How about your city?
Let me start a list for NYC

SILVERLAKE February 23rd, 2008, 06:18 AM not too happy with some of the LA songs like Hole's and Weezer's but I suppose KROQ has to stay within the songs on the playlist. Here are the lyrics.
LYRICS FOR THE LA songs
10) Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your mind's elation
Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations
And if you want these kind of dreams
It's Californication
It's the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the East
At least it settles in the final location
It's understood that Hollywood
sells Californication
Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is that war your waging
[Chorus:]
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Californication
Marry me girl be my fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It's Californication
Space may be the final frontier
But it's made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderon's not far away
It's Californication
Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population everybody's been there
and
I don't mean on vacation
[Chorus]
Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl's guitar
They're just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldn't save the world
From Californication
Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest
There is no test
But this is what you're craving
[Chorus]
9) We've been on the run
Driving in the sun
Looking out for #1
California here we come
Right back where we started from
Hustlers grab your guns
Your shadow weighs a ton
Driving down the 101
California here we come
Right back where we started from
California!
Here we come!
On the stereo
Listen as we go
Nothing's gonna stop me now
California here we come
Right back where we started from
Pedal to the floor
Thinkin' of the roar
Gotta get us to the shore
California here we come
Right back where we started from
California!
Here we come!
8) I am still livin' with your ghost
Lonely and dreamin' of the west coast
I don't wanna be your downtime
I don't wanna be your stupid game
With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't wanna be the bad guy
I don't wanna do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just wanna see some palm trees
I will try and shake away this disease
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
I am still dreamin' of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away
I don't wanna be your good time
I don't wanna be your fallback crutch anymore
Walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and risin' in my own weird way
I don't wanna be the bad guy
I don't wanna do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just wanna feel some sunshine
I just wanna find some place to be alone
Yeah watch the world die
7) Crash and burn
All the stars explode tonight
How'd you get so desperate?
How'd you stay alive?
Help me please
Burn the sorrow from your eyes
Oh come on, be alive again
Don't lay down and die
Hey hey, you know what to do
Oh baby, drive away to Malibu
Get well soon
Please don't go any higher
How are you so burned when you're barely on fire?
Cry to the angels
I'm gonna rescue you
I'm gonna set you free tonight, baby
Pour over me
Hey hey, we're all watching you
Oh baby, fly away to Malibu
Cry to the angels
That swallow you
Go and part the sea, yeah, in Malibu
And the sun goes down
I watch you slip away
And the sun goes down
I walk into the waves
And the sun goes down
I watch you slip away
And I walk
And I knew love would tear you apart
Oh, and I knew the darkest secret of your heart
Hey hey, I'm gonna follow you
Oh baby, fly away, yeah, to Malibu
Oceans of angels
Oceans of stars
Down by the sea is where you drown your scars
I can't be near you
The light just radiates
I can't be near you
The light just radiates
6) Welcome to the jungle
We got fun 'n' games
We got everything you want
Honey we know the names
We are the people that can find
Whatever you may need
If you got the money honey
We got your disease
Chorus:
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun n,n,n,n,,n,n,,n,n,n,,n,n,,n knees, knees
I wanna watch you bleed
Welcome to the jungle
We take it day by day
If you want it you're gonna bleed
But it's the price you pay
And you're a very sexy girl
That's very hard to please
You can taste the bright lights
But you won't get them for free
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my serpentine
I, I wanna hear you scream
Welcome to the jungle
It gets worse here everyday
Ya learn ta live like an animal
In the jungle where we play
If you got a hunger for what you see
You'll take it eventually
You can have anything you want
But you better not take it from me
Chorus
And when you're high you never
Ever want to come down, so down, so down, so down YEAH!
You know where you are
You're in the jungle baby
You're gonna die
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shu n,n,n,,n,n,,n,n,n,,n,n,,n,n,,n knees, knees
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Feel my, my, my serpentine
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your shun n,n,n,n,,n,n,,n,n,,n,n,,n.n, knees, knees
In the jungle
Welcome to the jungle
Watch it bring you to your
It's gonna bring you down!
Ha!
5)
Where I come from isn't all that great
My automobile is a piece of crap
My fashion sense is a little whack
And my friends are just as screwy as me
I didn't go to boarding schools
Preppie girls never looked at me
Why should they?
I ain't nobody
Got nothing in my pocket
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rolling like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Look at all those movie stars
They're all so beautiful and clean
