I saw it just today on Balita Amercia (i'm from California) and yes it looked awesome! Looks like they were filtering the water because it looked foggy in the tanks. But there seemed to be alot of fishes, rays, sharks, lionfish moving in schools and among coral/sand...when is the official opening?...for the aquarium that is....

Manila Ocean Park is an Oceanarium; a large saltwater aquarium for the display and observation of fish and other marine life.

Subic Ocean Adventure is a Marine Park; a park consisting of an area of sea (or sometimes a lake) sometimes protected for recreational use, but more often set aside to preserve a specific habitat and ensure the ecosystem is sustained for the organisms that exist there.

Hong Kong's Ocean Park does have a walkalator in its aquarium tunnel. but i think they open it occasionally. it wasn't working when i visited there. also, yung daanan ng tunnel dun was straight kaya may walkalator. in MOP's case, it seems hindi derecho ang daanan ng tunnel. i suppose mahirap mag-install ng walkalator kapag ganun.

^^ Most animal/marine parks go by the hours of daylight available, from sunrise to sunset. So as not to disrupt the animals' internal clock and get them out of synch. But since the Philippines have almost even cycles of sunrises and sunsets (give or take an hour), I would guess opening and closing times will be the same throughout of the year.

Lim opens Manila Ocean Park today
(http://www.mb.com.ph/MTNN20080229118225.html)

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony with other Manila City Hall officials when the Manila Ocean Park (MOP), the country’s first state-of-the-art marine habitat complex, opens today at the back of the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park in Manila.

After several postponements caused by delays in its construction, the MOP will officially open to the public tomorrow, Saturday, while today’s event is to showcase to the mayor the facilities of the marine park, said to be bigger than Singapore’s Sentosa Oceanarium.

Despite promotions that it would be a landmark development for the country’s tourism industry, the MOP has elicited some criticism, particularly from Manila Councilor Ernesto Rivera who is urging the city government of Manila to compel management of the Manila Ocean Park to divulge the measures they had taken to ensure the safety of the public, when the huge marine habitat complex opens to the public tomorrow. GMA, Lim inaugurate Manila Ocean Park
By: Itchie G. Cabayan
February 29, 2008 07:15 PM Friday

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim and Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) general manager Robert Dean Barbers will lead today’s inauguration of the Manila Ocean Park (MOP), which will showcase tropical fish and various forms of entertainment for children and adults. MOP vice-president for corporate affairs Tina Romualdez, vice-president for sales and marketing Armi Ruby Marie Cortes and marketing manager Tina Santos, said they have lined up activities for the day and even formed a committee that will welcome special guests, mostly ranking government officials. There will also be a concert featuring top local artists.

Among the salient features of the park is a glass tunnel where visitors may get to see the some 200 species of marine life.

Santos said the tunnel is a 25-meter walk that would provide visitors the chance to better appreciate the marine species.

Romualdez said the biggest aquarium houses a row of restaurants, a hotel with 100 bedrooms, two open water marine habitats and multi-purpose function facilities.

The MOP is the latest addition to the historical sites which serve as tourist attractions in Manila , since it is strategically located at the back of the Quirino Grandstand and a few meters away from the Rizal Park, added Romualdez.

Cortes said the project is a joint undertaking of Singaporean and Malaysian investors and aims to showcase as well as educate the public on the country’s flora and marine fauna.

Lim, who earlier toured the place, assured that aside from the security which will be provided by the MOP, Manila policemen will also be fielded in the vicinity to ensure the safety of the visitors who are expected to flock there.

The mayor expressed confidence that the MOP will boost the city government’s economy as its operations will generate much-needed revenues, jobs and entice more tourists to visit Manila , given the uniqueness of the world-class marine-themed park.

PGMA formally opens RP's first oceanarium
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2008 | PEOPLE, CULTURE & ARTS
http://www.gov.ph/news/?i=20244

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo formally inaugurated today the country's first state-of-the-art oceanarium or large marine aquarium that showcases the Philippines' rich diverse marine species.

The President cut the ceremonial ribbon signaling the soft opening of the much-awaited oceanarium of the Manila Ocean Park, along with Sen. Richard Gordon, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Philippine Tourism Authority General Manager Robert Dean Barbers and the foreign investors from the China Oceanic Group.

