in the late 90s around 1998-1999, gaisano hired researchers and market analysts to do initial viability studies of cities in mindanao for their expansion plans. among other places, those visited are pagadian, butuan, surigao, tagum.

what i learned from that activity is their minimum requirement for mall development is a lot area of at least 5 has. and centrally located or accessible and a provincial population (catchment area) of at least 500 thou.

the butuan project was validated and surigao did not qualify back then on the population side with only 120 thou people and the SdNs total is less than 500thou. moreover the cost of real estate here, particularly along the national highway near the terminal was very high. cabadbaran has a little more than 50thou population if i am not mistaken so i really wondered how gaisano decided on that project. :):) cabadbaran also does not have any influence on population movement coming from our province except as "bladder stop" on the way to butuan. unlike surigao which really provide the services for the whole province, portions of southern leyte, surigao sur and even their people from agusan norte who prefer using our ports than that of nasipit.

one technique of coming up with an indicative view of a city's or a town's local economic dynamics and purchasing power is by observing the daily activity in the public market. ours here is definitely more vibrant than that of cabadbaran. :)

actually there is nothing we can do if they indeed decide to locate there. i was just pointing out some of the basics in investment decision-making with regards to that type of activity hence i am surprised to learn about that decision -if indeed it was already made or at least who made the announcement. :)

incentives?? that comprise the tip of the investment decision pyramid constituting about 10%. the large chunk on the base comprising about 35%-40% is still economic fundamentals. incentives only play a factor in investment decision once all other factors have been satisfied. in other words, it is just icing on the cake, hence we need to have the cake first. :)

i believe the city has its own incentives code per their website info. :)

If i remember right, they will start their Mla-Sur direct flight on June 17. good for us consumers, this would mean competition with airphilex, whihc in tunr means lower fare.:)

this is exactly what i was pointing out earlier, the fundamentals simply are not sound given the present market base and influence area of cabadbaran.

guys.....according to my source...it is metrobank who will rent the ground floor of david sallon for their 2nd branch but sad to say the deal didnt come up beacuse of rent matters..........the owner of david salon wants to have a rent of 70 thou...but the metro bank wants to have it 50 thousand only.....

this means that the business in surigao is now growing...cant wait to see the 2nd branch of metro bank here in surigao.....

the gasoline station near sec is now 75 percent finish...and i dont think that it ie the rumors jetti coz the design is different from what we known of jetti.....

You are most welcome to browse Pagadian thread.Gaisano is only one of the landmark shopping centres.Coming up is the city owned C3 Mall, occupying an entire downtown block.There's two other big shopping centres - Peoples Plaza and BE Mall.By the way, population already surpassed 160,000 and is classified as semi-urbanized.Good thing is main streets are really wide but really getting congested with all sorts of vehicles dominated by tricycles.Yes, it has lost that small town ambiance which I think Surigao still has!

i would suggest that the main entrance of tavern hotel it would be nice if it will be facing boulevard............pangit lang kasi tingnan...for those guest na dont have any idea yet kung saan ang location ng hotel....imagine mo naman almost katabi mo mga funeral homes.,..hindi lang isa kund tatlo pa.....its a kind of untidy thing...unhealthy pa.......

well nice if they do have balcony in the new phase building of tavern.........plus factor din yon sa kanila and with the swimming pool on the roof top...ganda tingin specially when the sun comes out.....they should maximize their new building to attract more guest...

I must agree the relocation of entrance facing boulivard side abd they should totally closed the Borromeo side because of funeral homes situated in that area so horrific to stay.........I hope somebody could take pictures.

I doubt this as the owner of family spa is not that well off. just look at the amenities inside their spa. di kun aja ako magdaot pero bagan di gajud kaya mag open nan coffee shop. Sanan an inkalingawan inin tag ija nan spa is mga bikini-bikini open cum fashion shows.:)

At least 16,366 job openings for overseas workers is set in Surigao City mega job’s fair in the first week of next month.

Ms. Annette Lovete, head programs and services of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) for Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga region) said these foreign job openings are open to all professionals, skilled workers and domestic helpers.

This one-day mega job’s fair is slated on June 7, this year at Surigao del Norte Provincial Gymnasium, in Surigao City.

