Jai February 23rd, 2008, 07:10 AM Indiabulls Sky (formerly known as Jupiter Mills Tower) -- Parel, Mumbai
Long awaited (by SSC India forumers, anyway) renderings for the promised residential tower at redevelopment of Jupiter Mills, Mumbai (Bombay) by developers Indiabulls Real Estate has finally been released by Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects:
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/3757/image1a.jpg
^ (Indiabulls Sky Tower on left, Elphinstone Mills Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=15925329) on right)
According to the architects:
Indiabulls Sky is a 75-story luxury residential tower in the heart of downtown Mumbai. To maximize views, the tower includes 50 stories of residential condominiums from floors 25-75. The building was designed to a LEED Platinum standard.
The tower will come literally right beside Indiabulls's Elphinstone Mills Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=15925329) (see link for pics and info.)
In one of India's biggest real estate deals, Indiabulls, India's financial services and real estate company, purchased the former Jupiter Mill and adjacent former Elphinstone Mill from India's National Textile Corporation in 2005, to redevelop them into high rise residential, commercial and retail properties.
The former textile mills are located in Mumbai's mill lands, a vast swath of 19th century industrial and textile factories strategically located in central Mumbai. These areas are to form the backbone of Mumbai's Central Business District and command some of the highest real estate prices in the world. This tower is the latest among a slew of skyscraper projects made public in this area of Mumbai.
While still in the final stages of design, the Indiabulls Sky is the latest project reflecting the new trend in Mumbai for organic-looking towers, based on ancient Indian Vaastu Shastra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaastu_Shastra) design.
The size of the tower is significant, likely pushing it to supertall heights. Comparing it to the much more conventionally proportioned 60-storey Elphinstone Mills Tower right next beside it, this 75-storey tower will likely be significantly taller, owing to its unconventional design and tall 'stalk'-like central core. If the rendering is anything to go by, this tower will likely be at least 300 meters tall.
With construction of the Elphinstone Mills tower and other commercial midrises at both plots already underway, we're likely to see the design finalized pretty soon, and if the turnaround time is anything like Indiabulls's other co-located projects, we can expect to see construction start within a years time.
When more news comes on this project, I'll be sure to keep you all updated
Cheers,
Jai
PS:
An even higher quality version of the rendering

davee08 February 23rd, 2008, 07:51 AM elphinstone mills tower is great but with jupiter well what could i say it looks terrible
xXFallenXx February 23rd, 2008, 07:53 AM It looks fucking terrible! What were they thinking? :bash:
I hope this abomination never gets built.
potipoti February 23rd, 2008, 08:34 AM what's that???? i really don't like it!!
NEWUSER February 23rd, 2008, 10:00 AM where is the rest of the building?!
Jai February 23rd, 2008, 10:08 AM C'mon guys, its not that bad. I'd personally take uniqueness over the architectural norm any day. The Elphinstone tower, while more normal-looking, and thus probably winning a lot more kudos because of it, isn't nearly as innovative a design. It's those buildings that push the boundaries, for good or for bad, that show real spirit of form.
Personally, I'm pleasantly surprised by the design. I'm a sucker for organic architecture anyhow, but if the facade and materials used will be anything like those used in its sister tower at Elphinstone, and they probably will be, this tower will be off the chain.
My only gripe is that blank wall of the core/stalk. I guess if its glassy, it'd look better than just blank material (though aluminum cladding could pull it off.) But, until the design is finalized and better renderings come out, we won't know for sure.
Eric Offereins February 23rd, 2008, 10:11 AM It's a crazy and daring design. I appreciate. :)
Anberlin February 23rd, 2008, 10:26 AM Looks disgusting. BAHAHAHAH. Looks unfinished.
909 February 23rd, 2008, 11:10 AM To be honest i think it looks great.
ZZ-II February 23rd, 2008, 11:19 AM that's what i call an great design :okay:, please build it!!
Nġgesh February 23rd, 2008, 11:33 AM Sorry, but it's damn ugly.
LeMoN-SK February 23rd, 2008, 01:00 PM Four letters: U, G, L, Y. The Elphinstone Mills Tower looks much much better...
Buyckske Ruben February 23rd, 2008, 01:02 PM Completely crazy! Its not a refined design, its more rather ponderous!
davee08 February 23rd, 2008, 01:38 PM never seen so much disapproval for a tower until this one came along but who knows if it does get approved and built it might look awesome after all but seems to me that india or in particular mumbai likes to have unique types of buildings
BoxIL February 23rd, 2008, 01:50 PM I like it.
Very unique design.
Phobos February 23rd, 2008, 04:45 PM The tower has a great design and it fits well with Elphinstone Mills Tower. The world needs more crazy towers like this one!
ZZ-II February 23rd, 2008, 05:40 PM The tower has a great design and it fits well with Elphinstone Mills Tower. The world needs more crazy towers like this one!
yes, you're absolutely right! the world need more such towers :)
indianpride February 23rd, 2008, 08:38 PM Looks FUGLY. Please don't build it...
mightygoose February 23rd, 2008, 08:55 PM hawg damn its beautiful, its one of those buildings that will look terrible in renders but actually in the flesh standing near the base will look so breathetaking.... i think construction pics for this will be fascinating...
malec February 23rd, 2008, 09:31 PM Love it!
Middle-Island February 23rd, 2008, 11:13 PM Looks incredibly futuristic. I can't believe the responses. It's as if no one's ever seen a the core of a building exposed before...EEK!

