Thats the problem of the city right now , not enough setback intended for walkways and electric posts.. They should replace it with tall concrete posts and as much as possible wayay mulabang na wires..The surneco and the telecommunications company should have the initiative on this matters..:bash::bash::bash::bash:

true filino, if you just know the story behind bilbaos guggemheim museum in spain, it could inspire politicos and the people in our city to do the same..Bilbao was once the shipping capital of europe. Due to great competition from other cities, their main industry did not survive.. Thanx to the most beutiful and grandest museum made by Architect Frank Gehry, its just became the most celebrated city in Spain and earning 300 million annually just for tourism..If we can just do this in surigao? and why not dba!:)

in our current setting, imo, i think we need the investors.
first, for competition. where our local businessmen are encouraged to develop and upscale their products and services.
second, still for competition but on the level of competence of our local businessmen. sometimes threats to their businesses made them pour more efforts towards development... diverting into another market.
third, we need more capitalists. more capitalists, more businesses, alive city, more jobs, better quality of life.

WB report unfair, says Barbers family
by Surigao Today

Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Ace Barbers has expressed dismay over the alleged World Bank report that refers to his father, the late Robert Barbers, as the senator who “exerted his influence to further the collusive bid schemes” of contractors involved in anomalous practices in undertaking the international financial institution’s projects.

“It is very sad that my father who has been gone for more than three years now is being dragged into this mess. Remember that he was out of politics after the 2004 elections. If the report indeed exists, how can we, remaining members of the family, clear the name of our father if we cannot test the veracity of the allegations,” Barbers said.

Barbers stressed that if the World Bank will not make the report public, at least “they should have the decency to furnish us copies and allow us to pose queries on the allegations leveled against our father who cannot anymore defend himself.”

Bill of rights

“This is most unfair,” Barbers said in a press statement.

Barbers said the World Bank report indicted his deceased father and the others before the “bar of public opinion by somebody who doesn’t want to be known.”

“Even in our Bill of Rights which we copied from the Americans, the same people who dominate the World Bank, the accused is given the right to cross-examine the witnesses against him,” he stressed.

But this right, Barbers said, was not even accorded them as the World Bank failed to give them a chance to defend themselves.

To avoid further controversies, Barbers suggested that the World Bank and other similar entities, which have projects in the Philippines, should pick their own contractors to undertake the projects they bankroll.

“I am sure that the Filipino people will welcome this suggestion as it will end corruption, in their projects at least,” Barbers said. (inquirer.net)

Surigao del Norte's Website is now upgraded ug paspas na sija

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj246/lagat_bucket/header_short.jpg

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SURIGAO DEL NORTE

Surigao del Norte is strategically located at the Northeastern part of Mindanao. It is bounded on the North and East by the Pacific Ocean, on the South by the Provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur and on the West by the Surigao Strait. It is one of the five (5) provinces in the Caraga Region.

The province is composed of twenty (20) municipalities, one (1) city and three hundred thirty five (335) barangays. It is politically divided into two congressional districts. District I comprises the islands of Siargao and Bucas Grande which has 9 municipalities, namely: Burgos, Dapa, Del Carmen, General Luna, Pilar, San Benito, San Isidro, Sta. Monica, and Socorro. District II includes Surigao City, the provincial capital, and the eleven (11) municipalities, namely: Alegria, Bacuag, Claver, Gigaquit, Mainit, Malimono, Placer, San Francisco, Sison, Tagana-an and Tubod.

It has a total land area of 201,710 hectares with the mainland occupying 138,914 hectares, and Siargao Island with 62,796 hectares The biggest land area is Claver (31,534 hectares or 11.18%) and . Burgos, on the other hand, has the smallest area with 1,948 hectares equivalent to 1.40% of the provincial land area. The land area of the province is about 14.77% of the total land area of Region XIII (19,555.18 sq. km.), 2.0% of the 10.31% total land area of Mindanao (101,999 sq. km.) and represents 0.67% of the total land area of the Philippines (300,000 sq. km.).

