While I was in Manila working many years ago, I met a Surigaonon and asked him how is Surigao. "Mao lang gihapon, pirme gi bagyo", was his reply. I think some Surigaonons could be blamed for the "bad" image of Surigao as a typhoon-prone province. In fact and in truth, Surigao del Norte is not a typhoon-prone province because it is below the typhoon belt or area of the Philippines according to the Weather Bureau (now Pagasa).

Abundant rains, yes but not typhoons. Even the rains are not as heavy today compared to several years back due to the effects of climate change. Surigao del Norte is categorized as rarely hit by tropical typhoons. Metro Manila, Bicol, Southern Tagalog and Northern Luzon are frequently hit by typhoons. Curiously, Samar and Leyte are not even in this category! Western Mindanao and Southern Mindanao are very rarely hit by a typhoon.

The main reason why Surigao del Norte, Samar and Leyte are known as typhoon-prone provinces is because these provinces used to be the reference point of incoming typhoon even if it is still very far away in the Pacific Ocean. Thanks to officials of these provinces which complained to Pagasa not to mention the provinces as a reference point if the typhoon is still very far away. Today, a typhoon far away in the Pacific east of Surigao or Leyte or Samar is now referred to as east of Mindanao or Visayas or Philippines. Most of the incoming typhoon normally goes upward towards the Bicol, Southern Tagalog, Metro Manila and other regions of Luzon.

Next time, Surigaonons should insist that Surigao del Norte is not a typhoon-prone province. Instead, it is a lovely province with world-class beaches and beautiful sceneries.

OWWA Caraga to hold OFW Family Day in Surigao
at Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Surigao City (December 7) - The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA-Caraga) is set to hold an Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) “Family Day 2010” on December 11, 2010 at the new provincial gymnasium this city.

OWWA-13 OIC Director Marietta Lumawag said the event will pay tribute and celebrate the worthy contributions of our modern day heroes -- the OFWs and their families, “for keeping the country’s economy afloat.”

Some 2,000 OFWs along with their family members coming from the different municipalities all over the region are expected to participate in the activity.

“We have a number of activities prepared for them and these include raffle draw, games, fun & entertainment, production numbers, and Christmas carol contest for OFWs and their familes. They will definitely enjoy,” Lumawag said.

Lumawag also said that OWWA will award the outstanding OFW organizations and social partners and the “OWWAish Ko Lang” OFW Family beneficiaries. The said award according to Lumawag will be given to OFWs who decided to work abroad for a certain dream or wish for his family, but was forced to return home without finishing their contracts because of misfortune or uncontrollable circumstances. “The winners for OWWAish Ko Lang will be given a P10,000 cash prize as a gift from OWWA,” she added.

A Medical-Dental mission will also be offered to the OFW participants and their families in partnership with DOH, Red Cross, PCSO, Philippine Army and the Office of Sen. Many Villar.

Meantime, Dir. Lumawag revealed that with their strong partnership with the local government units (LGUs), a MOA signing with the LGUs and the Congressional Districts on the establishment of the OFW Help Desk will also be held on the same day.

Lumawag also announced that POEA will conduct a mini-jobs fair with 5 recruitment agencies already confirmed to participate.

The OFW Family Day, which is an annual activity of the agency, is OWWA's way of thanking OFWs and aims to highlight the sacrifices of the OFWs and their families, especially, those who are displaced and those who bear the social cost of migration.

This year, Globe Telecoms, BPI Pinoy and Banco de Oro are the OWWA's major private partners. (PIA-Surigao del Norte)

Good Morning Surigao!

Mingaw man. haman ang mga tawo?

Im tuning in at DXKS now, listening its local radio program sponsored by the Provincial Government of this Province. first time I've heard this Bag-ong Surigao jingle. hmmmm the melody is OK as well as the message of the song but it's a disappointment that the lyrics was not made in Surigaonon language, it's pure cebuano to think that our Hon. Governor is a former DepEd head she should have made this song sound as our own. tana may exact/proper info sa composer para this song should sound na surigaonon maski dili surigaonon ang composer.

anyway, opinion ko ra isab ton.

Instead of being concerned, worried or even angry at the traffic situation in Surigao City, I'm delighted. It means that Surigao City has joined the ranks of the more progressive cities of the country. If one goes to Manila or Cebu, the traffic situation is terrible but these two cities also happens to be the most progressive cities in the country. This is also true of other cities like Angeles, Iloilo or Baguio just to name a few. There are many cities without any traffic problems but they are "sleepy cities".

