Update! For the second time around SNNHS got the first place, municipality of Del Carmen-second,Cagasan Elementary School of Surigao City got the 3rd Place. These were the winners for the BONOK BONOK 2010 held at the PROVINCIAL GRANDSTAND. The whole duration of the festival went wet with the rain. But still the activity went successful. The only mistake i saw was there were no platform or stage for the presentation..

I'm happy to say that I spent the last two weeks of August in the very beautiful (and humid) Surigao City. The flight from Manila was just beautiful across the islands. I really enjoyed riding the tricycles even though I had trouble fitting in them. But I really enjoyed my stay in the city.

https://p5.secure.hostingprod.com/@darthvaderhelmets.com/ssl/SurigaotrafficAug2010.jpg

And I was really happy to find when I got back that Surigao City is AT LAST at high resolution on Google Earth, even though one still cannot get accurate street locations via Google Earth search, but that's ok because at least one can find one's own street and house now from the satellite imagery alone, apart from the area covered by clouds. Prior to this high resolution Surigao City appeared on Google Earth just as a blurred city without street resolution. So now it is finally on the map and great to see.

Here is a composite I made of the City at the same magnification as the only really reasonable map available online. Too bad the airport doesn't show up.

https://p5.secure.hostingprod.com/@darthvaderhelmets.com/ssl/SurigaoCityplusMapTJD.jpg

Hopefully now we can work on a more accurate and complete map of the city? Google Earth has made it so easy to make a map now. Let's get to it!

Actually it is funny because I always rode in the front, otherwise I think the tricycle would have tipped over since I weigh 95 kilos hehe. When I took these photos I pointed the camera out the right side and behind me without even looking at the screen to see what I was composing, but its funny you thought I was always stuck in the back. :) You can tell from the tricycle driver photo where I was sitting. But thanks for the kind advice.

surfing zen in siargao..

It’s when jumping off cliffs or being drenched by a downpour at sea that you become at peace with yourself.

Quick impressions of Siargao from the ferry: It’s small and still provincial. The dock is like all the other provincial harbors I’ve seen—busy and noisy, big bundles and cargoes being transported to or from all kinds of floating vessels. Off to one stretch of the coastline, as our ferry got ready to dock, coconut trees swayed while wiry brown kids enjoyed diving into the dock’s deep waters. As we disembarked, I observed that my fellow passengers included backpacking foreigners toting longboards. What surprised me, though, was that many of the surfers on the boat with us were travelling alone. Since then, I learned that surfing is a solitary sport. For dedicated surfers, it’s a case of me against the waves— so it doesn’t matter if they’re alone or with a group.

Siargao is the Philippines’ surfing capital. From its popularity as a surfing destination, I thought it would be bigger and busier. But it has still retained its provincial soul -- perhaps because it’s a surfers’ haven and the group’s distinctly bohemian vibe has permeated the place. Nevertheless, locals complain that the town isn’t what it was ten years ago, presumably when it was harder to reach and few had discovered its attractions.

However, lack of easy access has never deterred dedicated surfers, and Siargao is proof of this. For one thing, traveling around the Philippines is not easy. Going around the islands requires vast amounts of patience, level-headedness, and cool that would put a Zen master to shame. First, one has to fly into Manila and contend with the chaos in the airport. Once out of the airport, you have to go through horrible traffic, bad infrastructure, and confusing road rules to get to your hotel (it’s doubtful that you’ll be able to get a connecting flight to Surigao on the same day). And then there’s the heat, and so many other inconveniences. By the time you get to Surigao del Norte, it’s a wonder you have any strength left to carry your surfboard, let alone your luggage. Yet, upon reaching Surigao del Norte, Siargao town is still two hours away by ferry.

In Siargao, accommodations can range from the most basic—boarding houses with bed and an electric fan—to very lavish. Yet for most surfer visitors, where you lay your head at night matters less than the waves.

Although I love swimming in the ocean, I’m not a surfer, so I can’t relate much to the enthusiasm surfers have for riding the waves. I must admit, though, that the first view of the famous surf break Cloud 9 impressed me. Even how the area itself got its name has attained some sort of mythic status. Common lore has it that Cloud 9 was named by famous American photographer John S. Callahan who first photographed the waves while munching on a local candy bar named -- you guessed it -- “Cloud 9.” Various permutations of the story exist and, whether you believe it or not, the name stuck and one of the most famous surfing sites in the world found itself named after a candy bar. Stranger things have happened.

