Yes, that is true, Burundi is quite overlooked. Even with me for example, I had never thought twice before about making a thread for this city as I did with Kigali and Kampala (older Kampala thread) in the past. I gather the city surprised many. :)


Very difficult to find good images of this city, honestly. Gaborone was difficult to find images not so long ago too. Bangui and Bujumbura pretty much difficult in my opinion.

Nice airport!

It has a different aspect of the cities of this part of Africa. It seems kind of cleaner and with a more "solid" architecture. The lake by its side makes Bujumbura looks more charming.

This is what the blogger Cédric Kalonji, from Kinshasa, wrote on his blog about taxis and public transportation in Bujumbura when he went there on a visit:
Le transport en commun marche a bujumbura. J’ai cru rêver en voyant qu’il y avait plein de bus, de taxis bus et de taxis. Tous les véhicules de transport doivent avoir la même couleur et le nombre limite des passagers est imprimé visiblement Pas question de dépasser le nombre maximum.

Il suffit de lever le doigt pour voir un taxi tout beau s’arrêter. J’en ai pris un et le conducteur m’a emmené jusqu'à destination tout seul. C’est vraiment différent des taxis de Kinshasa ou il faut se mettre jusqu'à 4 sur la banquette arrière et deux devant à coté du conducteur.

Cool ! J’en profite pleinement et je me demande comment faire pour emmener avec moi ces taxis à Kinshasa.

maybe 5% follows the religion, but there is a long history of trade in the south of the country with the Zanzibaris. Hence population who said to be "muslim" raise up to 30-35 %

The area of Bwiza, in Bujumbura, concentrates most of them.

This is a beautiful country, i hope more investments will come in the near future.

But in any case, It appears to be a beautiful city. Poor country doesn't mean rundown, not at all.

Burundi should be copying Rwanda so it can bring investments in the country. Place is magnificent but it does need a lot of foreign-direct investments in developing the countries road network and possibly rail infrastructure. Airport looks unique but its past its sell-by date these guys need to be ambitions to jump-start that dormant economy. By the way does anybody know of any building or infrastructure projects in the country??

I thought posting this earlier this year, but i was busy and then i totally forgot my bad


the lack of fire fighting equipments and the highly inflammable products stored in the market spread the fire in no time!
this tragic accident (Jan 2013) left thousands of burundians disorganised and many of them lost their goods and business and still cannot recover from the tragedy!
Now the city centre and the area around that market look like a ghost city, even the buses don't stop there anymore
A new market should be rebuilt on the outskirts of the town
