City Centre by Imanol
The city´s oldest side. Its spanish side. Today is a very commercial and touristic district although finances had move south to modern districts. The main problem here is traffic. It used to be rundown but since late ninety´s it has experience a good face-wash.

The park is located in the Museum of Contemporary Arts in the district of Barranco, however the buildings behind it are in the distict of Miraflores. Between the park and the builidngs is La Bajada Armendariz. This is a road that goes down to the city´s beaches. For those who dont know about Lima, the citys coastal area is located over cliffs.

La Molina, by Juan 1912
This district (county) is located in a Valley in the outskirts of Lima. Behind the hills (where you can see the top part of a highrise) is the city of Lima. As every suburb in a developing country, this district is a mix of rich and poor. There are very wealthy neighbourhoods such as El Haras, La Estancia, La Pradera and La Planicie, but also very poor ones like La Musa. Obviously most part of the district is middle class. Its commercial area is in the Raul Ferrero Avenue where you can find a mall and also independant shops and restaurants.

sebvill March 6th, 2008, 06:46 PM Pezet by Sebvill :)
The Pezet avenue is located in El Golf neighbourhood and is one of the four avenues that sorround the golf court. The neighbourhood is one of the expensier areas in Lima and one of its most traditional for the high class. Today is sorrounded by highrises that have a range of 15 to 28 floors, but their are also some nice big houses in the streets around. Theres a lot of construction going on in this area of high quality apartments.

Surf City, by sailorv (Flickr)
The Costa Verde is filled with surfers all year long, specially at summer time (December-April). There are many surf schools where children learn to surf since they are 6-7 years old. Some famous peruvian surfers are Sofia Mulanovich (world champion and number one in the female world competition), Anahi Gomez, Gabriel Alarcon, Javier Swayne, Gabriel Villaran, Sebastian de Romaña, Titi de Col, Magoo de La Rosa, Brissa Malaga, etc. New promises are Cristobal de Col and Valeria Solé. Peru is also famous for some surfing beaches like Pico Alto, Punta Hermosa, Mancora, Cabo Blanco, Chicama (the longest left wave in the World) and Cerro Azul (mentioned in the Surfin Safari song of the Beach Boys- also they mention the "shores of Peru").

This commercial street has a variety of shops like Max Mara or Ermenegildo Zegna. Also nice cafes like the Peruvian "Delicass", the Argentinian "Cafe Havanna" and the Colombian "Creppes & Waffles". The only problem is parking, its always full! This street together with Conquistadores, Santa Cruz and Comandante Espinar will be something like the "Rose Area" of Lima, althought its not known as it.

Adams3 April 2nd, 2008, 09:27 PM Cool. The colonial architecture is marvellous. Is there a general feeling of optimism in Peru these days regarding future economic development or is there broad resentment and frustration?
sebvill April 2nd, 2008, 09:46 PM Great optimism, the Economy grew 9% last year (construction grew over 15%) and it has been growing in an average 4,5% since 1992, after the chaotic 80´s. This year Lima is gonna host the Latin America-Europe Forum and the APEC (Pacific Forum).
The economy came from 52 billion US$ in 2002 to 109 billion US$ in 2007.

This avenue connects the City Centre to the districts of Jesus Maria (in the picture), Magdalena and San Isidro. In the 60´s this Avenue marked the end of the city in the northwest area. cleano April 18th, 2008, 03:06 AM Lima is a beautiful city and a very clean one.. my parents went there last year and they toll me that the city was out of their mind, some times the people dont get the real picture of the city just because they only see the things that they put on cable tv. congratulation Peruvians for that Great City (i will love to go visit and eat as much ceviche as i can..)
Olympiaki-Agones April 18th, 2008, 03:52 AM Is that how the whole city looks like or it's just one part of it? Looks pretty clean and organized.
thewild2007 April 18th, 2008, 04:29 AM ^^Lima isn't a perfect city enough (there are ugly places too), but there are many nice places like what u've seen at the pics. Lima is charming and wonderful, Limeños are hospitables and Peruvian food is considered one of the best ones around the world. :)
Lima is growing up and improving many things, like the public transportation system, streets, buildings, old and colonial buildings are being rescued from destruction, and Lima is better each day.
sebvill April 18th, 2008, 04:09 PM Is that how the whole city looks like or it's just one part of it? Looks pretty clean and organized.
Lima is like Manila, Istambul, Sao Paulo or any other big city in a fast developing country. Their are many poor areas but theres a lot of improvement going on everywhere.