She said several accredited recruitment agencies of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) are participating from as far as Cebu, Manila, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and this region’s capital city, to conduct direct hiring to those interested applicants who wanted to work abroad.

“This is a big opportunity to foreign job seekers in Caraga region and even in other neighboring region’s in Mindanao,” said Ms. Lovete.

She said this mega jobs fair is one of the major activity in this year’s celebration of the “Migrant Workers Day-Araw ng Pasasalamat”, with the theme: “OFW’s: Tagumpay sa Hamon ng Panahon, Kaagapay sa Pagsulong”. The celebration is participated by all concerned government agencies led by OWWA Regional Director Marieta Arcena Lumawag.

This big celebration pays tribute to the courage, patriotism, struggles and economic contributions of migrant workers in many parts of the globe.

The Surigao City celebration will be participated by more than 3,000 OFW’s, along with their respective families coming from various provinces, cities and municipalities in the Caraga region, she said.

During the one-day activity, a livelihood and trade fair seminar will also be conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Science and Technology (DoST) and TESDA.

In that one-day celebration, a medical and dental mission will also be conducted by the government and private doctors, nurses, midwives and other medical workers coming from various government and private entities spearheaded by the Department of Health (DoH), Philippine Charity Sweptakes Office (PCSO), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).

Awarding of Outstanding OFC’s and OFW’s and cash awards from Globe Communication and cultural presentation will also take place during the celebration, added Ms. Lovete.

The OWWA-Regional Welfare Office (RWO) in partnership with the OFW Family Circles in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands will spearhead this year’s celebration in Surigao City, she further added. (PNA)

i dont really agree that the boulevard is a dangerous place. i've spent several evenings there along those benches with my family whenever the brownouts then was frequent. i have also consumed several san mig lights in various points along the boulevard and i would say it is still fairly safe. i sometimes even have coffee during evenings there at mr. donut.

as for drinking in bars, it all depends on how you carry yourself and select which bar you go to. tavern is along the boulevard also and several others. but if you chose to drink along those transient vendors with tables illegally put up during evenings then you maybe inviting disaster in the first place given the kind of crowd that would patronize those. :) these people are not paying taxes to the city and are making business illegally, contributing to garbage build-up in that area so why should i patronize them.

this maybe an isolated case of snatching. it is not rampant in the area otherwise we locals should have heard about it more often. besides, the boulevard is facing northeast there is no sunset there. you can only view it along the shores of ipil and mabua. :)

snatching is part of urban life, so it is incumbent upon us to protect our valuables whenever we got out in public.

do you mean sa cebu-siargao na flight bulldog? actually same pud ako observation but i think siargao caters more on the local tourist in mindanao area thus mag via surigao city sila. before, usa lang ang roro for siargao but now, last friday when i was on my way at the PPA Badminton Court, nakita nako duha na ka roro of Montinegro Shipping Lines ahg diha sa pier. with that, maybe local tourist prefer roro than plane kay mas cheaper ug madaya pa nila ilang car.

I agree, City Blvd is not inviting at all. not tourist friendly and everything. sayang ang view sa tavern ug ang laing resto in that area. sayang gajud imbis amo ra ini ang part sa city na 6 lanes ang dayan (3 lanes in both directions) pero it was a total disappoint. sorry!

i dont really agree that the boulevard is a dangerous place. i've spent several evenings there along those benches with my family whenever the brownouts then was frequent. i have also consumed several san mig lights in various points along the boulevard and i would say it is still fairly safe. i sometimes even have coffee during evenings there at mr. donut.

as for drinking in bars, it all depends on how you carry yourself and select which bar you go to. tavern is along the boulevard also and several others. but if you chose to drink along those transient vendors with tables illegally put up during evenings then you maybe inviting disaster in the first place given the kind of crowd that would patronize those. :) these people are not paying taxes to the city and are making business illegally, contributing to garbage build-up in that area so why should i patronize them.



this maybe an isolated case of snatching. it is not rampant in the area otherwise we locals should have heard about it more often. besides, the boulevard is facing northeast there is no sunset there. you can only view it along the shores of ipil and mabua. :)

snatching is part of urban life, so it is incumbent upon us to protect our valuables whenever we got out in public.

