future.architect February 19th, 2008, 03:15 AM a horrible building
kids February 19th, 2008, 03:18 AM Now that's modernism!
hopo February 19th, 2008, 12:43 PM this is without doubt the most dispicable bit of post millenia planning in the entirety of Manchestishire.
What were they thinking? its simply a scaled up corrugated shed the favelas of Brazil. Its such a prominent spot which held such potential till this pile of plop was built. A very sad day indeed....
Chogmook February 19th, 2008, 12:49 PM It's like the Arndale Tower has been chopped in half and the shops at the bottom boarded up.
Awful.
I would live there though, as then I wouldn't have to see the outside of it when I'm in it!
b4mmy February 19th, 2008, 01:20 PM the windows are too small...
Comdot February 19th, 2008, 01:58 PM i find it looks like the side of a prison. great location though.

GShutty February 19th, 2008, 02:23 PM I think Longford once posted an image of the original planning submission and the design was very similar to the Lowry hotel next door. Similar scale to now, but all glass fornted. it looked rather nice.
Somehow they got away with this! Horrific!

Take a bow Persimmon Homes and, I think, Leach, Rhodes Walker architects.
WeasteDevil February 25th, 2008, 11:20 PM How come the retail units, and I suppose due to being two floors they were also designed to accommodate small offices have not been taken?
Goldie March 6th, 2008, 01:28 AM I had to look through the deeds for Chapel Wharf a couple of years back- it might have been as part of Dandara's due diligence before they bought the site, I'm not sure now - but there was some correspondence in there relating to attempts to let the units. The Gaylord Indian restaurant that used to be off Spring Gardens was up for one but the previous owners of the site were after a Pitcher and Piano type place and turned them down on that basis...
Was it The Bridge that prompted Persimmon's decision to bin off city centre resi developments?
Architecty March 7th, 2008, 07:07 PM Now I realise that this is a stupid thing to admit, and I do think this building is most certainly more bad than good, but there’s something about it that I like. Ducks for cover.
I can never really put my finger on it, the proportions perhaps, limited palette of materials possibly. Maybe it’s just my contrary nature, and trying to like things that other people hate! It certainly isn’t a good enough twin to the Lowry, perhaps I just like it because it completes the pairing either side of the bridge and sort of a pedestrian gate to Salford. I’ll work it out one day.