Villa El Salvador,
This is one of the poorest areas in Lima. It started as a small community of people coming from the poorest areas in the southern highlands in the 60´s. They settled in the inhabitated desert plains, located southeast of the city. However in 1974 a huge earthquake occured in the Region of Ancash (North of Lima). The earthquake (combined with the overflowed of a dam) devastated hundrededs of towns. The survivors fled to Villa El Salvador, which was called their new Oasis of Hope. Today Villa el Salvador is a populated community with a flourishing industrial area. In the picture the New District Park opened two years ago. I have a question regarding this...
In Bogotá, since a couple of years ago, new laws prohibit the construction of buildings on the Eastern mountains, and now these lands are protected areas. Although these cliffs in Barranco do not have such vast nature, they are nice. What do people think of people building on them?
BTW, I've seen beautiful pics of Lima. Thanks for them. It definitely changed the way I thought of your city. Nice!
thewild2007 April 21st, 2008, 04:51 PM ^^ Bogota has many reasons to protect eastern mountains like Monserrate, cuz there are many woods on their clifts. Lima is a desert and Costa Verde just have some mosses on clifts... no woods, no animals, just insects, but there are other natural places inside Lima that are protected such as Pantanos de Villa, southern Lima, or many archeological ones like Huacas or Incas Ruins such as Pachacamac Ruins.

Real Felipe Fortress, Callao by Limanidad
This fortress is located in the port of El Callao. It was used to protect the port from pirates in times of ViceRoyalty. In days of the indipendencia many Spanish and notable natives of Lima entrenched there agains the Liberty Forces (Argentinians, Chileans and non-limeños Peruvians).
Lima was the only city in Latin America that didnt support the Independance from Spain. Limeños only accepted it when the ViceKing fled to the highlands with the local army. Thats why Trujillo and other Peruvian cities declared the independance before the capital city.

sebvill August 23rd, 2008, 03:25 AM Well obviously Ill put more pictures of the interesting places, isnt what everybody do in their threads?? come on, I havent put any single picture of a rich mansion in particular.
Fidel Castro (yeah your username says it all) 1992 was 16 years ago! Peru had just come out of hyperinflation, ecomomic ruin and terrorism. Today the country is growing at a rate of 10% this last semester and poverty has come down from 52% to 39% of th population in only 5 years. There´s still much to do, of course, but this country is Rocking dude, dont doubt it.
sebvill August 23rd, 2008, 03:54 AM Yeah except that for each picture of areas like La Victoria or Villa Salvador, you have ten of Miraflores, of historical buildings in the center or of some nice mansion in some of the other rich areas. Let's not take people for idiots...
The trully rich neighbourhoods in Lima are El Haras, La planicie, la pradera, Rinconada, La encantada, etc. Have you heard any of those names in this thread? the only rich suburb ive post is Casuarinas because of the view. Miraflores is middle class and San Isidro have very wealthy areas but is part of the inner city so its totally valid to put pictures of it.
eklips August 23rd, 2008, 04:23 AM You have a very sharped view of what constitutes the middle class. Sure there are even richer areas in la molina or I don't know where, it doesn't make Miraflores or San Isidro middle class. The middle class is not "everyone who is neither in the elite nor at the bottom", the middle class is a social group that consists of small managers and employers, high school teachers, middle army officers, civil servants, nurses...
Pueblo Libre is middle class, Miraflores is not.
It is evident for anyone who has been in Lima for more than 2 days, and who has been around a little bit in the city that what has been posted on this thread is absolutely not representative of the city. I never said your pictures were or were not valid. What I meant to say however is that they only represent a small, idealist and bourgeois side of Lima.
sebvill August 23rd, 2008, 05:17 PM I dont share your point of view but I respect it. Anyway everyone have different perspectives of things. I think Miraflores is mostly middle class, their are some areas that belong to the high class such as the levees and also areas that are poor like La Mar. But its mostly middle class, commercial, touristic and noisy.

well, as long as i know most of the pictures do represent lima. i mean i seen pics from lima center and miraflores and this are probably the most representatives districts in lima just because ,u dont see slums u think that they are not showing "the real lima" i mean every city has them......and of course lima is more than that ........such a beautiful city lima is.