We got to Cloud 9 late in the afternoon. It wasn’t surfing season so the waves weren’t that high, and it was mostly local kids out there with a few foreigners. From the shore, there’s a long boardwalk that connects to a three-story viewing deck made of wood.

“We’ve had to fix and shore up the structure many times,” said Governor Ace Barbers, who was in town at the same time. “Typhoons will come and just destroy either part of the boardwalk or the structure.” He said it matter-of-factly, as if there’s nothing much one can do against forces of nature. Peering over the boardwalk, I saw sharp corals undulating underneath. This was not a beach meant for swimming or just floating in the warm water. The waves, even during official non-surfing season, were huge. I could just imagine surfers wiping out and being dragged amid the corals.

Nature-tripping or island-hopping—you can do all that in Siargao. If you can tear yourself away from the waves (or convince your surfing-mad companions that a few hours away from the waves can also be fun), explore the islands surrounding Siargao. We went to Guyam and Dako Islands for a bit of swimming in the white-sand beaches. Going around the islands was an eye-opener. Many of the islands and beaches we visited had few or no people at all -- which meant we had a whole paradise to ourselves. It also brought home the fact that the Philippines is so blessed with natural resources, that sometimes we take our land for granted. Floating in the warm sea, I was a bit selfish in wishing that progress is delayed to these islands, if only to preserve this ecological paradise for a while longer.

But worldly concerns mean little when you’re floating in a blue sea or lying on a deserted white sand beach, enjoying a bottle of cold beer -- which is what we ended up doing during the tour.

After several island stops, we headed out for Sohoton Caves and Lagoon, touted by one hotelier as “Siargao’s best kept secret.” It’s not exactly a secret, as most people who come to Siargao end up trekking to this magical place. The Sohoton leg of the journey proved to be the most memorable part of our whole trip.

To start with, it wasn’t the best weather to be island-hopping, even in a big outrigger used to rough seas. The day vacillated between overcast and sunny and I worried about being caught in the middle of a downpour out in the open sea. I didn’t relish being tossed about and getting soaking wet, not to mention worrying about whether we would end up capsizing or not.

But we were on a schedule, so off we went. The boatman wanted us to hurry because the only way to reach Sohoton Cove was via a natural limestone arch that gets submerged in high tide. We needed to be there in low tide for the outriggers to pass through. Halfway through our island hopping, the rain opened up and we were drenched in the downpour. It took us almost two hours to get to Sohoton Cove under heavy rain.

Imagine this: It was windy, the waves were high, and we were tossed about in the boat. The rain was pouring in torrents, cutting visibility in half because of the sea spray and mist. We were thoroughly soaked, but we were having the time of our lives. It was a thrilling boat ride, and it got even better when we reached Sohoton Cove.

The rain had dropped to a drizzle by the time we reached the entrance to the cove. Sohoton Cove is one of those majestic places words cannot describe. One just had to be there to engage in the experience.

After passing through the limestone arch, islands of lush greenery suddenly rose all around us, including tall trees and a jungle that looked unexplored. Awed by it all, we proceeded in total silence. We passed by the Horseshoe, a huge stalactite that hung to just above water level, and said to be the only way local guides can distinguish Sohoton Cove from the many beautiful coves and inlets in the area.

Here’s what I’ve observed about moments like this. When confronted with nature at its most primal, man -- no matter how modern we have become -- instinctively shuts up. It’s the atavistic fear of the unknown kicking in and the awe at a force we still haven’t contained renders us speechless. Besides, it was just so goddamn beautiful! And so it was with us, when we visited Sohoton Cove.

Sohoton Cove is one of the 10 protected areas in the country that’s part of the government’s priority list. Located in the Bukas Grande group of islands, north of Siargao, Sohoton Cove was included in the list because it has rare flora, fauna, and marine life in the area.

After a few turns around the inlets, we reach the first cave called Hagukan Cave. “Hagok” in Cebuano means “to snore” and if one listens close enough, the sound of the wind through the cave does indeed resemble the sound of snoring. The guides allowed us to swim around for a bit and even enter the dark cave. Inside, the cave and the rock formations glowed due to bioluminescence. It was an experience to be swimming in a dark cave while everything inside it emitted a faint glow. With only a head’s breadth between the caves’ ceiling and the water, swimming inside felt like being in a womb.

