what is being posted in this furom is true. it is the real situation and when you travel to the city it is what you will see. the pictures says everything and you can feel the clealiness of its environment. walang hidden agenda, walang tinatago, walang pinipiling angle to cover up something para di makita sa picture.
filino September 6th, 2007, 03:33 PM hi guyz, this afternoon I went to blvd, i was amazed with the fast change of our seaport. the expansion of surigao seaport is ongoing and hopefully i will be finished later this year or early next year. i thought dili na mag expand kay dako naman ang ato pier but im glad kay gdak-an pa gajud. ingon nila dapat gajud daw dak-an to accomodate more cargo & passenger ships. anyway, as i walked along the boulevard, pas pas sad ang construction sa huge SRBC restaurant. the said restaurant is part of the soon to rise SRBC CITY Mall giuna lang siya pag construct. sad to say i failed to take even a single pic coz na lobat ko.
FYI: Surigao City Blvd is a six lane road. mura siya ug north luzon expressway lapad kaayo ang dalan although not fully finished maybe kulang pa sa budget.

hmmm...whats with the hidden agenda?...Inday...those pictures that you saw in Butuan thread are not mine..allof them are just lifted from other site or forums and photosites...
In every city...there are nice spots...cleanspots and not so developed poor spots....but Benchmarking YOUR description AGAINST to your own posted photos of Surigao.....it seems those pictures of yours are giving those hyped "world class" term of yours a big injustice....
its so easy to go around your town from san nicolas, sarvida, kaimo, borromeo etc streets...I have been a frequent visitor to your town during my tour of work...
and to base your words of "world class" is a big balooney....
I find the food there nice and cheap...especially seafood...the daytimes are relaxed and laidback...kind of relaxing though...but if you stay in the city for 2days.....everything turns to boredom...save if you go to siargao...

hahahaha wala na ang restaurant kay nag abang lang to sila sa PPA. they were forced to vacate the area for the expansion sa port. for now, the city seaport expansion is ongoing. dont know when matapos but i guess later this year or early nxt year pa. the mining industry in caraga is booming more particularly in surigao provinces maybe thats the reason why theres a need na for the expansion of the city seaport to cater s growing "clients".
bitaw bob let peace reign in this furom ug sa butuan. mas nindot ug magkasinabot man gud ta.

yup..but I would say booooo to our Gov. Barbers and Cong. Glenda Ecleo...for not being able to facilitate very well the entry of Jinchuan Nickel which could have taken over Philnico...SAYANG kaayo ang multi billion DOLLARs ha nga nawala because of this failed deal...pastilan daghan tana mga CARAGA mabulahan..
regarding that port....is there any way SuperCat will resume their service to Cebu..? nalugi man daw sila kaniadto mao they ceased operating to Surigao..

filino September 7th, 2007, 05:01 AM let me share with you my travel at sohoton cove, at bucas grande island, surigao. it is an hour away from the city thru a "lantsa". so far, this is the best place i've ever seen. when i visited siargao before a long time ago i thought that was already the best but if you want a total adventure and willing to "gapang gapang" sa mga cave within a cave aside from the white sand beaches they could offer then this is the best place for you. check it out:
this is the grand entrance of sohoton cove:

dapat tang tangon na mga makeshift stores dinha na mga karaoke bars and beer houses...they can obstruct the beautiful view of the surigao straight...
thats a good move nga de molish na sila...

WOW nice building... Green Bank i think the owner is Andaya or Indaya... which is the main branch/headquarter is in Butuan. They are expanded such huge developement. I think they will open up soon in CEBU and later in Manila. Pero takot akong mag open ng account sa Green bank while I'm here abroad... I dont know if meron silang OFW remitances. My Mom supposed to open an account at GReen bank but buti nalang napigilan ko. Pero ndi ko sinisiraan ung local banks natin ha... maganda din naman ang services nila... yon nga lang for me na working very far from Philippines prefer to open in commecial bank like banco de oro, metro bank and PCI... pero mas maganda pa din ang banco de oro at metro bank... ung account ko sa PCI though na stagnant minsan ko lang hinuhulugan.. hahahaha... but for the business its should go straight to banco de oro... hahahaha promotional to ha...
I also have comments while waiting for multicabs going to terminal... daghan kaayo tricycle samok kaayo.. I hope they will minimize it parang color coding ba.. like in Butuan lahat ng trcycle color red or blue.. or what ever... kse sobrang dami na cguro ng tricycle jan...

Suko man ang SURIGAO nga ang BUTUAN is a first class & highly URBANIZED CITY...
coz walay nasuko nga highly urbanized city ang butuan. if i remember, that certain luisame question only on clean and green. bob explained already that each place has its own weaknesses and assets which is indeed true. unfortunately butuan's is a little weak in that aspect right? but i'm sure your local government is doing some action on that regard, just like surigao the local government also is doing there job on other aspects nga weak sila.
again may peace stays in this furom forever and lets just promote our region together.
filino September 8th, 2007, 04:26 AM ATTN:
last evening mayor pons cassura announced that next week is the formal announcement for the Reopenning of Philnico Industrial Mining Corp located at Nonoc Island, Surigao City. as we all knew, a negotiations failed between the government and with the first investors from china who would have invest billions of pesos for the reopenning of such mining company. today, a new investors came and "BINGO" next week is the formal announcement of its reopenning as what mayor casurra said last night.
FYI:
* Nonoc Island is the host of world biggest nickel deposits.
* The entire Nonoc Island was declared as Special Economic Zone for
Heavy Inustries and PHILNICO as the first locator.
* Nonoc Island has its own airport & seaport.

Pero the demand is still there... Wala kaayo domestic cargo ang Nasipit, except for lumper and saging. Pero international cargo, large volume of palm oil from agusan sur ang in eexport nila.... Going steady ang nasipit. The last time i arrived in Butuan, ang Nasipit Port, nindot na kaayo.. they added features sa labas ng terminal, parang covered walk with a cool design. parang ayala terminal kung nakaadto ka cebu (naka adto ba ka?)