It's very imprudent (more so if you are a foreign) to say things like this about a city.
I imagine that you don't have any study that can support your statement, lastly i can't find the point in your intervention on the thread, All Barcelona is like las ramblas? or is all New York like Manhattan?; what's wrong about show beauty places? it's necesary to emphasize in every thread that Lima (like any other city) has an ugly side? :ohno:
And about the pics that you will post XD what foreseeable! I'm pretty sure about what kind of pics they will be.

that picture is from the 90's, poor places may look ugly but not thaaat bad now, you can find more investments, public and private, at least you go to those houses that are on a top of a mountain, or something like that. And it´s really up to you if you want to believe that those places shown, belong to a 10% of Lima. I'm sure in your latin country things are the same, so if you wan't to criticize you should be doing that in your country, first. It's not he first time I see you doing that. Our economy is growing 10% nowadays and even China, who has been growing at a similar rhythm for 20 years, hasn't eradicated poverty at all. So please behave, and don't be so inmature, everyone knows about poverty in Latin America, it's not a secret, but in this forums obviously we're not going to show the worst places of our cities, would you do that your city? haha I don't think so.

Limeñito August 26th, 2008, 09:49 PM The Bay of Lima is one of my favorite places in the city.
I was in Magdalena last saturday; I was helping my sister with her homework abour the sea. Anyway, I looked the "Morro Solar" so far! I wanted to run to it. And the Marriott hotel! I almost could not see the building, but that stood out between the others. We shouldn't pay attention to those types to commentaries. That is, nobody will come to say to us how our city is or is not.
Keano August 26th, 2008, 10:24 PM Lima Lima Lima...hmm i've been there a couple of times now and i never really know what to think...the one thing i miss is the hustle and bustle of the downtown areas and yes the ocean is beautiful...but does this make the city enjoyable? My answer is no. Much of Miraflores is covered in Condo apartments guarded to the teeth and casinos, some of which look quite exclusive, but always soulless places. I ask myself, where are the amusements and entertainment? The cafe's are either plush hotspots for the wealthy working class or non-existent. There is no middle ground and finding entertainment in this city of 9 million is like looking for a needle in a haystack. After visiting the museums, looking for the best chifas in el centro and trapsing around Miraflores for the 50th time, i found little reason to stay and enjoy myself. It has a long way to go and i am not comfortable to enjoy the nightlife unless with a local and in a company cab, which gives me little motivation to do so. Lima has a lot of potential, but could never compete with cities i have been to around the world, unless there are huge, and i mean huge changes in making this city more enjoyable dammit. Even the people i know who live there don't know what to do with their free time.
I don't know much about Lima's past, but it has a lot to do for the future: Public transport is a must for this crippled city as to get around is one of the most frustrating experiences i've had in any city bar none. A lot more needs to be invested in the people, making the city more relaxed, as life seems hard here. A lot of focus has been put into security, and sometimes the city does feel safe, but i was almost mugged in broad daylight in Miraflores...for using my mobile phone! Internet cafes are cheap and plentiful, hostels also, but for a visitor there leaves a lot to be desired
FIDEL CASTRO August 27th, 2008, 12:12 AM I'm sure in your latin country things are the same, so if you wan't to criticize you should be doing that in your country, first. It's not he first time I see you doing that.
My Latin country?
Is not my first time doing what?
You are talking about the other guy, am I right?
FIDEL CASTRO August 27th, 2008, 12:21 AM Lima Lima Lima...hmm i've been there a couple of times now and i never really know what to think...the one thing i miss is the hustle and bustle of the downtown areas and yes the ocean is beautiful...but does this make the city enjoyable?
Man, don't say that. Some Peruvian is going to come and insult you for saying how ugly (you are right) Lima is. I am going to Buenos Aires for my next South American tour. 1992 was prbably not a good year for Latin America.
Wait, I have all the right to say what I feel or thnk of this city. If not, can you please ( mod or Peruvian kid) explain me why I can't say what I feel?
FIDEL CASTRO August 27th, 2008, 12:24 AM Thebuilding, but that stood out between the others. We shouldn't pay attention to those types to commentaries. That is, nobody will come to say to us how our city is or is not.
We have to say something. If you are not open to comments then why are you posting pics of Lima on an international forum?

I'm open to the opinions and comments; what happens? well, you offend and even you have given false data like that "5%". I don't expect only comments such as "what a beautiful city!", "wonderful city!", neither nothing of this.

When was the last time you came to Lima?
The problem is that this city is changing fast, I see it more dinamic every year, since 2006, and that's because investments are growing very fast, even in public transport, just as our economy.
I invite you to come in 2010 and you will find a quite different city, because everything you said is wright(at least for 2006 or before) but as I also told you, things are changing here

I did not mean to sound harsh on Lima, in fact i love Peru as a country and i really enjoy going back to visit. I was there in June this year and it does seem like a lot is changing. It is visible that the economy is growing, and i think now is the time to think about how to go about planning a 21st century Lima. I still think the city can be more people-friendly, it's hard to explain what i mean, put i guess it is more to do with infrastructure and public investment, i love the people!
Walker_RJ August 28th, 2008, 08:25 PM Sebvill, you post only photos of "first class" areas of the city. Could you post photos of some areas something like "medium class" or lower? I'm just curious.