as for safety, I agree nga safe ang blvd but the way it's being developed, it doesn't turn out to be as expected.

guyz, renovation of Jollibee Surigao is ongoing man baja. based sa ako nakita, kini siguro ang pinakanindot nga renovation nga ila nahimo so far. nag adopt na ba ang Jollibee ug Coffeeshop type? kay ang ila color kuman kay combination of dark brwn and golden yellow colors. i dont know if ther'll be changes in the second floor area. let's just wait and see.

so safety wise its not dangerous after all. :):) aesthetics is more wanting, i agree it is not comparable to dumaguete's boulevard or that of embarcadero. the problem is the mixed use development of our boulevard unlike those aforementioned where it is solely for tourism and commercial development.

i will not probably see the light of day for any city government administration who can drive those residents in the area without facing any lawsuits. :D these are people with legal claims, foreshore lease and so on. the city has not done anything even on that non-performing lease of SRBC much less collected anything from it. :D that is the biggest and real squatter for now. :nuts:

another factor contaminating the area is the use of it for docking purposes. this i believe the city can handle better if they will have the resolve to clear it. but where to transfer these motorized boats using it would mean another problem to solve first. i'll wait and see for now what the new city admin. will do.

Migrant Workers Day kicks off in Surigao City
at Monday, June 7, 2010

The "Araw ng Pasasalamat 2010" or the Migrant Workers Day officially opens in Surigao City today, June 7, 2010.

Thousands of OFWs along with their families throughout the region converged in the newly refurbished provincial gymnasium this morning to celebrate this annual gathering.

Organized by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) – Caraga region, the event carries the theme "OFWs: Tagumpay sa Hamon ng Panahon, Kaagapay sa Pagsulong."

OWWA Caraga Director Dr. Marieta Lumawag said that the activity will showcase livelihood trade fair in close coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), cultural presentation featuring "Sajaw Surigao" Performing Arts, medical-dental mission with the support from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), and some volunteer doctors from the City Health Office and the Prov’l Health Office.

Lumawag also announced that Globe Communications and Banco de Oro (BDO) are their partners in the celebration. "Merong raffle draw ang Globe at cell phones na ipamimigay. Partner po natin yung Globe sa celebration at saka BDO. BDO is also set to give cash awards."

Lumawag also said that in recognition of their hard work and sacrifices abroad, there will be an awarding of outstanding OFWs. One award each for Outstanding Land-Based and Sea-Based OFWs. Recognition will also be given to the most active OFW Family Circle in the region.

Meanwhile, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Caraga Coordinator Marieta Bellotindos confirmed that at least 19,973 job openings for overseas workers are also available in the event.

"As of today, I have with me 19,973 job orders from the 12 agencies invited. Jobs ranged from managerial, skilled (welders), domestic helpers and medical," said Bellotindos.

lage bai, naamaze gani ko kay just for this year bagan hamok nasad jud an mga resorts muopen diha but mostly sa general luna and socorro. On the other side the municipality if pilar and sta. monica is also now also catching the market because of the international gamefishing and surfing..Im just waiting for class AAA resorts to open jud.

That 8 km long beachline of general luna from pansukian resort up to sagana resort the will the home of resorts that cater to foreign to local tourist..:cheers:

the location does not match for a funeral parlor...............may ta kung mahitabo ni...ni tapad nalang tana pud xa sa 3 ka funeral homes didto dapit sa borromeo....atleast pwede pa xa matawag na the funeral street...hahahaha.........government should also be aware and involve of putting establishment into a proper place/location

it is nothing to be excited about. although they will utilize a fairly large area of about 30m x 50m, they only plan to put up a 2-storey building. since they are only on lease, it will be a low-cost construction type i suppose. but at least it would upgrade the looks of that area from the sidewalk stalls occupying it back then. :)

oh really sir? hmmmmm maybe the next administration will give more importance of Bonok-Bonok festival. This is the best festival in the region in my opinion so it deserve a grand preparations. raising the prizes is a great factor to convince other participants and nearby municipalities to participate.
