I noticed that most provincial capitol buildings and city hall in the country are similar in design and structure. The surigao del norte capitol has a replica in saranggani which is much bigger though.
That peace marker in front of our city hall is not so pansinin kasi masyadong maliit. The city should have put a landmark or something that would complement the city hall. I remember that a tree/christmas tree originally stood in that center island and every christmas it was adorned with christmas lights.

General Luna, Siargao Island (September 19) -- Surfers and visitors of the 14th Siargao International Surfing Cup need not to go far in order to shop for food, souvenirs and things to bring home to their respective homes.
The Surigao del Norte Provincial Cooperative Office headed by its OIC chief Gemma Entendez organized a mini-tiangge here in this town showcasing the native products of the province.
Agricultural products from Gigaquit – the Gigaquit Rhum (Pauroy), popular delicacy called ampao (pop rice) in Placer, banana and cassava chips from the Rural Improvement Club, novelty and souvenir items crafted by the Provincial Jail Inmates, dried squid, polvoron, tikog banig and placemats are just some of the products currently displayed.
Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers believes that having this kind of activity is an opportunity to promote the investments and livelihood opportunities of the province.
The mini-tiangge opened last September 14 and will end on September 26, 2008. (PIA-Surigao del Norte) [top]

General Luna, Siargao Island (September 19) -- Preparations for the 14th Siargao International Surfing Cup is set to be finalized this evening as delegates from other countries started to arrive here to compete and vie for the championship prize amounting to US$20,000.
As of press time, 48 surfers are set to participate in this annual event that was given more impetus with the incumbency of former Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers of the province of Surigao del Norte.
An official competitor's briefing is set to be conducted this evening to inform the participants of the mechanics of the competition.
Tomorrow, Saturday (September 20), Opening Ceremonies will be conducted at Cloud 9 – the contest venue at 10:00 in the morning. Afterwhich, a welcome lunch for guests and international competitors will be hosted by the provincial government of Surigao del Norte.
Aside from the surfing competition, the 2008 Search for Binibining General Luna will be conducted on Sunday (Sept. 21) in time with the celebration of the annual Tikyabang Festival of this town.
Moreover, the annual Gov. Robert Ace Barbers Open Chess Tournament will be also featured as one of the highlights of the activity, as well as the inter-school Modern Dance (Hip-Hop) competition.
The week-long international surfing competition will end on Friday (September 26) in a reception and farewell dinner that will also showcase the Awarding Ceremonies.
It can be recalled that last year, Billabong became the main presentor of this event. During this year, Gov. Barbers signed a memorandum of partnership for three years with the Australian-based firm. From a local surfing event in 1995, the surfing cup has evolved into an internationally competed event now known as the "Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational Surfing Cup". (PIA-Caraga) [top]

c0kelitr0 September 22nd, 2008, 04:56 AM i think kaya hindi napapasok ng gaisano ang surigao kasi the local government is protective of its local investors. if only gaisano was able to put up even a small supermarket during the nickel mining boom, they'd be accepted as LOCAL so pwedeng pwede mag expand whenever they like it.

regjeex September 22nd, 2008, 10:52 AM Filipino surfer listed among world top surfers
by Robert E. Roperos
General Luna, Siargao Island (September 21) -- Local surfer from this town is leveled to top surfers in the world.
Carlito Nogalo, a local resident of this town, is among the four surfers presented by Billabong International – Southeast Asia to local media in a press conference conducted on Saturday (Sept. 20) at Cabuntog Resort here in connection with the 14th-year staging of Siargao International Surfing Competition from September 20-26, 2008 at Cloud 9, in this town.
When asked what's his feeling being considered and leveled to top tube riders/surfers in the world, Nogalo said "it's a great feeling to be with the three top surfers" referring to Wade Goodall of Australia who is the defending champion, Dylan Longbottom (Australia) and Jayson Shibata (Hawaii).
Nogalo also said being the best surfer requires proper discipline and perseverance. "In order to excel, you must be physically and mentally prepared", he said.
Meanwhile, Australian's Dylan Longbottom is a famed free-surfer and super-shaper in his own right. He has been living within foam-blowing distance to the snapper takeoff spot for four years now and has his sleds under the feet of a bunch of local guys' boards.
Hawaii's Jayson Shibata, on the other hand, is a third-timer in the Siargao International Surfing competition. In his previous interviews, he said he was fascinated with the waves of Siargao that made him participate in this annual surfing event in Siargao without having a second thought.
With Longbottom and Shibata's presence in the Siargao Surfing Cup this year plus the expertise of our very own Nogalo, they are considered a threat and close-rival of defending Champion Goodall, also a fellow Australian.
A total of 48 local and foreign surfers compete in this week-long tourney considered as the most prestigious international surfing competition in the country.
Aside from honor and fame, this year's champion will be going home with a cash prize of US$20,000. (PIA-13) [top]

The story of the wife is like a fairy tale, rag to riches soap opera. she used to be a labandera of a local lawyer in her younger years. But then she found her prince charming. They got married in Manila and all the guest coming from Surigao were planed in and billeted at shangrila mandaluyong. the UP Madrigal singers sang in their wedding and the San Miguel Philarmonic orchestra played at their reception party.

The City of Surigao was pronounced, once again, as a regional winner in the Search for the Presidential Awards for Child-Friendly City 2008, after having rendered exceptional services to advance the interests of the children. This was disclosed by the search’s regional awards committee to Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra on Tuesday last week (September 23).
The city’s entry was submitted directly to the Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) in Butuan City. The RSCWC evaluated and validated the entry, and monitored the various programs and activities implemented by the city government in the advancement of its end goal of attaining total development of its people, particularly the children.
The formal awarding of prizes will be held in Cagayan de Oro City but the final date is yet to be scheduled as of press time.

Surigao City was adjudged second runner-up in the Local Government Unit category in the National Literacy Awards 2008 held on September 19 at Baguio City. The Surigao City team proudly received the award with Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra.
The team was composed by staff of the Department of Education Surigao City Division, City Parole and Probation Officer Alicia B. Espejon and some barangay officials.
As one of the development agendas formulated by Mayor Casurra’s administration, the mayor is determined to lessen up, if not eradicate, illiteracy in the city by providing the indigenous peoples and minorities, out-of-school youths and adults, parolees and probationers, and jail inmates a chance to learn and be functionally literate. Through literacy programs, they would be able to read to their children, fill out a job application or follow directions on a medicine bottle, or be useful and productive in the society they belong to.
Literacy promotion is a continuous program of Mayor Casurra complementing the city’s development direction to edify and empower its citizenry.
The National Literacy Awards was created by the Literacy Coordinating Council and the Department of Education in support of the national government's commitment to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing adult illiteracy by half in 2015 and improving the quality of life of the Filipinos.
The National Literacy Awards has two categories, namely, the Outstanding Literacy Program Award and the Outstanding Local Government Unit Award.
The Outstanding Literacy Program Award is given to a literacy program being implemented by a non-government or civic organization and academic institution, which has evident positive impact on the learners and the community. The program should have contributed to the transformation of learners into productive and more responsible community members.
The Local Government Unit Award is given to one highly urbanized city, component city, municipal level Class A and Class B, which has developed policies, programs and projects advantageous to literacy development and which has made a constructive impact to the underprivileged of society and which affected the full functioning of democracy and the growth of the economy as a whole.

in some sense your right @dangas. but i will love siargao to be what it is today than boracay.