Next, it was off to the thrilling Magkukuob Cave. We were warned that there was only one entrance in and out of the cave, and getting out meant having to jump from a ledge some 15 feet above the lagoon. Being too chicken-hearted, I opted to stay in the boat and provide moral support to the others who were brave—or foolhardy—enough to try it. Even watching from the outrigger, it was exciting to see the jumpers on the ledge getting ready to plunge into the turquoise waters of the cove. What was even more suspenseful was that there were huge rocks jutting from the base of the cliff, and the jumpers had to jump way into the cove so they would miss the rocks. One had to be talked into taking the plunge, much like a professional negotiator would talk down a suicide attempt from jumping. Some were in tears and prayers, while a few screamed. But all eventually jumped.

One friend who bravely took the plunge summed up the experience: “You would think it’s an easy thing to just let go and jump. But when you’re on the ledge and looking at the expanse of water and the strange beautiful islands, it’s hard to just let go and trust in the infinite. Everything’s just so vast.”

I didn’t jump then, and I regret that now. Given the chance, I would return, deal with my fear and attempt the plunge. This lesson has stayed with me. A few months after my trip to Siargao, I was given another chance to leave my comfort zone and jump. It was not an actual cliff, but it nevertheless involved a plunge into the unknown. My Siargao experience helped prepare me for this day.

NAVIGATE YOURSELF: SIARGAO
As part of the island of Mindanao, Surigao del Norte and its network of islands, including Siargao island, share a diverse and rich ecosystem just waiting to be explored by the brave. Siargao is about 800 kilometers southeast of Manila, with a coastline marked by various reefs and islets.

TRAVELER’S CHECKLIST
Travel time from Manila: About 45 minutes to an hour by plane

Languages spoken: Surigaonon, Chavacano (a version of Spanish and Cebuano, quite different from Cavite Chavacano), English, Filipino, Cebuano

Local phone exchange: 86

HOW TO GET THERE
There are direct flights from Manila to Surigao City (capital of Surigao del Norte) via PAL Express. Other airlines such as Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines offer routes that fly first to either Cebu City or Butuan City before taking another flight to Surigao City. Once in Surigao City, take a pumpboat to Siargao Island, a trip which is roughly four hours.

WHEN TO GO
Prime surfing season is from July to November, when waves can reach from 10-15 feet high.

WHAT TO BRING
• Swimwear/beachwear
• For first-time surfers in Siargao, bring rubber surfing boots because you will need to walk on some rocky reefs to get to the waves
• First-aid kit
• Lots of sunblock and sunscreen
• Cash. There are no ATMs on the island
• A waterproof camera. You’ll be spending your time near large bodies of water so it makes sense to have a waterproof camera or one with a waterproof case
• A sense of daring.

WHERE TO STAY
Siargao doesn’t have that wide a range of accommodations. A lot are pension houses and hostels targeted for the backpacker/surfer crowd. Most are comfortable enough and provide a range of services, from guides to suggested itinerary.

Some recommendations:

Patrick’s on the Beach or Patrick’s on Cloud 9. One of the more established resorts in the area, accommodations here range from air-conditioned rooms to tents on the beach.

Traveller’s Pension House. Basic room with amenities. You can choose between air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms.

Kalinaw Resort. Siargao’s newest modern resort with individual cottages furnished simply but comfortably.

Pansukian Tropical Resort. If you want to go luxe, this is the place to stay. With first-world amenities and eight villas, Pansukian is the first upscale resort in Siargao.
WHAT TO DO
Two activities that encompass everything:

Surf. Enough said.

Explore the island and its environs. Most beach resorts will gladly recommend places to see and things to do. The only limit will be your time and stamina. What to see: Cloud 9, Sohoton Cove, and mangrove swamps, among others. Go sports fishing, another sport gaining popularity here.

Prime spots to ride the waves

Tuason Point: Located three kilometers north of the municipality of General Luna and is where the world-famous Cloud 9 is located. Aside from Cloud 9, try Tuason Left, about 400 kilometers south of Cloud 9. For experienced surfers only.

North of Cloud 9: Stimpies, Rock Island, Pacifico, and Burgos

GL and South: You have to hire a boat to reach these waves. Go to Daku island, east of GL for some fun small right-handers, perfect for beginners. Pansukian Reef is for experienced surfers only. Further south, near the islands of La Janoza and Mamon is Mabuntok Reef, which has waves for all levels, situated in some of the best beaches in the region.