Exactly, for a city that is over 20 years older than Surigao, what a sad thing that Butuan is way behind Cagayan de Oro which became a city the same year, 1950. So there, talking about equals, Butuan is nothing compared to Cagayan de Oro today which became a city the same year. So you can shut up now. Bisaya-on ko pa ba para maintindihan mo?

Pre, its so happen na regional center ang Cagayan de Oro before and Butuan is part of the region X. Talagang Hari dati ang Cagayan de Oro... So now Butuan is a regional center of Caraga so the expections of developments goes to Butuan itself. We dont compare city of CDO kay tsada kaayo ang pamalakad sa ilang local government. Im not saying na bad ang govt of Butuan. The reason behind is that snail ang pace of development and it was controlled by the regional development which is didto na hansak sa CDO. When it comes to Butuan and Surigao syempre may kunting agwat kse mas malaki ang City ng Butuan when it comes to land area. Again we are not comparing about CDO kay region X sila. So its time now for Surigao and Agusan (CARAGA). slowly but surely. Don't make any pain in the ass kay na peace na ra ba ang thread... gituldukan ni FILINO... PEACE BROTHER....

same year they became cities..but Butuan had just been a regional capital/center for a single decade....while CDO has been an administrave regional capital (where Butuan and rest of CARAGA previously belong) for years...a recipent of several regional development programs like the RCDP (Regional Cities development Project) under the Marcos and Cory administrations...
CDO growth is phenomenal....all the evidences are there...no questions asked
and the issue of Butuan-CDO equality is NOT the point of ISSUE here in the forum...unless if you have a hidden agenda of instigating a green issue....which our matured and friendly CDO forumers will NOT buy...

as explain by...bob...its true that BXU @ CDO became acity the same YEAR BUT IT ALSO VERY TRUE THAT during those time proirity project were accorded to CDO hence the they are the regional center......even though BXU experiencing a boom during 60 and 70 due to its logging industry... not a single office were put in the city to complement its economic activites....during those time also national govt...had no clear program for environment protection....if there were its very lax....then time comes...forest were denuded in...BXU main economic driver is slowly deminishing....

yes it is true. kulang gyud sa promotion, it is because surigao city now is giving more attention to its mining industry. how i wish nga they give equal priorities on both industry. but somehow, bright man gud pud ang prospect sa mining industry, and i think what the city government wants is the direct flow of revenue coming from those mining companies. it is a fact na dagko gyud ang mga taxes nga ma generate with this kind of industry kay tinibo man ang bayad compared to tourism nga gradual ang revenues but it will stay for long as long as the facilities were properly cared of while mining has negative impacts and limited lang ang mining life.
imagine mayor cassura announced that if the reoperation of phinico mine will finally materialized surigao city is the wealthiest city in caraga.

"Butuanons.. ayaw na ninyo awaya ang surigao.. di nato sila ka level. mas taas pa ta" yes it is true dili ta ka level. and i dont care.... as far as i knew we are just a small city not highly urbanized but our projects are comparable to them. we may dont have an international port but our PPA clients came from different countries most particularly in asia. why? simply bec. we are just simply irresistable.... need sources? visit our PPA office and ask them.....

sir, wait for the time when i post those pix, ok!!! i must accept and said it clearly on some of my post na 6 lanes siya all in all. three lanes in each side, but, on the other side mura siya ug two lane lang bec. na putol ang trabaho sa blvd bec. of the squatters during that time who asked for extension not until this sept. 17 or 27 na demilison na gyud sila. so after that, movements for the development in that area will continue.

Ex!lE September 9th, 2007, 07:19 AM Philex, partner to spend $ 1 B in project (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20070909102510.html)
Philex and subsidiary Philex Gold expect to spend some $ 750 million to $ 1 billion with partner Anglo American Plc to develop the Boyongan coppergold deposit once mining the Surigao property is deemed to be feasible.
Philex Chairman Walter Brown said Anglo American is currently conducting the pre-feasibility study in Boyongan which is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year and they will then decide whether to proceed to an actual feasibility study of the project.
He added that the feasibility study will cost about $ 50 million and will be spent by Anglo American which has an option to increase its stake in the project to 80 percent if it has been deemed viable.
It will take about one year to complete a feasibility study and about 20 months to get operations onstream including the development of the mine, ore mill, storage facilities, and loading facilities.
Brown said the project will be funded partly by equity from Philex and Anglo American as well as by various forms of debt.
He noted that given favorable results to date from the pre-feasibility studies undertaken by joint venture partner Anglo American in Boyongan, there is strong indication, if the results continue to come in as expected, that this project may be on stream before the end of Philex’s Padcal mine life.
"We are programming the economic life of our Padcal operations to be extended by three years from our previous plan to close in 2011 to 2014," said Brown adding that this is the result of a careful review of their ore reserves, anticipated production capability and attendant costs, and after considering conservative projections of metal prices.
He said Philex is accelerating the pace of its exploration activities in the vicinity of Padcal where they are actively exploring a gold prospect immediately adjacent to the current workings. Philex is also preparing to drill potential copper deposits proximate to the mine.
Philex reported produced coppert, gold and silved with an estimated gross value of P959 million, based on provisional metal prices, in the month of August, 2007.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) yesterday, Brown said 726,570 dry metric tons of disseminated copper-gold ore were delivered by its mine and treated at the Banget flotation facilities.
Brown said this produced 6,527 dry metric tons of copper concentrates averaging 25.61 percent copper, 56.16 grams of gold per DMT, and 53.24 grams of silver per DMT.
These concentrates yielded an equivalent metal content of 1.67 million kilograms of copper, 372,114 grams of gold and 347,805 grams of silver.
Philex more than doubled its net income for the first seven months of the year to P3.1 billion from P1.4 billion in the same period in 2006 due to higher metal prices and more metals sold.
"High metal prices coupled with higher mine production resulted (in) the company’s strong financial standing for the sevenmonth period. We are optimistic that this trend will continue until the end of the year," said Brown.
Brown added that, because of the company’s robust financial performance, Philex’s earnings reached P1.036 per share from only P0.471 per share in the same period last year.
"We will continue to look (for) ways to increase the value (of our shares for) our shareholders. Philex is pursuing other mining exploration projects not only in the country, but in the other parts of the world as well," he said.