When Surigao started as a new city in the 70's, it was called a "one-street city" because only Rizal street could be considered busy. Early in the afternoon, the city went to "sleep" with most of the streets empty of vehicles. But today, this is no longer the case. Throughout the day and night, Surigao is so busy that it has become a "multiple-street" city. With more investments, Surigao City could become a big metropolis.

matter of perspective i guess. For those of us who suffer the inconvenience of this traffic its a bane. I agree its an indication of increase economic activity it also betrays the lack of planning and preparation of the local authorities. and by that i do not mean the present new one, but the old ones.

The original owner of the lot offered it to the city in exchange for a residential lot but some bright people in the city did not agree citing technical and legal reasons. iton jaoy nay private rural bank in the midst of the local government offices. i wonder what that bright employee is thinking right now.:ohno:

so long as past and present city administrations continue putting former policemen (or radio commentators :)) as traffic administrators then we will always have these problems. the expertise of these people are only on the level of enforcement and not on transport planning & management which is the base of effective traffic management.

compounding the problem is our present traffic ordinance which is solely a product of our city council without consultations or inputs from concerned technical departments like planning, engineering, and concerned national agencies. in other words the basis for the policies put into effect are not on an existing traffic management plan (we do not have one) or accepted principles of transport planning but rather "oido-oido" lang. :D

with this problem in san nicolas st. along unicity probably what the SP will do again is consult transport operators and policemen and not technical people on what to do to ease the flow of traffic in the area. :) all will have lots of solutions and suggestions but i bet not one will suggest to conduct a study or a simple traffic count - maybe on a 12-hour cycle for at least 1 week just to have some data coming from the ground to have factual basis for succeeding policies that may be imposed. hohayyz !! :D

Id like to see the data on this. I know there was a problem with the scholarship because of the way it was being handled by a certain co-terminus employee then. pero to reach 10M? i really doubt that but then again if i can see the data proving this, well ill change.

The scholarship was never exclusive to Trade, it was open to all schools basta kay surigao city base ra.

As to qualification? thats a big if! he he he adton nag handle sa scholarship sa una, inday hae na sija kuman then an nipuli sab sa ija, sobra pa sa mismanage. hmmm 3 Yrs ya kabayri? i doubt that, students are not allowed to take the final exams if the accounts are not settled, samot na graduating students. Thats for every semester and not annual ha.

Anyway ill try to check on this. But i have a sneaking feeling that this another excuse para sa mga jo na ya ksweldohi.

Again, as i always tell my friends inside who ar enew to the LGU operations. The IRA is given monthly. They have been in power since July, thats six months worth of IRA already.

There is no more monhly payment for the Public Market loan kay completed na, the same for the bus terminal. The premiums of the loan for the new office building is being paid by the rentals of Land bank. The loan for the CHP bldg, is likewise being paid by the rentals of that building.

If there were errors in the past admin, the present admin have already 6 months to fix it. question is , do they know how?

if i am not mistaken it's the LGU of Maasin City will construct the building and the Metro Gaisano group will be just a tenant for department store and supermarket. it is not the gaisano company ang nag construct sa building. same with the other cities or progressive municipalities, it's the prerogative of the LGU. diri sa ato, ang interesado i guess is the gaisano itself but then we are not just simply qualified yet for now to have a mall in my opinion. maybe sooner or later.

Caraga eyeing more investments in 2011
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
December 15, 2010, 4:30pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – The Caraga Region or Region 13 is eyeing at least P4 billion in investments in 2011 which it hopes to materialize, and beyond, it was learned Wednesday.

This developed after the Region 13 office here of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI 13) through its Investment Marketing Facilitation (IMF) unit shared the information during the agency’s assessment of its preliminary annual accomplishment early this week.

The investment prospects level is almost double in the reported 2010’s (P2.6 billion) actualized impacted by the agency.

Prospects in the agricultural sector account for 87 percent, power generation – between three to five percent, and aquaculture – about two percent, and a small mining project.

This, however, does not include the bigger mining projects already reported to be in the pipeline.

Should all these prospects materialize, Agusan del Sur is expected to host half of all the identified potential investments coming from palm oil production and processing and the mineral extraction project in the Bunawan area.