Chinese to pursue RP nickel project

CHINA’S JINCHUAN Group Ltd. has renewed its interest to pursue a proposal to invest as much as $1.5 billion in the rehabilitation of the Nonoc nickel mines in Surigao province, according to an industry official.

Benjamin Philip Romualdez, president of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, told reporters Tuesday that talks between Jinchuan and Philnico Industrial Corp. have started.

Romualdez disclosed that the president of Jinchuan personally told him during the China Asean Mining Forum that aside from the Nonoc nickel mine, the company would likewise pursue other prospective mining projects in the country.

He added that the $1.5 billion was an earlier estimate made by the Chinese firm. This amount included a refinery as well.

Exclusive negotiations between Philnico and Jinchuan bogged down in January 2007 because the prospective Chinese investor insisted on doing another feasibility study.

Philnico president Evaristo M. Narvaez Jr. earlier said that the study would push back the project’s launch by six to 12 months without any assurance of a definitive agreement.

Narvaez earlier noted that when Jinchuan officially terminated negotiations, Philnico received offers from investors from Russia, Japan, Canada and other Chinese mining companies, all of which were in the advanced stages of due-diligence work on the project.

But by May of the same year, Philnico announced that it welcomed the offer of Jinchuan to further improve its previous proposal to invest $1 billion in the rehabilitation of the Nonoc nickel mines.

Located on Nonoc Island off Surigao City, the nickel mine is touted to hold one of the biggest nickel and cobalt resources in Southeast Asia. The Nonoc mine, which has about 60 million metric tons of nickel ore reserves, halted operations in 1982 due to high energy costs.

Philnico is 55-percent owned by Hong-Kong based Compline Resources Co., 30 percent by Australia’s Pacific Energy Ltd. and the rest by local investors.

RP a major metals producer soon
at Thursday, September 16, 2010

0diggsdigg
The Philippines can achieve a mining country status earlier than 2013 in the face of surging world metal prices, the Chamber of Mines said Tuesday.

“It’s not a remote idea. With metal prices climbing at record rates, especially gold, the country may be able to trim down our waiting period earlier than 2013,” chamber president Philip Benjamin Romualdez told reporters at the opening of conference in Manila Hotel.

Romualdez said the sector could soon contribute 5 percent to 6 percent of the country’s total exports, the benchmark used by the World Bank in defining a mining country.

The government expects more investments in the second half of the year as more foreign companies express interest to merge with local mining companies.

Mineral production is projected to hit $2.95 billion this year with the commercial operation of several mining projects, including Carmen, the expansion of Philsaga Mining Corp. and TVI Resource Development (Philippines) Inc. Mineral exports are projected to reach $2.8 billion, up 5.4 percent from $2.72 billion in 2009.

The government earlier said investments in the mining this year would reach $1.42 billion from $627.84 million in 2009. The goal figure does not include the investment plan of Sumitomo Metals Mining Corp. Ltd. for the $1.3-billion Taganito gold project in Surigao del Norte province.

Cumulative investments in the mining sector have reached $2.78 billion since 2004 and the figure could hit $13.48 billion in 2013.

“We’re not at all perturbed that the local mining sector may not reach its target investment until 2013. The government has set its sights on as much as $13 billion. We, the private sector, are playing at a little over $14 billion,” Romualdez said. Othel V. Campos, Manila Standard

great job mayor!

why? are they not visible before? :)

as for the traffic enforcers, well its the same thing and even worse, they are really visible doing nothing just standing around in front of luneta while traffic violations abound, like: out of line multicabs and even vans for municipalities soliciting passengers here in the city center depriving our terminal there of the much needed income. tricycles halting at the middle and blocking the pedestrian lane. vehicles parking on no parking zones. fruit vendors occupying road easements. whew i can go on and on.

if these traffic enforcers cannot enforce the city traffic ordinance, then i wonder who will?? its a free for all in our streets especially in the city center. :D the only thing they are doing now is just directing stop and go. no apprehensions hence no enforcement.

great changes? sorry but i beg to disagree. :)

why? are they not visible before? :)

as for the traffic enforcers, well its the same thing and even worse, they are really visible doing nothing just standing around in front of luneta while traffic violations abound, like: out of line multicabs and even vans for municipalities soliciting passengers here in the city center depriving our terminal there of the much needed income. tricycles halting at the middle and blocking the pedestrian lane. vehicles parking on no parking zones. fruit vendors occupying road easements. whew i can go on and on.

if these traffic enforcers cannot enforce the city traffic ordinance, then i wonder who will?? its a free for all in our streets especially in the city center. :D the only thing they are doing now is just directing stop and go. no apprehensions hence no enforcement.

great changes? sorry but i beg to disagree. :)

im creating a plan for the luneta park. taking away all unnecessary structures and stalls..