filino September 13th, 2007, 08:43 AM I just read your posts guys... react lang ko gamay.
filino (or kung kinsa man ka), When i went to surigao, the city's boulevard is not 3 lane blvd... 3 lane hinuon xa. gigamit ang outermost lane as a parking area. and dili xa lapad as i've noticed. i've been to the big cities na already. makitid lang talaga ang blvd ninyo... but it's not a bad thing... na acomodate man sa kinahanglan sa city... maybe in the future it will widened... kung ma dako na ang surigao city.
i have already posted the surigao city blvd. full development of the said blvd will now continue as the demolition will push through this month. this blvd will take you up to Lipata Hills, where the famous Barbers Mansion, Lipata Ferry Terminal & the soon to open Almont Resort located.

philbern September 13th, 2007, 09:28 AM Indeed. We are currently doing feasibility studies to build a high end boutique hotel in Lipata hills that would tie up with a 15 acre beach resort currently under negotiation in an island across the city. Surigao will soon have a first rate hotel/resort in 5 years. Hopefully. the politicos in Surigao will not give us a hard time considering the city's history of turning down big businesses like Gaisano, et al to patronize local businessmen who haven't done much for the city. :)

i always heared that, i thought it was just all rumors and baseless but too bad, thats the reason why surigao city is moving slowly. but what i like this city is that they are not competing with their level or category, they are competing with the bigger instead.
philbern September 15th, 2007, 04:37 AM ^^ Back in the early 80's, influencial members of the Surigao Chinese Chamber of Commerce blocked Gaisano from establishing a department store/supermarket in the city fearing that their customers will be usurped by the chain. The same group of people cyclically burned their losing businesses to obtain insurance money, taking advantage of inept investigative skills by the city's fire marshalls.
The city is suffering from political anemia- elected officials does not have enough red blood to prove their worth. There is no binding vision to make the city continually progressive. Rather they thrive on occasional spurts after an investor-activated CPR e.g. the revival of the Nonoc Nickel Mines. Shipping and airline companies flounder because city and provincial officials and their extended families and friends always want a free ride.
ritche September 15th, 2007, 07:03 AM A friend who's working for Robinsons informed me that when they made the feasibility study for Robinsons here three years ago, they also made a similar study for Surigao. In fact, my friend presented to me a video about Surigao City. In their study they found out that Surigao is capable of supporting a hypermart such as a Big R or SM supercenter (about 25,000-35,000 sqms mall size).

ritche September 17th, 2007, 06:03 AM As far as I know there'll be only one Robinsons mall to be built in Mindanao until 2012, and that is in GenSan. For SM, there'll be none for Mindanao until 2010. I don't know but I guess you should fight more to have these big ticket investments in your localites (since you could actually support investments of this magnitude). Better yet, create an enviroment conducive to attracting these businesses such as detaching yourself from the Mindanao stigma, create a vibrant academic life to stimulate investments in the ICT sector, and aggressively promote sectors in the city which are already thriving such as your tourism industry.

yeah, too bad, the national government has no enough capability to extract it. anyway the reopnning of PHILNICO nickel mine is now working, once it is materialized, surigao city will be caraga's wealthiest city and one in mindanao. for sure this will change surigao city in an instant. add to that, tourism is also waiting for its full development. hopefully the local government could find ways on how to use its full tourism potentials.

u have the fact and the logical reason. So sad to hear that. But I find it amusing somehow and a big blow to us Filipino that our national gov't has been in the oil venture in Equatorial Guinea, Africa. This only shows that our national gov't has the capability somehow. :ohno:
Likewise i have two minds regarding the intentions of the foreign investors out there.

well, according to them, theres no modern equipment yet invented up to this moment in the world to extract those mineral resources. too bad, this could be our answers to the world most particularly those middle eastern countries/oil rich countries. raising the status of every Filipino or the whole Philippines economically is always been our ultimate dream.

Billabong Announces New Sponsorship Of ‘Cloud 9’ Invitational - Philippines Surfing Event
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2007 : - - Gold Coast -- Surf company Billabong announced that in 2007 it will secure sponsorship of the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational at the island jewel of Siargao, Philippines in September. The three-year deal ensures that Billabong has naming rights sponsorship of the Philippine’s biggest surfing event until 2009.
Siargao’s ‘Cloud 9’, a powerful hollow right-hander, will provide an idyllic setting for the who’s who of world surfing, contestants coming from as far a field as Australia, Bali, Tahiti, Hawaii, Japan and the USA. Due to Siargao’s proximity to the Philippines, big swells from the Pacific Ocean roll in from the second deepest stretch of water in the world to create flawless hollow barrelling waves.
Boasting US$20,000 in prize money, the exclusive invitational event offers a world-class field of 48 invited surfers a chance to compete at one of Asia’s hottest surfing destinations. Billabong General Manager South East Asia, Chris James, said sponsorship of the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational is a continued commitment to promoting the sport of surfing throughout the region.
“Cloud 9 is one of the most perfect right hand reef breaks in the world,” said James. “To invite 48 tube riding specialists to a wave of this calibre has serious potential to bring world class surfing to South East Asia.”
Similarly, Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace S. Barbers said, “The Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte is very pleased with Billabong’s sponsorship of this year’s international surfing competition. Surfing is the most awaited sports tourism activity in the province. Started in 1995, it has now evolved into a world-class and widely contested event. We are looking forward to a successful tournament this year.”
The 2007 line-up includes high profile surfers such as Mark Matthews (Maroubra, NSW, AUS), Jamie O’Brien (Oahu, HAW), Manoa Drollet (Tahiti), Dylan Longbottom (Gold Coast, AUS), Makua Rothman (Oahu, HAW), Ryan Augenstein (California, USA), Luke Dorrington (Gold Coast, AUS) and Asher Pacey (Gold Coast, AUS).
The seven-day tournament will run from Monday September 24th to Sunday September 30th. The opening ceremony will be staged on Monday 24th with competition commencing that day. The tournament contest site is Siargao Islands ‘Cloud 9’, a powerful hollow right-hander that has been hailed as one of the ten best waves in the world and has been frequently compared to the renowned surf of Hawaii and Indonesia.
The Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational is proudly supported by the Provincial Government of Surigao Del Norte with Support from Smart Communications, San Miguel, The Department of Tourism Philippines, Asian Spirit and Coca Cola.

