center sa Pagadian if permission from us Zamboanguenos is provided. They should also aware of the consequences of the transfer.

To prove Cerilles wrong, it's not the end for Zamboanga... Why not set an example of Naga City, which is the Heart of Bicol despite not being the regional center of R-V? Bacolod City's population is much higher than Iloilo City (capital of R-VI), but it always leads in terms of development. Dagupan City became an independent component city and became the center of economic activity of the Ilocos Region despite of not being the regional center.

But in any rate, let's pray that there will be another, more peaceful and orderly way of pakikipagsundo sa dalawang magkalabang lungsod ng |ZAmPen.

^^

that's a nice gesture of you mbell... We should work hand in hand for the surging progress and betterment of our region - Zamboanga Peninsula! Let's be happy of the progress that's currently taking place in the corners of the whole region 9. I'm just happy that everybody's becoming proactive. I've already read several times in Zamboanga Times, Zamboanga Today, and other sites... heard on tv only... but regardless of witnessing personally or not, I am against that act...

Why not hear the sentiments of the employees and staff of the affected regioinal offices? I somewhat heard of the complaints from regional officers way back 2005-2009. Why is that Mayor Co file a case to force the offices to be transferred? Why don't he listen to the real grievances of the officers?

But in any rate, let's pray that there will be another, more peaceful and orderly way of pakikipagsundo sa dalawang magkalabang lungsod ng |ZAmPen.mbell please lang!analyze well...kasi para kang "EWAN" you can never compare VISAYAS CITIES from Zampen..taga zamboanga kaba tlga?dba malaki zampen pero development wise napag iwanan na tayo ng region 10..alam mo siguro reason kung bkt...i hope you stop blaming our official's on what they are doing..they are just doing there job....our official's also want's the best for our city i hope you understand...

I dont know but it seems like the the writer only provokes feud between the 2 cities... If this really happened, can someone post the video here so we can confirm that Cerilles really said those words??? :bash::bash::bash:

To Pagadian City officials, to prove that your city is worth progressing, why not tell major institutions in Zamboanga to transfer their main campuses in Pagadian? Why not have taxis? Why not jump past Zamboanga City the business environment? Why not expand largely the Airport in Muricay and the seaport to accomodate larger vessels? To ask you... does your city have a cultural background? Don't you see the date of the foundation of the city? Zamboanga City has long been the city during the Spanish colonial era and since its charter in 1937 became one of the most important hubs in Mindanao. Pagadian, on the other hand, achieved its status as a city in 1969. Are you corruptive of powers as Gloria used you to become the instrument of gaining Pagadian into the new economic hub and of losing Zamboanga from progression?

To Mayor Sammy Co, have you gone mad against Zamboanga City and its people? Do you have "secret relationships" with outcoming President Arroyo to help Zamboanga fall down? Do you have grudges against Zamboanga City? Are you jealous of Zamboanga's fast-rising development, that's why you want to have the regional center in your City of Pride and Boast, as high as the hills of Pagadian, feeling like heaven? Have you won the mayoralty race three times to use your powers improperly as mayor? Ang kaban ng bayan ay mapupunta na lahat sa Pagadian.

Think before you speak against the citizens of Zamboanga. Balang araw, mararamdaman mo ang kawalan dahil sa kayabangan mo.

your post is really disturbing... and i think its really immature... Again you're comparing these 2 cities... And why do you think Pagadian officials will do all those things?? Why transfer school campuses? why expand the airport?? simply because the demand is not yet high... it would be very illogical to do that, isnt it??

Of course, I am a Zamboangueño. I was born there when Zamboanga was still the regional center of Western Mindanao during the time of Marcos and I am really proud of it.

As for blaming the officials, I am sorry for that. But, may the best city win...