The President then toured the oceanarium, the main attraction of the P1.1-billion Manila Ocean Park located at the back of the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

While touring the oceanarium that features thousands of sharks, colorful tropical fishes of various species and invertebrates indigenous to the Philippines, she was briefed by Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong.

The Philippines forms 70 percent of the global epicenter of marine diversity known as the Coral Triangle.

The marine theme park is being built on a 1.2-hectare lot overlooking the Manila Bay. The project is expected to create some 1,830 new jobs as well as increase business activity in that part of Manila.

The Manila Ocean Park, when completed, will include the already finished oceanarium, a marine discovery park, promenade areas, a board walk and a themed and landscaped pavilion.

A joint undertaking of Singaporean, Malaysian, Chinese and Australian proponents led by China Oceanic Group, the Manila Ocean Park will be a major tourist destination in the country and Southeast Asia, Barbers said.

''It is a people's park along the bay for both local and foreign tourists to enjoy,'' Barbers added.

The theme park will feature a ''jungle trek, “seven seas,” and ''lost Atlantis,” he said.

forget about goin there, cant find parking space unless you want to park outside. Queues for buying ticket is sooooooo longgg. But it is really awesome. I mean entrance pa lang its like im not in the phils even if the entire thing is not 100% finished. The landscaping outside is superb din. Il try again sometime next week, weekdays siguro.
Cant wait to sip coffee on the balcony facing manila bay. Its goin to be more romantic more awesome than in moa

^^ I think there won't be enough space at MOP to accommodate a whale shark. In order for it to survive, it's habitat should be replicated, hence it will need an expansive though confined environment.

Very educational ito. Sana maintain nila ito talaga para hindi maluma at kasawaan ng mga taong puntahan. Gaano ba ang presyo ng pagpasok diyan sa oceanarium na ya?

^^^^^ They have that in Orlando Seaworld right? It is mostly warm in florida so I'm sure they can do that in Manila too. I don't see an area there in MOP that may indicate an orca can be exhibited, it's a very huge seacreature so it will be requiring a huge area or tank that is almost as big as an olympic size pool with atleast 15 feet deep water. But you're right, I think MOP is showcasing mostly Philippine sea creatures.

Yeah, I agree with you. Not necessarily about the lazy people, but it gives you the right amount of time you wanted to stay in one spot and it's easier to take pictures which most people does anyway when they enter an oceanareum like this, plus, it's healthier for people to walk around while having fun and relaxing.

Imagine the itinerary of a tourist or students going on a field trip- First stop is Fort Santiago, then proceed to MOP, next is Museong Pambata, Manila Zoo, SM Science Discovery Center, then finally Nayong Pilipino. I doubt nga lang if they can do that on a single day. :D

SeaWorld's tanks and pools are temperature controlled. They range from mid 40s (F) to about 60F. Have you ever tried sitting up front in Shamu's Stadium and have Shamu splash you with water? It's freakin' cold! Brrr....

Yep, I have been spashed on, it was my first time and didn't have a clue which I should have, nobody was trying to sit in those few rows down there, no wonder, d'oh on us..LOL

I didn't feel the diffence in water temperature though, probably because it was springtime and coming from the north where it was colder, I can't almost tell if the water was cold cuz 40 to 60 F is still warmer for me....

^^ Did you notice that the seats were labeled "Slash Zone?" I remember one time this lady was so mad that she got drenched that she complained to SeaWorld management saying that it was not nice for Shamu to get people wet during the performance. In my mind, I was like "your fault bitch, don't blame it on Shamu!" :colgate:

we were more focused on the show because we came in intime they already started some act so when we sat our warm asses down, came the swimming monster down our end doing her routine and splashed on us, that was aside from that part where the trainer commanded the whale to splash the crowd on purpose he he

im glad na meron na ring ganitong facility sa pinas. its better late than never ika nga. pero i was a bit disappointed kasi kunti lang ang klase ng isda at sea creatures, di tulad ng. say, HK Ocean Park. (Although, i must say that this, i.e. Manila's, is bigger than Singapore's sentosa or bangkok's siam paragon's facilities). May pating nga, ang liliit naman. mukhang marami pa ang kulang. tulad ng interactive presentations, or multimedia or video presentations for educational purposes. dami pang hindi tapos sa construction, marami pang makeshift cover. para feeling ko tuloy, short changed ako. sana, nag-open sila ng tapos na talaga, including souvenir shops, brochures and promotional materials. pati kasi front steps, di pa tapos. bakit ba ang pilipinas, ang hilig mag-open na di tapos?