The exclusive invitational event, running from Sept 24-30 and boasting US 20,000 in prize money, offers a world-class field of 48 invited surfers a chance to compete at one of Asia’s hottest surfing destinations.
Siargao Island; a jungle-drenched jewel with its virgin beaches and warm clear waters is set to transform as surfers from Australia, Hawaii, Bali, Japan and the USA test-their-mettle against the powerful hollow right-hander of ‘Cloud 9’.
Premier up-and-coming Australian surfers including 2006 Australasian Junior champion Wade Goodall (Caloundra, QLD), World Qualifying Series (WQS) competitor Luke Dorrington (Snapper Rocks, QLD) and former U/18 Australian Grommet champion Nick Vasicek (Snapper Rocks, QLD) along with free-surfing phenomenon Ry Craike (Kalbarri, WA), renowned big wave charger Mark Matthews (Maroubra, NSW), Billabong Pro Tahiti Trials runner-up Anthony Walsh (Ballina, NSW) and defending event champion Ryan Hipwood (Mermaid Beach, QLD) are all confirmed starters in the Philippine’s biggest surfing event.
“I haven’t been to Cloud 9 before but from what I have seen and been told it is one of the most insane waves in the world“ said Goodall. “I have been chasing World Qualifying Series (WQS) points all year and sometimes you have to surf in some fairly average conditions.
“To be invited to the Philippines for this event, with only 47 other guys is going to be a bit of a treat, I’m really looking forward to it.”
Bolstering to the tournament’s already premier line-up of surfers is the inclusion of Hawaiian chargers; Pipeline Master Jamie O’Brien (Oahu), North Shore local Mikala Jones (Oahu) and Pipeline kingpin Makua Rothman (Oahu).
Other Hawaiians confirmed to compete include Jason Shibata (Oahu), Kalani Chapman (Oahu) and Rico Jimenez (Oahu).
Renowned Balinese surfers Wayan ‘Kopling’ Wirtima, Made ‘Raditya’ Rhondi, Rahtu Suargita, Wayan “Betet” Merta, Ketut Juliarta and Tipi Jabrik will also travel to the neighbouring Philippines to contest the specialty event and will no doubt push the performance levels of the international field.
Due to Siargao’s proximity to the Philippines, big swells from the Pacific Ocean roll in from the second deepest stretch of water in the world to create flawless hollow barrelling waves.
The seven-day tournament will run from Monday September 24th to Sunday September 30th. The opening ceremony will be staged on Monday 24th with competition commencing that day.
The tournament contest site is Siargao Island’s ‘Cloud 9’, a powerful hollow right-hander that has been hailed as one of the ten best waves in the world and has been frequently compared to the renowned surf of Hawaii and Indonesia.
The Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational is proudly supported by the Provincial Government of Surigao Del Norte with Support from Smart Communications, San Miguel, The Department of Tourism Philippines, Asian Spirit and Coca Cola.

filino September 24th, 2007, 10:07 AM Chinese investors want to revive Nonoc
Published By Manila Times
September 17, 2007 (Edited by surigaocity.gov.ph, original transcript can be found here.)
Private investors from China have shown interest to operate the Nonoc nickel mines and pour in more funds. This was disclosed by Philippine Nickel Corp. (Philnico) president Ernesto Narvaez in his recent visit in the Surigao City. Mayor Alfonso Casurra, on the other hand, is committed to protect Surigao's marine life and ecosystems in the wake of opening up anew its mining sector to foreign and local investments.
The seaport city of Caraga region, particularly Nonoc Island, which is a few minutes motorboat ride from mainland Surigao, is home to one of the world’s biggest nickel deposits, next only to Dinagat Island where huge deposits of platinum, nickel and chromite sit.
Narvaez announced that a new group of investors from China are ready to sign a contract with Philnico to rehabilitate the Nonoc mines before October this year. The Nonoc mines, one of the region’s biggest nickel mines in the late 60’s up to the early 80’s, was closed after declaring bankruptcy due to labor problems that resulted to unpaid debts.
The government, through Asset Privatization Trust, took over Nonoc Island’s nickel mining assets including its debts and taxes due until private mining firm Philnico took over its control.
Meanwhile, Casurra said development of the Nonoc nickel mines is only a short-term priority for the city’s economic agenda, particularly in revenue and job generation.
“We do not rely solely on our mining potentials as means for our medium- and long-term economic plan. We are now trying to tap potentials for agri-business, particularly on our local livestock industry and eco-tourism, such as developing Surigao’s best dive sites,” Casurra said.

The Philippine Star
The massive waves off Siargao island in Surigao del Norte take global limelight anew as the best surfers from nine countries compete in the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational starting Monday.
At least 40 surfers are competing for the top prize of $20,000 and the Siargao Surfing Cup, which is presented for the first time by surfing giant Billabong Australia.
Gerry Deagan, event coordinator, said this year’s competition is bigger with "more participants, more talents and more money."
Most of the participants in the event, which started in 1996, came from Australia. There are four Japanese and five Indonesians. Others came from the US, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and France.
Organizers said at least 12 local surfers are also giving their best shot at the title. Two of them – Dionisio Espejon and Carlito Nogalo – have been recognized as early title favorites.
"I was surprised by the level of Filipino surfers – very impressive," said Indonesian Kopling Wirtama during a press conference in Manila. "But they should go to other places and travel so their competence is not limited to home surf site."
The event, part of the world qualifying series, is co-presented by Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), San Miguel Corp., Smart Communications, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils., Asian Spirit and Montenegro Lines.
PTA general manager Robert Dean Barbers said the event is important in promoting Siargao as one of the best surfing sites in the world. Edu Punay