When the housemaids scrub the floors
They get the spaces in between
I wanna live a life like that
I wanna be just like a king
Take my picture by the pool
'cause I'm the next big thing
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rolling like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills
The truth is I don't stand a chance
It's something that you're born into
And I just don't belong
No I don't
I'm just a no-class beat down fool
And I will always be that way
I might as well enjoy my life
And watch the stars play
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rolling like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
4) I don't know if you can,
but can you get an owner for Ons,
that's O-N-S,Junior Market,
the address is 1934 East Aneheim,
all the windows are busted out,
and it's like a free-for-all in here
and uh the owner shouldat least come
down here and see if he can secure his business,
if he wants to...
April 26th, 1992,
there was a riot on the streets,
tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV,
while I was paticipatin' in some anarchy.
First spot we hit it was my liqour store.
I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford.
With red lights flashin' time to retire,
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire.
Next stop we hit it was the music shop,
It only took one brick to make that window drop.
Finally we got our own p.a.
Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today?
Hey!
(call fire, respond mobil station.
alamidos in Anahiem,
its uhh flamin up good.
10-4 Alamidos in Anaheim)
Never doin no time
When we returned to the pad to unload everything,
It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings.
So once again we filled the van until it was full,
since that day my livin' room's been more comfortable.
Cause everybody in the hood has had it up to here,
It's getting harder and harder and harder each and every year.
Some kids went in a store with thier mother,
I saw her when she came out she was gettin some pampers.
They said it was for the black man,
they said it was for the mexican,
and not for the white man.
But if you look at the streets it wasn't about Rodney King,
It's bout this fucked up situation and these fucked up police.
It's about coming up and staying on top
and screamin' 187 on a mother fuckin' cop.
It's not written on the paper it's on the wall.
National guard??!
Smoke from all around,
bo! bo! bo!
(units, units be advised there is an attempt 211 to arrest now at 938 temple,
938 temple... 30 subjects with bags.. tryin to get inside the cb's house)
(as long as I'm alive, I'mma live illegal)
Let it burn, wanna let it burn,
wanna let it burn, wanna wanna let it burn
(I'm feelin' Sad and Blue)
Riots on the streets of Miami,
oh, Riots on the streets of Chicago,
oh, on the streets of Long Beach,
mmm, and San Francisco (Boise Idaho),
Riots on the streets of Kansas City
(Salt Lake, Hunnington Beach, CA),
Tuscalusa Alabama (Arcada Compton Mischigan),
Cleveland Ohio,
Fountain Valley (Texas, Barstow - Let's do this every year),
Bear Mountain, Vista View (Twice a Year),
Eugene OR, Eureka CA (Let it burn, let it burn),
Hesperia (Oh, ya let it burn, wont'cha wont'cha let it burn),
Santa Barbara,Cuyamca, Nevada, (let it burn)
Phoenix Arizona,
San Diego, Lakewood Florida, (let it burn)
fuckin... 29 palms (wontcha let it burn)
any units assist 334 willow,
structure fire, and numerous subjects looting
10-15 to get rid of this looter..
10-4
3)
Somewhere high in the desert near a curtain of blue
St. Anne's skirts are billowing
But down here in the city of limelights
The fans of Santa Ana are withering
And you can't deny the living is easy
If you never look behind the scenery
It's Showtime for dry climes
And bedlam is dreaming of rain
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the MURDER wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning
This is not a test
of the emergency broadcast system
When Malibu fires and radio towers
Conspire to dance again
And I cannot believe the Media Mecca
They're only trying to peddle reality
Catch it on Prime Time
Story at nine
The whole world is going insane
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the MURDER wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is Burning
A placard reads "the end of days"
Jacaranda boughs are bending in the haze
More a question than a curse
How could hell be any worse
The flames are stunning
The cameras running
So take warning!
When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the MURDER wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning
2) Sometimes I feel
Like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry
I drive on her streets
'Cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills
'Cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds
And she kisses me windy
I never worry
Now that is a lie
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry
I don't ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all that way
Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away
1) she, had to leave
los angeles
she gets confused
flying over the dateline
her hands turn red
cause the days change at night
change in an instant
the days change at night
change in an instant
she had to leave
los angeles
she found it hard to say goodbye to her own best friend
she bought a clock on hollywood blvd the day she left
it felt sad, it felt sad
it felt saaaaaaad
she had to get out, get out
get out, get out
get out, get out
she gets confused
flying over the dateline
her hands turn red
cause the days change at night
change in an instant
the days change at night
change in an instant
the days change at night
change in an instant

