Birmingham, UK
HEIGHT: 81m/265 feet
FLOORS: 23 floors
COMPLETION: 1965
ARCHITECT: ?
Not the prettiest of towers, but a landmark in Brum. Soon to be done up, with ideas being banded round for turning it into apartments, recaldding it and maybe even adding extra stories.

The Rotunda was built in the 1960's and opened in 1965. It stands 265ft (81m) tall with 23 floors overlooking the Bull Ring shopping Centre. It is one of Birmingham's most prominent and original landmarks and has even survived a bombing in 1974. In 1993 it survived the threat of demolition as part of a proposed facelift of the Bull Ring markets. The Rotunda was Grade II listed by English Heritage in August 2000 and has official landmark status.
Be kind to our baby.

The foreground is now built, St Martin's Square in the new Bullring which opened last Thursday. We're waiting for news on the Rotunda now.

Extra points for not being a box.
The Messiah September 9th, 2003, 06:13 PM It's not that good....actually it's pretty bad if you ask me ;) 5.0/10
renell September 9th, 2003, 09:32 PM 5.5/10 some boxes are better than this.
a recladding process and a couple of more stories would be better:)
de flatneuroot September 9th, 2003, 09:36 PM 7,5/10. Not bad at all.

HD August 25th, 2004, 10:00 PM could be great after recladding. now it's a 5
Jonesy55 August 25th, 2004, 11:04 PM Certainly not the greatest building in the world but Brum just wouldn't be the same without it. With a sympathetic reclad it should look pretty good with the BullRing.
Monkey August 26th, 2004, 12:37 AM Well it's certainly got character. And the height isn't bad for Birmingham.
It definitely needs a reclad though.
I'll give a generous 7.5.

birminghamculture July 4th, 2005, 02:19 PM This is my favourite tower in Birmingham mainly because of its shape. Its recently been cleaned up and a major refurb is due to get underway this year. The cladding will be changed to an all glass residential tower with a major lighting scheme on top. Rumours are a revolving resturant might still be added at the top.

Bachy Soletanche September 15th, 2005, 05:10 PM Too short, nothing special, but I'm glad they kept it. Could look stunning with mirred windows, I just wish I could afford to live there!
SoboleuS September 16th, 2005, 10:25 PM Nice cylindrical shape, but quite boring facade. 7/10

L8Hatter October 19th, 2006, 08:15 PM It looks good on the skyline, especially coming into Brum by train, so 7/10.
Benonie October 19th, 2006, 09:32 PM Remember folks this one's over 40 years old.
I think it looks great. I like it anyway: 8,5/10
After renovation it could be 9/10, but maybe it will look like any other ordinary 21th century round tower.
I hope it will be an original recladding.
Erebus555 October 24th, 2006, 05:33 PM I give this an 8 because of its story more than anything. You will far-stretched to find any tower in Britain with its usage, height and design at 40 years old. Everything in those days was square and boxy. The reclad will look excellent though. 7/10
Stagger Lee October 24th, 2006, 11:12 PM 6.5 with a new mirred facade, but too small with such a shape.

Its run down and dirty. But hats off it is 40 years old and has survived a bombing and demolision.
Heres to another 40 years.
Stefan88 June 8th, 2007, 07:14 PM I like it alot. To say it's 40 years old it's an interesting design compared to most of the buildings that were built at that time. The new reclad looks brilliant aswell. 9/10.
The only thing that drags it down is the base but there changing that aswell aren't they?