The pavilion will now be open for business by oct 1. with 9 souvenir shops and a children's reading center..Few modification will be done based on what i proposed. The plan will include the removal of stalls around the park.:)

The office of the City Architect i think is responsible for issuing notices for the removal of illegal structures exp. those occupying easements, issue and review building plans for permits. So sad that item is still vacant.

LME MORNING - Base metals pause on US macro data, Chinese demand worries

Thu, Sep 16 2010, 10:08 GMT
http://www.fastmarkets.com

London, 16 September 2010 - Base metals remained relatively anaemic in mid-morning trading on Thursday, with most of the complex - with the predictable exception of tin - off last night's closing levels.

"Prices are off today on further speculation that the Chinese will introduce new measures to cool the economy imminently," John Mayer, analyst at Fairfax, said. "The industrial production data coming out of the US also has had an effect today as the market digests the cooling figures and the fact that demand could drop off further towards the end of the year."

There is mounting speculation that China intends to tighten monetary policy further to curb nascent market bubbles, which traders fear could sap demand for industrial metals.

"China’s banking regulator is reportedly considering raising capital adequacy ratios at banks deemed systemically important - an outcome not unexpected, but short-term negative all the same," ANZ analysts said.

On the data front, US PPI and weekly jobless numbers will be announced at 13:30 BST, with economists expecting producer inflation at 0.3 percent for August, while jobless claims expected to remain around the 460,000 mark.

Yesterday's empire manufacturing index and industrial production numbers were disappointing, triggering renewed concerns about the global demand for base metals.

But analysts at Credit Suisse argued that the latest inventory reports still point towards stronger consumption levels, pointing out that prices declines in the complex were fairly moderate "at less than one percent for most markets".

"In the absence of any fresh impetus from the macro side, we think that consolidation is the most likely outcome for the remainder of the week," they added.

Despite soft US industrial production, a weaker US dollar could give base metals a leg up - the euro climbed to 1.3065 against the dollar early on Thursday, its highest level since August 11.

The dollar remained frail against the yen on Thursday, with Japan's intervention to weaken the yen on Wednesday coming sooner and more aggressively than many market participants had expected.

Meanwhile, European equities fell on Thursday after data showed UK retail sales volumes dropped in August for the first time since January.

TIN, NICKEL STEAL LIMELIGHT; OTHER METALS STAY IN THE SHADOWS

Tin and nickel continue to steal the show, with the former hitting $23,300 earlier, the highest since July 2008, up from $23,200 in the previous session. Although LME inventories came off their lowest level for 16 months, the overall supply forecast for tin remains weak.

Nickel traded at $23,064, a $136 loss, after reaching a high of $23,358 yesterday. The cash/threes backwardation widened to $10/20 from $5.00/10.00 yesterday.

High prices have attracted the attention of China’s Jinchuan Group - the largest nickel producer in Asia - which has renewed its interest in a proposal to invest as much as $1.5 billion in the rehabilitation of the Nonoc nickel mines in Surigao province in the southern Philippines.

Copper, which had earlier subsided below $7,600, traded at an unchanged $7,624. Stocks fell a net 2,350 tonnes to 387,150 tonnes, the lowest since November 2009. In mining news, workers at Codelco's Radomiro Tomic copper mine rejected an early wage proposal on Thursday.

Zinc traded at $2,150, up $5, while lead dipped to $2,215, a $20 loss. Aluminium was $4 lower at $2,151. Aluminium stocks, which had risen on two successive days, resumed their downtrend, falling a net 4,750 tonnes to 4,397,400 tonnes, the lowest for one month.

Steel billet was indicated lower at $480/500, while cobalt was indicated at $37,000/44,750, and molybdenum was indicated at $31,000/37,500.