It was gathered that this city may get about 22 percent to come from the aqua/agricultural sector (about P770 million), and information and technology-related investments (about P120 million).

While Surigao del Sur hopefully will get its share from the setting up of a Cavendish banana plantation and processing facility.

On the other hand, Surigao del Norte is also picking up when the multi-million-dollar tuna processing plant will rise in 2011, the DTI report said.

Agusan del Norte investments are expected to come from the agricultural sector and the planned facility investments from the power generation sector.

“We are only talking of businesses that pass our office and this does not include other business investments recorded by other agencies that are burgeoning at various parts in the region,” said DTI 13 Director Brielgo O. Pagaran on Wednesday.

He added that several business investments also noted by other line agencies of the government like in the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Tourism (DoT), and Department of Agriculture.

In a related development, the region-wide effort of the DTI in the Caraga Region on trade promotion has generated domestic sales of P411.41 million for the year 2010.

Sales came mostly from financing facilitation and market matching and facilitation. The rest came from trade fairs and “pasalubong centers,” and inbound selling missions.

Caraga producers who joined international trade fairs obtained sales which accounted for 85 percent of the total sales from trade fairs.

Caraga producers who joined international trade fairs obtained sales which accounted for 85 percent of the total sales from trade fairs.

if i am not mistaken it's the LGU of Maasin City will construct the building and the Metro Gaisano group will be just a tenant for department store and supermarket. it is not the gaisano company ang nag construct sa building. same with the other cities or progressive municipalities, it's the prerogative of the LGU. diri sa ato, ang interesado i guess is the gaisano itself but then we are not just simply qualified yet for now to have a mall in my opinion. maybe sooner or later.

We already did that here in Surigao City.

The Luneta ARcade I occupied by Metro shopping and other lessees. then the luneta arcade II occupied by Health Specialists, CHP and other lessees.

Then you also have Almont REsort whihc was originally Maharlika Resort.

This might be a good idea to explore.

thank you very much mike for this video. it's actually a very long one and i was not able to view all, so I cannot comment at the moment on the contents of the presentation.

anyways, just the other day the solar report from noaa is now describing the solar activity from very low to just low. I have also observed since this October that that the daily sunspot number reported by noaa is also increasing. though their predictions is not that high in the coming years but I'm hoping that it will continue that trend.

it's just disturbing that numerous daily record low temperatures were recorded recently in many areas around the world particularly in the northern part of the equator. the other week sa area nan europe, and just this weekend sa north america na naman. today, di na ta mulajo, sa area nan southern china. as reported by HKO, the local observatory of hong kong, the area called tai mo shan which is relatively near hong kong has reported today a -2C temp with some ice or frost pa daw.

Rising water of Lake Mainit in Caraga: boon or bane?
Posted on 08:25 PM, December 16, 2010

http://www.bworldonline.com/webpics/articles/image/201012168d957.jpg

KITCHARAO, AGUSAN DEL NORTE -- During the rainy season from November to March, the water level of Lake Mainit rises by at least one meter. When typhoons hit, the lake, which is shared by Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte in the Caraga Region, goes up as high as three meters, a team from the Mindanao State University reported.

Locals have called this yearly phenomenon guob. As much of the 62-km shoreline of Lake Mainit consists of rice fields, guob is particularly apparent when thousands of rice fields near the lake are flooded.

Alejandro Felecio, president of Lapucon Farmers Organization said that through the years, many farmers at Lake Mainit have come to understand the pattern.

“Neophyte farmers at Lake Mainit who do not understand the ‘guob’ will only encounter crop failure,” he said. Mr. Felecio added it is actually beneficial to the farmers since rotten rice stalks and leaves become natural fertilizers.

Kaiser B. Recabo, Jr., director of the Lake Mainit Development Alliance (LMDA), said there are two sides to the guob.

On one hand, the rising water is beneficial to the many fish species in the lake as it gives them more space. On the other hand, people who live by the lakeshore complain it destroys their properties.

Siltation, the LMDA director said, is the main cause of guob. Heavy rainfall can easily increase the lake level since water cannot get out considering Lake Mainit has only one outlet -- the 29 km Kalinawan River.

Through the years, Mr. Recabo said, there have been many suggestions to eradicate the guob. These suggestions, he said, include the dredging of the Kalinawan River, construction of a dike system and establishing of other siltation control infrastructures.