For the meantime, let the maritime industry stregthen by having re-introduction of fastcrafts from Pag-Zamboanga... I just miss those days... Seeing the beautiful scenery of our beloved Zamboanga Peninsula...

let's put some more pictures regarding ZamSur and Sibugay.... esp those tourism sites... the first thing that pops in my mind, is the 'Snake Sanctuary' in Olutanga Island. It should be aggressively promoted as part of the ZAMPEN Tour Package from Zambo North to Zambo South. Amazing Zamboanga!

BIR-RDO 92 Surpasses Target Collection By 12%

REVENUE DISTRICT Officer Atty. Nazrullah B. Conding revealed that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue District Office No. 92 surpassed by 12% its target tax collection in the first five months of this year.

In a forum sponsored by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) IX at Sunburst Restaurant which was attended by members of the local media, Conding reported that their office has collected P159,253,682.74 from January to May exceeding their target goal of P138,918.00 by P20,335,682.72 or 12%.
Conding said for 2010 they were given a quota of P405,154,000.00 for Pagadian City and Zamboanga del Sur. Because of the good flow in their tax collection, he is confident that they can reach their goal without any difficulty, although it depends largely on the cooperation of taxpayers in our locality, he added.

Conding also said that under his able leadership as the new Revenue District Officer (RDO), BIR-RDO 92 ranked 98th place in the collection of taxes among the 119 revenue district offices in the country. Last year, it ranked 112th because it failed to reach its goal and it also failed to reach the ‘top 50’ RDOs.

He stressed that the measures he instituted in surpassing their target goal in the first 5 months were as follows: 1) urging the employees of regional offices to remit their Withholding Tax Compensation; 2) implement both the ‘Oplan Kandado’ and ‘Project Iboto Mo’, where all the candidates in the May 10 polls are required to remit 5% expanded withholding tax based on their expenditures; 3) request Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) to remit their business tax in their office; and 4) cooperation of the local chief executives in the municipalities of the province.

It may be recalled that the regional offices customarily remit the taxes of their employees in Zamboanga City but when Pagadian City became the center of Regional Government in region IX, they were obliged to remit it in Pagadian.

At present, there are only about 16 of the 121 regional offices which remit taxes of their employees.
Conding appealed to the regional offices thru their respective regional directors to remit their taxes in Pagadian City, instead of remitting them to Zamboanga City.

He thanked PIA thru Regional Director Noemi B. Edaga for holding the forum and tapping the media to make the public aware of their activities especially, reminding the taxpayers to pay their taxes promptly because to him, taxes is the “life blood of the government.” – BROUGHT TO YOU BY PAGADIAN EXPRESS

City Economic Enterprise Earns P12.6-M For Q1

TOTAL COLLECTIONS by the City Economic Enterprise (CEE) Department of the city government of Pagadian reach P12,665,310.78 for the first quarter. CEE officer Lucille Juros said the above figure comes from CEE’s four divisions composed of the City Market,

Slaughter House, Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) and the City Fish Port. Of the mentioned divisions, the city market is a high raker with P7,487,162.20 although collected fees dipped to only one million plus beginning February from a P2,471,336.97 buena mano at the start of 2010.

Another earner is IBT with P1,983,529.30 postings for the 4-months period, steadily earning revenues of more than half-a-million pesos for the last two months after starting up with only P441,537.70 in January.

The City Fish Port in San Pedro is third, with P1,669,297.43 but its figures began dropping to only at P346,378.55 as of April, a big variance from its supposedly bright start of P494,307.45 takings in January.

Juros justifies the low take may have something to do with the gloomy fish catch by fishermen due to unfavorable weather.

To recall, both the fish port and IBT total collections were on an uptrend in 2009 as compared to the previous year.

As for the city abattoir, it only netted P1,525.241.85 for the first quarter. This is expected, Juros explained, as there has been a decrease in number of both hogs and cattle butchering attributed to other slaughtering activities done by meat shops, dealers and lechoneros outside the slaughter house.

In an earlier interview with Juros last January, she estimated an annual loss of P646,605.41 to such activities. It was not known, however, if the city did have an ordinance mandating all butchering practices to be done at the slaughter house.