Surigao Holds Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Fest
By Mike Crismundo
September 9, 2010, 7:24pm
SURIGAO CITY — Tourists, both foreign and domestic as well as Surigaonons, will be mushrooming again on the main thoroughfares of this city to witness the “2010 Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival” that reels off Friday.

Now on its 24th year, “Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival” will be staged on the city’s streets and the Provincial Sports Complex.

The “Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival 2010” is an ethnic thanksgiving celebration marked by street dancing and other festivities held in line with the annual fiesta celebration of San Nicolas De Tolentino and the 40th Charter Day of this city.

The theme of this year’s celebration is: “Surigao City in Motion …40 Years of Positive Reforms and Transparent Governance.”

“This year’s theme is indeed a very fitting testament to our strength, our vision, and our commitment as a community and as a people,” said City Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas, in an exclusive interview.

Each dance entry will present a storyline or dance scenarios taken from the place being represented and inspired from various literary forms, he said.

This year's event will be participated by contingents from different schools, barangays and municipalities, including the C.V Diez Memorial Elementary School and Surigao del Norte National High School (SNNHS).

The other contingents are from Barangay Mat-i; Barangay Luna Margarita Memorial Elementary School and Barangay Cagniog Cagasan Memorial Elementary School and Municipality of Del Carmen representing its “Bakhaw” Festival.

The competition is sponsored by the local city government, Surigao del Norte provincial government and the Surigao City Tourism Council, Inc.

Big cash prizes are at stake in the street dancing competition.

“The thrust of my administration is towards sustained economic growth. We can become a primary tourist destination if we put all our acts together. However, we need to put up very good infra facilities. We also need to put premium in creating a positive business climate so that tourists and investors will come to Surigao City,” Matugas said.

“The challenge I issue to all of us this morning as we celebrate our 40th Charter Day Celebration is: What are you willing to stand up for? My encouragement for everyone is – do something and take action about it! I urge all of you to make an impact on our community. Do not wait for City Hall to solve all our problems. You also have the power to contribute and do something. Do public service- do it with your best. Get involved,” the mayor said.

21-M tuna cannery plant to rise in Surigao City
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
September 1, 2010, 1:43am
SURIGAO CITY – The economic activity in this city is expected to get a big boost after an American and Japanese business partnership is set to construct a $21-million tuna cannery plant here, city officials said Tuesday.

It was learned that Crystal Corporation will release an initial amount of $8 million for the implementation of this tuna cannery plant.

Along with some members of the City Council, Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas said the proposed tuna cannery site will be located in an almost three-hectare area in Barangay Lipata, about seven kilometers away from the heart of this city.

“The construction of this tuna cannery plant might start before the end of this year or early next year and expected to be finished within eight months,” said Matugas.

He said the modern tuna factory is also expected to generate 2,500 to 3,000 job opportunities when it starts.

The local chief executive viewed that the plant is “really a modern-type and first-class tuna cannery plant where tons of tuna fish will be accommodated when fully operational.”

“This is really a big boost to our local economy and will add livelihood to our fishing groups and fishermen, not only in this booming city but as well as other neighboring cities and provinces in Mindanao,” said Matugas.

As this developed, the city chief executive ordered the planning development staff, engineering and other concerned division chiefs to assist the company in the preparation of the needed additional government requirements for the start and mobilization if the project.

Meanwhile, statistical records from different sources of the government and private fishing business groups showed that fishing is a P50 billion industry in the Philippines, contributing almost five percent of the country’s gross national product (GNP), it was gathered.

With an annual production volume of almost 2.5 million metric tons of fish, it directly provides livelihood and employment to almost 1.5 million Filipinos.

Tuna is among the 200 or so species of fish found in the country that have high commercial value.

The Philippines ranks 7th among the top tuna producing countries in the world in terms of fresh or frozen tuna, including canned tuna.

The tuna fishing industry had never been this promising and lucrative since its birth only on this side of the earth at General Santos City, lying at the head of the Sarangani Bay, in Southern Mindanao as early as 1970.

Accordingly, an average daily catch capacity of 750 metric tons (MT) and employing around 7,800 plant workers in General Santos City and neighboring areas, the volume of catch on a per day basis is even insignificant as to the distribution in the market.

As of September of last year alone, the total catch reached a voluminous 5,031,866 kilos where “sashimi” grade adult tuna comprises 35 percent or about 1,774,922 kilos.