filino September 28th, 2007, 09:35 AM Surigaocity.gov.ph steps up in PWA semis
September 28, 2007
The official Web site of the City Government of Surigao, surigaocity.gov.ph, is officially competing for the Best eLGU City Web Site in the prestigious 10th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) after Media G8way Corp., the event organizers of the PWA, released Thursday the official list of Web sites qualified for the pre-finals round of the PWA. Five other LGU Web sites will be contending for the title, namely: Balanga City (cityofbalanga.gov.ph), Lucena City (mylucena.com), Marikina City (marikina.gov.ph), Ormoc City (ormoc.gov.ph), and Tagum City (tagumcity.gov.ph).
surigaocity.gov.ph underwent a general design overhaul late last year after the City Computerization Committee created the Management Information Team, the special information technology (IT) technical working group of the City of Surigao. The old design of the Web site was based on the National Computer Center (NCC)-made template. The site was soft-lauched in April of this year and, from thereon, served as the Internet window of the city to the local community and Suriganons abroad.
The city Web site not only offers basic information, as it also served as a one-stop portal for people who want fast access to information related to the city, such as legislated ordinances, application forms for permits, a directory of offices and business establishments and a list of procurement needs of the city government. Additinally, a community forum where Suriganons from all walks of life can discuss current issues and virtually all topics under the sun. A section was also produced exclusively for business investors.
The eLGU category was added to the roster of categories in the PWA by Media G8way in close coordination with the NCC to pay tribute to local government units that use the power of the Internet and the World Wide Web in delivering services and information in electronic format to its respective constituents and stakeholders like procedures on life events, electronic procurement of goods and services, and information on business investment and tourism.
One feature of the PWA is people can vote for the Web sites that they think deserved to be awarded. As such, Surigaonons can vote for surigaocity.gov.ph online or through cellular phones using text messaging. Once surigaocity.gov.ph surpasses the semi-final round, it will step up to the finals round where only five Web sites will be shortlisted. Winners of the 10th PWA will be announced on November 23, 2007, at Promenade, Greenhills, San Juan City, Metro Manila.

Ex!lE October 4th, 2007, 02:17 AM Surfing boosts Surigao Norte eco-tourism
SURIGAO CITY — Surfing caught world attention of a town of Surigao del Norte, a government official said yesterday.
"This giggling sport has caught domestic and international attention as the area is very much viable for international surfing competition," said Surigao del Norte Rep. Francisco T. Matugas.
Matugas also said the surfing in General Luna town has given a big boost to the efforts of the towns on Siargao Island, to promote the island as a surfing paradise in Asia.
"This sport and paradise scene in the upper most island in this province have contributed a big income to the local coffers," Matugas said.
The former governor and incumbent representative in the Lower House of this Pacific Ocean-facing province cited the on going 13th Siargao International Surfing Competition dubbed as "1st Billabong Cloud 9 International Competition" in General Luna town.
The international surfing competition started on Sept. 24 and ended on Sept. 29, this year.
At least 45 surfing enthusiasts from different parts of the globe vied for honors in competition.
Australian surfer Wade Goodall emerged as the champion of the surfing contest, toppling defending champion Ryan Hipwood of Mermaid Beach, Queensland, Australia.
Sunshine Coast Australian surfing star Goodall received the top prize of $ 7,500 which was presented for the first time by surfing renowned Billabong, a surfing firm based in Australia, during the culmination ceremony which was attended by local and regional officials and a big crowd of domestic and international enthusiasts.
Other winners included Australian Nick Vasicek who was 1st runner-up; 2nd runner-up was Dave Reardon Smith of Australia, and 3rd runner-up was Makua Rothman of Hawaii.
The last leg of the competition was also witnessed by presidential daughter Luli Macapagal Arroyo.
The island of Siargao, with its good waves and white-sand beaches, served as the venue of the series of surfing competitions in the past years.
These were held on the initiative of the provincial government of Surigao del Norte and the Department of Tourism. (Mike Crismundo)

Seriously, how was the word "Bonok-Bonok" derived?
What's the difference?
A true-blooded Surigaonon never calls himself a Surigueńo. That is an outright insult to the Surigaonon's heritage and language. There's no such word as Surigueńo.
As for Bonok-Bonok, it has something to do with fertility and good harvest. It is also used to describe positively the rainy season and how it affects the harvest. Thus, at present, it means "abundance" or "abundant". The adjective is used mainly to describe "rain" and "harvest".
Example:
Nagsugod na pagbonok-bonok [nan tig-uyan] kuman!
This refers to the start of the rainy season. The tone of the sentence should be that of "excitement" in expectation of a good harvest ahead. Note that in the sentence, there's no need to include the word "uyan" (rain) or "tig-uyan" (rainy season) because bonok-bonok in itself already connotes rain or the rainy season.
Another word to describe rain is "bundak" but this connotes something heavier than the "bonok". "Bundak" is mostly used to describe sudden but short heavy rain.

Farirah October 12th, 2007, 06:02 AM Nickel firm to start production in 2008

CANADIAN MINERAL exploration firm Mindoro Resources Ltd. announced it has significantly increased its target area for nickel production in its Agata project in the Surigao mining district following results from latest drilling samples.
Mindoro Resources said it now expects to mine over a period of three to five years between 50 and 60 wet metric tons a year of nickel laterite in the Agata project.
The company had initially defined an area that was expected to yield ores at a rate of 500,000 to 700,000 WMT a year.
“As a result of the encouraging drill results to date, as well as geological mapping of the extent of the northern laterite and the current high demand and prices for nickel and ferro-nickel feedstock, [we are] now evaluating the potential of the project, and enhanced value options via on-site or local processing alternatives,” the firm said.
The newly defined exploration area includes 30 million to 35 million WMT of ores at a grade of 0.9 to 1.1 percent nickel and 40 to 44 percent iron-grades, which the firm said exceeded current requirements in the Asia-Pacific region for direct shipping grade ferro-nickel feedstock that is used to produce nickel-containing pig iron.
Also, the new exploration target includes mineralization with 20 million to 25 million WMT of ores at a grade of 1-1.4 percent nickel and 8-10 percent iron.
The target area covers 340 hectares where a total of over 90 drill holes have been completed so far.
Also, the company said the revised exploration target did not include areas where low-grade but commercially potential nickel ores were present.
Mindoro Resources said the new target would form the basis for evaluating several attractive value-added processing options, including constructing a local blast or electric furnace for nickel pig iron production.

