View Full Version : Dubai
gobshoite February 21st, 2008, 08:58 PM Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place but I've just pinched this off an LFC site and couldn't believe it, if You had never been to the place you would think it a work of a SF novelist.
The thing is though, is it beautiful? I'm sorry but I don't think so. Modern skyscrapers mixed with grand old buildings in cities are great but in a place where everything is new bang bang in yer face it lacks a certain charm and just reminds me of a cheap Las Vegas type party and somehow phoney.
I'm not saying I wouldn't love some of these things in Liverpool of course but we would offer a far better canvas for them with the much needed juxtaposition between old and new.
You could also have a bevy in them here!
wrth a look;

guenuk February 21st, 2008, 09:02 PM Funny you should mention Dubai becuase when/if they buy into Liverpool football club I wonder what opportunities this could potentially mean for the city especially in terms of exposure/business, I'm sure part of the reason they want to own Liverpool is in terms of brand awareness, works both ways, they want to promote Dubai and they'll use the Liverpool name to do so.

Yer, that has crossed my mind guenuk and I'd love it to be true but I just hope they don't make the workers on these projects live in mini shanti towns whilst they are being built (as in Dubai). Then again immigrant workers would possibly choose that over some areas of our city!
guenuk February 21st, 2008, 09:51 PM Controversial point as far as the mirgant workers are concerned! dubai's attitude could be infectious however, they do not know what the word impossible means....want a new island in the sea? done.
They could build us a nice new 'dubai' skyscraper....it would however probably be in the middle of the Mersey on on island of its own....just becos they can!
I am of course just talking daft but I would be quite excited in terms of the investment opportunities a link up of this kind could bring not just for the club but for the city as well.
HollyBlack February 21st, 2008, 09:53 PM Funny you should mention Dubai becuase when/if they buy into Liverpool football club I wonder what opportunities this could potentially mean for the city especially in terms of exposure/business, ...There is certainly scope for reclaiming land North of Wirral as part of some huge project. Rail connection to the New Brighton branch line for at least the construction equipment and for stone hauling is entirely feasible. Of course it is not a matter of mere sand dredging like Dubai due to our tides and currents. But revetment building techniques are a mature technology, it doesn't take much to change a revetment into a causeway or sea-wall.
It is really disappointing that UAE is not into Green Energy, especially since Liverpool Bay has such huge potential for Green Energy - arguably the best site in the whole world for tidal lagoons. Mind you UAE should be big on developing vegetation that will grow when irrigated with sea water too, another long term project essential for the survival of man and the planet.
westisbest February 21st, 2008, 10:09 PM They can built a mini dubai in liverpool any day:)

It is without doubt a very exciting place to visit, to live ? no. The old town does have a atmosphere but along the coast with row after row of towers it reminded me of Surfers Paradise in Queensland, no real heart and antisceptic.
Still this thread does give a chance to bore the pants off you by posting up a few of the 750 pics that I took:lol:..............

Babaloo March 9th, 2008, 02:23 PM You can dress it up anyway you like it's still a hell hole.
Evertonian March 9th, 2008, 08:10 PM Notice the appreciation of public spaces, parkland and lush greenery the arabs have.
Chogmook March 9th, 2008, 08:33 PM It looks like someone's took Sim City a little bit TOO seriously!
eyeam March 9th, 2008, 08:35 PM It's just all so artificial. It seems to me like if you lived there in an apartment block surrounded all around by towers that there would be no sense of place or community, like living in a hotel permanently
High rise buildings and city apartments are great... but only if they've grown in an organic way with a nice mix of old and new, high rise and low rise
I hope that if Liverpool Waters goes ahead it won't suffer from those problems too badly with Stanley Tobacco Warehouse, the clock tower and some other old industrial buildings hopefully retained and refurbished