23 cooperatives back building of 300-megawatt power plant
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
September 7, 2010, 1:18am
SURIGAO CITY – At least 23 electric cooperatives in Mindanao are vigorously looking for means to avert power crisis in the future by recommending the construction of a 300-megawatt (mW) power plant to address the problem.

The 23-member Association of Mindanao Electric Cooperatives (Ameco) made the recommendation to the Department of Energy (DoE) to support the current Mindanao grid and to avert future incidence of power crisis.

This recommendation is part of Ameco’s 2013-2016 power development plan in Mindanao.

“Aside from future power crisis, this idea also came out to support the fast-growing growth in the island as more big companies and future investments are coming in,” said a top official and electric cooperative manager in the region.

“If this plan will succeed, it will revolutionalize power industry in Mindanao and looming power oligopoly will be cut-off,” said the official by not elaborating further.

These 23 power cooperatives have already started clustering procedure in preparation for the distribution of the recommended 300-mW.

The construction of the additional 300-mW will cost at least $2.5 million per mW, the coop official said.

Currently, the Mindanao grid has a current capacity of 1,237-mW. However, 200-mW was already bought by the Aboitiz group.

In a related development, a two-day business investment forum is set in Northern Mindanao to focus on the power situation and its effect in agri-business in the second largest island in the Philippines.

The Mindanao Investment Forum and Mindanao Business Conference, which is being hosted by the Oro Chamber, will run from September 17 to 18 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant at the Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City.

The conference is organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), with support from the Cagayan de Oro City government, USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), and other partners.

Mindanao-wide projects in the energy sector will be among the investment proposals during that big gathering.

President Aquino is invited in the business forum to present his power and business agenda for Mindanao, it was gathered.

Japan’s Sumitomo to pursue $1.3B Taganito nickel mine in Surigao Norte
By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:01:00 09/14/2010

Filed Under: business, Mining and quarrying, Investments
MANILA, Philippines—Japan’s Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. is pushing through with the $1.3-billion Taganito nickel mining project in Surigao del Norte, which it targets to complete within three years’ time.

The Taganito mine, once it begins commercial operations by August 2013, is expected to produce an initial 30,000 tons of contained nickel every year for at least 20 years, according to Arturo T. Manto, vice president at Coral Bay Nickel Corp., a vehicle company that is 54-percent owned by Sumitomo.

At the sidelines of the 2010 Philippine Mining Conference and Exhibition, Manto further said that production at the mine could easily be expanded to as much as 45,000 tons of contained nickel.

The high grade nickel to be produced from the Taganito mine, he disclosed, would be supplied to Pacific Metals Co. Ltd. of Japan.

So far, about 70 percent of the civil works for the mine had already been completed, Manto said.

Manto also explained that the original investment amount was a high of about $2 billion, but the company managed to bring the cost down by simplifying the design of the planned mine and processing facility.

It was only in 2009 that Sumitomo decided to proceed with the Taganito nickel mine project. During that time, it had forged a memorandum of understanding on the joint implementation of the project with Nickel Asia Corp., led by its chairman, Manuel B. Zamora Jr.

The Taganito project, Sumitomo explained, has been planned as a large-scale hydrometallurgical project that would apply high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) process, a technology today garnering attention worldwide.

HPAL technology enables the recovery of nickel and cobalt from low-grade nickel oxide ore. Previously, recovery of valuable metals from such ore had been difficult.

In August 2009, Sumitomo made a capital investment into Nickel Asia and acquired a 16.5-percent stake.

“With promotion of the Taganito Project applying HPAL technology, Sumitomo will achieve comprehensive capacity to produce 100,000 tons of nickel annually – not only solidifying its position as one of the world’s leading nickel producer but also bringing the company increasingly closer to becoming a major player in non-ferrous metals,” Sumitomo said in an earlier statement.

Miner finds ‘gold cap’ in Surigao site

AUSTRALIAN miner Red 5 Ltd. said yesterday it had found a “gold cap” above potential gold-copper mineralization at its Mapawa project in Surigao del Norte.

A gold cap is a mineral-rich layer on top of a bigger mineralization or ore body.

An initial six diamond drill holes have been completed to determine the nature of the layer above the “gold-copper porphyry,” managing director Greg Edwards said in a statement disclosed in the Australian Securities Exchange.

Earlier drilling at the site showed ores with 1.2 grams of gold per metric ton (MT) and 0.16% copper, and ores with 0.2 grams of gold per MT and 0.15% zinc.