Mahratta February 24th, 2008, 12:43 AM Such polar responses, eh?
I'm the only one who's kinda non-polar
I appreciate that its a futuristic design but I'm a bit conservative I guess
I'm torn between being in love with it and disgusted by it
Good that its so tall though
ZZ-II February 24th, 2008, 12:44 AM uc pics
did you read the title? it is PROPOSED...that means there are still no UC pics available ^^
indianpride February 24th, 2008, 01:10 AM The 75fl tower isn't under construction yet (proposed). The 60 fl one on the right is under construction already.

bhargavsura February 24th, 2008, 01:21 AM That's nice.
I have one question.
Of the 75 stories of the tower, are all the 75 of em going to be aparmental stories or are some of alloted to parking lots??? just like the Antillia?
Jai February 24th, 2008, 01:24 AM ^^ indianpride, while you're correct that the 60 Elphinstone Mills tower is u/c, the construction picture above is actually the midrise I referred to also located at Jupiter Mills; a software/IT park designed by architect Hafeez Contractor. This midrise and the two skyscrapers will all be located next to each other.:

Dude, we have no idea. But the rendring does have a several-story podium. According to Indiabulls's plans, the development also includes retail/mall space, as well, though.

Daym!!
you gotta be kidding me!!!
I am not that excited by this structure... but over the top, it looks like an Australian Cricket ground, seriously!!! that was my first reaction!!!
But the other designs on the top of it are quite interesting!!!
indianpride February 24th, 2008, 01:49 AM I apologize for the confusion Jai. I had no idea that there was another project in that same area.
Jai February 24th, 2008, 02:16 AM no need for apology :)
The Auckland Kid February 24th, 2008, 03:26 AM It interesting....
Shortest Skyscraper February 25th, 2008, 04:25 AM This looks very modern-art(ish)... modern sculpture like. It looks great, it is futuristic, and it is tall... tall enough for the poor people in the poor neighborhoods to be able to see it daily... and remind them how money goes into architecture instead of helping resolve poverty.
Jai February 25th, 2008, 07:18 AM Oh please. :|
Skyscrapers built by the free market are there only to make money. Investment into India requires residential and office space in a city where there is very little free of each. It also creates jobs, cash and economic prosperity. This project in particular -- the redevelopment of mills defunct for decades -- will have former millworkers reap rewards in housing, employment and stipends.
This double standard people apply to skyscraper projects in India is incredibly callous and ignorant. Cognitive dissonance at the skyrocketing economic growth.
So please take that pseudo-sanctimonious bullcrap and internet forum crocodile tears and instead invest it in your volunteering or donations to your local homeless shelter. Meanwhile skyscraper and investment projects by investment firms like this one from Indiabulls here will create economic sustainability and jobs for Mumbai's poorest.