Another recommendation was to open up a portion of the mountain that separates Lake Mainit and the Mindanao Sea. Through this opening, the lake water can drain out and be utilized to generate hydroelectric power for the Caraga Region, the LMDA director said.

However, he said the above-mentioned suggestions and recommendations should be thoroughly studied first.

An 18-month feasibility study is under way to study the many options for Lake Mainit, Mr. Recabo said, noting the establishment of a hydroelectric power plant at Lake Mainit has long been on the drawing board of the government.

Based on the report of the Philippine Information Agency in 1994, then president of the National Power Corp. Guido A. Delgado authorized the Agusan Power Corp. to develop the Lake Mainit hydroelectric power plant in the town of Jabonga in Agusan del Norte.

In the Infrastructure Philippines 2010 Summit last month, Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras said one of the possible projects in Mindanao where the government and private sector could partner is a 25-megawatt Lake Mainit hydropower prospect in Jabonga. The Department of Energy estimated that the project will cost $62.50 million.

But in the ‘Limnological and Water Quality Assessment of Lake Mainit,’ Mindanao State University (MSU) researchers said “the plan to develop a hydroelectric generating plant that would tap Lake Mainit for its water source would certainly have a far-reaching impact on the biology and ecology of some important aquatic plant and animal species thriving in the lake.”

The MSU researchers added that anything that “would allow an excessive fluctuation of the water level in the lake would also have drastic impacts on the ecology of some lakeshore habitats and may end up seriously damaging important lake fisheries.”

Although Lake Mainit is only the fourth largest lake in the Philippines, with a total surface area of 17,060 hectares, it is the country’s deepest lake.

In a 1973 study of Lake Mainit, researcher William Lewis, Jr. found it has a maximum depth of 223 meters and a mean depth of 128 meters. In the recent MSU study, researchers found out that the lake has a maximum depth of 219 meters and mean depth of 122 meters -- a few meters short of the Lewis study. The different could be traced to siltation.

Mr. Lewis reported that the lake lies 27 meters above sea level while the more recent MSU-Naawan report showed that the lake lies 21 meters above sea level.

Towering mountains surround this lake. On the west side, the lake is separated from the Mindanao Sea by mountains as high as 600 meters. On the east side, the lake is flanked by mountains as high as 1,000 meters.

Lake Mainit is a highly productive wetland ecosystem. In a 1980-1981 study called “Fisheries yields and morphoedaphic index of Lake Mainit,” researchers headed by Daniel Pauly found 37 species of fish at the lake. However, in a 2007-2008 study, researchers from MSU found 41 species of fish.

Although the MSU researchers found more species, 13 species found by Mr. Pauly’s group were not on the list of the university-based researchers.

UK WEATHER: FREEZE UNTIL FEBRUARY IN WORST SNOW FOR 100 YEARS
Thursday December 16 2010 by Nathan Rao

BRITAIN is today braced for the worst blizzards in nearly 100 years – with up to a foot of snow set to cause widespread chaos.

Forecasters warn gale-force winds of up to 60mph will sweep across some areas, leading to snowdrifts up to 6ft deep in places.

The second big freeze of the *winter could last until February.

It could spell a repeat of the chaos at the beginning of the month when dozens of major roads were crippled and railways ground to a halt.

Forecasters warn blizzards could be more serious than the infamous snowstorm of 1963 and the 1927 Christmas Day blizzard.

The Met Office has issued extreme weather warnings for snow and icy roads today, tomorrow and the weekend, with Scotland, the North and West on amber alert – the *second highest level.

Snow is expected in the North, Birmingham, and Wales by lunchtime, with up to an inch forecast for London and the South-east by the end of the day.

Winds of up to 55mph are expected to hit Cornwall, with Lancashire in for 46mph gusts. Aberdeenshire is predicted to get a 62mph battering, with eight inches of snow in parts.

In exposed rural areas, temperatures could plummet to minus 15C overnight tomorrow with Arctic winds making it feel like -20C.

Snow will fall over most of Britain on Saturday, with widespread ice on untreated roads.

The South is at risk of 12 inches of snow on Sunday or Monday if moist continental air collides with cold air over Britain.