filino October 23rd, 2007, 02:12 AM Carrera Habagat spins off today
By Harvey Entendez Diaz with feeds from Sun.Star Cebu
October 23, 2007
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7915/carrera2007oz1.jpg
This year's Carrera Habagat adventure race, participated by fifteen teams from all over the country, starts today at the City Gymansium of Surigao. Their mission: to traverse two islands in Surigao del Norte--Siargao and Bucas Grande.
"Triathlon on steroids."¯This was how race director Jason Garrido described what is to be expected from this year's Carrera Habagat, dubbed the Siargao-Bucas Grande Traverse, which starts today and ends on October 26 at General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
"This is like triathlon on steroids--bike, run and swim--magnified to extreme levels," Garrido said during the event's press conference held on October 10 at the Outpost Restaurant in Cebu City.
Garrido added that Carrera is the oldest adventure race in Asia. There is another adventure race in Hong Kong but it is a stage race, finishing on a daily basis and starting again the following day.
On the other hand, the Carrera is a non-stop race and racers will have to decide whether to take a rest in the evening or continue to race at will.
This year's Carrera will be the seventh staging of the country's "toughest" adventure race.
"This is the country's toughest adventure racing. A four-day non-stop multi-event race, which includes disciplines such as kayaking, rappelling and special section tasks which incorporates mind and indigenous games into the race," said event director Randy Su.
So tough is the race that most of those competing do not necessarily target to win but just to claim the bragging rights of having finished it.
The race goes back to Surigao, which was the venue for the race’s 2003 edition, dubbed the Pacific Island Respite.
As the title suggests, a part of the race will be in an island called Bucas Grande. "We always hold the races in small islands to also promote eco-tourism of these islands," Su added.
Set to protect its reign is Team Kalit, composed of Ronnie Moring, Nińo Abarquez, Rameses Urgel and Hazel Madamba.
Other than them, foreign nationals are also attracted to the challenge the race sets out in front of them. German national Jens Funk, a football player and triathlete, and British David Hariis, who competes in rugby and sailing, will team up with Filipinos, including mountain racer Merlita Arias, to test their mettle against other adventure racers and even against the challenge itself.
Other teams include Davao, Ibaan, Iligan, Iloilo, Conquer, Bayantel, Nomad, Dumaguete, Simon, Blood Red, TNF, KIKKM and UTA.
Each team is composed of six members--four will be racing, where one should be of the opposite sex. The two will serve as the support crew.
Habagat's Web site (http://www.habagat.com) will be showcasing a scoreboard displaying each team's status as they traverse the race map. Pictures of the team taken during their ordeal will also be featured.
The Carrera Habagat champion will receive P40,000 in cash, plus trophy, medals, gift packs, certificates and the most coveted bragging rights. The first placer will receive P30,000 and the second placer, P10,000.
Awards night will be held at Cabuntog Resort in General Luna. This year's Carrera Habagat is presented by Solar Sports, TWO, the Department of Tourism, the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte and the City Government of Surigao. The event is sponsored by San Mig Light, Graphic Star, Pitman Outdoor Clothing and The Outpost.

http://www.positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Cities_And_Towns_23/P120-M_road_improvement_project_in_Siargao_island_set.shtml
BUTUAN CITY, Oct. 23 (PNA) – Economic boom in the Pacific-Ocean facing upstream island in Surigao del Norte province is in the offing as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo approved the P120 million concreting of the seven- kilometer circumferential road in that surfing capital island, this was learned today.
Surigao del Norte solon 2nd District Rep. Francisco T. Matugas and 1st District Rep. Guillermo Romarate, Jr. expressed their heartfelt gratitude to President Arroyo for approving the mega-project in that island.
Last Wednesday, President Arroyo directed Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane to work hand-in-hand for the immediate ground works of the road project.
DPWH Regional Director Romeo S. Momo will personally supervise the construction of the said project.
“This is a big boost to the economic activities in the island, especially that mushrooming of tourists are coming because of its paradise scene and surfing activities,” said Rep. Matugas.
Mayor Peter “Boy” Ruaya of Dapa town also expressed gratitude to Mrs. Arroyo and Rep. Matugas for making Siargao island more progressive and developed.
Meanwhile, Rep. Matugas also reported on Friday that next year, a 100-hectare Mariculture Park, where a fish port and cold storage building are house, are also completely set to rise in Dapa town in that same island.
The big project, which can extend more economic livelihood to fisherfolks and Siargaonons and revenues to town coffers, is also being fully supported by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Rep. Matugas said.
The launching of the Mariculture Park will be scheduled next month.
He also said that the 500-meter runway extension in Sayak Airport at Del Carmen town and the P10 million airport terminal building will also be constructed early next year to accommodate more bigger aircrafts.
The P20 million airport parking area has already been completed, he added. (PNA)

