if i am right, i think 4 ferries yata in that port alone. that port kc is located at Brgy. Lipata, Surigao City. the other one is located at the heart of the City which is at Bilang-Bilang, Surigao City. ang mga vessels didto came from manila, cebu and other island barangays and municipalities from Leyte, Dinagat & siargao.

Biotech program for ‘malunggay’ launched
By Melody M. Aguiba, Manila Bulletin
November 4, 2007

The government has introduced a biotechnology program for the miracle plant malunggay in Surigao City to commercialize the indigenous plant that can be processed into a pharmaceutical and industrial product.

Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Arthur C. Yap led the distribution of vegetable seeds and seedlings a the St. Paul University gymnasium in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, signaling DA’s support for the commercialization program.

DA also co-launched the Social Action Network Joint Program on Sustainable Agriculture together with the seedling distribution in an ultimate aim to promote organic farming or reduced use of environmentally-harmful chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

The malunggay propagation program is expected to take off on a commercial scale a DA has singled out malunggay as the main crop under its program "One House, One Vegetable (OHOV).

OHOV, evidently adapted from the Department of Trade and Industry’s One Town One Product (OTOP) program, is part of a poverty alleviation and malnutrition elimination effort specially among women and children in poor Caraga regions.

Malunggay can be used to fortify noodles, soup or bread with vitamins and minerals of the nutritious vegetables. Malunggay’s seeds can produce all-purpose-oil and can be used by industries for products like soap, shampoo, lotion and other personal health care products.

With adequate research, it can also be an alternative source of biofuel. As feed, the leaf and cake of the malunggay fruit or sepal can also be used as animal feed for goat, pig, cattle, chicken and ducks.

Malunggay production also has an intended market even as Monde Nissin or even San Miguel Corp. may become interested in processing the crop.

DA hopes the OHOV will encourage households to plant vegetables and put up their own backyard livestock enterprises (with goats and pigs) that will make available for them a ready food source while any excess may be channeled to the market.

DA has distributed a total of 53,500 malunggay seedlings to a total of 18,680 families or three seedlings per family at Caraga Region (Surigao and Agusan provinces and Butuan).

Identified as one of the poorest regions that have high malnutrition rate in the entire Philippines, Butuan will be benefited by programs to make malunggay a processed good as this can be used as ingredient for treating deficiency in iron and other nutrients like calcium.

The crop also easily and naturally grows everywhere in the country.

"A vegetable tree often ignored by the people, it will help boost government effort to fight hunger and poverty, as well as chronic malnutrition suffered by millions of millions of Filipinos, especially women and children," DA said.

Yes, there's a governor's "mansion" at the back of the Capitol but it's actually a just guest house. It's not The Governor's Mansion.

The original Governor's Mansion dates back to the Spanish era. It used to house a replica of the US Liberty Bell (now in a museum).

Hanjin building bigger shipyard in Surigao

AFTER building a $720-million shipyard in Subic, Korean industrial giant Hanjin Heavy Industries Co. is building an even bigger shipyard in Mindanao, Malacañang claimed Saturday.

Presidential Management Staff (PMS) head Cerge Remonde said Hanjin is laying the groundwork for an "even bigger" shipyard at Misamis Oriental, near Cagayan de Oro City.
"Na-amaze tayo (We were already amazed when they were) building one of the biggest shipyards in the world sa Subic. They are building an even bigger shipyard at Misamis Oriental near Cagayan de Oro, bigger than what we have in Subic," Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio, but did not give further details.

He would only say that this shows the people can achieve more if they are united instead of dabbling in politics.

"Sana (I wish) we can be more united if we can set aside partisan politics until 2010," he said. (JMR/Sunnex)

PGMA visits calamity-stricken Surigao, Iligan
By Mike U. Crismundo, Philippine News Agency
November 22, 2007
Edited by Surigaocity.gov.ph, original transcript can be found here.

SURIGAO CITY--Right after returning home from the 13th Association of South East Asian Nations Summit in Singapore, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo immediately proceeded to calamity-stricken areas in Northern and Northeastern Mindanao regions Thursday to personally assess the situation of the victims, particularly in Iligan City and this nickel city which was severely hit by landslides and floods where seven persons were killed.

Some 600 families were reportedly displaced in Iligan City, while more than 500 families were adversely affected by the heavy rains and flood waters in Lugait town, Misamis Oriental, and 890 families were hit by landslides in Surigao del Norte and Surigao City.

At least nine houses were totally destroyed in Regions 10 and 13 while some 20 others were reported damaged in Iligan City.