Jonathan Powell, senior forecaster for Positive Weather Solutions, said: “A tremendous battle is getting ready to square up and the cold will run through January, and possibly into February. This is going to be a very severe white-out, initially coming in a short burst very quickly.”

Motorists are being warned to keep an emergency kit, including blankets and a shovel, in the car.

AA president Edmund King said: “We are concerned that some drivers have not made enough preparations. Highway authorities will be under great pressure as their dwindling salt supplies are stretched.”

Tomorrow is predicted to be the start of the Christmas getaway on the roads, railways and airports.

Preparations are being made to keep disruption to a minimum after Gatwick and Edinburgh airports closed during the earlier freeze.

Gatwick’s Sarah Baranowski said a team of 100 people were on standby to keep runways clear. She said: “We are as ready as we can be.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said snowploughs and de-icing* *vehicles were on standby. He said: “We are well prepared.”

The Highways Agency said it was “well-prepared” to keep major roads and motorways moving. A spokesman said: “Contractors are at full readiness and roads will be treated wherever snow or ice are forecast.”

The Department for Transport said 250,000 tons of salt would be brought in to replenish any taken from a national strategic stockpile.

Netweather forecaster Ian Michael White said: “The most recent weather comparable to what we are about to see is the Christmas Day blizzard of 1927. The South was left with 20ft snowdrifts and paralysed for a more than a week.”

We already did that here in Surigao City.

The Luneta ARcade I occupied by Metro shopping and other lessees. then the luneta arcade II occupied by Health Specialists, CHP and other lessees.

Then you also have Almont REsort whihc was originally Maharlika Resort.

This might be a good idea to explore.

i think same thing, an LGU rakan an mag tukod nan building did-on sa boulevard kay para ma waya na sa picture si boyaks kay sayang karajaw an lugar na maka generate nan marajaw na income, likewise maka dugang nan employment and other opportunities.

10 x 1000 watt lights that were purchased in China 3 months ago have finally arrived at the Cloud Nine Night Surfing Headquarters in Siargao after being held up in Manila Airport by Philippine Customs. The lights and cables are being installed in the tower 24/7 due to electricians only being able to access the tower from low tide which is at 11am and then 11pm which is proving to be quite a tedious job for those involved.

Some people find this as an interesting concept in the surfing world and some find it as a questionable project. There are skeptic circles in the island that has some degree of doubt regarding the strength of the lights etc. Yet electrical and building engineers as well as many professorial surfers and surf event organisers have put many long hours and large amounts of money to ensure 100% that this will be an amazing success as the worlds first night surfing. Just to make sure no one is endangered and left in the dark by a black out or power failure Cloud Nine Night Surfing management have installed a UPS (unlimited power supply) providing emergency power if the main source of electricity fails.

They also have 3 fully trained, equipped and internationally certified and recognized lifeguards keeping a watchful eye at all times (2 lifeguards in the water and 1 in the tower). There will be different means of communication – loud halers and also hand signals.

The opening of the Cloud Nine Night Surfing has also been moved to New Years Eve Friday 31st of December 2010 and will host the best male and female surfers in the Philippines – Osot, Carlito, Dodo, Piso, Arkipo, Paul John, Philmar, Neldy , Nelvy and Manette were all guaranteed for some amazing surfing from high flying airs to deep long barrel rides.

There will be two by 1hr demonstration starting from 9pm to 11pm with some awesome entertainment to start the New Year off for 2011. San Miguel Corporation is sponsoring the opening night starting at 7pm with a live band, food, drinks and plenty of giveaways. People from all parts of the world will also be able to watch the live surfing at Cloud Nine 24/7 both night and day via the live web cam at www.cloudninenightsurfing.com. (cloudninesurf.com)

A business leader of Surigao City, a small third class city in at the northeastern tip of Mindanao has been named by President Benigno S. Aquino III as the representative of all businessmen at the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

Johann Jake Miranda, 36 years old, is currently the president of the Surigao Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) which is the leading business organization in the city. Miranda is expected to bring forth the voices of all businessmen and private corporations of the six regions in Mindanao; region 9, 10, 11, 12, Caraga and ARMM.