I was there last Sunday. My 400 bucks was worth it. A friend of mine "gave" 4 of his fishes to the freshwater area (Agos). I was told that originally it was supposed to be an all marine aquarium but they added the freshwater area the last minute. Noticeably absent are the pawikans. I'll go there again once it is fully operational to check the overall park design.

I went to Ocean Park yesterday. Although the place and the attractions was just Ok (after all its just the 1st phase, so its likely to get much better), what disappointment me was the attitude of the people in the tour. People using flash photography, banging on the glass walls, making their own lines, allowing their children to lean on the glass etc. The negative results of the general public behavior showed - a lot of fishes already showed signs of stress, agitation, and a lot are already dead. Considering that they inspect and remove any dead fishes everyday, you can imagine the high mortality rate. I've talked to many of the park officials and they say it is very sad to see that the offenders are always Filipinos. :(

I just wish we Filipinos as a people become more disciplined and be more aware and respectful of nature.

Maybe the Oceanarium authority should invest more on personnel who will man the areas needed to be manned to enforce order and security for the area. A bigger sign in tagalog and english to remind the people. They should have a stricter law for violators to be escorted out of the premises without refund. Maybe, before all the visitors enter the exhibit, they should be given some briefing on the what certain actions of an individual would cause health risk on the creatures being exhibited. kung hindi pa talaga makaintindi ang mga gugong, sigawan talaga para mapahiya...

Well didn't the MOP have those warnings posted everywhere? What kind of theme park is the MOP if they don't have those posted warning "stickers" on the aquariums, walls, or at the hallways? If they do, then filipinos should learn how to read and obey the laws, and MOP staff/officials should help enforcing the warnings because they can't just stand up there and do nothing, heck its their job and workplace that are on the stake. MOP administration should also provide this proper trainings for all its staff and employees. Im surprised its happening in MOP, its disappointing. Tsk tsk tsk :ohno:

I'm still impressed on all these, it really turn out really good. It seems that the 400 bucks is really affordable just with the number of people in these pictures alone.

Tsk tsk tsk :ohno:

there are signs and rules are also explicitly stated in the map provided. Guides keep on saying "bnazwal flash photography" over the megaphone. but filipinos are just so dumb.

I remember when i visited Monteray Bay Aquarium and Mandalay Bay Shark and Reef in the US, flash photography is not prohibited... as far as i can recall, there are some portions that does not allow flash.

A chance for the Philippines to have a world class structure and entertainment to boot but once again mediocrity is apparent on this structure. Puede na mentality has once again prevailed. Just my opinion.

Blame the investors, the contractors, the local goverment and everyone else you can think of but the Oceanarium facade and some areas of the Oceanarium is still mediocre as far as Im concerned. My opinion and if you dont like it, tough!!!

It looks like the park was finished rushed. I don't fancy some of the pictures. But overall it's a pretty nice addition to Manila's tourist spots.

^^ i don't think this is really the "facade" of MOP.
it looks like they just made an "artwork" of the wall that's hiding the unfinished construction works inside...

if you could still remeber, yung panahon ni atienza, boardwalk lang ito diba? ang proposal dati ay hinde oceanarium, so pwede ba nila ibahin yung purpose ng mga pylons? sa tingin ko naman, mas mabigat ang oceanarium kaysa sa mall/hotel na dapat yun ang nakatayo dito...

In my opinion, the façade was not done as tasteful and as classy as it should be for a structure of this kind.

For the future mall and hotel component, they should do something that would give justice to the purpose of the structure, plain cladding would be fine, nothing to fancy, and nothing to colorful that would take the attention away from the sunset view and the scenery.

At utang na loob naman, please redo the oceanarium's façade before the mall and hotel opens. :mad2:

Kaya lang, under construction pa rin ang majority ng building, oceanarium lang ang matinong nabuksan and the rest, they are still coconut shells. Yung ibang bahagi lalo na iyong restaurant, evaporating A/C lang ang ginagamit. Ang fish spa, P100 additional pero maganda, overlooking Manila Bay, Manila Hotel, Luneta and Manila Floating Hotel and Restaurant.