The miner started drilling at Mapawa in January.

Red 5 also operates the Siana gold project, also located in Surigao del Norte. First gold from Siana is expected in April 2011.

Surigao Norte to set fixed rates for transport, other services catering to tourists
at Sunday, September 19, 2010

0diggsdigg
Complaints that operators of public transport and other services are charging unjust rates local and foreign tourists visiting Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands in Surigao del Norte, have prompted the provincial government to come up with fixed rates for these services.

The Provincial Development Tourism Council and the Provincial Tourism Office are leading the efforts to eradicate the decade-long problem of rip-off victimizing tourists especially foreigners who travel to the picturesque islands of the province.

Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Ivonnie B. Dumadag of the Provincial Tourism Office said the province is serious in providing solutions to the problem.

“Through the Provincial Development Tourism Council and Provincial Tourism Office, we will come up with standardized rates which will be put in designated places mostly in entry points,” Dumadag said.

She added standard rates would also apply to other services for tourists.

The tourism office received reports that at Sohoton Cove and caves in Bucas Grande Island excessive entrance fees are being collected from local and foreign tourists.

Dumadag said the tourism council already sent a letter to the local government unit in Socorro town to explain the reports of excessive collection or charges.

She said if the practice of charging exorbitant fees goes unchecked, it will drive away tourists.

She admitted that while some LGUs have set transportation fare matrices most of these are not being followed because of the unstable pump price.

She said pump boats have no fare matrix because most of them operate with neither fixed rates nor regular destinations, unlike the motor bancas docked at Surigao ports.

MindaNews tried but failed to contact Provincial Tourism Development Council chairman Jake Miranda.

Asked for comment, German national Kristine Vidazi, who often visits Siargao Islands, said it is a good move to set standard fare rates which will be displayed in conspicuous places like in airports and seaports because she and other foreigners who consider Siargao as their second hometown often get ripped off.

Vidazi, who has been visiting the country for almost three decades now, finds Siargao a Shangri-La of an island.

“The cost of living is still low plus the beauty of nature is incomparable to other regions; it makes me stay good for long in this place,” she said. (Roel Catoto/MindaNews)

Korean investors eye coal-fired power plant in Surigao City
at Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Korean investors have expressed interest to build a coal-fired power plant in this city, Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas said.

In a press conference recently held at the city hall, Matugas said he recently met the investors in Manila and they told him they plan to put up a coal-fired mega-power plant here.

But the mayor said a 300-megawatt power plant might be too huge, adding a 30-megawatt capacity is ideal for the city’s power needs.

He said he will see to it that the planned power plant would not harm the environment.

Environmentalists have repeatedly warned against the ill-effects of coal-fired power plants on the environment and human health.

Matugas further announced that American and Japanese investors are set to build a $21-million tuna cannery plant in the city.

The Crystal Corporation will release an initial amount of $8 million for the construction which will start either within the year or early next year, he said.

“Their target is eight months to finish after the start of construction,” he said.

The mayor said the state-of-the-art tuna cannery will generate 2,500 to 3,000 jobs once it becomes starts to operate.

He said he also talked to three mining firms that wanted to invest here.

He added a hotelier based in Davao City wanted to open a branch in the city.

Matugas said the investors have made inquiries at his office on the requirements for their proposed area of investments and conducted site inspections.

He said he has asked the support of the Sangguniang Panlungsod in order to boost the local economy.

City Administrator Balgamelo Ma told MindaNews that the proposed tuna cannery plant will be put up along the city’s coastal area. (Roel N. Catoto/MindaNews)

guys when magopen ang unicity dha surigao

According to the Taiwanese contractor, Mr. Michael Yau, they are in a rush to complete the project within November this year. The Unicity owner is targeting to open the store/mall this November only. Neon green kuno an color nan building, dili kun yellow. Kun unoy hitsura sa ilayom, imagina ra kan kuno an Novo sa tapad. toinks! Well, at least.

as i said before, two story ra sija. the 3rd floor at the end portion of the building is just a small space for their bodega. extended an ija roof sa front kay overhang kuno an front portion nan second floor. tapos an original design dili kun firewall to firewall an roofing, kuman tag firewall to firewall na nan owner. amo jaon an mga columns sa right side bagan ka awkward tan-awon kay dili symmetrical. inday unhon jaon pag-paigo nan contractor.