The city abattoir collects fees in corral, slaughter, entrails, post mortem inspection and meat delivery van.
This paper once visited the butchering area located in Brgy. Napolan and found out that some equipment like hooks were lacking, there was no weighting scale for the hog section and only two meat inspectors do the daily rounds. For the record, an average of 952,987 kilos for cattle, 406,513 kilos for hogs, and 20,630 kilos for goats are butchered annually there.

^^ This is not the first time I've heard of tornadoes in Pagadian. A stronger one was occurred when I was still a child. It even lifted up some of my lola's kitchen utensils.

Tornadoes occur in Pagadian because of its topography--a wide but mountainous area directly facing the narrow sea. It contributes to the fast exchange of winds coming from the land and those coming from the sea.

Bad reporting affects Mindanao economy
Wednesday, July 14, 2010

PAGADIAN CITY -- Local media practitioners here unanimously call for responsible reporting on Mindanao, saying the unfair portrayal of Mindanao by the national media has continuously impeded efforts to accelerate the island's socio-economic growth.

In a focus group discussion on Mindanao 2020 peace and development framework plan here on June 18, members of the local media said that Mindanao's image has remained a big challenge in promoting the island as a preferred trade, tourism and investment destination.

Myrna Lumacad, a radio anchor of DXWO-Power 99, said that while the government and the private sector are doing their best to attract investors, a misleading report on Mindanao is more than enough to sabotage its economy.

"Say the war only happened in one barangay, but the way it's reported in a national TV is as if it's happening in the whole of Mindanao. It damages our economy," said Lumacad.

She said there may be some peace and security issues in some parts of the island but these should be accurately reported and not sensationalized.

Lumacad added that the national media should be educated on Mindanao's geography, culture, and multi-ethnicity.

"So that they (national media) will have an idea on the proximities of conflict-affected areas to the relatively peaceful cities and provinces," she said.

The island's image problem has also been a daunting challenge to Mindanao's tourism sector, especially those from the hospitality industry.

Jeffrey Almonte, vice president of Pagadian City Chamber of Commerce who manages a chain of hotels in Dipolog, Dumaguete, and Pagadian, said he is wary on how Mindanao has been portrayed throughout the years.

"Mindanao has always been portrayed as a rogue and lawless island," he said.

He added that most of the people in Luzon, Visayas, and abroad have negative impression on Mindanao because it's what they get from newspapers, TV, and travel advisories.

Almonte recalled that local businesses have been suffering from bouts of conflicts in some areas of Mindanao, the most recent of which was the armed conflict in 2008 during the botched signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD), an incident which forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

"I remember we were preparing then for the Mindanao Business Conference in Dipolog and we were really afraid on the turnout of attendance," Almonte said, adding that only half of the target exhibitors and 20 percent of the target conference participants came.

"I respect the media's freedom to report the news but I ask them to be well-informed," he said.

He also encourages people from Luzon and Visayas to get to know the real Mindanao.

"There's more to Mindanao than just bad news," Almonte said.

As part of a series of stakeholder consultations on the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan 2010-2030, the media consultation in Pagadian is currently being formulated as the island's development blueprint for the next 20 years.

A successor to the Mindanao 2000 Plan in mid-1990s, the M2020 plan outlines peace and development strategies for Mindanao in five themes, namely peace and security; governance, institutions and politics; economy and environment; human development and social cohesion; and enabling environment.

Spearheaded by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and Braintrust Inc., the M2020 project has conducted several focus group discussions, interviews and surveys with various stakeholders across Mindanao, a participatory approach to planning that seeks to establish the shared vision among Mindanawons and build a consensus on the long-term, holistic, and strategic peace and development road map for Mindanao. Di ko familiar aning mga bag-o nga hotels.. Pero nindot ang Roxan Hotel, affordable rapud ... It's conveniently located at the heart of the city, Pensione de Yllana maganda din daw at affordable as I have read it on a certain blog...