It looks great, it is futuristic, and it is tall... tall enough for the poor people in the poor neighborhoods to be able to see it daily... and remind them how money goes into architecture instead of helping resolve poverty.
I don't agree. Builders can't do nothing about people living in the areas (poor neighborhood) as you said.. It the choice of the people.
The pictures are indeed wonderful but I am just hoping that these buildings do come up in reality!
44p February 25th, 2008, 06:14 PM that building is UGLY! Don't build!!!

Jim856796 February 26th, 2008, 07:42 AM The desugn of this tower sucks. the toiwer may feature residential units on the 25th through 75th floors, but where are the first 24 floors. It needs to be revised so that these floors can be seen.

kronik February 28th, 2008, 09:12 AM so is it possible to change the title of the thread from Proposed to U/C?
By the way, the tower is very original. I am sure if it came up in New York or someplace, most of the nay-sayers would be sitting on the other side.
Jai March 1st, 2008, 03:26 AM Kronik,
The construction you see in the pics are from a midrise IT/Software park also being built on the former mill lands. This midrise isn't seen in the rendering of the skyscrapers, as it is by another architect and not technically part of the two resi/office tower project.
The 75-story tower is not u/c yet
never seen so much disapproval for a tower until this one came along but who knows if it does get approved and built it might look awesome after all but seems to me that india or in particular mumbai likes to have unique types of buildings
I think that's a very apt observation. For better or worse (I tend to think toward the former), Mumbai has some very unique looking buildings -- like Miami + Dubai mixed in with some spicy Indian masaala
Cheers,
Jai
Xelebes March 1st, 2008, 08:28 AM Looks like it is trying to emulate the design of a tree.
Tumbling Dice March 1st, 2008, 09:08 AM double post - sorry
Tumbling Dice March 1st, 2008, 09:08 AM I think it's ugly and way too top-heavy looking - bad use of space too - all those gaps could be floor-space, impracticle and ugly.
Ni3lS March 1st, 2008, 03:16 PM Absolutely don't like the left tower, Like the right tower :)
koolio March 1st, 2008, 08:27 PM One word: Ugly.
Next please!
Sukino March 2nd, 2008, 11:38 AM One word: Ugly.
Next please!
^^
bhargavsura March 3rd, 2008, 04:38 AM man. I think it might look ugly on paper. But I am really positive for this tower. When it comes up it will look good and I also think that it will go with the development of Bombay.
eyrie March 3rd, 2008, 11:21 AM This might look interesting once built and will possibly attract alot of tourists
zhiemi March 3rd, 2008, 12:22 PM By the way, the tower is very original. I am sure if it came up in New York or someplace, most of the nay-sayers would be sitting on the other side.
I echo that.
eyrie March 3rd, 2008, 12:36 PM ^^I doubt it look at how many people loathe the Toure Phare in Paris.Ugly is as ugly looks
eyrie March 3rd, 2008, 12:40 PM ^^p.s. and also the Calatrava tower proposed in New York-many hate that too, noone's against Mumbai, just "some" of the innovations
zhiemi March 3rd, 2008, 01:40 PM ^^
You have a non-biased approach :) This country vs. country bickering is happening too frequently, I don't want another one starting here. Sorry for bringing it up.
The design is very bold, would be great if it gets built.
eyrie March 3rd, 2008, 02:49 PM :DI like "ugly" buildings and I like this one a lot:Ddespite what I've said before I do hope this gets built
TdotTdot March 19th, 2008, 01:44 PM like its organic, unconventional design.
Luciano_XXII March 20th, 2008, 03:41 AM look like a brochette of balconies to me :D
shaggers_jr March 21st, 2008, 05:13 AM I love this building! It's incredible. Like something from Robotech. My only query would be - is it economically viable? With so much space dedicated to the core how can they ever hope to get their money back from sales?
Gutovsky March 21st, 2008, 05:19 AM So, it's basically a 50-story building on top of a 25-story tower? What a waste! Just to keep people further from street-level mundane day-to-day real life! And it's not beautiful!
Jai March 21st, 2008, 06:21 AM So, it's basically a 50-story building on top of a 25-story tower? What a waste! Just to keep people further from street-level mundane day-to-day real life! And it's not beautiful!