The President visited Iligan City and met local government unit officials and members of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) in Northern Mindanao.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz informed the President about the displaced residents that being badly affected by floods brought about by heavy rains on November 18 and 19. The flood victims were sheltered at 13 evacuation centers in that city.

Cruz said the city is already under a state of calamity since 10 barangays and other areas were severely hit by floods.

President Arroyo ordered concerned government agencies for the immediate release of foods and cash assistance to the flood victims before flying to Surigao City in Surigao del Norte for another inspection and personal look of the welfare of the landslide and flood victims.

The President was accompanied by Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon, Jr.

She was briefed during a luncheon meeting about the calamity and peace and order situation of Surigao City at the City Function Room here by members of the RDCC in Northeastern Mindanao, led by Caraga Regional Police Director Chief Supt. Jaime Milla, Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra and Surigao del Norte Gov. Robert Ace Barbers.

Milla also reported the P40 million initial damaged on infrastructure, P15.6 million on agricultural crops and P778,923.50 million on livestock in Surigao City and in the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat.

President Arroyo urged local officials and other concerned government agencies to speed up their relief operations, while she condoled with the families of the victims of typhoon “Lando.”

Two women, one of them three months pregnant, were buried alive when mudslides struck their respective houses in Cagniyog, Surigao City, while five miners were buried by mud and two others were rescued when a landslide struck the makeshift house of the small-scale miners in Magsaysay, Placer town, Surigao del Norte.

“I’m deeply sorry for what had happened to the victims,” the President said.

The President, along with the NDCC and RDCC officials handed P10,000 each to the immediate kins of the seven victims.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development also handed separate checks worth P3,000 each victim as financial assistance.

President Arroyo also visited Surigao del Sur, particularly Tandag City, to personally inspect various multi-billion infrastructure projects before flying back to Manila.

PGMA sees renewed spirit during Surigao visit
By Fryan E. Abkilan, PIA Surigao del Norte
November 23, 2007
Edited by Surigaocity.gov.ph, original transcript can be found here.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo saw renewed spirit as she visited Surigao City yesterday and lauded effort of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) of Caraga in delivering assistance and relief operations to the seven landslide victims.

Round-table discussion. President Arroyo convenes the member-agencies of the RDCC in Caraga regions. They lay out plans and measures for the prevention of the damage caused by disasters such as landslides in Surigao City and Surigao del Norte province.

After her arrival from Iligan City, the President convened a meeting with members and officials of RDCC and discussed relief programs and efforts in the disaster-stricken areas. President Arroyo was overwhelmed with the quick response and the unified efforts from the member agencies of RDCC.

“The damage to lives and property would have been worse were it not for the timely action of the government. Congratulations to the N[ational]DCC, the LGUs of affected areas and all related agencies for their quick response,” the President said in her opening statement. She said further that NDCC will continue to coordinate with other line agencies for more assistance to the victims.

Pres. Arroyo also urged the officials to quickly adopt necessary measures to lessen up the damage. “Be a climate taker rather than a climate maker. We cannot prevent disaster but certainly we can undertake adaptation measures to prevent the loss of lives and reduce damage to properties,” she said.

LGU's aid. President Arroyo lauds the quick assistance given by the local government units of the affected areas, and urged the officials to adopt measures in their localities.

Meantime, Pres. Arroyo provided an additional assistance amounting to P700,000 to augment the assistance earlier given by the local government units, RDCC and the Department of Social welfare and Development (DSWD) to the families of the landslide victims. The President personally handed the financial assistance to the family beneficiaries.

“Aside from the P27,000 combined assistance from RDCC-DSWD and the local government [units] an additional amount of P100,000 from the President’s Social Fund will be added and so that it will become P127,000 each for the victims,” said the President.

i hope so, i guess tha's the ultimate goal. having a refinery for such ore is on the plan as what i have heard (unconfirmed) so that those ores/raw materials will no longer be exported. if it will be materialized this will be a great help for the host mining community and for our country as a whole.

dati wala, iwan ko lang ngayon pag matapos na ang renovation and expansion nito. kung it rate ko kasi parang 30% pa ang tapos dito so malaki pa ang kulang actually. yong sa pix na pinakita ko, its just a portion of the second floor coz the whole second level is not yet finished.

dont know the exact area but part of the deed of donation was that this area if no longer be utilized as sports center this should be returned to the real owner. kaya walang magawa ang local government. balak kasi sana nila ibenta ang area to prospect buyer for commercial use but then again hindi pwede.