filino October 23rd, 2007, 07:38 AM City Gov't turns over LAMP equipment to RoD, CENRO
By Harvey Entendez Diaz
Surigaocity.gov.ph Correspondent
October 11, 2007
The City Government had consigned office and computer equipment to the Office of the Register of Deeds (RoD) and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Wednesday at the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO). The equipment were required for the implementation of the initial phase of the Surigao Land Administration Management (SLAM), a land administration reform project aided by the Innovation Support Fund (ISF) of the Australian Government under the Philippines-Australia Land Administration and Management Project Phase 2 (LAMP2).
The equipment include 3 Kyocera photocopiers, 2 sets of Acer Aspire desktop computers, 2 HP inkjet printers and 3 HP flat-bed scanners.
The procurement of the equipment, composed of photocopiers, desktop computers, large-format printers and flat-bed scanners, was financed by the small grants fund of LAMP2 and will be utilized by the RoD and CENRO for indexing and collating of titles and cadastral records in the city.
Relatedly, ISF grant manager Ma. Lourdes T. Reyes had informed the City Government Monday, through a letter to the City Mayor, of the approval of the P7M grant needed for the full implementation of SLAM, which should be effected until December 2008. This news was favorably received by SLAM's project implementation unit head Diana Edera, the assistant CPDO coordinator, in her brief talk during Wednesday's turn-over ceremonies.
Vice Mayor Rico Salvador Sering (third from left), together with CPDO coordinator Elmer Tecson (second from right) and assistant CPDO coordinator Diana Edera (rightmost), hands over the LAMP equipment ownership to CENR officer Ulpiano Dasilao and LMS chief Gerry Bacud.
SLAM is the product of intensive land administration and management (LAM) workshops and seminars conducted by LAMP2 coordinators with the local government unit (LGU) proponents. Utilizing information and communications technology, SLAM would facilitate inter-agency coordination and convergence of information which fundamentally improve agency planning, management and service delivery within the city and, eventually, to the entire region. The agencies involved in SLAM include the RoD, CENRO, CPDO, the City Treasurer's Office and the City Assessor's Office.
ISF is a A$1.5M grant fund facility from the Australian Government for selected LGU-led LAM projects in coordination with local LAM sector agencies. ISF enables the LGUs to improve their LAM services by making new LAM innovations and processes available to them.
filino October 23rd, 2007, 08:13 AM 63rd Commemoration of Battle of Surigao Strait
October 24-26
Lipata Ferry Terminal, Surigao City
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/4885/300pxsurigaostraightyx9.jpg
The Battle of Surigao Strait is commemorated every October 24-25 of the year. US, Japanese and Philippine World War II veterans highlight the event. In some instances of the celebration, the Philippine Air Force showed amazing jet flight exhibition above Surigao Strait. For more information about the events that transpired during the Battle of Surigao Strait, please call the Surigao Tourism Office.
WIKIPEDIA has this article:
Battle of Surigao Strait
Nishimura's "Southern Force" consisted of the battleships Yamashiro and Fusō, the cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers. They were attacked by bombers on 24 October but sustained only minor damage.
Because of the strict radio silence imposed on the Central and Southern Forces, Nishimura was unable to synchronise his movements with Shima and Kurita. When he entered the narrow Surigao Strait at about 02:00 Shima was 25 miles (40 km) behind him, and Kurita was still in the Sibuyan Sea, several hours from the beaches at Leyte.
As they passed the cape of Panaon Island, they ran into a deadly trap set for them by the 7th Fleet Support Force. Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf had six battleships (Mississippi, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, California, and Pennsylvania, all but the Mississippi having been resurrected from Pearl Harbor), eight cruisers (heavy cruisers USS Louisville (Flagship), Portland, Minneapolis and HMAS Shropshire, light cruisers USS Denver, Columbia, Phoenix, Boise), 28 destroyers and 39 Patrol/Torpedo (PT) boats. To pass the strait and reach the landings, Nishimura would have to run the gauntlet of torpedoes from the PT boats, evade two groups of destroyers, proceed up the strait under the concentrated fire of six battleships in line across the far mouth of the strait, and then break through the screen of cruisers and destroyers.
At about 03:00, Fusō and the destroyers Asagumo, Yamagumo, and Mishishio were hit by torpedoes launched by the destroyer groups. Fusō broke in two but did not sink. Then at 03:16, USS West Virginia's radar picked up Nishimura's force at a range of 42,000 yards (38 km) and had achieved a firing solution at 30,000 yards (27 km). She tracked them as they approached in the pitch black night. At 03:52, West Virginia unleashed her eight 16 inch (406 mm) guns of the main battery at a range of 22,800 yards (21 km), striking the leading Japanese battleship with her first salvo. At 03:54, USS California and USS Tennessee opened fire. Radar fire control allowed these American battleships to hit targets from a distance at which the Japanese could not reply because of their inferior fire control systems. Yamashiro and Mogami were crippled by a combination of 14-inch (356 mm) and 16-inch (406 mm) armor-piercing shells. Shigure turned and fled but lost steering and stopped dead. Yamashiro sank at 04:19, with Nishimura on board. His surviving ships retreated west.
At 04:25, Shima's two cruisers (Nachi and Ashigara) and eight destroyers reached the battle. Seeing what they thought were the wrecks of both Nishimura's battleships (actually the two halves of Fusō), he ordered a retreat. His flagship, Nachi, collided with Mogami, flooding the latter's steering-room. Mogami fell behind in the retreat and was sunk by aircraft the next morning. The bow half of Fusō was destroyed by Louisville, and the stern half sank off Kanihaan Island. Of Nishimura's seven ships, only Shigure survived.
The Battle of Surigao Strait was, to date, the final line battle in naval history. Yamashiro was the last battleship to engage another in combat and one of very few to have been sunk by another battleship during World War II. This was also the last battle in which one force (the Americans, in this case) was able to cross the T of its opponent, enabling the U.S. ships to bring all their firepower to bear on the Japanese ships.

I took this statement from the very first posts in this thread. I was quite surprised about the heated argument about Surigao forumers claiming their city is world-class. I know I have no right to say anything about the pros and the cons on the topic. But the above-mentioned quote sounds erratic. I don't think the culture of a people (race) is destroyed because of typhoons. Unless, I think, typhoons kill everyone in a place then that could mean end for everything, including the people's culture. Just my two cents on the whole thing.