The tower on the right looks nice though.
Middle-Island March 24th, 2008, 11:59 PM This is unusual, but it isn't sloppy looking like Tour Phare. Not to mention-- hairy...*shudders again*
shaggers_jr March 25th, 2008, 06:31 AM I must say I'm shocked by the reaction to this building - this tower is so bold and sculptural. I can't wait to see it. What's with skyscraper nerds only wanting to see slim and pointy?
UD2 March 25th, 2008, 10:18 AM Depending on the materials they pick to use, this could turn out to be a desaister. Or it'll stun the world.
Jai May 10th, 2008, 11:44 PM Here's an update on the tower.
SSC India member Indiansunite called up both the developers and the architect and independantly confirmed from both of them that the tower is indeed coming up at Jupiter Mills -- not Elphinstone Mills as was speculated earlier. He also got confirmed from Indiabulls that the tower is not under construction right now.
I also called up Smith + Gill architects last week, spoke to one of the architects and despite my gushing, also managed to get confirmed from him that the tower is a very real proposal, but he directed me to the builders for more information. I will try to get a hold of them next work week.

All of the gray part you see in the render is the core, so it's basically just a huge ass core. :)
ZZ-II June 5th, 2008, 09:38 PM sure it is only the core, but they'll clad it.....looks like steel in the renders
HomesickAlienn June 6th, 2008, 04:19 PM All of the gray part you see in the render is the core, so it's basically just a huge ass core. :)

i dunno, it led to some weird feeling of a waste of space then..
but i think the design is somehow off the hook and very interesting indeed...
Krattle June 6th, 2008, 07:10 PM Wow, I have almost never seen such nearly unanimous negative response to what I think is a very original, and visually intriguing design. What do you guys want? Just a bunch of tasteless boxes that are built a dime-a-dozen? I do admit though, this tower doesn't look like an efficient use of space, but it still looks awesome.
Jai June 6th, 2008, 08:19 PM Thinking outside the 'box (http://www.skyscraperpicture.com/hongkong039.jpg)' scares some people.

I agree, what's with the negativity? This tower is amazing, totally futuristic. Who cares if it wastest space? Sometimes great design isn't about practicality.

oliver999 July 8th, 2008, 07:03 AM crative tower.
Ramses July 9th, 2008, 09:59 AM When even SSC members think it is ugly, you have a real unique tower. Mumbai should build this!
Are there any more detailed renderings?
Jai September 1st, 2008, 05:03 AM Unfortunately, not yet. The builders are currently building lowrise IT park and mall in the same complex that Jupiter Mills and Elphinstone towers will come up in. Once construction has completed, the profits will fund the building of the two towers.
------==--=--==------
Here's some more confirmation that both Elphinstone (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=24739126) and Jupiter Mills (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=586377) towers are in the pipeline. From this press release (pdf) (http://www.richardscarlberg.com/pdf/indiabulls.pdf):

The tower has been officially launched. It's official name is "Indiabulls Sky" and will be luxury residential use.
Quoted from the SSC India section (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1234):