I don't think so.
auror07pe August 28th, 2008, 09:13 PM Well don´t pay attention to Fidel Castro, we can imagine what he thinks about our country just looking at his name, he must be comunist, poor guy he is mad, jaja probably he critizes because right now our country is the star in the continent and all because of our neoliberal politics.
Well speaking more important facts, it´s true our country was very poor but we now have 16 years of economic expansion, and in the last two years we are going asiatic, growing more than 8% a year.
Keano, i respect your opinion but seriously is you think night life in Lima is not interesting, probably is because you are really boring, there a lots of places and options to go and have fun in our city and the most important they are always full of people, even the most expensive restaurants, where you have to make a reserve because if not you are not aloud to get in because is pack with people.

Sebvill, I'm imprest about Lima! I could swear all the pictures above were from high class areas! I know there are slums and poverty there in Lima, like any capital of a third world country, even in countries of the first world there is poverty, I think nobody here is ignorant, but what I want to propose is that the people show diferent parts and different aspects of the city, not only the best of the city. Of course, nobody like to see poverty, but showing the contrasts could be really interesting.

Awesome, man!!! Very interesting this other part of the city, even the poor and not so beautiful places are charming! Now I can see Lima as a good destination to enjoy! I love cities like this: beaches, modernity and variety! And with a great architecture.
eklips August 31st, 2008, 01:20 AM ^^ Lima is a very interesting place for anyone who is not afraid to be a little roughed up. A lot of tourists and peruvians (including many limenos) are put of by it, it is a place you need to understand if you want to enjoy it in my opinion.
This means you have to know a bit about what it is about before coming, it is not a tropical city with beaches, sun, and hot weather. It is not a "clean and modern" place. It is a rough, often dirty, conflictive, chaotic, fast paced place, full of contrasts and where the symbolical barriers between social classes is much more important than all the wired walls and security (watchiman as they call them ) you will see in the rich areas can symbolize.
A few renovated avenues and a construction boom won't change that. The city is indeed changing as all the limenos forumers on this thread like to point out, but evolution doesn't mean that there is a lack of reproduction, so be aware of that, or else you'll become like all of these tourists and expats who think everything revolves around them and would have liked Lima to be either Rio or Cuzco-bis.

FIDEL CASTRO September 1st, 2008, 04:34 AM One thing I really like about Lima is those cities on the desert. It gives Lima a unique style. It is just like Pakistan, and I love that. I'm not sure if those cities exist, but back when I was there, Lima was full of them south and noth. I remember San Cistobal, but that you find everywhere.
Here is an example. NOw, I REALLY LIKE THIS:

FIDEL CASTRO September 1st, 2008, 04:35 AM I mean Peru has extremely beautiful landscapes, but those deserts are Priceless.
eduardo90 September 1st, 2008, 06:50 AM I really do not get FIDEL CASTRO one minute he says the whole city looks terrible and the next he praises the landscapes? Keano Lima has a lot of nightlife in Barranco,Miraflores,City Centre and even now a lot of places are opening in the north cone. Also there are a lot of museums and parks to visit as well as many different places in the city centre. And believe when I tell you that you are the first foreigner I hear say that the nightlife is boring maybe you didn't know where to go but whenever friends come from other countries I take them out and they really enjoy the nightlife. But I guess everyone has their own opinion and I respect that. And eklips well Lima is certainly a big and populated city in what is a developing country so it is no Zurich. Also Rome wasn't built in a day and the country has started its growth only a few years ago so for very big results you will have to wait some time. Right now it is going through an incredible economic growth but it is rather ignorant to think a country can develop itself completely in 5 or even 10 years it needs to go through a process. Also I think you must be away from the country or blind not to see how many jobs are opening up each day thanks to private and public investments. The important thing is Lima and the country in general right now is on the right track, there can be many things improved in the system but at least changes are starting to take place. And yes the city is chaotic and you can see big social differences but what big city doesn’t have them? Have you ever been to New York out of Manhattan or to Rome, Paris, Madrid? When I came back from Europe I was rather disappointed thinking it would be a lot different than what I saw. Bad drivers(especially Rome), graffiti everywhere, a lot of people sleeping in the streets, garbage, A LOT of prostitutes at any time of the day near restaurants and stores. Also I was mugged and came back really disappointed. But my point is not European cities problems my point is that every city has bad and good things and if you do not want to see it than that is your problem.