Surigao City, which belongs to the Caraga region, is emerging as the premier mining city in the country. All major mining corporations operate one or two mining sites in this mineral rich corner of Mindanao. However, Caraga Region as a whole remains as the second poorest region in the county next only to impoverished and war-stricken Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

Sec. Lualhati Antonino, Chairperson of the MinDA recognized Mr. Miranda's proven leadership and vigorous desire to help uplift the economic conditions of Caraga Region. She added that Mr. Miranda can very well contribute to the President's developmental agenda for Mindanao such as pushing for public-private partnership at all levels.

The feats of Mr. Miranda has also earned him the support of local business players particularly from the small and medium enterprise. His appointment was also supported by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry national leadership.

This is a new tack of the Aquino presidency to give the smaller cities in the country a voice in national development. Caraga which can now be represented by Mr. Miranda at MinDA will be the proper poverty index on which to measure any success of the Aquino government and private sector efforts on socio-economic development.

While president of SCCI, Mr. Miranda garnered for the SCCI the Most Outstanding Chamber Award for three straight years from 2008 to 2010. Earlier in 2007, Surigao was hailed as the Most Business friendly City in Mindanao.

Mr. Miranda was given a citation by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry for organizing the Surigao Young Business Alliance (SYBA), pioneering the conglomeration of a growing organization of young businessmen and professionals under the age of 40 based in Surigao City.

Mr. Miranda is also the chairman of the Surigao Provincial Tourism Development Council. Just recently, Mr. Miranda mourned the passing of his father, Dr. Josefino P. Miranda, also a known socio-civic leader in Surigao, who was buried today in private ceremonies at the family-owned Surigao Memorial Park in Surigao City. (SCCI/PIA-Surigao del Norte)

Just want to share my post at the weather thread:

Just want to share this very unusual news from Australia when they are supposed to be at summer time now.

From The Telegraph:

Wintry weather brings snow to Australia in midsummer

Australia normally experiences temperatures of 86F (30C) at this time of year, but the chances of a rare white Christmas have increased after plunging temperatures and snow swept across the east of the country.

By Bonnie Malkin, Sydney 11:24AM GMT 20 Dec 2010

Freezing winds from Antarctica, blown up to Australia by a low-pressure system in the Southern Ocean, gave the country a taste of the conditions that are causing havoc across Europe.

Some 11 inches of snow fell at the ski fields in New South Wales, raising the prospect that parts of the country could experience a white Christmas.

"It's white, everything is white," Michelle Lovius, the general manager of the Kosciuszko Chalet Hotel at Charlotte Pass, said.

"First thing this morning everything was just very still, very peaceful and every single thing was just blanketed in a thick cover of white."

At the ski fields, children in Father Christmas hats, who would usually be sunning themselves on the grassy slopes, made snowballs and rode on sleds.

Miss Lovius said such a large amount of snow was unusual for early December, normally the peak of the wild flower season in the mountainous region.

"We're hoping that it (the cold) stays in for five days and we get a white Christmas," she said.

In one part of the state temperatures dropped as low 39.2F (4C), the coldest December morning in 54 years, according to the Weather Channel.

Further south in the state of Victoria, Mt Hotham had four inches of snow and Mt Buller up to two inches.

"It is a blanket of white, which is beautiful at this time of year.

People are out in their Father Christmas hats taking photos in the snow," Maureen Gearon, Victorian Snow Report spokesman, told the Australian news agency AAP.

The cold blasts even blew into Sydney, where the temperature fell to an unseasonably cold 55F (13C), and dipped to 49.6F (9.8C) in the city's west while winds of up to 62 miles an hour swept along much of the state's coastline.

Extreme weather in other parts of the country caused the worst flooding in 50 years.

In the isolated the town of Carnarvon, 560 miles north of Perth, swiftly rising waters led to widespread damage to crops and cattle stations.

Group formulates plans, programs to draw more investments in 2011

December 21, 2010, 3:54pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – In an effort to be more globally competitive in year 2011, the League of Cities in this second largest island in the country are formulating plans and development programs to attract more and better investments in their respective cities, it was learned Tuesday.

It was also learned that the leaders of the League of Cities in Mindanao are currently coordinating with their respective Regional Development Councils (RDCs), various Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Mindanao, and other notable investment groups and business stakeholders to formalize various business and development ventures.

The league is also closely coordinating with the Mindanao Economic Development Authority (MinDA) to tie-up with the government’s 2011 Mindanao Economic Development Agenda.

The leaders of the cities in Mindanao such as from Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, General Santos, and Surigao meet recently to tackle their business objectives in 2011.