Sweet. It's the Jupiter mills tower since the following article (http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/7181-launch-of-residential-units-at-one-indiabulls-centre.html) mentions 1 IB Centre:
Indiabulls Properties Investment Trust says that the residential units of One Indiabulls Centre will be put up for sale on Aug 23 under the brand name of “Indiabulls Sky”.
One Indiabulls Centre situated at 841 and 882 Balasheth Murudkar Marg in Mumbai, India, comprises a residential component of over 1.4 acres in land area.
Indiabulls Sky is expected to be a 65-storey building with managed private residences. Each unit residence will come with a large private terrace and a plunge pool overlooking the Arabian Sea.
It is close to Four Seasons Hotel, Mahalaxmi Course and the prestigious Willingdon Club.
65 should be the number of habitable floors. The tower itself will have 70+ floors.
Wey August 30th, 2009, 11:38 AM So, when the construction begins? Can we move it to other forum??

If you have the source, do let us know so they (IU, SC, or Sudheesh) can update the title.
BTW, great to see the update man. Sweet.
sixsigma1978 November 19th, 2010, 03:54 AM ^^ what he said!! Of course - that would mean this baby's off the Supertall list
shreyansh November 19th, 2010, 07:33 AM I dunno but one of the Indiabulls sky? was 275m in height. Let me see...

Effer January 5th, 2011, 01:14 AM Wait a minute, isn't its height 275m?
That's what I was thinking. The building in the rendering doesn't even look 300m.
India101 January 5th, 2011, 01:17 AM Sky is not over 300m. Sky Suites & Sky Forest maybe.
do let us know so they (IU, SC, or Sudheesh) can update the title.
They are mods in the Indian subforum not the supertall.

bhargavsura January 8th, 2011, 04:39 AM Yes boss and this is one of the coolest tower that's coming up.
SkyscraperJunky January 8th, 2011, 06:54 AM So nice that they kept all those trees. Hopefully they'll stay there.
Marathaman January 8th, 2011, 11:45 AM ^People love their trees, especially in hot Indian cities :D. Try to cut down trees and you'll see massive protests.

so true.
on the trees, I think the builder will be stupid to cut them down. They increase privacy as well.
Even the planned residential complexes in the suburbs have builders planting big trees now a days to add privacy (and also jack up price)
OldKool January 8th, 2011, 12:29 PM if you cut their trees they'll cut your redwood!!
Theta1 January 9th, 2011, 01:30 AM It's all well and good to have beautiful buildings etc, but we need to have trees and green as well, good landscaping only adds to the beauty and makes it stand out more.
SkyscraperJunky January 9th, 2011, 02:55 AM ^People love their trees, especially in hot Indian cities :D. Try to cut down trees and you'll see massive protests.
I'm thrilled to hear that. I can't stand to see massive, old trees chopped down to make way for anything. I love it when they are incorporated in the design :)
sixsigma1978 January 9th, 2011, 03:53 AM So many buildings under construction in that last pic! I count at least 7, maybe even more!
Estimated over 150+ skyscrapers and supertalls coming up in Mumbai!! If you include highrises - God knows how many more are sprouting up. Slums are being cleared - democratically i Might add :D - so Mumbai should be witnessing a sea change come 2018+

Says it is 748ft or 228 meters...No supertall. They just didn't mention it because the would mean this tread should have to dissapear in the supertalls section, like it has to do now...

Yeah, this thread should be moved to the skyscraper's section, IMO.
Mods, kindly do this.
wjfox March 9th, 2011, 08:17 PM ^ Done. :)

Please also edit the first page of this thread, since the plan of the towers have been changed. You may use the following image to reflect the needful changes. Thank You :).
Part of the "Sky" residential development by Indiabulls Real Estate in Parel, the Indiabulls Sky Forest project is coming up on what used to be Jupiter Mills. The project which has been designed by Seattle based Callison architects will consist of 2 towers sitting on top of an 11 storey public parking lot.

That is because the project was initially going to be a supertall, but it was redesigned to a skyscraper. The title was changed but the thread was never moved.
