These are my pics of Innsbruck, Austria's fifth largest city (120,000 inhabitants, 170,000 in Greater Ibk) and the capital of the province of Tyrol. I spent three days there in early January. Originally I wanted to attend the ski jumping event, which was cancelled due to wind. I still enjoyed my time there a lot.

About to land. A very spectacular approach indeed. The ski jumping hill at Berg Isel is visible, as is Tivoli stadium, Ibk's Euro venue.

The next day I took the tram to Berg Isel, the hill in the south of Innsbruck, where Andreas Hofer and his army heroically defeated the French. They were later beaten, but anyway... Today it is home to one of the most spectacular and best known ski jumping hills in the world. The trams resemble the Viennese ones a great deal:

I remember for weeks and weeks in my first German class having to repeat over and over again, "Wo wohnt Jenny? Jenny wohnt in Innsbruck. Wo wohnt Klaus..." It's nice to finally be able to picture a beautiful town with the name.

What you might not know though is that your German lessons most likely would not have helped you much in order to understand the people living in Innsbruck ;)

This reminds me a bit of Freiburg. An Old city center, the same trams, mountains all around with firs.

Ja, Innsbruck ist eine schöne Stadt! I love the beautiful Alps, city center, ski jump hill...but that Olympic Village has got to go or at least get a facelift! Beautiful indeed, thank you for the photo tour!

Schöne österreichische Stadt. Innsbruck is actually pretty famous here in Southern Brazil. Whenever someone of my family goes to Southern Germany or Austria, they go to Innsbruck. It's in the main tourist routes here, and it seems to be a nice place. My grandma went there in 2004 and she said wonderful things about the city and the people too.

Very pretty city actually, I like the pics!

Thats much cheaper than I thougt. oebb can't really compete with this price. even with a vorteilscard you pay more than 50 € for the round trip and it takes you nearly 5 houres. :ohno:

A bit above 50€ in comparision to 99€? No doubt I would choose the train.

How long does the flight take, from city center to city center, including check in, waiting for luggage etc?

I left home at 7.30 (could have left 1 hr later, too), deplaned at INN at 11.10, arrived at the hotel at 11.45.
And flying is part of the INN experience.

Hm, thats 4 hours 15 min. The train needs about 4 hours 50 min. Lets add another hour or one and a half hour for getting to the Westbahnhof and in Innsbruck from the station to the hotel.

I am actually surprised how small the time difference is actually. Given that the price is surprisingly to me also considerably better when I take the train, moreover considering the large environmental superiority of the train over the plane... my decission would be clear.