Per 2000 NSO Survey, the province’s total population is 481,416 or an increase of 8.86% from the 1995 survey of 442,203 with an annual average growth rate of 1.71%. Household population correspondingly increased by 10.74% during the 1995-2000 period from 83,658 in 1995 to 92,645 households in 2000. Population density has increased also from 161 persons per square kilometer in 1995 to 175 in 2000.

The province is endowed with abundant natural resources. One of the major resources are the metallic and non-metallic deposits. Metallic reserves registered a total of 279,230,352 metric tons (MT). Nickel Silicate Ore posted a 62.26% share of the total reserves or 173,842,141 MT, while Gold and Copper have a deposit of 102,064,931 MT, chromite has 1,224,495 MT and Iron Ore has 2,098,785 MT. For the non-metallic, limestone has 230,403,489 metric tons, and silica deposits has 148,126,467 metric tons.

For mineral production, a total of 501,000 DMT was noted for Nickel Silicate Ore with a corresponding value of P935,915,532. These products are exported to Japan and Australia with a corresponding sales of P2,589,985 for 1,322,266.13 DMT of Nickel Silicate Ore. Chromite concentrate has only 9,549 DMT with a value of P22,696,292.28 which are exported to China.

On the other hand, Silica, Clinker and Limestone has a total production of 445,516 MT with a total value of P9,723,498. These products are used mainly as raw materials for cement.

Considered an excellent fishing area, its seawaters covering 12,540 square miles are abundant with different species of fish. It is along the tuna route. An increasing trend was noted on fish catch volume on commercial, municipal marine, inland and aqua culture which totaled to 53,351.19 metric tons in 2006 as compared to 52,971.47 metric tons in 2005.

It has a fertile agricultural land of 152,035 hectares and producing annually 78,386 metric tons of rice, 88.667.14 metric tons of coconut, 1,261 MT of corn, 9,057.30 MT of banana, 3,280 MT of vegetables, 5,764 MT of fruits and 38,158 MT of root crops. Records in year 2007 for livestock and poultry population showed there were 22,126 carabaos, 87,308 pigs, 2,078 cattles, 5,761 goats, 411,345 chicken and 33,994 ducks.

The province has natural tourist attractions like long stretches of white sand beaches, fantastic rock formations, mysterious caves, vast mangrove forests and tall surf waves and man-made tourist areas which make it an important tourist destination. There were 115,571 tourist arrivals recorded for the year 2006. An increase of 87.30% was noted compared to tourist arrivals in 2005 of 87,450 tourists. Of this, 92.63% were domestic and 7.37% foreigners.

The volume of imports has drastically increased of 4.9% or 43,747.03 metric tons in 2005 to 49,656 metric tons in year 2006. However, the value has registered an increase of 21.14% or from P624,809,754 in 2005 to P756,901,561 in 2006.

On export, the volume has reached to 5,020,971 metric tons with a corresponding value of US$ 121,077,472.20. The Lateritic Ore was the top earner for the year 2006 and its shipment reached 4,135,974 metric tons valued at US$73,406,874.30.

In the year 2006, the province income was P462,905,663.19 an increase by 20% as against the previous year of P385,517,468.67. This was generated from the share on IRA, Local Taxes, Permit and Licenses, Service and Business Income and surplus incurred from previous year.

However, in spite of all these potentials for development, the province has been left out from the main stream of development growth occurring in other provinces in Mindanao.

The quality of life has not changed much. Although family income improved in the past years but the increase seemed negligible considering the inflation and the population increase.

last last year pa, i always have this conversation with a friend in manila working with jbic and adb. we always talk of the corruption going on, esp in dpwh, involving fg.

as i said, i believe world bank is saying the truth.
jbic did not bother to conduct investigation regarding the allegations of the whistle blowers. cause i think japs are more interested in lending rather than to bother on who will benefit with the loans. haha