Geaux Tigers February 24th, 2008, 06:18 AM Outside of LA, Seattle, or New York, there probably aren't too many cities that can claim at least 10 modern rock songs that mention their town.

SILVERLAKE February 24th, 2008, 11:02 AM how about picking the 10 most famous rock songs...;)
Yeah no doubt. THey took something that was kind of silly and made it kind of stupid.
Ideally it should be ten songs that people have actually heard, not just every obscure cut that happens to have a city in the title or happens to mention a city.
Every rock radio listener under the age of 40 knows most of these songs.
10) Californication Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP)
9) California Phantom Planet
8) Santa Monica Everclear
7) Malibu Hole
6) Welcome to the Jungle GnR
5) Beverly Hills Weezer
4) April 29, 1992 Sublime
3) Los Angeles is Burning Bad Religion
2) Under the Bridge RHCP
1) Los Angeles X
While there probably isn't a handful of music trivia fiends that know
"The Shadow of Seattle" by Marcy Playground
"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" by Nirvana (band)
"Seattle" by Perry Como
"Seattle" by Public Image Limited
"Seattle" by The Sass
"Emerald City" by United State of Electronica
"Emeraldas Desu" by Red Martian
"Sub Pop Rock City" by Soundgarden
"Inkwell" by Blue Scholars
"Seattle Was A Riot" by Anti-Flag
or
"Down On Mission Street" by Lloyd Cole
"Fake Tales Of San Francisco" by Arctic Monkeys
"Frisco Blues" by John Lee Hooker
"Frisco Town" by Memphis Minnie
"Golden Gate" by Al Jolson
"Golden Gate Bridge" by Rose Melberg
"The Golden Gate" by John Vanderslice
"Grace Cathedral Hill" by The Decemberists
"Grace Cathedral Park" by Red House Painters
"Hazy SF" by Six Organs of Admittance
"Hello, San Francisco" by Buddy Guy
Although I have heard of all most all of those bands/musicians, I don't think I have ever heard a single one of those songs on the radio. Let's not make things stupid.
Sounder February 24th, 2008, 11:28 PM A couple of more Seattle songs:
Spanish Castle Magic - Jimi Hendrix (Midway isn't Seattle proper, but close enough)
Jet City Woman - Queensryche
Somnifor February 25th, 2008, 02:20 AM Some Minneapolis songs:
Funkytown - Lipps Inc
9th and Hennepin - Tom Waits

Seeing double at the Triple Rock - NOFX
All along the watchtower - Bob Dylan (not about Minneapolis but inspired by the Witches' Hat tower where Dylan used to smoke dope in his Minnepolis folk scene days)

Regarding The Replacements: Isn't it "Here comes a Regular" about being an alcoholic that stays home all the time. How about "up in the skyway"? Now that's a minneapolis modern rock song!!!!
EastSider February 25th, 2008, 06:42 AM Nice variety of rock rock rock for rock city!:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Now that's a minneapolis modern rock song!!!!It is also a slice of life as seen through the CC Club, a local bar that is a neighborhood institution.
klamedia February 25th, 2008, 04:15 PM Once again since LA is the sum of its parts you will find many songs not referring to the city directly but about its surrounding cities or districts. I've actually done this before listing of songs of cities before and if I can remember New Orleans, New York, Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis and the LA area(Hollywood, Malibu, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Compton etc.) were the most popular. But most songs don't explicitly name the city so it's really difficult to get a true reading such as "Mac Arthur Park"(LA) or Sly Stone's "Love and Haight"(SF).
hudkina February 26th, 2008, 09:45 AM Since when is Eminem rock?
A lot of eminem's songs get played on 89x (Detroit's Alt Rock station). In fact back in the late 90's his first major single "My Name Is" was played on 89x long before it got played on any of the rap stations in the city.
Here are a few songs from eminem that I can remember hearing on 89x:
Ny Name Is
The Real Slim Shady
The Way I Am
Stan
Without Me
Cleanin' Out My Closet
Lose Yourself
Just Lose It
Like Toy Soldiers
Hell, he might even be referring to 89x in a line from "The Way I Am" when he refers to being in the "rotation at rock'n'roll stations".
Wu-Gambino February 27th, 2008, 03:23 AM Some how "The City is Mine" and "Where I'm From" both by Jay-Z were left off the NYC list.
Sam_Harmon February 28th, 2008, 08:28 PM Sinatra recorded not one but two tunes about Chicago.
After that, it would be silly for some snot-nosed rock and roll punk to even try.

Sinatra recorded at least two songs about New York (New York, New York; Manhattan Seranade) and LA (LA is My Lady; Hooray for Hollywood) as well. He liked to sing about cities.