In that meeting, Surigao City Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas, Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr., Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano, and Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte were in unison in binding themselves to achieve their goals beginning next year.

Also in that same meeting, leaders from these growing cities, along with other concerned government line agencies such as the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) came up with several strategic development plans to attract more investments, both foreign and local.

“We are in unison. Our target is also to increase more economic activities that will reduce poverty in the countryside,” said Mayor Matugas.

Government’s employment generation in this new scheme will also spur and added livelihood and income to rural businesses, the Surigao City’s Chief Executive added.

The meeting of the League of Cities in Mindanao in Davao City was supported by the Local Implementation of National Competitiveness for Economic Growth (LINC-EG) Project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) which aims to increase the competitiveness of local government units, especially in Mindanao.

yeah its exciting but the problem its not accessible specially when monsoon are coming! big waves will be the main delima....while if surigao will be having river cruise somehow its ok....because its access to the city is really visible! another tourism activity in the city!if this happen in the near future, for sure barangay sabang will boom!and later it will be one of the highly populated barangay soon!

the place is already full around past 10p.m. the crowd is good but the waitresses are better :D:D. beer all kinds is P55/bot and the food is a bit pricey since the servings are small compared to all the other bars like tavern, islands or frankloyds.

the only catch is you have to go out for the toilets and they tolerate smoking inside. except for the waitresses there is no live entertainment yet, just blasting music and laser lights. :)

this is what i've heard, instead of Jollibee-Tandag, they rather open sa Jollibee-Surigao 2nd branch. thus til kuman na on-hold status ang tandag. as mentioned by invhictus before, jollibee 2nd branch in surigao will be located at the jucntion of Rizal and capitol road where a caltex station is located now. ila ra kan daw taghuyat na mo expire na ang kontrata between caltex ug ang owner nan lot.

this is what i've heard, instead of Jollibee-Tandag, they rather open sa Jollibee-Surigao 2nd branch. thus til kuman na on-hold status ang tandag. as mentioned by invhictus before, jollibee 2nd branch in surigao will be located at the jucntion of Rizal and capitol road where a caltex station is located now. ila ra kan daw taghuyat na mo expire na ang kontrata between caltex ug ang owner nan lot.

I urge our LGU to build a commercial building @ the boulevard exactly the same location where City Mall proposed like Pagadi-an City C3 Mall with anchor tenant Robinson's. Similar agreement with Maasin LGU and Metro Gaisano.

15 out-of-town contingents to join Sinulog Festival 2011 parade
Dec 27th, 2010 by Philippine Travel Blog.

Fifteen provinces and cities outside Cebu will join some 30 local contingents in next month’s Sinulog grand parade, which will also feature 500 performers for the grand finale.

The Sinulog 2011 edition will pay tribute to the Chinese community and celebrate Chinese influence in the local culture and economy.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director Ricky Ballesteros said although they cannott match the production numbers during the opening of the Beijing Olympics, they will try to do something similar to give the parade an authentic Chinese feel.

Aside from the performances, the stage and street décor for the grand parade will also have a touch of Chinese, including the use of huge drums and other Chinese musical instruments.

The contingents will still perform the traditional “two steps forward, one step backward” Sinulog dance, but organizers expect the music and props to feature Chinese influences.

“Even our fireworks display and the stage will have Chinese-themed design. There will also be a dragon dance during the finale. We have done our research to make sure that our tribute to the Chinese community will come out well,” Ballesteros said.

As they complete the preparations for the parade on Jan. 16, he urged the contingents to also do their research so they can come up with new and unique concepts for their story line, costumes and props.

“There are 15 out-of-town contingents joining next year, that’s why the locals are expecting tough competition. So I hope the contingents will also go out of their way to come up with something unique and new so the audience will see a bigger and better Sinulog next month,” Ballesteros added.

Among the contingents from Mindanao that have confirmed to join are the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Surigao del Norte, North Cotabato and South Cotabato, and Tangub City.

From the Visayas, contingents from Tacloban City, Dumaguete City, Ormoc City, Bayawan, Bais and Siquijor will compete, as well as the Province of Masbate in Luzon.

The number of out-of-town contingents is higher this time compared to the previous Sinulog, which saw only nine contingents competing.

Organizers expect a total of 50 contingents to participate in next month’s festivities.