d pa. but i agree this mall is not that huge, as it was stated that it has two mini theater. so i guess this mall is not the usual mall na dako gyud kaayo. and as i see the mall location, the lot is not that big enough, but i guess it is already good considering the population of the city.
as of today, the SRBC restaurant which is part of the mall is already under contruction.
filino October 25th, 2007, 07:39 AM Diocese of Surigao hosts 13th MSPC
By glenrose on Oct 24, 2007 in News
Surigao City (October 24) — With the theme “Restoring Moral Values through BECs,” the Diocese of Surigao hosts the 13th Mindanao Sulu Pastoral Conference (MSPC) which started Monday, October 22, 2007 and will end on Friday, October 26, 2007.
A total of 175 religious delegates converged to discuss timely issues concerning Church and Society which aimed to assess the moral situation within the Church and the country in media, governance, family and schools, to evaluate the moral education and formation program in the respective archdiocese, to identify factors affecting the deterioration, of not the decay of morality in the Church and in society and to come up with concrete initiatives and plan of action for the restoration and rediscovery of moral values within the church and the society.
A holy mass at the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral officiated by Most Reverend Antonieto Cabahog was conducted as an opening salvo.
Meantime, a lively entertainment of contemporary songs and dances welcomed the delegates and guests in a religious gathering at Saint Paul University gymnasium here.
Paulinian grade school pupils, high school and college students showcased the distinctively warm attitude and artistic culture of the Surigaonons through a cultural presentation which laid the bushed bodies of the delegates who traveled from different places in Mindanao convening for five days to discuss issues aimed at uplifting the present conditions of the Church and society particularly in Mindanao region.
“We had rigid practices because we want to show the unique gift of culture Surigaonon has which is reflected in our dance movements,” Kim Jonas Orquillas, a college dancer shared.
Moreover, preceded the cultural show was a message from Surigao City Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra who welcomed the participants. Mayor Casurra emphasized that he was grateful to the religious organizers of choosing Surigao City as the venue for this years’ MSPC. DA, CBCP to launch agri sites in Mindanao
SECRETARY Arthur Yap of the Department of Agriculture (DA) will join officials of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in Surigao del Norte today for the launching of a widescale program that aims to raise the productivity and profitability of Mindanao’s farms through sustainable agriculture.
Yap will also speak before the Mindanao-Sulu Pastoral Council, where he will explain agriculture’s pivotal role in improving the lives of the people in the Southern Philippines and how government and the church can work together towards realizing this goal.
All Mindanao bishops are expected to grace the affair, which is held every two years to discuss pressing issues concerning the welfare of Mindanaoans.
Undersecretary for Special Concerns Berna Romulo-Puyat will kick off the program in promoting sustainable agricultural sites in Mindanao. Yap is set to distribute certificates for shredders, decorticating machines and shallow tube wells to Bishop Antonieto Cabajog, Diocese of Surigao del Norte and farmer- beneficiaries from the province of Surigao del Norte.
Expected to attend this landmark event are Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, D.D., chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice & Peace (ECSA-JP)/Caritas Filipinas/CBCP-NASSA; Sr. Roseanne Malillin, executive secretary of Caritas Filipinas/CBCP-NASSA; Director Silvino Tejada of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) and Usec Puyat.
During his visit to the province, the DA chief will also hold a dialogue with Mindanao farmers to personally listen to their problems and concerns.
Last week, Yap also launched an unprecedented Sustainable Agriculture Program (SAP) in Bohol, which is a joint initiative between the Arroyo government and the CBCP, to boost farm productivity in the province while ensuring the sustainability of its farm resources.
Yap also turned over equipment such as shredders, decorticating machines with geo-textile weavers and certificates for shallow tube wells to farmers’ cooperatives and Catholic bishops in Tagbilaran and Talibon in Bohol,
Earlier, the DA inked an agreement with another leading Catholic organization -- Caritas Filipinas -- on the establishment of a facility in Butuan City that will help realize their common goal of increasing the productivity and profitability of Mindanao’s farms while ensuring the sustainability of the island’s agricultural resources.
Under the agreement, the DA and the CBCP-NASSA-ECSA-JP, through Caritas Filipinas, will jointly set up a Sustainable Agriculture Resource Center (SARC) for the Caraga Region that will identify project sites where organic farm practices can be employed to help boost productivity and raise rural incomes in Mindanao.
Under the MOA signed during the launching of the DA-Caritas Joint Program on Sustainable Agriculture last August, the SARC will serve as “co-partner and as a show-window for the farmers and will provide whatever assistance to prospective cooperators” under the project.

Farirah October 25th, 2007, 09:59 AM Hello. Glad to read an immediate post. Yes, I have read everything up to page 8 of the thread. I am happier the rift had already ended. I just find the posts really offensive, and I am proud of how you guys, Surigaonons (?), defended your claims. I read about Surigao's being voted one of the most livable cities in Asia. And like my dearly loved Legazpi, Surigao is one of the ten most competitive small cities in the country. Keep it all up. Oh, by the way, I have never posted anything in a Mindanao thread. I am glad I am welcome here.
We need more like you @gurugeri. Keep on posting not only in this thread, but other Mindanaon threads as well. :okay:

I'm so glad about this. The abundant natural resources and the increase of tourist visitors and investors in Surigao City and the province as a whole nowadays have pushed the local government and the people together to work harder towards greater urbanity. Keep it up Surigaonons! Be indeed proud of your achievements. ^^

filino October 30th, 2007, 01:22 AM RSCWC scores Surigao's child welfare projects, facilities By Harvey Entendez Diaz
October 26, 2006
Members of the technical working group of the Regional Sub-committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) visited the City of Surigao Tuesday for the evaluation of the city's programs and facilities for children in relation to the 2007 Search for the Most Child-friendly City in Caraga Region.
RSCWC members inspects the documents related to Surigao City's programs for the welfare of children.
The evaluation, slated on October 23-24, covered the city's child welfare projects and activities, as well as the facilities for the welfare of children, such as the streetchildren center in Barangay Anomar and the day-care centers in Barangays San Juan, Capalayan and Rizal (Balibayon).
The RSCWC conducts this regional search annually and evaluates local government units (LGUs) to ensure that programs, projects and activities for the welfare of children are laid out and executed, and that LGUs come up with a comprehensive intervention that effectively addresses issues and concerns of children in their locality.
Surigao City is a constant awardee of the RSCWC search and was last year's most child-friendly city in the region.
Relatedly, the National Council for the Welfare of Children (NCWC) will conduct the search for the most child-friendly LGUs in the country in 2008. LGUs which garner the regional award for two consecutive years will be automatically nominated in the national search.
